Great Time

This was our first getaway since getting married and having kids so it was hopefully going to be something special. The staff was able to make that a reality. Alex (our concierge) was on call for us the minute we got there to the time we left with anything we needed or had questions about. The staff was friendly and bent over backwards to make sure we felt at home. We highly recommend this resort and will hopefully be able to make it back.

A forgettable experience

Melia Caribe Tropical A friend recommended this all-inclusive resort, but it has been about 5 years since she visited. The property and services have clearly declined over the years. First the good, the beach is beautiful and a number of water activities are free. Beach chairs are plentiful, so if you prefer the beach to the pool, you won’t have too much trouble finding a good location. There are also lots of motorized sports that require payment, but we found the costs to be very reasonable. The main pool (with swim up bar) is huge, and can accommodate most guests who want to swim. The Italian restaurant (down by the beach) was by far the best of the 5 we tried and provided the best service. Now, the not so good: our room was near the front of the property, near the main building and registration (building 41, I believe). There were peacocks on the lawn that nested nearby. Their call is extremely high pitched and loud and began at about 4:30–5am each morning. It is much like having a rooster outside your room, but louder! The first morning, I awoke about 4:45am to what I thought were babies crying. The peacocks screamed nonstop throughout the day. On several occasions, they were perched on our balcony and were so loud we had difficulty hearing the television. Additionally, though the resort is advertised as all-inclusive, the alcohol seemed very weak and almost tasteless, even the wine. We also noticed that at no point during the week did we observe any guests who looked even the slightest bit inebriated. Given the open bar environment, that is quite rare to see, and I’ve only previously seen it where little alcohol is poured, or the alcohol has been diluted. On one visit to the pool bar, I did see a bartender pour 1/2 glass of beer and add a 1/2 glass of water, but I do not know if he was pouring it for a guest or to drink himself. The dining process is very, very poorly managed. There had been a fire sometime prior to our visit, so several of the restaurants weren’t able to operate in their normal locations. Three were squeezed into what had previously been one location, making for a bit of pandemonium, as guests didn’t understand which was which. Other restaurants were too small to accommodate the number of guests wishing to dine there. The Mexican and Mediterranean, had very, very long wait lists every night. We waited over 90 mins one night and an hour the second night to be seated, though we were originally told it would be only a 15 minute wait each time. However, neither hostess notified guests who were waiting when their seats became available. We were instructed instead to return to the check-in desk after the 15 minute window to get an update on our status on the wait list. We had to do this repeatedly over the hour + wait until our table became available. The area around the check-in stand was very congested, and people waiting became quite nasty when they thought others were “cutting” the line, when we were simply trying to return to the check-in desk as directed to see if our table was ready. To make the problem worse, the hostesses were also responsible for helping clear and reset tables, thus causing a further backup for check-in. They were often away from the check-in desk for 5-10 minutes, allowing the check-in and recheck lines to grow. A pager system would help alleviate some of these problems, though as long as the restaurants are still too small to accommodate all the guests wanting to eat there, and the hostess is not focused on the role of seating guests as efficiently as possible, the extremely long waits will continue. The trolleys around the property that transport guests from villas to the beach could be infrequent and at times, dangerous. On one occasion, the trolley my family and I were riding hit another trolley while in transit, and the driver never asked if everyone on board was okay. He stopped to check the damage to both trolleys but not for injuries. We stopped using the trolley after that and walked the ~ 1/2 mile to the beach or pool. While there are two pools for everyone who is on the ”regular” side of the resort, the second is down near the beach restaurant and is quite small. On several days, the water level was so low (below our waists) guests could not swim. There are also very few pool chairs near the smaller pool. The main pool is beautiful, but if you want a pool chair, you need to get there by 8:30, as the resort does not enforce its “no saving chairs” policy. Do not plan to rely on the WiFi. Ours frequently went out in our room, and the only places we could consistently get a signal was in the main building and in the restaurants by the beach. Lastly, we found housekeeping to be very hit or miss. There were three of us in our room, but we only received 2 towels each day. I left a note asking for 3 towels (and washcloths, which the resort apparently doesn’t provide at all) one day, and that one day, we received three towels. I asked the front desk to have housekeeping provide 3 towels daily, but we never again received three towels and had to either “borrow” one from the housekeeping cart or share the two provided. This resort has so much potential, but we were badly disappointed. It advertises and unforgettable experience, but ours was clearly forgettable. We will definitely return to Punta Cana, but will select a better resort next time.

Over the years, since 2003, I have stayed at this resort probably 15 times . If it were not to my liking would I have spent my time and money doing so? Am going back again 2/19. In a note to management, I do feel some of the changes over the years have not been for the better. I liked the ability to have reservations, but it worked out OK when they were no longer necessary. MaMaison was always a favorite until redecorated. I preferred the formal atmosphere with linen table cloths and red drapes, not the white plastic tables. A completely different ambiance is created. Also, the food wasn't as good, most notably the onion soup. And the evening dress code has been relaxed. I think, too, that the web site is not current to keep people like me informed as to status. Are Le Gourmet, La Pagoda, and La Gondola up and running after reconstruction necessitated by the fire? Changes are made by management to keep up with the modern generation whom you feel are your best clients. However, I object to the dumbing down of social more.

Friends wedding weekend

We stayed here for a friends wedding. It’s cute but quite spread out and the activities weren’t intriguing. The beach was very sea weedy. The pool was big and had more of an antique look. Overall it was a very low key all inclusive resort. Not the best night life. We went off resort For that.
