Nice hotel, but in need of cleaning and maintenance
JEREMIAH S.
Oct 27 2017
We enjoyed our stay at the Secrets St. James, but there were a few things that lessened the beauty of it for us. There was a door badly in need of repairs that was constantly open. The elevator badly needed to be cleaned and the poor bar smelled so bad that we couldn't sit next to it. Service and food were overall pretty good, but noticeably better if you are a good tipper.

A Cruise Ship On Land

This was our first all inclusive resort and the reviews of others is as accurate as your own expectations and experience. If Secrets-St. James/Wild Orchid was in a different country I would surely go. The staff of the hotel does NOT go out of their way to make you feel special, welcomed or valued with a couple of exceptions. Their service did not excel but when pushed, met expectations. The Jamaica friendliness didn't extend to the staff of this resort. The landscaping is beautiful and the preferred club was well worth the money. They offer everything a cruise ship does but in limited supply. The food is okay and like most say, the deserts aren't very tasty. We were just a little underwhelmed.

Great pool and beach service. Tipping goes along way. Food was excellent for an all inclusive. Would like to have had low playing music at the pool. We'll definitely be back.

The only issue I had with this resort was the food. It was average, except for the poolside jerk chicken which was excellent! The resort itself was very nice and the beach was beautiful.

A little disappointed...

We had very high expectations going in to this resort never having stayed at a Secrets before and the amount of money spent on this vacation. There is a definite culture difference in Jamaica compared to Mexico and the Dominican, and that could potentially explain some of our issues with this resort in particular. Let me start with the good: the beach. OMG, just completely gorgeous, calm, warm water. The prettiest beach we've ever been to. The sand is grainy and shelly compared to the powdery white sand of Riviera Maya and Punta Cana. But just beautiful. The sea life was amazing to watch from the rocks and piers. We loved going on nature walks every day. Now the bad.... Our stay started with a loooooooong wait for check in followed with some less than friendly bartender interactions. I will say we were quite tired and hungry from the travel and airport encounter but we really are not hard to please. It was immediately that we noticed that no one was really making an effort to help us or even be friendly for that matter. If I would go out of my way to be nice, then it would be reciprocated. Again, maybe just the culture difference. We were pleasantly surprised by an upgraded view we did not pay for, but then immediately let down by the poor condition of our room. The water pressure in the shower and bathroom sinks was terrible. And the toilet was very difficult to flush. The amenities that Secrets advertises (robes, slippers, steamer...etc) were not in our room to begin with. It takes the fun out of a luxury resort when you have to request these things. We fought most of our stay with the door key lock (in which they changed the battery but still would not let us in without a fight). The last let down was the food. It was just very hit and miss. Some of it was outstanding and met our expectations -- especially the jerk chicken cart!! So good! But some of it was just terrible. Ie: Pepperoni pizza with pepperoni that stained the cheese pink! Yuck! I honestly feel bad complaining about this stuff, but we truly expected more from the Secrets name. I have a hard time recommending this place with all of the issues we faced during our stay. This place could be incredible -- but needs some work.

Amazing vacation and resort. Beautiful, quiet for the most part. However service in several of the restaurants for dinner was awful....slow and rude especially in the Mexican restaurant. I did not appreciate at check in them trying to get us to commit to a preferred club breakfast when I haven't even seen the resort. Ask me half way thru my stay. The concierge was apparently closed at 6. They promised us a fan for 2 nights...it never showed. Called front desk and was on hold 8 mins and ended up hanging up. Bar staff was excellent at the pool bar and beach! Good was amazing.

NO ADA & Watch out for concierge!
STEPHANIE S.
Apr 16 2017
I booked ADA Ocean View (paying premium for ocean view) only to travel 1,550 miles to find out at check-in that they do not have ADA Ocean View. The ADA room given viewed back of kitchen. Grab bars were coming out of the wall and the shower seat was broken. Fortunately Crys-Ann at the front desk found adaptive items that we could use in an ocean view room (with some ingenuity) that we moved to the following day. Everything would have been great IF the concierge had not constantly called our room multiple times early every morning trying to get us tour the facility and join AM Resorts. She was RELENTLESS!!!

Experience at Secrets ST. James
JAMES S.
Apr 05 2017
Was overall a nice resort. There was, I feel, a major issue with the bedding. The duvet that was sandwiched between two clean sheets was very dirty and appeared to not have been changed/washed for a long time. Requested maid service to change and the replacement duvet was a less dirty but dirty none the less. Also, the use of Spirit Airlines caused an additional $500 cost to secure assigned seats and pay for one carry-on and one checked bag per person for two people round trip. This to say the least, was not a pleasant surprise. The vacation booked denoted "all inclusive" which the travel package was not after all. I would hope Apple Vacations would choose an airline that includes assigned seats and coverage for one carry-on and ad one checked bag in the future. This would also go a long way in reflecting the true cost for the vacation package. I will defiantly look for alternative vacation options other than Apple Vacations the next time my wife and I travel.

I stayed at this resort for 6 nights/7 days along with 7 others, for my 30th birthday!!! I once again booked my travel with Jayne from Beach Bum Vacation. She is so helpful and patient!!! Jayne sent me multiple resorts to choose from in Montego Bay. I settled on Secrets for its popularity, pricing, and amenities. We arrived via Amstar bus which was included in our travel with Jayne, this is very convenient. Upon arrival to the resort, we had to wait 2.5 hours extra for our rooms to be ready. Check in is at 3pm, but the majority didn't get our rooms until about 520pm. I was the birthday girl and my room was ready at about 545pm. 4 of us checked in on Saturday, and we booked ocean front rooms with king sized beds. Only 2 of us received king sized beds, the other 2 had to settle for double beds because there were no more king beds available. We changed rooms 3 times because we felt our rooms were "ocean view." We thought ocean front meant first floor, walk out onto the beach......or at least our entire view was ONLY the ocean. Not the case....3 of us had full views of the ocean, but we could also clearly see the pool (we didn't want to see the pool). Someone else had a palm tree in full obstruction of her view of the ocean (room 3427), but she settled because at least she was able to have a king sized bed. Deandra at the front desk was so patient and helpful, she continued to assist us until we found rooms that we were happy with. I really wish the food was better. Oceana served their calamari rings COLD. They would have been really good if they served them fresh, but they legit serve them cold....I don't even think they were sitting underneath a heating lamp! The Jamaican restaurant was pretty good...I ate there twice and had the guava bbq chicken both times. I think the Italian restaurant was my favorite...the chicken parmesan and the risotto croquettes were really yummy. The hibachi grill was entertaining and it was tasty. However, we ordered sweet and sour chicken a la carte...again...the food was cold. Sweet and sour chicken is breaded and fried...so it should be served crunchy. But since they let the sauce sit on it for so long before serving us, the chicken was soggy and cold. I ate 3 pieces and was over it. The club at the resort was fun! I was really hoping I liked the music (anywhere else out of the country, resorts always play EDM music...I hate EDM music)....and I DID!!! Everything was hip hop and I could sing along to everything. We booked the Chukka Excursion as well as the Cool Runnings excursion on the resort. Both of these excursions were very fun. I appreciated the photographer on the resort grounds.....but the prices for prints are RIDICULOUS. I think one photo is $16!!!! No real package deals, I think the CD was maybe $200.....its just a rip off. They don't even have a resort border or emblem for the pictures....$16 for ONE!?!?! I only purchased one. One thing I can say....everything is on "Caribbean time" and we encountered what folks call "Caribbean attitude" from a few of the women employees. My mom had to tell the lady in the Photoshop about herself...she was rude as soon as we stepped in the door. She had an attitude, was hardly helpful, didn't smile....that contributed to us not wanting to purchase more photos. There were several times we asked for things in our rooms (floor mat, ice bucket, help with AC, etc)...my mom had to wait 2 days before she was assisted with her AC. For whatever reason, the electricity on the safe stopped working, and my cousin had no access to her passport or money for 2 days until they came to fix the machine. I brought metallic balloons in hopes that they could be filled with helium on the resort. The resort filled the balloons with oxygen, not realizing that helium is what makes balloons float hahaha. That was funny...frustrating....but funny. It all worked out in the end. Even though my balloons didn't float, I was able to hold them and pose for my photos lol. Also, shout out to Jayne for buying me a cake! I had a birthday dinner at Oceana restaurant, and my cake was delivered to the restaurant. The servers sang happy birthday and brought out my cake, it was so nice! FYI, ladies night at Margaritaville is on Thursday. I loved that a shuttle was provided to and from the resort multiple times through the night. Overall, there was a lot of great staff (Deandra, Sky, Errol, Richard at the Coco Café, Jeanelle at the Bar), the beach/ resort was clean and maintained well, WIFI worked well, and the stay was enjoyable. HOWEVER, I would not return to this resort. I'm positive there are better resorts in MoBay.

We had a great time at this hotel. The grounds were perfectly manicured and the rooms were very nice. This was by far the best food we had at an all inclusive. The best restaurants were Himitsu and El Patio- food was awesome. We weren't able to do the hibachi grill at Himitsu becaus you need to make a reservation for that and apparently 3 days isn't far enough in advance- but we did eat off the menu and it was great! They have a great coffee bar and a soft serve ice cream machine that we used every day. The showers had excellent water pressure with plenty of hot water, bed was comfortable, the AC was super cold and the room was very clean. First time at an adults only resort and that part was awesome! The whole staff was super friendly and helpful! We definitely recommend this hotel!

Weekend Trip to a Good resort
Fred M, Fort Myers, Florida

Secrets St. James was exactly what you would expect from an all inclusive resort. The rooms were your typical setup, they did seem a bit dated but everything was very clean and comfortable. The pools were nicely taken care of but word to the wise they are not heated so the water can be a bit chilly in the mornings. If you are going to stay spend the money to upgrade to the preferred club, it is worth the extra money to have a place to enjoy cocktails small plates of food and get access to the other resorts across the way. The food was your typical all inclusive style food, nothing really blew us away other than the Jerk Chicken served outside mid-day by the pool. Holy Moly!!! It was out of this world. The best part of the weekend stay in my opinion was the staff. Everyone that I met at the resort was extremely friendly and willing to help you out with anything you needed. We have traveled to a lot of islands and being from Florida we usually try and take a weekend trip to a Caribbean Island all-inclusive resort to unwind, this was a great selection for weekend stay.

It is a so called five star hotel. That is only in it's name. We checked in on Wednesday 15 November and our wc doesn't flush properly and get stuck frequently, I called reception as soon as I checked in and no one picked up the phone at 6pm. I have to go around to the front desk to get this sorted, which they eventually did and the next morning it won't flush again. After calling the front desk at 7am and 1pm requesting for it to be repaired again, I have to go to the front desk again and eventually it was sorted that afternoon. Also they say on their website that they replenish minibar twice a day, however we run out of water in our minibar and I have to request three times before they replenished our minibar with water. Despite this the room is nice and lots of activities going on and the yoga is good. Most of the staff is friendly. Love the location!
