Had a nice time

Vacationed at this lovely resort for 2 wks. Drive from Cozumel airport took 20 mins; easy drive with no curves or elevation to worry about. Transportation by taxi van. Two sister resorts side by side. Secrets Aura is adults only. Sabor is much more charming, and staff friendlier. Small property, and well maintained for the most part. Furthest room is max 2 min walk to beach or pools. Washrooms get lots of wear and tear, and it shows. Plenty hot water and pressure except one day. Sewer gas smell too much some days; and depending on wind direction, opening patio door to air out room sometimes made the stink worse. AC efficient. We found beds too firm. Our maid Maria Del Carmen took very good care of us. Breakfast at Portofino, or Secrets Market Cafe. Preferred Market Cafe only because more choices. Their best waiter is Margarito. Their glass topped tables appeared to have been cleaned only once during our stay. Never ate lunch or dinner at Secrets, so can’t comment. Sabor restaurants take turns being closed. We enjoyed Portofino (buffet) for dinner, and it was a joy to have Cristel looking after us. Casseroles with hinged lids used in Portofino and Market Cafe are fabulous. Easy for guests to peek through glass lid, flip up for scooping, and lot less mess (wish all hotels had them). Dinner at El Patio (Mexican) was very good, especially tamarind fish filet, and the tamarind margarita. Contrary to the sign, no worry about long pants dress code for men, nice shorts acceptable. Da Mario (Italian) is located on lower level next to Portofino, also ocean front. My husband liked the pizzas and calzone. I liked the spring farfalle, pasta tossed with carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, and light sprinkle of cheese, (no sauce). All Sabor staff were very polite and we received great service. New year’s eve gala, hesitant to give you reservation if did not purchase US$120+ champagne, or wine. So we instead dined at Portofino. No buffet that evening. Dinner was instead delicious 5 course event; choice of salmon, beef or lobster as your entree. Elegant, ambiance was perfect, and with the beautiful sunset, we could not have wished for anything nicer. No hotel bracelet, nor towel cards. The help yourself to a towel policy works well when guests drop off their used towels. Not when guests leave towels and walk away, and other guests then wonder if chairs are free. Beach chairs and palapas are in great shape. No need to wake at dawn to reserve spot. Several hammocks. Secrets has 2 hammocks strung over the water. Most definitely need water shoes as you will encounter rocks right away, along most of the whole length of beach. There are no soft rock-free areas to swim. Snorkeling was decent along the whole stretch, many fish to see, including 4 ft barracuda. Water waist deep quite a ways out, including by painted “shark head”. Boat traffic was heavy. Early one morning, a few of us saw a crocodile swimming in the calm water. Jelly fish moved in during 3 day cold front, stung several times, no issues. Few sand fleas and mosquito bites. No washrooms on the beach, are at far ends of pools. Layout map they give you shows washroom on beach in front of villa 33, it’s not. If don’t want to pay US$15 each way to go into town, can find plenty at Sabor and Secrets gift shops. Few vendors on Mexican night at Portofino. Front desk will change US$ into $1’s. Not impressed with Air Transat reps. Only saw Javier at his briefing. Informed us co-worker is there once a week, to check binder for timings. No timings, just the words “on call”. No mention if tap water potable/brush teeth, whether we had to pay a departure tax, etc. These and other points are always covered. Neither did he tell our group what dining options were at Secrets, and what cost. Departure day co-worker appeared briefly, but never informed us flight delayed. We called for taxi as scheduled and ended up sitting at airport when could have been more comfortable waiting at the resort. Sign posted at bars: “We avoid the use of straws to protect the environment! Did you know? A straw takes 100 years to decompose releasing the chemicals with which it was made. We will be glad to provide one in case you need it.” Kudos to AM Resorts for taking this step. We were also impressed with a bartender’s actions. A young girl maybe 12 yrs old asked for 2 beers for her parents. Luis asked her to identify where they were sitting on the beach, and once poured, he personally delivered the drinks, never handing them to the underage girl. Thank you Luis and management for not directly or indirectly serving alcohol to minors. Resort was clean, food pretty good, and service came with a smile. Had a nice time. We were not ill in any way, nor were other guests we spoke to. Having also stayed at Sunscape Curacao, we prefer Sunscape Sabor. The only thing that would have made our holiday better was having some bare sandy areas in the ocean to swim and play.

BEWARE, BEWARE.....some employees are thieves.

Our second time to this hotel and boy were we disappointed. Will never go back there. In the week that we were there we heard of at least 10 robberies and believe me they can get into the safe. Our daughter lost her phone which we knew would never be returned. She had $400 taken from her safe. They were kind enough to leave the one's!!. Our friend had his phone stolen but they were kind enough to leave the cover!! When we got home yesterday my husband noticed his dive watch is missing. So many others to mention but think you get my point. We found that even after reporting all this that no one in management seemed to give a damn. Pros: Food was great and rooms okay. Clean up your act Sunscape Sabor.

The grounds were pristine and the service fantastic! Juan Carlos (bell boy), Ricardo (bartender) and Justo (server) were particularly amazing and attentive! The four restaurants provided sufficient variety. We also rented a Jeep and went sightseeing one day, with assistance from the staff. The rooms do need updating badly. We were in the top suite with the outdoor jacuzzi and still had a shower with a tub that was dilapidated. The water also was barely warm in our showers. Most of the beach was too rocky to spend much time in the water, unfortunately. Many of the visitors who had water shoes navigated it just fine and snorkeled around the reef. There were two pools (no swim up bars) that were very nice and the main pool had activities each day. Overall, a very nice resort!

Beautiful setting but.............

This resort has so much potential but until some effort is put into remodeling the rooms you might find staying somewhere else to be a better option. We found that although we were told all remodeling done 12/1-it did not mean the rooms that were in need of repair 3 years ago when we visited had been redone. We were told different stories with every front desk person we talked to. The grounds and setting are beautiful and the food is ok but with little variety. Lots of steps around resort so not suitable if have any kind of issues that restrict your activity.

I took my daughter to Sunscape over Christmas and New Years. It was one of the cheaper all inclusive resorts that I could find so I wasnt expecting much, which as it turns out was a good thing. The food was edible but that is about it. There was a very very foul smell (sewage) right by our room. I asked for a different room however they were full so it wasnt possible. When you ran the water that same smell was in the water. It was very very unpleasant. We used bottled water to brush our teeth because the tap water stunk so bad. And here is the deal breaker for me. Our dive operator told us that Sunscape is now charging them $2 per diver if you get picked up and $2 top get dropped off on their pier. I have been diving in Cozumel for years and find this to be unbelievable. If it weren't for that I would be willing to go back. But since they are gouging all the other business owners I will go elsewhere.
