First time at a Secrets Resort

The transfers from airport to resort were fine, took about 40 minutes. We were offered a glass of champagne each on arrival which was a nice touch. Our room was nice, huge king size bed. Jacuzzi on the balcony and also one in the bathroom. The whole room was very clean and I’d say the resort in general was well kept. The beach is lovely, we had a cabana for several days. The pools were quite nice but none of them large enough to do any serious swimming. We found the food to be incredibly bland, which was so disappointing. We tried several of the restaurants and didn’t really enjoy any of them. Oceana was our favorite. The service in the restaurants was so slow! We were looking for leisurely dining but this was way too leisurely. I did get very sick for about 6 hours, will never know why, my husband was fine. The cocktails were seriously watered down! We went as Preferred guests and had the use of a lounge which had ample amounts of spirits and wine which we could pour ourselves. I was really upset to see dolphins in captivity just along the beach at the Dreams resort. I realize this won’t affect everyone as it did me, but to see these beautiful creatures literally yards from the ocean being kept in a pool was horrifying. It didn’t help that we could see the pool from our balcony! Overall it was a decent taster of an all inclusive but I think there are many other resorts that perhaps offer better value.

5th trip to this resort - did not disappoint!

This is one of our favorite Secrets resorts - the staff and service are fantastic, food is good, very nice beach, etc. I’ll start by saying that we are members of the AMResorts travel club (UVC) - and we booked a Master Suite Oceanfront with Plunge Pool for our first 5 nights, and then used some of our premiere nights to end the trip which should’ve put us in a Preferred Jr Suite Oceanview which they upgraded to Master Oceanview - one of the only hiccups of our trip was that they did not advise us of this until the day we had to move (they can frequently keep you in the same room) and with my husband off fishing, it was a bit of a scramble to get everything together so they could move us. That being said, actually enjoyed the 2nd room just as much and the views were amazing. Aside from that - our check in and check out went smoothly. FOOD: it really comes down to what you order - after an experience years ago, we tend to avoid salad and lettuce of any kind - and the food was very good. The Ossobucco from Portofino and ribeye at seaside grill were exceptional. Enjoyed our dinner in the wine cellar tremendously - just make sure you are very clear with them on the cost prior. Breakfast one morning in the buffet - the omelette chef is amazing - the rest of the time did room service which was fine but nothing exceptional. Oceana does breakfast for preferred only which we also did one day and it was good. EXCURSIONS: Did a day trip to Isla Mujeres right from the beach at the resort, where we rented golf carts and toured the island, and the guys went fishing for a 1/2 day - picked up again, right at the beach - and caught 4 barracuda which one of the chefs made into a fabulous ceviche. ROOM: very clean, plunge pool was heated - very nice to come back to at the end of a day in the main pool. Our friends had swim-up which was definitely not heated and chilly. We ordered extra orthopedic pillows off the pillow menu which were brought to us immediately. ENTERTAINMENT: did a fantastic NYE party at the pool with fireworks, dancing, live music; Fire Show by the pool another night was really good. Missed not having a rock show this year - were told that should be back in the next couple of months. Lots of fun activities by the pool during the day. Sexy Ross came up and introduced himself our first day there and was so much fun throughout our stay! SERVICE: outstanding. Fernando and the wait staff at Portofino; Martin, Carlos, and Isaiah at the pool bar; Blanca, Levi, and Delvetrio - pool servers. We are already looking forward to our trip back in the fall!

This hotel was one of the best resorts I have stayed at. The rooms are clean, the resort seems fairly brand new and the staff is great. You have to take a golf cart from your room to the lobby or to visit any restaurant and that just gives you an idea of how massive the resort really is. The best part about our trip was the pool concierge! We had Jose take care of us all last week. He ensured that we always had spot at the pool, drinks coming our way and even an extra float to bring in. He made our stay pleasant and accommodated every single request. A small tip goes a long way!

This is a Secrets?! Beware!

We are Secrets fans and have stayed at many over the years. This place has been open for four years so I expected it to be up to Secrets standards, but it was more a low end all inclusive comparable to a Riu. This is my first bad review of a resort on TA. The worst is we still have upset stomachs and we’ve been home for 3 days! If you read nothing more, beware of what you eat. Here are our pros and cons: 1. We reserved a king bed swim out, but they didn’t have a king bed. Even when I requested and showed my confirmation they said sorry, only double beds. Annoying, but I’d expect the inventory to be correct in their system. Also, I was told the swim outs were heated in December and January, but no they were so cold that no one used them and they were so ridiculously tiny anyways that I’d never book one here even warm times of year. Please see uploaded picture. We’ve had warm swim outs at other secrets in winter. Whatever, I got over the bad room situation and us having to sleep in separate beds. 2. I wanted to bring my bag to the room, but they said no it’ll be brought just behind you. Well hours later it still wasn’t brought so then I had to play the whole please bring our bags game and wait. 3. Well since our swim out room was so cold I wanted to take a nice relaxing bath. The water that filled the tub was yellow and stunk! I took a picture, please see for yourself. It was gross! So yeah didn’t get to use the bath and the shower water was lukewarm and smelled. We kept our mouths closed and also brushed teeth with bottled water. A lot of good that did as we got sick anyway. 4. The guy at checkin who couldn’t give us king beds even after I showed him the printout of my reservation, also says we only get 3 devices for WiFi. Well that’s new to us, especially when the brochure they hand you says unlimited connectivity. Annoying since we each have a smart phone and iPad. 5. The hypnotist show was the exact same guy and exact same show we saw before at a different Secrets last year. I mean down to the exact same words and everything he uses in the show, no difference! Almost to the point where he is bored himself. Seeing they have so many return guests at all their resorts they should switch the shows up some. 6. The breakfast buffet was the worst I’ve seen from any Secrets or any resort buffet. I mean wow. We even just ordered room service to not go there again but then it was just as bad. I so desperately wanted chilaquiles but this place doesn’t seem to know how to make them. The ones from buffet and room service were so bad. 7. Worst pillows ever. They’re worst than the ones my grandmother has had on her guest bed for 20+ years. Never in all my hotel travels have we had such terrible pillows. And it was so hot we couldn’t sleep. It wouldn’t adjust lower than 69, but the temp was more like 78 in the room. 8. No liquor in room. I mean wow, not the ones on the wall or the small bottles. We paid a fortune to stay the first week in January and they didn’t even offer those in minibar. 9. Not resorts fault, but the craziest entertainment was the guests at the beach fighting and about to throw punches even after security was there trying to break it up. So many interesting people drunk in the pool and beach fighting that I thought I was definitely at some low end Cancun party resort. 10. An employee asked me if I could make change for USD $50 when we checked out and were leaving. It looked counterfeit. So bizarre an employee would ask a guest to make change and right when they’re leaving the resort too! Of course I said no. 11. We’ve been home for almost 4 days and we still have major upset stomachs. This is a first for a Mexican resort. It’s been terrible how many times a day we have to run to the restroom, but I’m just thankful it started right when we got home. 12. Major lack of public restrooms around resort. The ones by the Mexican restaurant were locked most of the time and there’s only one other tiny one by the pool that’s wet and dirty. Pros: 1. The champagne is good. Tastes great! 2. Oceana has a nice feel for lunch. 3. Entertainment team try at the pool and Ross is very friendly. 4. The bathrooms are more private in the room than other resort 5. Can use Dreams facilities. They have great Coconut ice cream. There were so many kids with it being a holiday week that we didn’t stick around there, but if a different time of year then they have much nicer pools than Secrets. Anyway, we will not return as there are too many great resorts and competition to return to this one that is more like a low end all inclusive and we got sick. We’ve been in every bit of Riviera Maya and this was our first bad experience.

EXACTLY what you would hope for and expect for the money spent at an all inclusive..

My wife and i just returned and had a great holiday.. don't be worried about any of the negative Nelly reviews..some people are never happy, maybe just grumps or just have bad luck..don't hesitate to go to Secrets.. Adults Only is so nice,, no kids anywhere... 35 min from airport and you're in heaven..the beach and golf is exceptional in Playa Mujeres...Now, no resort is perfect all the time and we've been to plenty of all in's all over, and know the standards..Yes, sometimes people do have bad experiences, sh't happens, but, that said, when you're ONLY paying $2-3k pp for 7 nights including airfare, all you can eat from a variety of restaurants, decent Chilean house wine, and premium drinks.. you're doing ok..yer not in Monaco folks... Great happy staff everywhere, ready to assist, for every gracias I out of my mouth, I heard "It's My pleasure" in return..do yourself and the local community a favor.. TIP...$1 usd for a round of drinks,$5 for a nice dinner for two, give the hostess a buck, the shuttle guys, maids etc it feels good, and I'm pretty sure it makes a difference in these peoples lives..its so easy..you get what you give, don't walk around entitled..be happy, grateful that you can actually afford a holiday and experience the wonderful golf, beach and culture.. the food is not Michelin star, its fine, served in a variety of restaurants and you'll feel full all the time..rib steak at poolside grill was really good,, Daniel on the Beach, Tomas in Oceania, Hostess Salma.. et all the staff were awesome, I was impressed with the efforts made to provide additional special options in food and parties for New Years eve,(great pool Party and fireworks) football games, golden globes etc.. I do suggest premium club as very worthwhile upgrade, lounge was nice to have access to..ocean view, 3rd floor, building 2.. access to Oceania for breakfast and lunch was very nice,, as for the beach beds..if you want one, go early, 7.30-8 am, smile, be friendly, have 3-5 usd in you hand and you will be set..I really don't mind paying a little for the comfort... drop your beach bag, head to breakfast and come back for a great day on the beach..massages on the beach was superb, I wont go on, and I hope the grumps or entitled don't hate me for this review.. maybe I'm the entitled one for tipping for what I want?? anywho,.., go, have fun, and treat people the way you would like to be treated and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results..
