My ladyfriend and I booked a four-night package out of LA in mid-June and had a nice quick getaway. The hotel was wonderful but not without a few drawbacks. The package was really cheap and made all the cons well worth it. We spent the vast majority of our time relaxing at the pool and beach taking advantage of the great service and all-inclusive bar.
-Service was impeccable and the staff were very friendly. Many speak English.
-Food was good just as long as you skip the buffet and go to one of the smaller restaurants.
-Drinks were awesome. Frosty Modelo Especial and Negra Modelo flow from taps like golden jungle waterfalls.
-Rooms were clean, attractive, and the bed was amazing. Pay a little extra for an ocean view room.
-The pool and beach are beautiful, comfortable, and well-served. However, keep in mind that if there is a south swell the waves might be a bit strong for a casual swim. It was calm when we were there.
-The effects of the earthquake are profound. There are cracks in the concrete exterior, hallways, and stairwells almost everywhere.
-The elevators are slow. We had a room on the 3rd floor and just took the stairs.
-Friday evening and Saturday were very crowded. Seems like a lot of Mexican families like to come for just a night or two. Make sure to claim your spot by the pool early, get drunk, and make friends. Or alternatively, take a day trip. Monday and Tuesday were relatively deserted.

Where do I begin? It's tough for me to write a negative review (my first ever) but I feel that potential travelers need to hear the truth. Frankly, I'm confused by the myriad of positive reviews this hotel has received in the last couple of months. We were guests at the Sunscape Ixtapa June 10-13 before transferring to a different hotel. Bottom line, this hotel did not meet our standards in two basic areas: safety and cleanliness. Why?
1. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE: Throughout the property including the exterior, hallways, stairwells, rooms, balconies, walkways, and elevators there is damage from the earthquake that occurred a couple of months ago. Two out of four elevators down, caution tape next to the restaurant patio, and horrible cracks everywhere! I am posting photos because they tell the truth, unlike the photos posted by the resort. The balcony railing in our family suite was lose and unsafe. I was uncomfortable allowing our three year old onto the balcony as the base of the railing was loosely attached to chipping concrete. I did not feel comfortable that this hotel could withstand a second quake of this magnitude. Even if all the cracks are patched and painted, this hotel has serious design and engineering problems. We spoke with a licensed contractor (fellow tourist) who said he thinks the foundation shifted and could see exposed rebar. I am disappointed that the hotel did not disclose the earthquake damage to me at booking. I would have been able to make an informed decision.
We did mention our concern to management and their response was, 1. the hotel is 30 years old, and 2. the cracks in the plaster are cosmetic and not in the foundation. Ok, there were several old hotels (looked same age as sunscape) up and down the beach that did not show the severe earthquake damage on the exterior. In addition, I not only witnessed cracks in plaster, but cracks in concrete- how is this merely cosmetic? Look at the pics and judge for yourself.
2. BIRD POOP: There is a serious bird problem at this resort. Bird droppings found on virtually every chair both on restaurant patio and lounge chairs. Food is left out on plates and birds swoop in to eat from them. In fact, birds fed from our plate while we were eating and we had to throw the food away. Actually, this isn't a "bird' problem, it's a "people" problem.
3. POOL SCUM: Pool is not maintained well. The tiles are slimy and covered in black or green mold. The small bridge that covers the pool is covered in chipping rusty paint. On our first day, I found a cigarette box wrapper, a few straws, paper, hair, leaves, wood chips, and brown scum floating around in the pool. Kiddy pool water was cloudy and full of trash as well.
4. BEACH LITTER: The beach sand and water is beautiful. Water is warm and sand a lovely color. The hotel area of the beach however, is littered by guests and not maintained by staff. Cups sit on tables for hours, and leftover plates with napkins sit in the sand without being picked up. Sit down to beach chairs and tables are sticky from spilled drinks left by previous guests.
I could go on and on but I think I made my point. There are hundreds of options in this region, budget to luxury? why go with a resort that is not prepared to provide a safe and clean space for guests? I do agree with previous reviews that staff is working hard to make guests happy and the food is tasty. But this is Mexico! Great service and great food are plentiful at most resorts. We switched hotels and found great service, great food and most importantly a clean & safe resort that made my entire family happy.
I just hope to shed some light on the current situation at Sunscape. I absolutely love Mexico, the culture, the language, the food, and mostly, the people. But this hotel, just didn't deliver. I'm sorry Sunscape, but this is the truth.

We stayed in a oceanview suite from June 3-9, 2014 and had a wonderful time. The resort is small and family oriented. The staff is what makes this resort We have been going to Mexico and staying in all inclusives since the 90's. If you want a relaxing vacation with food, drinks and great people, stay here. It is not a fancy place but one that makes you feel so at home. Everyone from the receptionist to the waitresses and waiters go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The entertainment staff is extremely friendly and work so hard to include all the vacationers. The beach is beautiful and so easy to access for walking, running and enjoyment. This is a quiet resort during the week and on the weekends it does become more crowded. We are not complainers and don't find fault with a lot so if you are very particular, this review may not help you. I would like to thank Blanca from the entertainment staff, Raymundo from the bar, Magdelina, Carlos, Claudia and all the other employees who were so gracious. We also were blessed with a banner on our door because it was our anniversary. These people work so hard and although we tipped, very few others did. Always treat the staff the way you want to be treated and you will enjoy your stay much more. Thank you Sunscape for a wonderful vacation!!!

Fabulous all inclusive in Iztapa, Mexico. My wife have made this our January getaway for the past few years and have always had a memorable stay. The rooms offer fantastic ocean views and the sounds of the waves lull you into a state of complete relaxation. The village square is across the street and is filled with fun places to eat and shop...if you ever wish to eat somewhere other than the resort...which has it's own mouth watering offerings! Excellent service is found all over the resort and locals are very friendly. For less then 25 cents you can ride to 'Zwat' and enjoy the sights and sounds of the former fishing villages. Sunscape offers a wonderful experience at this resort...5 Stars!

We stayed at this resort during the week of Thanksgiving and were pleased with the service and overall value. The staff were generous and helpful- both inside the hotel and at all of the restaurants. Our room was clean and spacious and if the elevator was slow we simply took the stairs. I enjoyed getting to know our servers and bartenders every day and they really made an effort to get to know our names and what we liked.
I especially enjoyed the beach where the sand was soft and we received drink service throughout the day. There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas as long as you arrived earlier in the day. The weekends were busier with a local crowd and the weekdays seemed quieter and less crowded. The water was warm, clear and we saw lots of sting rays which was really exciting. Remember to shuffle your feet on the sand as you wade out into the ocean!
I have no other all-inclusive travel experience to compare this to but the dining seemed average and easy to coordinate. You don't need reservations or a wristband. We did not enjoy the seafood restaurant and the service was slow so we simply left and tried another restaurant which was great. The breakfast buffet was a highlight.
I've seen poor reviews complaining about slow WiFi, but it's vacation! Who wants to use their computer?? Go get on the beach and enjoy the water!
There is the in-house "Vacation Club" that will try to sell you a timeshare. Once we said no they did not ask us again.
I had a pedicure at the spa which was fine. The spa coupons we received at check-in did not apply towards any salon treatments, only "spa" treatments.
My only complaint is with Apple Vacations. We used their travel concierge at the front to book our surf lessons and although we asked for a specific surf school, he booked us with someone else and didn't tell us. We had a great time, regardless.
