Mostly good but probably stay elsewhere next time

We stayed here as a family (kids 6 and 5) from Jan. 6-13 and had a very fun week. The kids really had a blast. This was our 4th time to the area. Here's the pro's and con's for us... Cons: Tiny workout facility. Very cramped when more than a couple of people using it. Terrible wifi. We refuse to pay extra for it so were only able to connect in the lobby. My wife was able to use it but I was never able to connect. Very poor poolside service from one of the waiters. We were tipping well but got ignored repeatedly when there were Mexican guests sitting around us. This is the 1st time we've experienced an obvious change in service in 10 trips to Mexico. It only occurred with 1 of the waiters though...the rest were great. The room. If we return we'd get a family room. Ours was fine but very small with 2 double beds and uncomfortable pillows. I like a firm mattress (and these sure were) but for some reason I woke up with a very sore back every morning. Kids didn't have an issue but my wife and I really disliked the pillows. Just used to our much softer pillows at home, I think. Also, there was a very strong sewer smell coming from the vent in the floor beside the toilet quite frequently. Nightly entertainment. It was good but not geared towards young kids at all. Also, the property is very small (which we liked) but if you are an early to bed person the nightly shows are loud and will definitely bother some people. Thankfully our kids were DONE by the time we put them to bed and the noise was not a factor for us. The beach. It's awesome and very walkable but the ocean here is not safe at all for young kids or poor-to-moderate swimmers. We knew this beforehand and spent no time deeper than knee deep in the ocean on this particular beach. There are many other far safer, more swimmable beaches in the area but you need to bus or taxi to them. Pros: Service. Overall excellent, other than that one waiter, with a couple of real standouts. Tony (entertainment staff), Luis (young bartender at Barracuda Bar), Alejandro (poolside waiter) and the bartender and the waiter that worked the Lobby bar all week. They were all excellent and we hope they get recognized for their efforts. Check-in/check-out was a breeze. Maid service was excellent and our mini fridge was stocked daily with water, beer and pop. Pool and kids pool. Kids area was awesome for the little ones and the lifeguard, Alfredo, who watched over the area most of the time, was excellent. Pool was clean and there was an adults only section roped off at the swim-up bar. Jacuzzi is also adults only. Foam party was a blast! Also, pool chair saving has an hour limit here which is nice. They hand out cards every morning stating that your items will be removed and brought to the lost and found if your chairs are vacant for longer than an hour. Food. There was nothing wrong with it. We only ate at the buffet (every breakfast and 4 suppers) and ate at the snack truck for lunches most days...excellent burgers! We don't go to Mexico to eat burgers but my goodness were they ever good! My wife had one lunch at one of the al la carte restaurants (the one beside the swim-up bar) and she said it was excellent. Our other meals were off the resort. Location. Right across the street from lots of good Ixtapa restaurants and shops. Right on a beautiful, walkable beach with lots to offer...200 peso messages, para sailing, banana boat, jet ski rentals, etc. Vendors are around but not overbearing and a simple "no gracias" keeps them moving along. We got our girls hair braided by a lady on the beach for less than 1/8th the price the hotel spa wanted to charge. Close to Ixtapa Island and Zihuatanejo (bus or taxi) for snorkelling and calmer beaches for swimming and many other excellent dining options, especially in Zihua. Size. It's a very small property and everything is very close. 4 or 5 minutes, tops, from the room to the beach. Once you're by the pool or on the beach, the bars and washrooms are only a few seconds walk away. We've stayed at far bigger resorts on the Caribbean side and far prefer smaller resorts like this one. We had a really awesome week here. However, as I mentioned, this is our 4th time to this area and the 5th different hotel we've stayed in (3rd on this beach). As much as we enjoyed our time here, Sunscape didn't provide anything more than we've received at other properties and provided a bit less in some instances, especially with the room, gym and wifi. When we return to this area again we'd probably look at staying somewhere with a more swimmable beach, larger room and gym and included wifi.

Nice vacation in November

We went to Sunscapes Dorado Pacifica (first time in Ixtapa) Nov 15- Nov 22 on an Air Canada vacation. We have stayed at numerous all inclusives in Mexico and stayed at a related resort, Secrets , last year. This vacation was a good price and we did not expect the quality of a 5 star Secrets. Hotel- We found Ixtapa to be a clean picturesque area with a lovely bay. The Sunscape is part of the AM group of hotels, which include Secrets, Dreams, etc. It is a tall hotel on a fairly small area (in relation to some resorts we have been to) with the Emporio right beside and a time share on the other side. There is shopping and restaurants right across the street. There is a nice bike/walking trail that takes you all the way to Playa Linda. The weather was hot and perfect each day with wonderful sunsets. We are thankful for the hotel’s policy that it is non-smoking except for the beach (where the wind clears the air!) and just off the property. It was a pleasure to be at almost any part on the property and not have to worry about second hand smoke. Room- We were booked into a sun club family suite as fortunately it was the cheapest ocean view room air Canada was offering at the time we booked. Sun club offers a “private” room off the lobby with appetizers, bar, and a place to relax after an outing. It offers lounges at the beach but we just used the regular ones to the left on the beach, not so crowded. We were originally on the 4th floor and requested a higher room and on the next day were given a room on the 14th floor. There are supposed to be 2 of these sun family club suites per floor. It was a very nice room, with two balconies. One which overlooked the pools and the ocean. The other was at an angle and overlooked the terrain south down the bay with views of the mountains and ocean. There was a king size bed and another day bed. The view was amazing, and we enjoyed our morning coffee and treat from Cocos each morning on the balcony (that has clear glass, two chairs, and a table to take advantage of the scenery) to start our day. The entertainment is all outside, just below our room, so it can be fun to watch from up high and sometimes it is loud and ear plugs are a necessity. There were themed shows, an aqua show in the water as well as Mexican and tropical buffets with entertainment. On the beach there was a wedding with dancing and a 15th birthday celebration with even more dancing. The hotels are close to each other so sometimes the music from the Sunscapes or others can keep you awake. Don't forget your earplugs. Beach- The beach was lovely, nice clean sand, and you can walk all the way up and down the bay. No seaweed but strong waves. As suggested we walked down the beach 10 minutes and enjoyed floating in the water where the waves were not so rough. We found the massage shacks and went for a massage every second day -200 pesos-$14 Canadian. I would suggest taking your own towel to lie on. On the way back one day by the Posada Real hotel we witnessed a turtle nest with baby turtles digging out and making their way to the ocean. Magical- they say the mother turtles return to that exact spot to lay their eggs Pool- the pool at the hotel was pretty but quite busy We love sitting at the beach rather than the pool which was good because on the weekend the hotel was very crowded with local families and it would have been very difficult to find a chair or even a place to float. There is a water slide and mini park which looked like it would be fun for the children. Food- We enjoyed the ala carte restaurants but did not like the buffet much and did not like most of the foods that were in the warming trays.(hence the 4 stars) But there were fresh made omelettes , waffles, and crepes most days so we always found something to eat for breakfast. Outings- We took trip advisor suggestions and took the old public buses. First we went into zihuatanejo. 8 pesos and they give change. Many, many shops, most selling the same things you see in ixtapa. This is the original fishing village with many fishing boats in the harbour and people trying to sell you a fishing expedition. We took the bus to Playa Linda - lots of crocodiles in the sanctuary especially by the bridge. We caught the ferry to Ixtapa island . We had our drinks and a meal at Lil Ciprianis and had the chairs as long as we wanted. As I read in TripAdvisor the washrooms were clean and the food was good. We loved snorkeling and saw many fish close to shore; you didn't have to go far out. The water did get stirred up by the waves as time went on. I suggest wearing water shoes as the sand has coral and shells in it. WE had our own snorkel gear, but you can rent there. My husband went with the hotel bike tour through the jungles, lots of shade and very pretty. You can rent a bike across the street and do the same tour at your own pace. My husband also went jogging on the beach and streets and felt safe. We ate dinner one Friday evening at Deborah's which is very close to the hotel. The food was fine, but we were the only people dining at that time, the eating areas were strangely quiet the week we were there. We enjoyed our vacation. It was a lovely getaway in November.

First time to Ixtapa. Only 25 minute shuttle to the hotel. We were greated by staff with a refreshment, and check in was quick. Our room didn’t look like the pictures online, but it was nice, and clean. The beds are very comfortable. The bar fridge is stocked daily, maid service very good.wifi is limited to the hotel lobby, slow and limited download ability. But, it is enough to contact home. The beach is great for walking, you can even snorkel right in front of hotel. Entertainment was ok, food was ok(fresh and well looked after, just not enough variety). Great markets out on the street, close to small local bars to venture out and watch a hockey game! Definitely would go back!

I wrote a review 2 years ago and we are still very happy with everything at the Sunscape in Ixtapa. The other day we attended the cooking show and it was excellent! Service is amazing and we always enjoy our vacation here. The entertainment team is the best in Ixtapa! Keep up the good work! 😊

Friendly staff

The staff at sunscape were all very helpful and friendly, especially Fredy Peñaloza. He went above and beyond to help me get my perfect souvenir from Mexico. He took a few days to talk to family and friends to help find what I was looking for. He did all this without asking for anything in return. Fredy is a very happy, caring helpful person.
