Secrets St James

This resort hotel caters more to an age group of 25-45 with the type of music and late night bars open until 2:30 AM. Not much to do here in the evening unless your into the late night bar scene starting about 10:00 PM. The smoking areas are not regulated so smoking can be an issue if someone sitting next to you at the pool starts lighting up every 20 minutes. The pool seats were totally gone by 8 AM so you cannot just move to another seat. Breakfast and lunch buffet restaurant was good but dinner food quality fair at best. Get ready for a lengthy time share sales pitch during checking in.

One big mark against them

During my entire travel time from Chicago to the resort there was only one time my suitcase was not in my possession and that was the approximately 40 minutes from when I arrived at the resort to the time the man delivered my suitcase to my room. Unfortunately, during that same 40 minutes, ALL of my cigarettes and my electric toothbrush charger went missing from the outside pocket of my suitcase. Being that cigarettes are VERY expensive in Jamaica I can understand how tempting it would be to steal mine but the electric toothbrush charger??? Don't quite understand that other than they were in the same pocket. When I mentioned this to the concierge she immediately suggested I either put them in a different suitcase or didn't pack them at all. Well, I checked the bags of the others I traveled with and they were not there AND upon arriving home they weren't here either so someone at the resort absolutely went through my suitcase and stole my possessions. I am grateful that everything they stole was replaceable BUT that's really not the point. Pretty sure I won't re-visit this particular resort seeing that I fear being stolen from again.

This hotel was just what we needed for a few nights away from reality. The pools are great and the service at the pool bar was quick enough with a full bar. The hotel rooms were large and the beds very comfortable. The staff was on top of refreshing the room and restocking the fridge when needed. We will definitely be back soon!!

My wife and I just returned from 8 days at the Secrets St James resort and I was ready to come home after 5 days. My wife had two occasions of minor food poisoning issues. (Woke up on the middle of the night with cramps and dirreeha that took 12-18 hours to recover from just to have it happen again.) Talked to another couple that was feeling ill as well while we were there. Both thought it was poorly prepped mussuls in a seafood soup they both had. Other issues included A/C broke in room (sucks when it's 91 degrees out), fridge broke in room (umm warm Red Stripes), room service was cold, check_in was painfully long. Those were all the issues, but the rooms and beach were beautiful, unfortunately the resort just lacked what they needed to make a good location a great vacation. I notified Apple during our trip that my wife and I were both very disappointed in Apple as this wasn't our first vacation with Apple and their rating for the hotel was high. Chicken carts by the beach was also excellent.

This hotel shad an excellent beach and excellent rooms. The only criticism we had was the food being sub par compared to other Secrets resorts we had been to. We loved the poolside entertainment, especially Stella on the entertainment staff. We will be returning!

We have traveled to many places and always stay at a 5-6 apple resort. I am not sure how this resort received 6 golden apples. Check in was slow, the lobby was dark and gloomy. The room was very outdated & the sofa was disgusting, covered in stains. Curtains were tore and loosely sewn back together. we did not care foe the open bathroom since there was 3 people staying in the room. It was also very loud as well. The rest of the resort was beautiful, dining & bars were great. The people were the best part. Very friendly.

From the moment we stepped off the shuttle we felt as we were home... the hotel greets you this way with a “Welcome Home”. We had an exceptional stay. The room 3512 was great! It over looked the pool and ocean. From sun up to sun down my husband and I were in paradise. We cannot say anything less for the food, entertainment and the Jerk Grill was the best. This was our first time in Montego Bay but will not be the last.

Hard to find bad things to say about my stay
hallejankowski, Atlanta, Georgia
Thu Mar 21 19:00:47 EDT 2019
My mom and I were just there for my spring break 3/10 - 3/17. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the VIEWS are stunning. I have so many great things to say about this resort, so I will split it up into sections: 1.) Dining: Dining was, overall, wonderful! We would eat the delicious and large breakfast buffet at the World Cafe every morning. The service there was great. As for lunch and dinner, the poolside spots and the other restaurants like Blue Mountain, Portofino, Himitsu, etc... were all amazing. Great food at all of these places. If you fancy Italian, you must go to Portofino (the best service we had all week was from Trayan at Portefino)! There is also the option to order from the *almost* 24 hour room service. ** It is important to note that life in Jamaica moves slower, so don't get mad when the service is a little slow - it's simply the pace of Jamaica. EMBRACE IT. 2.) Space: Crowded spaces were not a problem during the week because all guests have access to the space at the neighboring resort on property, Secrets Wild Orchid. If you want to get a good spot to lay out by the pool or beach, especially a spot under an umbrella, I suggest waking up a little early to set some towels up. 3.) Activities: There are so many things to participate in during your stay. Some of the activities include free daily bike tours guided by a staff member off resort, Jamaican jerk cooking classes, silent discos, yoga and aquacise classes, live music at the Piano Bar every night, water activities, spa treatments, and many fun pool-side activities throughout the day provided by the resort's entertainment team (Sweetness, Richie Rich, Red Stripe, and Obie made our week extra special! WE LOVE THEM!). Definitely check the resort's bulletin, which can be found in the lobby and posted by the pools for information about events on that day. 4.) Rooms: The rooms are very nice and the cleaning service is thorough. 5.) Drinks: All the poolside bars and restaurants had great service. The bartenders Alvin, Romaine, and Dwayne at the Secret St. James pool are hilarious and were very likable. 6.) Environmentally-friendly: The resorts are adamant on protecting their lush vegetation and waters, so it is a very clean resort. They also limit the use of straws, but will give you one upon request, or if the drink needs one. Another thing to note is that they must be good about spraying around their resort, because bugs and other insects weren't a problem at all. 7.) Extra Tidbit: A lot of people take vacations to take a break and chill out, but I highly recommend soaking up every second and engaging as much as you can while you're there. It will make for a more rewarding and memorable week. That could mean participating in the poolside games, getting involved in other resort activities, or just getting to know some of the staff. One of the best parts about my stay was meeting and engaging with the people on staff, who are all very nice. I learned that you ARE allowed to bring people on the entertainment team (I'm not sure about any other staff) out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I highly recommend it. If you're heading to lunch, consider inviting one of them to get to know more about Jamaica and about him/her. Overall, I had a 10/10 week and I hope to return soon!

You’d expect it to be clean at the price you pay

Well start off by saying there were some okay things about our stay. Alvin and romaine were amazing when it came to the pool swim up bar and service. The only restaurant we liked was the Italian and Michael was great! Besides that, we won’t be back. To start, we waited for a long time to check in and kept getting skipped over. Patricia was really nice once we finally got to check in. We got to our room and the room smelt musky. Okay it’s the Caribbean it’s humid, I get it. Well, our “mini bar” wasn’t even stocked. No water, no nothing. Our view from our room was nice though. Well, our room was less then clean. Our pillows had stains on them, the shower had clumps of other people hair, I had to clean th tub out to use it and still found other people’s hair once I was in, and parts of the tub...started floating with me.... the bathroom looked dirty but it was just odd paint jobs I think, and hope. We did tell the front desk about our issues. They came and “deep cleaned” but the hair from others was still in our shower and the pillows still had stains. We also had to call one day because it was almost 2 in the afternoon and our room hadn’t been cleaned yet and the housekeeping was nowhere to be found. We went to the gym once and decided to skip it the rest of the trip because it’s about the size of the room, possibly smaller and the equipment is literally falling apart. You lay down on the leg press and it’s so worn out you sink into a mold of someone else. As you go to press, the whole machine wobbles and shakes. Other machines had broken pins so the whole thing moved around. Then the spa, they booked me for a service they apparently did not have anymore and I was already changed and paid by the time they told me. They did refund but it was frustrating. The food... doing get me started. It was less then subpar. The Mexican restaurant was a joke. I could have made better tacos with my eyes closed. The seaside grill... do NOT get lobster. Unless you like your lobste to hav tha same consistency as your mashed potatoes. The filet was edible, however do not get the ribeye it’s the cheapest ribeye they can find. Their lunch is not bad though. Oh yeah, their snorkeling is not included either. It’s on “complimentary” swim to a bouey and back....after that you have to pay for them to take you out. We were just so disappointed when we spent the amount of money we did. My parents stay at sandals and haven’t ever had these issues and get snorkeling AND scuba diving with equipment included...and paid 2000 less then we did for 8 nights and we only had 6 nights. Maybe wild orchid is better but other couples we met had the same issues at St James. Oh, the room service also, is a joke! The selections are minimal and poorly made. We were really hoping maybe we just had a bad room but man, the trip was just a bummer.

Perfect Choice for us

Thought the hotel was just breathtaking, and Montego Bay unlike anywhere else. Were greeted on arrival by warm staff, warm weather, and cold drink, customer service deserves a 100%+. The suite was immaculate, and very big, with a great view that was just gorgeous every morning. The piano bar was our favorite by far, we spent lots of time there having drinks and relaxing. All of the restaurants were great, no complaints. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here, I look forward to returning next winter.

Falls a little short of other Secrets we have visited but still ranks high

I think the title says it all. We have stayed at two Secrets resorts in Mexico, one in Dominican Republic and now this one in Jamaica. We would say that the two Mexican ones are higher on the scale when everything is considered. However, our vacation was still very nice and we would recommend this resort as well. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: Wonderful staff attitude. From our arrival to departure everyone was pleasant and helpful. Special shout-out to Tasheka at the World Cafe who greeted us every day with a smile and made our day. We also saw her on occasion at other restaurants with the ever-present friendliness. Nice beach. While it is not the largest it is clean, free of rocks and seaweed and certainly not small. Plenty of room to relax and enjoy. Water sports crew is very helpful and friendly. Towels: Always available throughout the day for pool and beach. Other positives were the housekeeping for both friendliness and performance. Visits twice a day. The mini-bar well attended to. Room service was prompt and a good selection. The room itself was very clean, large and well-appointed. The grounds are beautiful and meticulously groomed. Cons (although mostly minor in the scheme of things): Forget about e-mailing the resort with requests. We tried twice and never got an answer to our request for an upper floor. Compare this with Mexico where we received a prompt and courteous response in less than twenty-four hours. As to getting the upper floor we were told none were available even though the requests were made a full month in advance and a reminder two weeks before arrival. Shade on the beach: Get ready for the towel / chair dance. People go out early and hold down spots and often don't even use them or for a very brief time. While the resort policy says this will not be accepted there is no action in place and no attendant watching. Palapas are in demand and not plentiful or as wide as Mexico. Since the chairs are very heavy compared with standard beach fare, moving them as the sun travels can be a challenge. It's sad to see so many reserved spots sit empty for a good part of the day while people search for chairs and shade. Restaurants: Buffet breakfast service and food were excellent. The a la carte restaurants were average except for the Jamaican restaurant which was our favourite and very very good. Service at all the restaurants though was friendly and welcoming and we love not having to make reservations for dinner. There was always some entertainment outdoors (or indoors when it rained) and drinks were plentiful. Preferred Club: The benefits are questionable. Snacks and desserts were so-so and there is no benefit on the beach as no section is reserved. The preferred pool is nice and quiet though. Entertainment: Average resort fare. Again compared with Mexico it was a little disappointing. Conclusion: The pros outweigh the cons. It is a very good resort and certainly deserves recognition as such. However, there are lessons to be learned from other Secrets resorts. While we keep mentioning Mexico, it is because both Maroma Beach and Akumal set the bar so high that our expectations use them as the standard now.

Third Visit in 16 Months

I stayed at Secrets St.James Montego Bay 3 times in the span of 16 months. Every visit has been great - from our hotel room (which they upgraded for us every visit), to the poolside bar, to the food. Romaine, Ryan, and Stella Star are great at what they do. We did miss Leo, as he was a great bartender and good guy that we came to know over our visits. We will be heading back this August as well and looking forward to staying at Secrets St.James again!
