Beautiful Island !!!

My husband & I We Love the Island , 5 minutes from the airport this was a plus for us. Upon arrival , they greet us with a nice fresh fruit punch , but we have to wait couple of hours to get our room, not so good ! But we went to have lunch & walk a little to get to know the surrounding of the hotel.Very Nice and well keep ! The weather was great everyday sunny & hot in the 30! The beach is nice not so big but good enough to walk back & forth, the water is really nice a bit ruff at times but nice & clean, there is a beach at 10 minutes walk from the hotel is called Mullet Beach is unbeliavable Beautiful one of the Crystal water we have ever seen & we have travel to many Tropical Islands but this one was a plus ! The food is good, there is always something that you will enjoy , breakfeast is very good the bacon is really good & you can get your omelette freshly done , and many other seleccions like cereal, fresh fruits & juices and lots more ! The a la cartes restaurants are very good one is Italian (The Point ) it is really good we went 4 nights to dine there the food is amazing one of the best Creme brulee we have ever try ! even the Palm Grill was really good try it out . The drinks at this resort are amazing , the Pina Coladas are excelent since this is one of my favourite . Ramon at the pool bar is the best, such a hard working human been tries to please everyone with there request ! Keep up the great work Ramon! Most of the people working there were good doing there jobs but I observe , some of them & it look like they did not wanted to be there it could be because of the wages I dont know but greeting the people or knowledge them a little more with a simple, good morning or hello would help a little , that was my impression of some of them! I had notice too that they catered some more then others, one thing we always tip them, when we are going away for apreciacion of there jobs, but this time not so much !!! The room was great & the service was perfeccion, we were on the 6th floor with a pool & ocean view very nice the amazing thing was seeing the planes & the cruise ships passing by from our balcony it was an experience that will never forget ! For two dollars you can take the bus or a taxi for $ 30 dollars and go to Pittsburgh downtown ,watch out one of the guys the first morning at orientacion has told us that the taxi was $20 , so we took one & share the cost with two other ladies we meet , but for our surprise the cost was $30 NOT 20, anyway they are lots of store to shop !!!! In the evenings there is not much happening at the hotel however there was couple of nights that it was some entertainment, four girls & a young man from England that sang Beautifuly all the best to them , & on our last saturday we were there they performed at the Casino Royale right across from the hotel it was really amazing ! My advise to you is go with an open mind, we always do it may be ups & downs but this is everywere , we loved St Maarten , we will return next time to explore a little more on tours & see the French side, this was a pleasure for hubby retirement , fun in the sun & beach overall great vacation !!!!

Lovely Trip to Sonesta Maho Beach Hotel
ValCambridge, Cambridge, Canada
Wed Nov 30 10:43:51 EST 2016
We stayed at the Sonesta from Nov 20th through to 27th. This is a lovely hotel which is currently undergoing renovations. The higher floor rooms are completely finished. Once all the rooms and the main lobby area has been renovated this will be a really nice hotel. The Sunwing check in was really easy. All staff members were available to welcome us with cold towels, cold drinks and even cheese appetizers which was really nice. Check in was an absolute breeze and the bell boy came within minutes with our bags. My sister had been in touch with Anna Nelson via email to book a special birthday dinner for me prior to us arriving at the hotel. When we checked in Anna had left a message that she would like to meet us. . Anna asked if we would like to come back and see her the next day to make sure we were happy with our rooms. We were definitely happy with our rooms my husband and I had a partial ocean view that looked over Mullet Bay, no complaints here. My sister and her husband were lucky enough to get a suite on the third floor which they were very happy with. Anna also arranged a special birthday dinner for me and sent balloons, large fruit plate and even a chilled bottle of champagne to our room. After my birthday dinner at the Point restaurant the staff brought out a really nice selection of desserts and played happy birthday. This was all arranged by Anna, how thoughtful of her. She had marked the date on her calendar and made all the arrangements, this was a nice touch and very much appreciated. The resort is in a great location right on Maho beach. The pool is just outside the lobby and the beach is very close to the pool so everything is within easy access which we really like when travelling. There is a waitress who takes orders for the poolside guests and she always brings around the cocktail of the day. As part of the all inclusive package guests can dine at Ascot Pub and Jings restaurant in Maho village. The pub had really good food, the guests we spoke to really liked the pub and it was highly recommended to us by many of the guests and is well worth a visit. The food at this resort is excellent especially at the Palms Grill at night where they cook on the lava rocks. The Point restaurant changes their menu every three days and was also excellent. Guests can also dine at any of the restaurants at The Great Bay. We went to the seafood restaurant there and it was amazing, definitely worth a visit. It is nice to be able to walk out at night – Maho village is right outside with nice shops, a good variety of restaurants and the casino is right there too. The staff at this resort are very friendly and will go out of their way for you. The staff at this resort do not expect tips but it is greatly appreciated when you do tip them. The only place we did not get good service is the Ocean Terrace buffet restaurant at breakfast time. We found that this restaurant was understaffed for breakfast and sometimes it was hard to get coffee. Although there is a machine right outside the restaurant if this does happen. We had great service in the Palm Grill from Beni and Priscilla. All the Entertainment staff are very friendly and played some really fun games by the pool. There are three young ladies and one young man from England who are also working on the Entertainment staff , they will be at Sonesta Maho for six months. These young people are so friendly, they are very talented dancers and singers. They go out of their way to make sure everyone is having a good time – what a great group of young people. When we left the hotel it was also very well organized and on time, the Nexus staff came on the bus to ensure everyone was going to Toronto and to wish everyone a safe trip home. We will return to this resort. Thanks Maho Staff for a wonderful vacation. A big thank you to Anna Nelson for her special attention which we all really appreciated.

Not a great place. Firstly, it is way over priced for the service and amenities supplied in the un-renovated part of the hotel. The biggest disappointment was the food. Actually, there was hardly any food to be had at the "buffet style" supper. I had to stand in line a very long time for the truly meager food offering. There was another restaurant I lined up for. They were pretty adamant that there was no room for a single additional patron without an advance reservation. The room shower drain was plugged and flooded the bathroom floor. I was quite glad to leave.

Nice Stay Nov 17-24/ 2016

I will apologize now for my long winded account of our stay. I try to give future travelers a good picture of the resorts I review so they can get an accurate picture of what to expect before they go or book . Coles Notes version... awesome place. Book you won’t regret it! Basic Information: ~You get your beach towels from the hut right near the pool. You can’t miss it as you walk out of the main building heading towards the pool and beach. Towel cards are needed to get your towels and they are in your arrival envelope. ~There is wifi through out this resort and unless your streaming movies or something then the free wifi is all you need. We didn’t feel the need to upgrade because we could get service in our room as well as on the beach. ~You book your al a carte restaurants at the concierge desk opposite the casino bar. Reservations bookings are taken from 9:00 AM onwards . Make sure you get in line early because the spots fill up fast. ~Coffee , cookies and pastries can be found in the lobby just behind the casino bar. ~There are two electronic hotel information boards that provide all the information about the resort you may have forgotten. One is to the right of the main desk and the other is right by the ping pong table in the foyer just before you head to the pool area. ~There was a gaming station set up in the foyer opposite the ping pong table that seemed to keep kids entertained. ~This resort has its own small casino with slot machines but if you were interested in a bigger one with the full range of games its right across the street. ~Your check in envelope will contain two room cards , two towel cards and various information pamphlets about the area. ~Hospitality rooms can be obtained if you are departing late like us. The check out time was extended till 1 pm because we were being picked up at 7 pm ~ there is a Hertz rental car desk right inside the resort beside the main desk. They have the cars right there so no shuttle is needed to pick them up. Location: This resort has a perfect location. Located on Maho Beach its only a 5 minute shuttle ride from the airport. You’d be hard pressed to get a beer consumed on your ride over. If you were not provided a shuttle or you didn’t want to cab it you could virtually walk there in about 15 minutes. If your into night life, various bars and restaurants are right outside the doors of the resort on the strip. Other then at the casino you’ll have to pay for your drinks and entertainment. Maho beach is on the Dutch side of the island. English is the spoken language and we used U.S. dollars to tip and purchase items when we were out. Because of its ideal location Plane viewing is only a short 5 minute walk via the beach or the road. Seeing the planes land never grows tiresome and the noise is not an issue either. On take off, you may have to stop your conversation for ten seconds or so Most of the big planes are only about sixty feet above your head as they land. If you are adventures and risk the possibility of getting hurt by flying sand particles you have to experience a take off and get jet blasted at least once. Sooo cool lol Check Inn Even though there were three small bus loads of people from our plane arriving at the Maho. Check in went smoothly and was done in a speedy manor. While you waited you were given cool face towels and a fruit punch. You could ad your own champagne if you wanted to . All in all we might have been 30 minutes checking in and we were the last people off the last bus to arrive. Staff We have been doing three Caribbean trips per year sense 9/11 occurred and I can honestly say without a doubt that the staff here are the best we’ve ever encountered. They are all super professional and friendly. No sob stories of sick family members or employees looking for hand outs to be found at this location! I don’t understand the reviews that indicate that the staff are unfriendly. I understand everyone’s perception may differ but We didn’t see the “I don’t want to be here” or” you owe me something” attitude from any of the workers like we have at other resorts. I guess if you give sour your get sour in return. I normally don’t do shout outs to pat employees on the back but I’m going to mention just a few because the staff were so great. Rupert in the Lobby/Casino bar, Winston and Walter from the Beach bar did a great job and always welcomed you with a smile . Take some advice and call them by name rather then barking orders for drinks without manors. Alick the pool maintenance guy did a great job keeping the pools clean and he was super nice to talk to as well. Anna at the concierge desk was always concerned with how things were going on your holiday and tried to make things right if you encountered any difficulties. Lastly Pauline, she was one of the food service supervisors. Like Anna she was always asking if everything was OK. She was always buzzing around the restaurants ensuring guests were happy and the meals were good. This supervisor was not afraid to get her hands dirty and help the wait staff when things got busy. Room Even numbered rooms are on the pool side and odd numbered rooms get the street / roof top view. We had room 787 which had a view of the street and the end of the runway. The room had a nice comfy king bed, TV, coffee maker, several sitting chairs and a small dining table. There were ample dressers as well as the big closet for storage. The four digit room safe was in the closet along with an iron and ironing board. The bath room had a stand up shower with a rain forest shower head as well as the standard toilet and vanity with mirror. The voltage in the room was standard North American 120 v so adapters were not needed. The room also came with a fridge that was stalked daily with pop , beer and water ( two each) If you were fortunate enough to book one of the more expensive room types , all I can say is wow. We went into one on the day we were leaving and it was pretty impressive. Separate sleeping quarters ,separate living room, a bathroom probably three times bigger then ours was. Equipped with with a jaccuzi tub, Huge vanity, commode, toilet and stand up shower. Unfortunately someone has to get the dumpster view rooms. That’s a given but maybe the resort should change the room categories to indicate this so people aren’t wining later. Don’t list it as superior when really its not. (Superior being the lowest on the totem pole in room classifications) Beach / Pools There were three pools which were open 24 Hrs The main pool with the swim up bar, a small wading pool about 10 X 20 behind the waterfall and the kids aqua park pool. All the pools were kept clean and finding a lounge chair was never an issue. The new lounge chairs around the pool were not as comfortable as the ones at the beach. On a positive note I didn’t see one broken chairs like you do at other resorts. The beach was split into two sections, an upper section and a beach front lower part. Again finding chairs on the upper portion was never an issue but if you wanted to be right on the beach you had to have your towels on them by 7:30 or so to get one with an umbrella. If you didn’t care if you had shade or not there was a beach guy that would unlock stacked chairs and put them out for you at beach level. If you chose the upper section it was only a short 30 second walk down to the beach. The upper section was always cooler to sit at because it had a nice breeze. Swimming in the ocean was fun with a nice sandy bottom and clear water. It was not as rough as the Pacific Ocean and the undertow was not as strong either but you still had to be very careful entering. While we were there an older lady fell because of the waves and broke her knee. You’d be wise to keep your possessions on a beach table as there were days the waves were coming right up under the chairs and washing stuff away lol. Kids Aqua Park/ Kids club room: There was a small aqua park for the kids. It consisted of a small pool with several small water slides. The kids club room was located at the far end of the main foyer. I think it was some kind of day care ??? There is also a kids play area near the beach. Drinks /Bars There is no beer on tap at this resort. Every where you go you canned Heineken or Coors light. The house wine at the restaurants and bars weren’t bad and were drinkable. For you fellow Canadians , Finally a place that made good Ceasers!!! There was a different mixed drink each day and some were very good . There were several bars to choose from so you never had to walk far to wet your whistle. You have the lobby/casino bar, the pool side/swim up bar , the beach bar , the ascot pub/sports bar and the point bar. Getting a drink from the beach bar at lunch time is usually a lengthy wait ( maybe 5 minutes or more) because the single bar tender is filling orders for the palms grill restaurant servers. Other then that the service is quick and painless. Restaurants / Food: There are six restaurants to fill your appetite with delicious food. Only at the Point and the Palms Grill reservations are required with a dress code in affect. Jings Chinese, Ascot Pub, the Pizzeria and the Buffet require no reservations but make sure you look at the schedules because each of them are closed on certain days. We ate at all of these places and were not disappointed with the food selection, or quality of the food that was there. The buffet is located in the resort right next door(Ocean Point) . There were always adequate choices of prepared food or grill stations providing freshly grilled items. When something ran out the cooks were quick to replace the trays. If you didn’t see what you were looking for then just ask and it would be brought out. There have been comments made that they didn’t have a good selection. Really people? how much more do you need? And having more would just be wasteful. The menu’s changed from day to day in most of the restaurants for dinner, so if you went to an ala carte one night you would not have the same choice the second time you went there. There were different theme night at the buffet as well. It was hard to pick our favourite because all the food was so good. Gym /Spa : Cant comment on the spa because I never found it. It was suppose to be on the third floor but I didn’t see it. Apparently until renovations are complete the spa is over at the Ocean Point. The brochure indicates they have various packages with various prices. The gym Still IS on the third floor and is open 24 Hrs which is great for early risers like myself. Usually I’d just be finishing my workout when the seven o’clock rush would start to role in and people would have to settle for a machine they didn’t want. I usually had the place to myself starting at six AM. There were pool and beach aerobics as well put on be the entertainment staff. The pool session was comparable to other pool aerobic sessions offered at other resorts we’ve been to and was about 30-45 minutes long The Gym had three working tread mils, ( one non working-so they should either fix it or get rid of it) two steppers, one elliptical, two bikes. Free weights and weight machines and a couple yoga balls. There were never any towels in there so if you use one, bring one from your room. There was a spray and paper towels to clean the equipment after use. Entertainment : The entertainment staff worked mostly around the pool area trying to entice patrons to join pool side games. We only saw them a few times around the upper beach area where we hung out most of the time. At night there was some entertainment at various locations and I believe the big shows were held at the casino but I’m not sure. We mostly hung out by the Point bar or the casino /lobby bar where individual singers performed. This concept is good because it allows you see entertainment yet enjoy your conversations too. After all how may times do people need to see performers do “Grease “ ? Cons: Only three short issues but nothing that would prevent us from returning 1) the scheduled beach party was cancelled apparently because of the weather ???? If your going to schedule it then have it. Unless I was under the weather then I don’t recall the weather being a big enough issue they had to cancel??? 2) Not any fault of the resort ,but we unfortunately were woke up three nights in row by loud domestic disputes by our next door neighbours. The sound carries easily through the paper thin adjoining doors. My issue was on the third night when it was the worse and the women was being hurt by her partner. I called the front desk to report it and to have security come up. No one showed up. So I got dressed and went to the front desk to report it again. Finally security came up to our floor but things had settled down and nothing was done. The issue I have was that security should have checked that room that night to ensure the women was OK and secondly Management should have followed up with us the next day (seeing we had requested security for an issue, again to see if things were OK with us! 3) after a long day of travelling its nice to get to your room and get inside. Not the case for us. We stood outside our room for an hour ( I’m not kidding it was an hour) trying to get in because our room keys were not working. During this Hour I made three trips back down to the lobby to have the keys re programmed . While I was at the lobby on the second trip down security and maintenance was called to resolve our door issue. Maintenance never did show up and the security guy let my wife in using his master key card. His solution was to have security let us in until we got the issue. resolved. So when I got to the room after the second trip up from the lobby my keys still wouldn’t open the door so back I went for the third time. This time I requested another room and were promptly given one. Again seeing security was involved , Management should be doing some sort of follow up the next day with those involved to see if everything was worked out. Three set backs but nothing that ruined our stay. Well if you stuck with my review this far , then thanks. I hope I provided as much info to you as needed to make the choice in booking this resort. If there was something I missed then don’t hesitate to PM me or send me an email steelly64@hotmail.com and I will do my best to answer your questions. All in all we were quite satisfied with this resort and would return in a heart beat. Happy and safe travels S & S

Hotel is quaint .Doing some renovations but for the best, Its just big enough to make Friends with the staff . First of all the food is Delicious. My hat is off to the food preparation, waitress and waiters they all do a great job at making sure that you get what ever you need . One lady Bartender sorry didn't get her name but in the lobby bar was a little grumpy 3 times that I visited that bar . But everyone else Wonderful and willing to please. The pool is clean and clear great job to the maintenance staff. The ENTERTAINMENT TEAM IS SECOND TO NONE. They preformed flawless on the Resort and in the CASINO across the street. Made some great friends with the entertainment team. You could see there hard work in there performance every day and night. The plane's can be seen from the resort just a very short walk away. You can take the beach or the road it's about 8 minutes 0n the road and 12 minutes on the beach only because the beach is slanted to the water and tougher to navigate. Once-in-a-lifetime will you be able to stand near a JUMBO JET as it takes off , My advice is not to stand directly behind the jet but off to the side of the blast. As you will see people get knocked down and roll to the water. The air is hot and the sand is like being sandblasted it hurts . And the blast goes out to the beach approximately 1000 yards in the water so be very careful. You can take the local bus for 2 dollars to Philipsburg, lots of shopping and sights to see . We chose to rent a Taxi R&J TAXI SERVICE....MR JONES TAXI 410 1 (721) 559-4750 he was amazing and informative, seen the whole island and a special stop to feed the iguanas. He is always on time so be early with your group. And we had a group of 10 and fit comfortable in his van no problem. Booze is cheaper on the island than the duty free there is a lot of great shopping right in the area of the hotel . Shout out to the liqueur store next to the Sonesta GREAT PRICES. And to the jewelry store down the street JEWELS & LINENS ANIL DARYANI Who have everything you need for their Customers from Jewelery to liquor, bags, shirts, and Cuban Cigars. And if you talk nicely they gave us a beer and shot of Tequila LOL THANKS .. ANIL... Back to the hotel they put pop, beer and water in your mini bar fridge in your room daily which is GREAT. THERE IS A SMALL BEACH just around the corner from the resort called Mullet Bay a 10 minute walk away where you can SNORKEL FOR FREE . Get there early as it fills up fast you can rent chairs and umbrellas and a small bar on the beach for drinks . Just wanted to mention the ENTERTAINMENT TEAM AGAIN SHEP was the MC. And also sang .The singers and dancers were LAUREN , TAYLOR , AMY , MICHAEL , and my apologies if I missed anyone. You guys and gals were very professional and VERY ENTERTAINING . THANKS FOR MAKING OUR HOLIDAY..
