I chose this resort mostly for the adults-only setting as we sought a quieter, more chill environment and that definitely was a plus. For the sake of covering all the bases: *Property: Clean, well-kept and pretty modern. The room was huge, with a nice balcony fit for breakfast and every room has a full ocean view - can't beat that. I noticed others comment on a mildew smell in the room, we noticed sometimes but it wasn't bothersome. The decor was a bit cheesy and the room a little too dark even with all lights blazing. We were near the elevator and didn't hear other guests much at all - pretty quiet. The bed was so comfortable and the shower was nice. Gym was great, we used it a few times. *Food/bars: Food was OK. We went into town to the Malecòn and had better of course, but for an all-inclusive they were super accommodating for us as vegetarians. Drinks were decent. The wine wasn't as awful as I expected. Room service was great. We went to the Now side for the Beatles show which was totally cheesy. We hit up the "club" afterwards which was hilarious - it felt like a bad wedding. I highly recommend getting out to town for a meal or two if you have time, as it's a cheap cab ride and the local restaurants are ample/awesome; PV is safe for nights out and the cost is reasonable pretty much everywhere. *Pool/beach: I was disappointed by the beach. If you don't mind vendors it's fine, small and unfortunately they put up a volleyball net which takes up a huge section of it. We were asked about four times to buy things which was annoying; the view was obstructed by the aforementioned VB net and activities and we actually never went back after about one hour. Pools were excellent as was the swim-up bar. The service was OUTSTANDING. Shout out to Alberto for being a rad dude and taking care of us! *Service: Overall, really great. Alberto at the pool, Omar at the lobby bar, and the restaurant servers were awesome. Housekeeping forgot us a few times, as well as washcloths. They were quick to fix this once I called. A few pointers: *As other reviews mention, politely decline the timeshare presentation. *Get cash and tip!! The staff works so hard to keep things running well, and deserve the gratuity. Google tipping practices in Mexico for advice on amounts. They remember those who tip and the service reflects that. *Leave the resort for a day and hit the Malecòn. Or, take a cab to Le Kliff and have the most memorable, beautiful evening meal. Both options well worth it. *Choose your pool chairs early! If you get to know one of the pool service staff they'll also keep an eye on your chairs for you (leave a book or some personal item.) Overall, a nice stay. I don't think I'd stay here again, but would try other resorts in the Secrets/Now/Dreams group elsewhere.

Nice resort in a beautiful town.

Secrets Vallarta Bay is the second resort in the Secrets brand we've visited. SVB is slightly more modern than Secrets Playa Mujeres (our first stay) in the lobby and restaurant areas. The food at this Secrets resort was also better than the food at Secrets Playa Mujeres. We splurged for the "Chef's Table" dinner ($100/p as UVC members). The food was outstanding and the service (and wine service) was remarkable. There were at least 6 courses (maybe seven)...and they were more than willing to make substitutions based on your food preferences. I'd highly recommend this dinner as a "treat" or special occasion. The included restaurants were great..the food very delicious. However, even here the food was not as good as most Sandals resorts. The beaches in PV aren't the nicest. The seas are rough and the sand is very rocky. If you enjoy water sport (in the ocean) the Pacific won't compare to the Caribbean. However the pools at SVB are very nice (2 main pools). We never had an issue getting beach or pool-side lounges. Even as late as 10am, there were still many available chairs. One downside was the "stacks" and "rows" of chairs on a large concrete expanse. There were dozens of these chairs not next to the beach or a pool, just lined up. If you are a noon riser, you might end up in one of these "less-than-prime" real estate spots. Service was like just about every Mexican resort...OUTSTANDING. Tipping a couple dollars here and there will guarantee excellent service from day to day. Bar tenders, wait staff, and restaurant staff were all fantastic. There was less scheduled entertainment throughout the day at SVB. At SPM, there were practically hourly activities such as guacamole class, tequila tasting, cigar rolling, spanish class, aqua zumba/aerobics, volleyball, etc. At SVB there was aqua aerobics, volleyball, and almost daily foam parties. However, there was a very nice variety of nightly musical entertainment at the lobby bar. Similar to how SPM is next door to Dreams (a kid-friendly resort), SVB is even closer to Now (another kid-friendly resort). At Vallarta Bay, many of the restaurants are on the Now property meaning you'll see kids at dinner. If you're paying for and expecting an adults-only experience, you will have to omit several restaurants if you plan on staying on the Secrets property. We were only on the Now side for a few dinners and didn't experience loud kids in any of the restaurants. We did hear some screaming and see some running in the Now lobby. This might irritate some people while others won't mind it at all. The beach vendors get a tad obnoxious over the course of the week. Even after shaking your head and repeatedly saying NO, they continue to ask you to buy stuff. We actually moved to the pool-side chairs later in the week because they were overly persistent. The town of PV is an absolute gem. It is very safe and there is so much to see and eat/drink in town. For an "adventure", take the bus. For a faster, more comfortable ride, take a cab downtown. Walk the boardwalk (touristy) but be sure to get into old Vallarta (south of the boardwalk). There are many great restaurants that have excellent food and cheap drinks and great service too. We purchased hand-made glasses from the glass shop, ate tacos, drank margaritas, and walked through the cobblestone streets. You can also walk off the resort (and take a left) to find a massage for $20-25 for a 60-70 minute massage. The rooms at SVB are nice, if not a bit worn (loose floor tiles, old furniture, cracked counters/sinks. Our AC didn't cool well, so if you aren't used to heat and humidity, it might be a bit uncomfortable. I think we generally were able to get the room down to around 73 degrees F which still feels refreshing after sitting in the sun all morning. All of the rooms have a minibar and jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower. Our tub was a little dingy/dirty so we didn't use it. Secrets has a "Preferred" room category available at an additional cost. At some Secrets resorts, the cost is worthwhile as it gets you into a private lounge (premium drinks and finger food), a private pool, and a better room. At SVB, the "preferred" pool is tiny and right next to the other pools. Also the only difference in the room is the jacuzzi tub is on the balcony instead of in the room. At SVB, the preferred upgrade didn't seem worthwhile. There is a well-equipped fitness room with some dumbbells and universal machines as well as treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes. And there is a fantastic spa. Ask about the hydrotherapy circuit (free for UVC members). You get access to the sauna, steam room, cold pool, massage pools, and hot tub all located in a very peaceful, tranquil setting. Finally, this is a "high rise" type resort. There are 2 buildings on the Secrets side and 2 buildings on the Now side. The main building has 15 floors, so expect to be riding elevators all week. For some this might matter, for others not so much...but still worth mentioning.

Wonderful Service...Wonderful Resort

My husband and I literally just returned from a one week stay at Secrets...what can we say other than, WOW! We are UVC members and we were treated like royalty from the minute we stepped out of our vehicle. To be honest, we were treated like this before our arrival as I was in contact with service members to arrange for an upgrade to a swimout room. Thanks so much to Andrea and Cynthia for all of their help. We upgraded to the Master Suite Swimout and loved this room as we had a direct view not only of the pool but also of the ocean. It would be impossible to name all of the helpful staff members as everywhere we went we were greeted with smiles and help with anything we required. Staff at the Market Cafe were incredible, the servers at the pool were so helpful in keeping us hydrated, and the front desk members and bartenders at the Preferred Club were so accommodating. Bety, our housekeeper was so proficient, friendly, and ensured that we had everything we needed. A special thanks to Rol, the pool manager, who really went out of his way to chat with us and spend some time making us feel welcome. Are there vendors on the beach? Yes! Are there people partying at the pool? Yes! However, everyone vacations differently. If you don't like vendors, stay away; if you don't like to party, stay at a "less rowdy" part of the pool. This resort has something for everyone and you can make the most out of your trip here. We have already booked to go back for Xmas! Thanks to everyone at the resort; we can't wait to "come home"!

Party Resort, Terrible Beach

The resort and staff were amazing, our room was pleasant and comfortable, the beach and vendors were horrible. You could not enjoy the beach without walking through a crowd of vendors that would not take no for an answer. I expect vendors in town and on the streets of Mexico, but I was not expecting them on the hotel grounds. The beach itself is beautiful from a distance but not very welcoming, there are more rocks than sand to walk through so you cannot go barefoot, and the rocks wash into your shoes when you walk. My husband and I are not party people, so that is where we went wrong on our planning for this trip. We thought that Secrets would be more of a romantic get-away, but instead it was a constant party. The music was loud at night and we found it impossible to sleep until about 2, which makes it difficult to wake up early for fishing. If you are going on vacation to party this is the perfect resort for you, if you are wanting some down time to relax you should probably look somewhere else.

My wife and I stayed with four other friends for seven nights. We have previously stayed in another Secrets resort on the Caribbean side of Mexico (Secrets Silversands). We have stayed a a couple other resorts on the Cancun side as well. Keep in mind everyone has different expectations for AI resorts. Positives: great food and beverage service, exceptionally clean rooms, good food, meticulous attention to appearance and cleanliness of grounds, convenient location in Puerto Vallarta, and phenomenal sunsets. Great bartenders and servers are also a high point such as bartender Edgar and server Juan. You guys were awesome! High point of the week: foam pool party Negatives: There is a non-stop barrage of beach vendors along the entire beach. They do not stay on the property edges or behind any rope either. To swim in the ocean or to play beach volleyball one must navigate through these peddlers who will pursue you on foot and offer to sell you everything from sunglasses to jewelry to horse rides to even drugs. They even boldly walk up to the pool area waving their wares. I can't imagine trying to relax on a beach chair. Potential Concerns: It is important to know that this adults only resort shares an entertainment staff, restaurants, and nightly shows with the adjacent and adjoining family friendly Amber Now resort. This may or may not be of concern to you. However, I found several aspects of this situation troubling. First of all, the entertainment staff is split between these two resorts. That means that most of the day does not have structured and fun activities planned and occurring around the main pool areas on the adult Secrets sides except for water aerobics, water volleyball, beach volleyball, and a once weekly foam pool party. Other than those activities, the swim up bar pool is a quiet place with no activities. Compared to another adults Secrets resort I have been too, this one seemed boring at times during the day. The shows were on the family friendly Amber Now side. For the most part, the shows were good; however, at a stand alone Secrets Silversands adults only the shows were more adult orientated (not raunchy or anything), just more intended for only adults. As previously mentioned, several restaurants are on the Family Amber Now side. The resorts share a main entrance and are connected. Adults can visit either side, but 17 and under can only be on family friendly Amber Now side. If you want a chair by the main pool you need to be there by 6:00 in the morning or every chair will be saved. They won't be saved by vacationers either. They are saved by a resort staff member wearing a khaki uniform and a red medical bag who spends the day walking the beach. He literally saved dozens of these prime chairs for guests. I watched him doing this all week. I'm not sure how much people tipped him to have him do this for them, but I have never seen a resort worker doing this in the other Mexican resorts I have visited. There are many older guest staying at this resort. Our group members are all in their forties, so we are not spring breakers by any means. However, the place had a Palm Springs, Florida or Arizona retirement community vibe at times. I know we all will be older eventually and I am not trying to be offensive to older people. I am just trying to give a complete picture of a significant demographic at this resort. FYI, the resort worker in khaki usually saves these prime party pool chairs for the older guests (50- 80 years old). There is never music played at the party pool with the swim up bar. I've been to several AI resorts; all the others regardless of adult only or family friendly have music playing all day. Guests had to bring their portable Bluetooth speakers. The only time fun music is provided by the resort is during water aerobics, the once weekly foam party, and occasionally when the entertainment staff decides to visit for a brief 5 minute amp up of the crowd and the leaves again. People are drinking all day and want to have a good time. They want music. They want to turn off the adult switch. This is an adult only resort and not a retirement community. Again, I know people have different expectations. I don't think I would stay at this resort again. In fact, I will not stay at an adult only resort that adjoins and shares staff with a family friendly resort again. The company seems to be trying to get by with half the needed staff and you will not have a truly adult only experience.
