This hotel is beautiful. Food is good and the service is excellent. The beach is a walk but that didn't bother us. The kids area is very good.!! I recommend this hotel traveling alone with your significant other or with family.

We had never been to an all inclusive resort and came to take part in a family event. Staff were very attentive and food choice huge. Pools and beach well maintained. A special shout out toJessica Reyes who was assigned to our family as concierge. She was attentive and solved any issues, made reservations in restaurants and took good care of us!

Nice but needs some TLC

We stayed here for 5 days back in July. The Reserve is about a 10-15 min walk or a 3 min golf cart ride to the main resort. We had a one-bedroom suite on the 2nd floor that was plenty of space for my family of 4 (me, my wife, an infant and toddler) but it has definitely seen better days. The AC worked but because it was so humid, everything felt moist and wet even though it was cold. 1 of the tvs didn't work and the mini fridge was barely cold. Like other reviews, hand towels were scarce. This is sort of a weird problem to have....... The toys in the kidzone could use some updating and one of the kid pool slides was not working. Beaches are all at the main resort and were littered with seaweed so we stayed in the pools and it was nice there was a reserve pool at the main resort. No issue getting top-shelf booze (JW black scotch) at any bar in the reserve or the main. Food was nothing to write home about. Even the buffets weren't that great. Mizu hibachi was okay, vento was okay, rare was okay, everything was just okay which was a bit disappointing for how much we paid. Service all around was decent. If I ever come back to PC, it definitely won't be in the summer and will probably try somewhere else.

Ok, but a lot of room for improvement.

We have just returned from The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real. We were there for our 1st wedding anniversary and stayed for 10 days. I'd like to start with some info on the way the resort actually works because it was confusing when we booked, confusing when we arrived and we only made sense of it after staying there for a couple of days. The Paradisus Palma Real is a large resort property made up of a large main hotel and another smaller hotel which is the reserve (where we stayed). The main hotel is much busier than the reserve and feels more lively and is right on the beach. The reserve feels much more personal, less guests and to be honest less going on. If you stay in the reserve bear in mind you will not be on the beach, you will need to take a golf cart to the main hotel which is where the beach is. This is where it gets more confusing because if you book a certain type of room (beachfront suite at the reserve) you will actually be staying in the main hotel not the reserve. If you book any other room at the reserve which is not a beachfront suite you will be staying in the reserve hotel. Got it? There is also a Royal Service section but we never figured out where that was! I think the hotel booking could do much better at making it clearer to guests the scale of the property because we would never usually boook a holiday that meant we were more than a walk past a pool to get to a beach but on this occassion that was not the case but not that it mattered in the end, more on the beach later. Finally if you are in the reserve you have the run of the resort, you can use the main hotel facilities etc but I'm not sure if main hotel guests can use the reserve facilities. Check in - On arrival we were both given a drink which you come to expect at a 5 star AI which was good. We were one of two groups checking in and as there were 2 desks we did not have to wait. Having paid for the lowest tier Paradisus Suite we were told that we would be upgraded for free to a grand suite. This was very good and I assume because it is the low season they had a lot of vacant rooms but still very kind of them to do so. We were given a small booklet and sent to our suite via golf cart with our luggage. We were not told much about the hotel, where we could eat that evening etc. It definitely felt like it was "here are your keys off you go". Grand Suite - On entering our room we were impressed with the size. This is probably the biggest room we have ever had on a holiday, it had a dining section, living room, bathroom, shower room, bedroom and a large balcony section with Jacuzzi. Very good. What is not so good is that there is a lot of dated mahogany wood in the room that has clearly been revarnished several times because there are bits of varnish all over the floor throughout the room that due to the colour actually looks like dry blood on the cream floor tiles. The furniture and surfaces are all quite tired and could do with updating. The bed was the exception though, that was fine and comfortable enough. We did have a problem with the A/C ceiling vent leaking which left a big slippery puddle on the tiled floor. They came and fixed it although it broke again and one night while walking to the toilet I didn't realise the puddle was there I slipped on it and had a fall hurting my knee. We also had a problem with the toilet running constantly which they came and fixed. The balcony doors were broken in one place and we did not realise this until about 5 days in, we had wondered how we were waking up with mosquito bites when all the doors were closed. We reported it, they took a look and said someone would come back, they never did. After this and the A/C we just decided to put a towel on the floor to soak up the dripping A/C which you think the maid would report but she didn't. I don't come on holiday to run a room maintenance program and just decided to put up with the problems. Pools - The pools at the reserve are good, they are large and there are probably 5 of them so no issues there. There were also plenty of sun beds, high quality metal ones not the cheap plastic ones some resorts use. This is definitely one of the good things about the resort, if you like sun bathing and going in the pool all day this place is great for it. If the large pool isn't big enough for you there is an absolutely huge pool at the main hotel you can use, again plenty of sun beds. This was probably the first holiday we have ever been on where you could get up late, go to breakfast and have your pick of several good spots at the sun beds. Probably due to the amount of them and the fact it was the low season, but very good still. Bars & Restaurants - There are 2 main bars in the Reserve, one at Gabi Club and one at the hydro grill. Both have everything you want but it must be mentioned that getting hot drinks like tea or coffee is not as quick or easy as it was at breakfast when they have people carrying jugs of good filter coffee. If you are staying in the reserve you have breakfast at Gabi Club, after 10 days the breakfast became a bit boring but it was OK. The thing I found a bit disappointing is that while you could have eggs freshly made, things like pancakes or waffles were stacked up and just left in the buffet meaning that they were quite dry and hard, really it would have been good for them to provide stations for that sort of things to be made fresh as well. Similar story for lunch really, station to cook fish while you wait available but everything else is buffet and not always ideal. However for lunch the hydro grill serves dishes made to order and while the menu wasn't that big we had lunch there most days because having the same things freshly cooked beats something different each day from the buffet for us. The first night we arrived we went to eat dinner at Gabi Club to be told we needed a reservation, we weren't told this on check in so had to ask where we could eat that night and were told the main hotel. This is the sort of thing that would have been nice to know at check in rather than when we went down for dinner. There are a lot of restaurants spread across the main hotel and the reserve that all require reservations that provide cooked to order food. On our 2nd day we were assigned a concierge Carlos, once we had met with him we bascially said we don't care which order we eat at the restaurants in but we want to book them all and avoid the buffet for dinner. He was good with this and basically sent us a text message each day telling us where we would be eating each night. However the restaurants themselves that do require reservations were all excellent. We have been to a lot of hotels over the years and I can easily say that this hotel has the best restaurants thay we have ever had at an AI. The food in all of them was above what we expected and the Passion restaurant that attracts an extra charge is well worth it, if you go there you will see where the extra money goes both with the food and the service provided. Our only complaint is that in the Rare restaurant, for desert my wife was served a chocolate brownie that had nuts in. She is allergic to nuts. At other restaurants we had been to at the resort they would ask us before we were seated if either of us had allergies but at this one they didn't so we assumed the menu was no nuts but luckily for her I also had the brownie and detected the nuts before she ate hers. Very dangerous to be honest and could have gone very badly. Ironically on the menu they had incdicators for things that contained gluten or were spicy but not but allergy warnings. Other than that though the food and the staff in the restaurants that required reservations were excellent, we really wouldn't expect much more. Beach - Hands down the disappointment of the holiday. When you travel long haul from the UK to the Caribbean a good beach is a must have. The beach had a lot of seaweed and yes they are trying their best to clear it but it is just not good. The water as well was not the turquoise colour shown in pictures it was murky near to the beach and dark in colour. I appreciate there is a natural phenomenon happening at the moment in a lot of the carribean but guests deserve to know what they are going to and if you have any hope of coming here to a good beach you will be disappointed. We will not be returning to the DR anytime soon for this reason alone. Do not fall for the catfishing images from people and the hotel that are on instagram, they are being taken at very specific places and times of the day and do not represent the beach in it's reality at all. Evening Entertainment - This was OK, better than some places we have been to but we felt it wasn't very well publicised. It would be nice to have boards up in the lobbies actually saying what is happening at what times. There is a Casino which is good if you like to Gamble. The reserve is pretty dead in the evening, expect to spend most of your after dinner time at the main hotel. With regards to entertainment it would have been good for them to have pool tables of which there were none. Staff - The vast majority of the staff here are all really good, friendly and happy to serve. Their english could be better but so could my Spanish. Wilken, Teobaldo and Santo at the hydrogrill, Santo at Gabi Club and another guy who was in the restaurants most evenings but we didn't get his name were all fantastic. There are plenty of other staff there that were also fantastic but we just didn't get their names. Finally like the title of my review this place was ok but things could be improved. I think the biggest problem this hotel has is the beach. The only way I can see them fixing it is to erect some sort of structures in the water that prevent the seaweed getting to the shore be it nets or some sort of rock bed that would mean less seaweed and clearer water. Also one other thing to note is that on the resort property they are curreny building a new hotel called circle. Don't let this put you off because you can only see the building work from one part of the reserve where the gym is, it will not badly effect your holiday at all. However there are a few people walking round the hotel trying to persaude you to go to the new hotel to listen to a presentation about it in return for vouchers for stays there. We were not interested in this and the first person that we told this to came up to us later in the holiday with the same pitch despite us telling him we had already heard what he said the first time. There were also 2 other people we had to explain this to. I know they are trying to drum up business but asking us once is more than enough, any more than that is annoying. You will have to listen to it again if you want your "$1000" of resort vouchers which by the way are pretty useless as they all have big minimum spend requirements on them and equate to a 10% discount. We did use the Spa as well but their own discount on the day was worth more than using the vouchers and we could not have their discount and use the vouchers. There are a few cats on the property and as animal lovers we had no problem with this. It would be great to see the hotel taking care of them and putting collars on them and making sure they are properly looked after. One particular cat came to visit us most days and was super friendly, we were very sad to leave him behind. If you run into him on your holiday please be kind to him, he will be your faithful pet away from home :)

Excellent service

I stayed with my wife and our 1 year old in a family concierge one bedroom suite. The highlight of our stay was the excellent service provided by all the staff of the hotel. Our concierge Alexander was very helpful in booking our dinners, helping us with any other requests during our stay and constantly checked on us to see if we needed something else. The hotel food was good with some restaurants needing some improvement. Do not miss Brisas if you stay at the Reserve! We tried to repeat but it was closed some days given that during low season some restaurants close some nights. The room was very confortable, with all the amenities expected. Could get some upgrades (very old TV set, not so good Wifi). If you are looking for a relaxed family vacation we would recommend staying at The Reserve. The main resort Palma Real was also good but the Reserve grounds offer better amenities and better service.
