Excellent Service

We spend 4 fantastic days at the hotel (Dec. 31 - Jan 4). The property has beautiful grounds, great beach club and good food but the best part of our stay was the excellent service provided by Marcos Pinzón, Emir (at the beach club), Iris at Criollo, María at Tagua and César the bellboy. It is one of the few pet friendly hotels at the beach, so they also receive a big clap for that. The best part of our trip was definitely meeting their staff. Congratulations! We will keeping coming back. Perla and Elías

Overpriced and bad service

We had a 3-day stay in the Buenaventura in late Dec 2017, appx. $400 per night with no meals included. We wanted a high-end resort that was within driving distance to Panama City. We were disappointed. While the resort looks nice (grounds and pools maintained), this should not be considered a great resort. We were thoroughly disappointed. I would find other options. The food, service and noise level really was not acceptable for the price. Food was very mediocre at resort-level prices. The resort area is huge. Since we didn’t have a car, going off resort was problematic (40 minutes wait for an Uber, and then 20 minutes to anything else). Service was inept and not helpful. Inflexible on food orders (no way I could get a half-pepperoni, half-cheese pizza. Nope! It was either all cheese or all pepperoni). And some of the restaurants were closed because of problems like plumbing or just lack of food or workers. Inaccurate descriptions from the staff. Directions, instructions, etc. were often wrong. For example, there are cabanas. But you cannot reserve them. So when I asked when I should get to the pool to get a cabana, they said I *must* get there by 6AM to do so… but after I did that, no one really showed up until 10AM, and I still could have got one after noon. Very frustrating. I asked each day for 3 sets of towels in our room (we had 3 people), we never got anything but 2 sets. The walls between rooms was noisy, and our room overlooking the lagoon was filled with music and talking/yelling from the outside bar until well past midnight – no double-paned glass. It was like people were partying in my room. Wifi often out and spotty at best. It didn't work at the pools nearer the beach. This did not make my kids happy. There was no gift shop. This is not usually a problem, but when my daughter’s period started early, we wanted to stock up on pads. But there was nowhere to buy them. The front desk said that there was nothing they could do other than wait until tomorrow to get a cab and go 20 minutes to the nearest store, but they did have some mouthwash if I needed that!... Luckily a stranger overhead our plight and offered up some that tided us over until we left. On the plus side, the pools were actually nice, the grounds well-kept and the beach sand was white (though the beach itself was steep and not really for lounging unless you were right by the tiki bar). And they had lots of insect repellent on hand, which was needed. But overall, I’d say try another resort in the area. It's definitely not 5 star service - I've had highway motels in the US go more out of their way to help. Perhaps just take the extra 1/2 day of travel and go out to Bocas, as I heard the resorts are much better there (and cheaper, too!).

Amazing stay

The hotel has amazing grounds, everything seems well kept. The rooms are really comfortable and well maintained, but the best part is the pool area, you have a sequence of pools that end at the beach so it does not feel crowded since you can usually find a place to rest and relax or do some activities, the resort seems very family friendly and the food was really good. Reception and specially the bell boys seems very busy so maybe they need some help, because the service becomes uneven. For example I was going to talk to the bell captain to give him the key of the car since its vallet service but he saw a taxi arriving so he went to pick up their suitcases and there was nobody else, so we had to wait for him to return. But its not a big deal.

Beautiful, peaceful resort could use a touch of TLC

This was my 4th time in Panama, first as family with two little kids. We stayed here 5 years back when a JW Marriott. Now as Marriott Autograph Collection. The hotel grounds remain beautiful. The resort is tranquil and peaceful. Rooms are large, comfy beds, great storage space including mini fridge, closets, etc, plus great bathroom. Service has improved greatly in the main restaurant that features daily morning breakfast buffet. Service in other restaurants remains lacking. We had a snag with our reservation that sadly hotel was unable to resolve without us needing to call the Marriott 1-800 reservation line in US. Our JW Marriott reservation from 9 months prior featured 2 double beds. When the shift to Autograph Collection occurred, we were shifted to a King bed. 4-5 times prior to arrival we called Marriott to confirm our original beds; we were assured it was noted and not an issue. We did early check-in at our family's home nearby and noticed it indicated King bed. We called hotel and were told these rooms were sold out and we would only get a King bed. They were not very helpful. Frustrated we called Marriott back in the US who after 40 minutes of phone time and great service resolved the issue, minus early check-in. Check-in once at hotel was fine and we got the room we originally requested. The hotel remained cordial, friendly, and nice service generally. Check-in was easy. Our room was pleasant. One of the things noticed from the prior stay and also visit in years prior was deferred maintenance. When we stayed there 5 years back it was immediately following JW Marriott assuming ownership. It was clear they needed to spend time on customer service. We definitely saw improvements even that week and now 5 years later that carry over - for the most part. However, at thetime the resort glistened.Everything felt pristine and new. We since observed lots of deferred maintenance. The pool in the Faro Beach Club area near beach was a gorgeous infinity pool and awesome private cabanas. The cabanas now have some rickety floorboards in areas, missing canopy drapes, cracked / missing tiles on the pool, its no longer an infinity pool, and we even saw the pool cleaner just leave a hose in the pool all day to keep it filled (sad for a luxury resort and also potentially dangerous as tripping hazard). None of these things are discernible to first time guest. However, as repeat customer my wife and I noticed immediately. We also recall previously all bathrooms had personal hand towels for drying; now replaced by only paper. We also noticed some mismatched wall paper in other common bathrooms and a few holes in walls and nicks in walls from paint, removed clothing hooks, and the like. Again, all small things, but as repeat customer it was clear to us. My wife and I both felt as though if investment in this deferred maintenance is not made soon than the hotel will go downhill fast. We are fearful given JW Marriott pulled out that this could be reasoning. Again, its a great resort, but this was very cautionary observation. These issues were not limited to pool areas, but bedrooms as well. Our prior time visiting we also recommended bathrooms install changing tables for babies/families to change diapers. I believe only 1 common bathroom had it, but non elsewhere and none in a men's bathroom. Not helpful with little babies. Potential concern for some families. One day the Faro pool did a foam party in midday. It looked cheap; the kind of thing one would find in Cancun on spring break, not a relaxed, family resort. It also created a real safety hazard. Many pool walkways became VERY slippery afterwards. I saw multiple people fall as a result, including my 3 year old who landed on his head and needed icing. We did love the breakfast buffet and Criollo service. We found other restaurants needed improved service and reservation management. We also felt the menus could do more for vegetarians and also feature more green vegetables (although this is partially typical of Panamanian menus at large). But we did spend most time at Criollo for breakfast and 2 dinners and found service friendly and lovely. The resort is calm and tranquil. Service definitely is friendly and folks looked out for our kids with a smile. We enjoyed ourselves, but for those really wanting lots of action this is NOT the place for you. The resort could do a bit more for a few more activities/schedule for day, especially for families, but some level of its tranquility is also its charm and beauty. The rooms remain lovely, but could use a touch up of paint and so forth. Turn down service and room cleaning may have been the best I ever experienced. They were adorable setting up all of our kids dolls they brought in nice fashion on the couch and bed pillows. They also organized some of our clothing as well. Laundry service was great although morning pickup at 8 am should not result in delivery at nearly 930 pm. Wifi is around the resort. Great in common areas, but poor signal strength in room. TV had great mix of English and Spanish channels. It is definitely good for a peaceful resort stay in nice rooms and especially if you golf. I do fear, however, that deferred maintenance may catch up to the resort quite quickly as well as lack of Marriott's direct training and input to maintain and improve customer service levels. The resort still has untapped potential, but risks also sliding backwards as well. Overall, as 2nd time guests and 3rd time visiting resort with Panamanian relatives who reside nearby, this resort continues to hold a special place in our heart and we will likely return at some point. We do know Panamanians will take special care and attention of our little ones. But for Americans and the like who travel for winter break the resort needs a few steps up to set it apart from its Caribbean competitors.

Horrendous service - unjustifiable stars and prices
,
Tue Jan 02 10:22:47 EST 2018
Calling this a 5 star establishment is a disgrace to 5 star establishments. Their staff completely lacks service mindedness! I asked for a towel by the pool and got the response: "sorry, no towels" so I asked if I could some towels could be brought and the response was "maybe, 10-15 minutes". Having to ask 2 people and wait 30 minutes to get a towel by the pool at noon is not 5 star service. At the beach, do not expect any service to be received either. You can stand by the bar a good 5 minutes to receive a menu. After choosing my orders for the family (then waiting another 5-10 minutes desperately trying to get attention), I was informed that approximately half of the items on the menu were not available. This was at lunchtime. At the breakfast buffet half of the plates were empty and nobody bothered to refill them. I had to wait a good 20 minutes for a burnt and ironically undercooked omelette. Their stars and prices are simply unjustifiable. The place itself is nice, but count on walking 10-15 minutes to the beach.
