The service at check in was the worst. No Bell Man, front desk did not offer assistance with baggage, no one to greet us or provide orientation. The room while it was very big and clean did not provied the view described. The next day they did upgrade to a much nicer room than expected. The food, while good was repetitive. Sometimes all 4 restaurants had one or more of the same selections. They also changed their hours of opetation during our stay which added to the confusion. The overall cleanliness of the resort was excellent and better than most that we have visited. The pools were hardly used, which provided a lot of room and comfort for us. The casino only had entertainment on Friday and Saturday night. Too bad we did not have an orientation and were aware of such. On some evenings only an outdoor movies was available. Entertainment that was available started late and ended early. Would strongly recommend renting the gazebo for one evening if you have a special occasion. The service and food are well worth the extra price. As is with all resorts, a good hotel staff can make or break a vacation. This one was excellent. The beach is difficult to get to and tough for an inexperianced swimmer. I would rate this a 3.5 on a scale of 1 - 5 with 5 being the highest.

This was our second visit to the Sonesta Maho. While our first visit was pleasant enough, I cannot say enough about our second. Our room was beautiful, with an awesome view of the pool and ocean, the food delicious, the grounds immaculate, the pool sparkling and the staff was very helpful, Check in and out was a breeze, and every request was handled quickly, efficiently and with a smile! We loved it so much, we have already booked our vacation for next year and are counting the days till we can return to the "friendly island" and the Maho!

Sonesta Maho is a great hotel to stay at in St. Marteen. Clean, friendly staff and great food. It's in the perfect location and near everything. Be sure to go to the better beach near Sonesta, Mullet beach, the water is calm and clear. It's only a short walk to the other side of the hotel, you can take a bus too. The bus on the street right when you exit the hotel can take you to the Dutch and French side in under 30 minutes. Well worth it instead of taking a cab. My overall vacation was great until half of the hotel guests caught the norovirus, including myself. Most of us were sick and I bonded with several strangers over vomit and stomach aches. The hotel tried their best to accommodate to everyone by stocking up on bitters and pepto. I would definitely go back.

We booked last minute through Expedia with Sunwing. Our room was at the back of the hotel over the garbage with a smell of sewage. We requested to move our room and were told Sunwing reserves these rooms and hence the good deal. Having never booked with sunwing in the past we said we were unaware of this .We were told the hotel was fully booked and to return the next day to see if anything else was available. The next day there was a room for us with one bed and as we requested 2 this was not acceptable. Tried again and nothing else was open to us. So we endured our room which had a balcony you could not go out on with the smell and the noise of a large water container or whatever it was all day and night.
We did enjoy the resort otherwise. It was fun to watch the planes as long as you don't mind the smell of jet fuel. It was great having the close proximities of the beach and pools.
The pizza they made almost daily was delicious .
If it wasn't for the room and the attitude towards us regarding the room I would have given the hotel a better rating.

I've been to the Sonesta a few times without incident, but this time was quite different. Within a few days, all four (4) of us were violently ill. Stomach issues that were difficult to attribute to anything but food and drink preparation, as we all purchased the "all inclusive" food plan at the hotel, and ate nowhere else. By comparison, friends who stayed on the French side had no similar diarrhea, vomiting, body aches or headaches.
When we informed the front desk, the response was surprisingly muted. They behaved like they didn't know what we were talking about, which was hard to believe because there were other guests in the elevator, and on our floor, complaining of similar symptoms.
I expect to get a canned response to this review from Sonesta as a way to minimize this problem, if tripadvisor publishes this review, but I want to warn other travelers to be careful. Treat this hotel like you would the same place in Mexico, Cancun. For example, only drink bottled water, use the pool bar at your own risk. Don't drink ANYTHING that doesn't come from a can or bottle. As far as food, I would eat off site, across the street, for example, but PLEAAASE be careful with the food buffet because the temperature isn't properly monitored, the food not adequately heated or chilled.
Until the hotel admits they have a problem and actually publishes concrete steps that they have taken to prevent others from getting sick, I'd stay somewhere else. In the meantime, if you must stay here, I suggest you buy a huge bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer and tie it around your neck so that you can use it all the time. As far as the staff at Sonesta, I hope management can take this outbreak seriously and actually appoint an on site health and quality person to make sure that the staff is keeping their hands clean when preparing the meals.
This was truly disappointing for a vacation for which each of us paid over $2000.

On March 4, 2014, I contacted the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort Rerservations Department to request a credit card authorization form. This form is vital for my boss' upcoming stay at the hotel on March 28, 2014. I was very pleased the service I received from the Reservation Agent, Clint Violenus. I received the form immediately as promised and was advised to email it back directly to Clint so that the form would be processed right away. I sent the form this afternoon and within minutes I received a confirmation that the form was processed, That is what I call exceptional service. I would definitely do business with the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino again in the future.
