Best Anniversary Trip Ever!
Trisha C, Saint Louis, Missouri
Thu Oct 18 11:33:15 EDT 2018
When we first arrived my husband and I were greeted with Champagne and a cool towel that smelled like the spa. Smelled so good! We were preferred and were whisked away first thing. So nice. We arrived around 12:15 and our room was not yet ready, so we got a drink in the lounge and then went to eat. We ate lunch at Seaside grill (acting as Oceana because it was closed for renovations) and let me just say we had the fish tacos, holy crap they were to DIE FOR!! We asked what kind of fish it was and it was red snapper. They put a chipotle sauce on top and it was fantastic. So good we went back each day but 1 and had them for lunch! I also got the chicken fajitas there, also excellent. The only negative I can say is that our room took until 3pm to get ready so after we ate lunch we just kind of hung out and had some drinks. It was hot so we stayed close in the lounge. But technically check in isn't until 3pm, so all was well. Let me say that when we went up to our room, our bags were already there and the room, a Jr. Suite Ocean View was just beautiful! We were in room 2430 and I have to say it's probably the best view of the ocean and the pools. I wanted building 2 and we got it. We were 4th floor and could see for miles on the water. Just gorgeous. Couldn't have been happier with the room. Maid service and turn down service were awesome! Mini bar service was off the hook with our candy and liquor bottles too. We tipped them well. Very well. And each day and they were totally worth it. My husband and I got the complimentary Anniversary package. We had a special turn down service one night which was really cute and then had breakfast in bed with champagne, and we scheduled all of this in the Preferred club upon arrival and without a hitch, all went great. So awesome! Luis was great bringing us our food right on time and coming to get everything after we were finished eating. We tipped him well too. We went to El Patio the first night, not that great. We went to Bordeau and it was really good. We loved it. We walked over to Dreams one day and had the ice cream and ate at That's a Wrap for lunch. We had a panini and salad. Very good..both places. We also ate at the Brazillian restaurant and it was delicious. I'm not a huge meat eater but my husband is and he loved it. They have a salad and pasta/hot buffet as well and I ate mostly off of that and it was all delicious. The mash potatoes there were the best we've ever had. Crazy good. Again we tipped our waiters. We did the barefoot grill a couple times, the quesadilla was good, onion rings were really good too. I don't think we had many complaints. The Market Cafe was our go to for breakfast and it didn't disappoint. Very good. COCO Cafe was next door and we went there each night for coffee and they had this vanilla cake (they called it) that was so good! And I'm not even a dessert eater. The entertainment staff...Skinny Tom, Justin and especially Damian were GREAT! My husband and I won a movie song trivia in the pool one afternoon and got a really beautiful painting on a piece of tile that the artist did with his finger. Ahhhhhhmmmmmazing! It's in our dining room for everyone to see! They had a Mexican fiesta one night too that they decorated for and a full buffet. Dancers, a mariachi band and everything. Fun night. We did Hibachi table side and the guy was great! Food was very good too! Would recommend for sure. The beach was pristine. Every morning we'd watch the sun rise and see the workers combing the beach and workers scrubbing the pool deck. Even chopping down dead palm leaves and cutting bushes. I mean the place is immaculate. Breathtaking. We even walked on the beach over to where the dolphins swim and saw them too. We swam in the ocean a few times. Got a bali bed for a morning and did the pool each day. We had no problem finding a place to put our things. The pool was great! If you want a good drink, drink a Painkiller and have a cherry bomb shot. The BEST! We don't have anything bad to say about the resort. It was one of the best trips we have ever taken. We would go back in a heartbeat. We stayed 5 nights and 6 days and could of stayed even longer. Even thought about it too. Adults only is the way to go. This was our first time doing so and it was perfect. Highly recommend staying! We stayed 10-11 - 10-16

Amazing beach and great resort.

We opted again for a preferred room, staying in the preferred junior suite ocean view. We like the preferred rooms because we have a private check-in, 24 hour early check out, exclusive preferred lounge with food and premium drinks, and preferred breakfast (which is optional at Oceana). The room was large and had an incredible views of the beach and ocean. There was also a Jacuzzi tub on the balcony. This is probably the first resort we have stayed at that had great a variety of English speaking cable and movie channels. This was nice in the evening after a long day in the sun. In regards to housekeeping services, we had to call once because our room was not cleaned. They immediately sent someone to the room and this was done. Restocking of the fridge was not done daily, which was fine for us because we didn't drink the alcohol. They do not have do not disturb signs for the door, instead, there is a button by the bed you can push which is a nice option. We had access to the Dreams resort which was a short walk from Secrets. Dreams is a family resort with multiple pools, lazy river, and water slides and Secrets is adult only. They have some incredible pools with amazing views. Both resorts had great pool service. Thank you to Alejandro at Dreams for taking great care of us. The Secrets also had a variety of pools and hot tubs. Another perk of being a preferred guest, on the beach is covered cabanas that guests can utilize. Jarlin worked on the beach and got us more towels and set up our cabana checking on us as the day progressed. He also recognized us when we returned a few days later. Benito was wonderful and kept the drinks coming. The beach was beautiful and the water was perfect. A short walk down the beach you can find people who offer jet skis, banana boat rides, and another water adventures for an additional fee. Every morning, the beach was cleaned of seaweed. This was done at least twice a day. Also,I am not sure if it was nature or the dolphin sanctuary (you can participate in programs at this sanctuary for an additional fee) at Dreams, but there was a strong rotten egg odor which made me run for the shore our last day. There was always an odd smelling aroma, but on this day, it was offensive enough to make me exit the water. Food options are plentiful between both resorts. We went to Dreams for Brazilian steakhouse. Concept is like what we have in the states, but the meat was chewy and not easy to cut. They had pork ribs that were seasoned, but dry. The best part of the meat options were turkey and chicken, which is something I never get when going to this type of dining option. However, it was the best cuts of meat of the night. Service was not great here. The server seemed so busy and distracted. I am not sure how many tables he had, but he seemed a bit rushed. One of the men, Daniel who was serving the meat went above and beyond for us, clearing our table and coming around often to check on us which was more than our server did. The other thing is that I am unsure how they make rounds in the room, but often walked by us. Market cafe is where we went for breakfast daily. Anabelly always had a smile on her face when we saw her and seated us quickly. Loved the green juice and had great server Orlando who took great care of us. There is a omelette station that always had a long line. It would be nice if there were two people making the omelette versus just one. There is a great variety of standard eggs and bacon to tamales. They had a great salsa station that we couldn't get enough of. Barefoot grill on the one day we went, the fryer was broken. We got a cheeseburger which was good, and given cold, limp fries. I'm not sure where the fries came from, but I would have rather skipped that all in all. We also go the nachos with pastor meat. I have never had pastor meat like this before; dried pieces of pork on chips with nacho cheese and jalapenos. The second time we went there, we went we ordered the crab rolls. I didn't want to sit at a table because I just came out of the pool, but staff insisted that we sit and that we could not take food from table. It was told that everything else could go back to the pool except the crab rolls. The crab rolls were imitation crab egg roll. I'm not sure what I thought it was going to be, but not an egg roll. Oceana had great ceviche (3) at lunch, but not at dinner so make sure you try this place for lunch. Dinner we had amazing fish dishes, mahi mahi and grouper. It's a must have! Our server Felix was on point and did not disappoint. We also ate at El Patio for dinner our last evening. I had the pork with peanut sauce which was great. Poblano soup was so creamy and delicious. We also had octopus ceviche and it was excellent. Clemente did a great job and we appreciated his service. The Steakhouse for dinner had a great tuna steak that was cooked perfectly that my husband had. I had the new york strip, which looked like the ribeye. It was fatty, and difficult to cut. It was stringy, chewy, and just not that appetizing. Coming from Chicagoland area, we have options for great steak options such as Morton's or Ruth's Chris. Honestly, I've had a better sirloin at Outback! VIP unlimited club. Please do your research and be warned. We did not do this, but we were approached while we were waiting for our transportation at the airport and then heard it again and again from preferred staff and VIP services. It is presented as 1.5 hour meeting, but we have heard it goes longer. In essence it's like joining a timeshare, but again, do your research before you provide any personal information. Offers of massages and a 3 day stay on your next visit is given, but again, do your research, keep all of your personal information covered. We also liked the coco cafe where Frankie make us great frozen iced coffees. Desserts at the resort were not appetizing. I had gotten some cookies and the cafe and had leche cake at El Patio which was hugely disappointing. Entertainment was ok. We had great music duo at Rendezvous, a fire show, and harp player at Market Cafe in the morning that we enjoyed. We did not participate in movies or comedy shows in the theater. The theater, club, and movie areas require a golf cart ride to the main lobby. Piano in piano bar sounded off key, but the piano player was great. As I always do, tip the staff. For example we watched this couple eat platefuls of meat at the the Brazilian steakhouse, leaving a full plate of pork bones on their table. They left not even once cent for service staff. It is absolutely disgraceful to dine and not leave some kind of tip for the staff that try their best to cater to your needs. Even if we didn't have the best dining experience, we would still leave a tip. I understand that this is all inclusive, but if you are going to spend this kind of money staying at this kind of resort, you should be able and willing to tip the staff from dining to housekeeping for their dedicated services. Overall, we had a nice time and enjoyed ourselves. We would definitely go back and recommend Secrets Playa Mujeres!!

As a Travel Professional that has stayed in 40+ all inclusive resorts I can confidently say this one is in my top 5. I had an Ocean View Preferred Club. The Preferred Club breakfast was fantastic! The private beach area cabanas are the best & the service on the beach was top notch. Food was amazing. Great steaks, full access to the Dreams next door for more food! No seaweed, big plus for Riv Cancun area right now. Want your next Vacation to be the best! Call me 269-657-5529.
