Just returned from another delightful vacation at Secret Silversands Riviera Cancun. We could not recommend this destination enough for a relaxing vacation. In particular, Mercedes, Filipe and Meredith were incredible hosts/waiters making sure we were looked after throughout our stay. Thanks!! We look forward to another visit in the near future. More>

Great Property with allot to offer, but I cant give it 5 stars

First off, let me start by saying we had a wonderful time at Secrets Silversands. I read allot of the reviews here before we chose this place so I knew what I was gettng into with some of the complaints. So this is not an account of me complaining, because I had a great time. I just wanted to give a review of what I experienced. The hotel and the grounds are beautiful. They work very hard to keep the place looking great and it shows. The food is out of this world good. From the buffet, to the restaurants, to room service, to the VIP Lounge, BOOM...out of this world food. The waitstaff are very friendly and will go to no end to make sure you have a wonderful experience. There is ALLOT lost in translation though. Many many of the workers here cannot speak English. It gets frustrating after a week. The bartenders are nice guys. A few dollars tip goes a long way. They work hard and people who sit at the bars all day and don't tip would get annoying to me too. The staff that handles drinks on the beach and at the pool are Johnny on the Spot. But they quit serving exactly at five. No exceptions. People who complain about no enough liquor in the drinks might want to consult a doctor. There is plenty of liquor in the drinks. The drink of the day is always great. The pools are beautiful. The water is a little hot by the afternoon. The pools are very clean as well. But the pools close exactly at 8pm. No exceptions, get out of the pool. This is where I think the property is really lacking. I could understand "No yelling after 8", but having to get out is extreme especially when you pay as much as you do to go here. The staff at the activities desk is very rude. They don't want to be there that's for sure. But this is a separate company just set up on the property. The activities directors "Myra" and "Daveed" that work for the hotel are great. We took the morning bike ride into the town of Puerto Morales, totally worth it.I highly recommend it. Beach...and you need to consider this. The beach is not great. The complaints on here about the seaweed and rocks are true. The guys on the beach DO IN FACT work very hard to keep the seaweed off the beach. But when you see the property next door, there is no seaweed on their beach. Why? They hire a guy to plow it with a tractor at 6:30 am each morning. Secrets does not, and the seaweed IS BAD. So all accounts of this are very true. The rocks are horrible in the water too. There were hardly any rocks on other property beaches. So i'm not sure why Secrets doesn't clean theirs. All in all we had a GREAT time with family and friends. 8 of us total were there and they took very good care of us. The rocks and the seaweed were annoying yes, but it did not take away from our vacation. We probably wouldn't go back when there are other properties around there with clean beaches. Sorry for the long review, thanks for reading More>

An amazing resort - perfect relaxation!

First and foremost, I want to make it clear that this resort is just awesome. It is located in a secluded area of the Riviera Maya with not much around. If you are wanting to relax in a peaceful environment, you will get it here. Any criticisms I have are just nitpicking. I would absolutely stay here again. If you are wanting to be pampered, this is your resort. Room: I stayed in building six, second floor and had a view of one of the back pools. Very private and very quiet. The room was awesome and clean. The towels are big and fluffly. The bed was very comfortable. The bed pillows were great (and I am usually very picky about my pillows) and not the usual flat hotel fare. You can lose each other in the shower. We didn't try the double jacuzzi because the water came out yellow, but I don't think that is a resort issue and rather it is more of a Mexico water issue. The TV could have worked a bit better - many channels were snowy. The air conditioning was perfect despite the 32C outside every day. I think any complaints people may have about the A/C relate to a patio door issue. The patio door clearly states if you leave it open, the A/C will shut off. I saw many people with open doors. If there is a negative, you had to leave the patio door open if you were on the balcony because the door locks if you close it and there is no way to get back in! A towel bar on the balcony would have been nice to dry out wet attire, but that is just a minor detail. This building also borders on the loading docks, so you did hear the trucks and their reverse beeps. The lighting in the room could have been a little better around the bed so that you could read in bed if you wanted. We told them we were enjoying our second honeymoon - we found our room decorated on our second day - banner on the door, rose petals through the room, champagne on the table. A nice surprise. Pools: They are amazing. Clean. Salt water. Perfect temperature to refresh. The only downside is they allow people to smoke in the pool and some guests felt it appropriate to put their ashes in the pool. Big fluffy pool towels - no deposits - just take what you need when you need it. Poolside Bar service: A callout to Filipe who served the infinity pool - he is just awesome. He is prompt and remembers everybody's orders. You never have to leave the pool if Filipe is serving you! Chairs/Loungers: They are aplenty. No need to get up early - we usually got there around 10:30-11am and got a lounger in the shade (and hammocks for two too!). Lots of floating mats and floating chairs. My only complaint is that the staff does not enforce the "no reserving" rule. Many days there were chairs beside us where people dropped a towel or their belongings and they never returned the whole time we were there. Some people were looking for shade and couldn't use these loungers because they were "taken". Food: OMG! You will gain weight at the resort. The breakfast and lunch buffets are enormous and filled with anything you may want. Made to order omelettes for breakfast and made to order tacos for lunch were great. Freshly made smoothies at the smoothie bar. You have to try the "green juice" when you are there. While not visually appealing, it is absolutely tasty and refreshing. I highly recommend it! The dinner restaurants are to die for. The best part is that no reservation is ever needed (except for the "Japanese show" at the Japanese restaurant - but if you don't want the show then no reservation is needed). I will only comment on the ones we went to. Our favourite was the French restaurant (Bordeaux). The escargot was amazing. The duck was awesome. You have to try their flaming creme brulee. The Portofino had amazing italian fare. We didn't dine in the Mexican restaurant because they had a Mexican night, and moved it to an outdoor Mexican buffet. The selection and the food was great - with a variety of spice levels for those who want a little or those who want a lot. The Seaside grill was probably the only restaurant that was "meh". While eating outdoors was great, the food didn't amaze - it was good but definitely not the same calibre of the indoor restaurants. The dress code seems very sexist though. Essentially the women are allowed to wear anything. They can wear bathing suits under a bathing suit wrap to the buffets. They can wear "barely there" attire for the formal dining. However the men must wear shorts and a sleeved shirt for the buffets, and either dress shorts or pants with dress shoes and sleeved shirt for the dinners. They are strict on this and turned men away from the restaurant not meeting the criteria. It would nice to see them balance this by having a dress code for both, or easing up on the men's dress code. At least getting rid of the pant requirement. The restaurants are indoors and mildly air conditioned, so it wasn't too bad for the men. Games/activities: There are plenty to do and they are all adult oriented. Pool volleyball, texas hold'em, blackjack, and the like. The Crazy Game at 3pm is always very entertaining. Bingo at 4:30. Always lots of prizes ranging from t-shirts to gift bags to bottles of wine or tequila. Evening entertainment: The usual mix of the good and the bad. On our first night it was the Rock show, which was a rocking good time and lots of fun. They had a Cher show - but it was so bad by the time we left there was perhaps only 15 people left in the venue. The Urban show (hip hop and break dancing) was extremely entertaining. The Mexican show was good. They had a Couples Show which brought 3 couples up on stage to do a variety of tasks. Entertaining, but they couldn't do a lot in the hour allotted. Twice while we were here a market set itself up by the pool at night from about 6pm to 10pm. Perhaps about 20 vendors or so selling various Mexican wares. The prices are very high and you need to bargain - they know you are at an expensive secluded resort. I got a huge chess set for $50US - but they originally wanted $160US for it. They wanted $65US for a painted ceramic skull - I ultimately paid $15US for it. Movies: if the weather is good, they project recent movies up onto the side of the building. We watched American Sniper and Spectre. They have popcorn and a snack cart with chips and chocolate bars. My only complaint here is that the evening show starts before the movies end so you are forced to make a choice between the activities. Daytrips: This resort is in the middle of nowhere and essentially between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. You will need a taxi or other arranged transportation to leave. You are looking $50US one way for a taxi. We took a shopping day trip down to Playa Del Carmen which is free, but you are locked into a jewellery factory for 75 minutes and then 30 minutes at a glass factory before you are driven to the shopping for 2.5 hours. It was worthwhile and if you can bide your time at the forced visits, it beats the $100 US in taxi costs. Note: they will tempt you with getting "free gold customized Mayan pendants" from the jewellery factory. You will not get this - you will get a mousepad. Tipping: There is no need for tipping at the resort - it does not make any difference to how you are treated. We saw some people doing it but that is personal choice. With our wallets locked up in the safe, we decided to note who gave us excellent service while we were there and then on our last day we found those employees and gave them a big tip before leaving. In summary, this was an amazing resort. We were looking for quiet relaxation in a luxury environment and this is what we got. The service and friendliness was top notch. While we can nitpick the things that weren't perfect, ultimately it was our best vacation in Mexico. We would absolutely return. More>

We had a wonderful time at the Secrets Silversands . We were treated so well by everyone we encountered. Our room was clean and comfortable and there was a birthday banner on the door to commemorate my birthday. They brought fresh fruit, cake and champagne on my actual birthday. We celebrated our anniversary a few days later and they also brought special treats for that as well. This included rose petal and décor for the bed. Our friends travel with us each year to celebrate their anniversary as well. They were not disappointed by the treatment they received for their anniversary, either. It's tittle things that mean so much and make you feel special. Secrets know this. We loved the activity staff and they were always warm and engaging. Lots of fun games around the main pool and morning water biking and aerobics. The beach bar was quiet and great for a pre dinner cocktail. The beach is not spectacular but that is no fault of the resort. They keep it clean but it was not a hang out for us. They have a Gazebo that sits out over the water where they have daily yoga classes. The food in the restaurants was great and we enjoyed all of our meals. They have a great variety including French , Japanese, etc. The wait staff was always efficient and gracious. We would eat breakfast in the main restaurant each morning and even though I am not a huge fan of buffets there is something for everyone. They always offered bloody marys and mimosas. The service manager in the dining room was a precious young lady who was so sweet and always checked on us each morning and during lunch if we happened to eat there. I feel horrible for not remembering her name but she was stellar and a great example of what customer service is all about. You could see the admiration held for her by her team. The spa was wonderful. We had full body massages and afterwards had full use of the facilities. This included steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, cold plunge pool and relaxation beds. They also have a covered out door pool area that is so tranquil and relaxing. There were several different water features and cabana beds. The lobby bar was always fun and the bartenders are wonderful. They truly never have a minutes respite but yet they are attentive and entertaining. We loved the property and would go back in a heart beat. Again, Secrets has hit the mark. We have never had a bad experience at any of their properties and are true fans. We are heading to Secrets Akumal and Zoetry Bonita (a sister property) in a few weeks, Can't wait !! More>
