One of the nicest, All Inclusive resorts I've seen!

This place will take your breath away from the moment you get there. The facilities are beautiful! The restaurants are pristine and the food is great. My wife and I were here at another Melia property and we were pleasantly surprised how hice this place was. We'll be back soon!

Beach is major disappointment (seaweed problem) and hotel is average for the price

Let me start by saying I rarely leave reviews, and when I do it’s usually for an outstanding product or service OR when I am really disappointed. The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is a luxury resort which I was hoping will be the first vacation that my children will swim in the clear, turquoise waters of Caribbean Sea and enjoy the beautiful beaches my wife and I came to love on the islands. We have visited before several islands in the Caribbean and wanted to try somewhere we haven’t been before. We picked Dominican Republic as our next destination and I have booked The Reserve for our anniversary. Let me first highlight some good things about The Reserve, we have booked the one Bedroom Family Concierge suite and really enjoy our accommodation and the privacy we get, as well as Alexander (our Concierge) that provides extremely good service from sending us daily schedule of activities, books restaurants and was there too answer all of our questions. He even helped us to get a cab to another beach and arrange the details with the taxi driver who did not speak any English. The food at The Reserve is great as well, we have not been disappointed so far with any of the restraints or buffet food. The pools are great as well and provide plenty of daily activities for my family. Here are our major disappointment, the beach is fully covered in seaweed. It is so bad that there is no way to get to the water without stepping into stacks of seaweed. The water is even worst, it’s fully covered in seaweed. My 8 year old daughter did not even go into the ocean to swim. And believe me we did not come from west coast to swim in the pool. Apparently the Bavaro beach area has this problem for over two years. I can’t believe that I didn’t find any reviews about this major problem with this hotel. I heard from others we met at some excursions that other hotels that have the same problem clean the beach 3 times a day. This is not the case with Paradisus, the beach is fully covered in seaweed. OK, enough with the beach… let me tell you about the service. The service at The Reserve is no where near luxury. During breakfast we set for 20 minutes waiting for someone to come to us and give us coffee. There was literally no servants at the restaurant to help guests. On another occasion, we sat down at the Oxygen Grill a restaurant by the pool during a short rain. I waited for good 30 min and no servant came to help us. Since it started raining the restaurant was full and there were only two servants. I feel like this hotel is not managed well and does not have the touches a truly luxury hotel should have. I’ll mention one more: the cleaning staff did not always provided enough towels or stacked up the in room food bar with basic things like sugar, coffee cups, etc…. I mean how can they leave two clean towels in the room for at least 3 people (we had 4)… I’ll stop here, the hotel is average and is not being managed as a luxury hotel. Your money will be better spent somewhere else.

Good for relaxing, quiet family trip

We stayed in July 2018 for a week as a family of 4 with a tween, early teen and 2 adults from the USA.. We expected a quiet relaxing time and it was perfect. WE did meet some younger girls (in their 20s) and this was not the resort for young singles looking for excitement! Here are things I would have liked to have known: - we were able to get a transfer for $35 each way from Renny Travel. I read others where people paid much more. The hotel did not help with the transfer - we stayed in a swim out room. Loved it and all the first floor rooms seemed very, very private (with the garden or the swim out). We loved the privacy they offered with the landscaping. We recommend a swim out but the water is 5 feet deep. So if you have little kids note how deep it is. We brought our own blow up rafts and left it there as a side note. With a swim out you have your own cabana and 2 chairs to lay out in. All very nice and appreciated as I found that chairs right by the pool were hard to get if you didn't have a room. With older kids it was fine but with younger kids I would have struggled to have a seat where they were otherwise. - Room - we had a one bedroom suite. The pull out sofa is about the width of a king bed but it is shorter than a typical bed. Great for kids but adults but tall teens might have a hard time on it. My husband is 6'1" and the pull out was too short for him. However, it was not terrible pull out and worked fine for one of our kids. The first night, the TV did not work. A call and they immediately fixed it so they respond well but things like that are annoying in general on vacation. - Service - the room was clean but the snacks and drinks were not always refilled. Often I had to call to get them refilled. Having a person dedicated to you was ok - not what others are raving about. I didn't like that you had to have your phone with you as I wanted to be tech free. She made reservations for dinner and sent us the daily activities and took care of any issues with the room (more pillows, etc.) but nothing outstanding that others have mentioned. Maybe we should have asked more questions but she really didn't offer up or help with information other than reservations and sending us the daily activities. When we did ask about some of the activities, she wasn't even sure about them but she did always look for answers and respond relatively quickly -especially when we asked for tings like the pull out to be made up, etc. Any issues with the room she was very fast to get someone to fix it. - Food - just ok. We ate at a different place each night (we took advantage of the Paradius too). Limited kids menus everywhere. If our kids did not like dinner, we simply hit the buffet next at the Paradisus as it was huge. We also did that for ice cream at night. The hibatchi places had the best food in our opinion. Being all inclusive, it is nice if you don't like something just to get something else or a snack later. The alcohol drinks were strong and used name brand if you asked (maybe even if you didn't) What we were never told is that the Paradisus has special buffet nights on the beach or in the ball room that you can go to. One night it was a pirate themed dinner on the beach and one night they had a Dominican night in the ballroom. By the time we figured it out, we had already eaten but we wish we had been told. Many people walked up and just asked to be seated without reservations and they did take them. With so many events/weddings we didn't realize they were open until we saw those people ask if they could be seated. Ask your concierge if you are interested in these - ours never told us and being at the Reserve, we could have taken advantage of any of the Paradisus events. Note - we always drank bottled water and were fine until my husband on the last day had a hamburger medium and he did get sick. He should have had it medium well. BRING nicer clothes for dinner - I don't know how I missed this but our teens only brought one nicer outfit and they could have used more. Not formal but collared shirt for boys and simply dress or jumper for girls. - Beach - was nice but when we were there, seaweed was there. So we spent most of our time at the pool. The beach is only a short walk or there are always shuttles so don't worry about getting to the beach - that was very easy. The public beach (we found on an excursion) did not have any seaweed. If we had known that, we would have gone there for a day. Be sure to ask your assigned person - I think we didn't know to ask things. - entertainment - we went each night to Paradius and watched the 9 pm show. It varied. Sometimes we left after 15 minutes and other times we stayed longer. The Reserve really only had live lounge music or karaoke at night and my kids thought it was boring. The Paradisus has a different show/activity each night and they always thought it was worth trying. Their favorite was probably the circus. Dominican night means there will be vendors selling - they are a little pushy but it was interesting to see their stuff. - Tween/Teen Activities - The climbing wall and the "bungee jump" for teens and tweens were both broken while we were there which was disappointing. My kids tried the DJ class and it was not worth going to. They also tried tennis - it was ok. They were the only kids at both activities so on the plus side, they got a lot of attention.. -Excursion - we did book on through the hotel. A buggy ride, you can see reviews on that. However, note that they will negotiate prices so ask for a lower price. - WIFI was excellent. No issues whatsoever. Overall, we had a great time - very relaxing.

First impressions
LengTan, Paris, France
Wed Jul 18 12:43:38 EDT 2018
We arrived 16 July and will be here for the next 2 weeks. Here are some first impressions and tips i wanted to share with fellow travelers interested in this resort: Pre-trip We didn’t receive any confirmation or welcome communication since we booked the vacation a couple of months ago. A week before we flew off, I took the initiative to contact the hotel to ask for airport transfer information. - I think a simple welcome note would have been appreciated, and letting the guests know of transfer options and if guests needed help in arranging. - we were told that the hotel does not provide shuttle, and to contact a company they work with, Otium. Hotel quoted me 60 usd per way and 120 usd for both. I contacted otium but couldn’t find their site in English initially. Finally emailed them and as we were then less than 48 hours from departure, the rate is 88usd per way. From what I read on TripAdvisor, taxis should be fairly easy to get at the Punta Cana airport. And truth be told, I was put off by otium’s reply which was limit rude. - reached Punta Cana airport, there is a counter stating “melia’. We asked for a transfer to The Reserve and the friendly guy quoted us... 30usd. I still don’t understand how the hotel does not provide shuttle but have an official counter at the airport? Resort - the property is beautiful and the public areas are very well maintained. - most staff are very friendly and they try to ensure you have a good time. Do note that this is a Spanish club so not everyone speaks enough English. We knew it from the start so was ok. But the kids zone was more tricky as our daughter of 3 years old couldn’t make herself understood and the instructions we left behind weren’t clear enough for the staff. We will see tomorrow. The kids zone staff are really friendly though. Am sure a little more fine tuning and adjustment would be ok for the rest of the stay. - we have a one master bedroom with family concierge. Room is as per what we saw on their website, no surprise. We had a leaking sink from day one but it was resolved immediately. Our room door was also faulty but again they came immediately when we signaled the problem. Very reactive. - family concierge: I will write a review at the end of the trip. So far, he isn’t what we read from other travelers about their wonderful family concierges and how their holidays wouldn’t be the same if not for the family concierge. We have been here for only 2-3 days so we shall see how the trip unfolds. - swimming pools are lovely and they cater to the whole family. There are 2 poolside cabanas (best view, shaded) that are reserved HOURS before the guests show up. We know it because we are jet lagged and we are at the pool at 7am when there is absolutely no one. We are the only guests around yet the cabanas are reserved with towels and books. Yesterday till we left at 11+am, the 2 families did not show up. Today one showed up around 10+. I don’t know what to make of this.... either the nicest family concierge around is helping with the cabana reservations and if so, maybe other family concierges can also take turns to ensure everyone has a good time? If not, maybe the hotel management needs to do something. Not easy, but it’s annoying when you are there by the pool and would make good use of the cabanas the few hours you are there, instead of seeing it reserved with towels and no one. - food: we tried only the restaurants at The Reserve so far and they are all good. The buffet restaurant is calm and the portions are really correct. Not the huge trays of buffets one often sees but elegant portions with good quality food while minimizing wastage. We appreciate that a lot. No section for kids though at the buffet section so we had to be more creative in avoiding the salty food for our daughter. - activities: the aqua gym and stretching trainer, Alejandro, is very, very friendly. He really wants you to relax, laugh and have a good time. He makes it a point to remember all the names too, and when I bumped into him yesterday, he told me what activities would be coming up, and where. He asked where I was going, and made sure i went the right direction. I was more expecting this from our family concierge. 😂 My husband tried the windsurfing yesterday and was very disappointed. Their surf board is very old so lacks some of the simple improvements. Difficult to windsurf per se, given the sea weeds and the many boats criss crossing. They are off to a professional kitesurfing school today so I shall update later.

What a great experience we had from well appointed, modern, specious, beautifully designed rooms and hotel surroundings to very well kept beach area. We received an exceptional service from our concierge Juan Castillo. From the day one he made sure our vacation was as worry free as possible. He not only took care of restaurant reservations, as consierges in other hotels offer, but Juan called us to make sure we have everything, reminded about activities, answered our questions, immediately took care of our requests. Also thank you ,Juan, for our anniversary surprises, your little touches made every day special. In general the resort is very well maintained, clean, modern and tastefully decorated. The only area that needs an improvement is service at the restaurants. People were sitting for a long time waiting for a server or food. Although Vento restaurant was an exception. We have experienced both: lots of fun and relaxing time! Thank you all!
