Well, was expecting great things from our first Secrets visit. We usually travel twice a year, and was looking forward to another fantastic vacation. Based on reviews figured we couldnt go wrong at any Secrets resort. Guess you could say were a little spoiled from treatment at other resorts, but hey that's what we pay for right? Excellence being one of the most incredible resorts we've ever experienced, expected Secrets to place right there at the top. Boy were we wrong. The resort is nice, but doesn't compare to others we've visited. Smaller than I thought, which isn't a big deal. However upon arriving I was expecting a much grander entrance/lobby compared to Royal Playa, Excellence Cancun, and nameless others. Right off the bat I was a little dissapointed, but hey its still not a deal breaker. Upon entering you'll notice they are doing a ton of work at their sister resorts, with all the noise you could ask for. After a quick cart drive from the main lobby to the suites and pool area, we were dropped off at yet another shielded wall at the entrance where they were doing more work....yaaaaa. We had a swimout suite, the cheapest option and now I know why. The room was nice, but could definitely use some updating fixing cracked walls, caulking, and some mold removal. Horrible water pressure. Tried the room Jacuzzi which shot out brown gunk everywhere. Nice...a call to front office yielded no help. Great. The mini bar? No alcohol at all. Wait what??? The "swimout" was an end unit, with absolutely no view of anything but a 10 foot garden wall. It was actually slightly chilly the first few mornings, and our suite being blocked by everything was also very shaded which attributed to the lack of sun. They call it a swimout, its a very small 6x6 area with a small bridge that was falling apart and slanted. Meh, again not a deal breaker since we only sleep as little as possible anyway ;) First day pool was chilly, mind you I scream like a little girl at water below 85, but when my wife says its chilly, its chilly. Luckily next day they must of turned the heater on because it jumped 20 degrees which was much better. Bartenders were great to us, had our drinks waiting the minute they saw us walking toward the pool. Mind you, we are good tippers, so apparently that wasn't everyones experience. Unfortunately we smoke, but there wasn't a single ashtray to be found. We asked several times for one all week, and we started using empty drink cups, but got scolded by management for doing so, who continually walked up and took our "ashtray". I guess the ground is a better option, still don't understand that one. Daytime entertainment was non existent, with a few small same routine everyday, which basically consisted of a few of flamboyant staff shaking their behinds. Not my thing, sorry. Our last day they did have a reggae band play which was awesome. It instantly drew a crowd to the pool, something they hadn't had all week. They had a mechanical bull for 30 minutes one day which was entertaining to watch. However, there was NO music playing all week, which sucked as we are poolside all day. Once we brought out our bluetooth speaker on day 4, it instantly brought another 20 people to the pool bar area. Hey Secrets, here's a tip-PLAY MUSIC. And now the top shelf alcohol....ummm it may be in a top shelf bottle, but it definitely wasn't top shelf. Crown royal tasted like gasoline, and grey goose we requested was more like Pinnacle whipped cream vodka. That pissed me off...we're drinkers soooooo. Left my phone and a pink bluetooth speaker on the pool bar one afternoon after a few too many cocktails. Realized it about 2 hours later and went back. Called management and they said they had no record of it at lost and found. Greaaat. They took my name and room number and said they would call if it was found. Next morning, still hadnt heard anything. Called again, still no luck. Saw the bartender who was working the day I lost it, and he told me management took it. Wait what??? Took a golf cart and went to main office to find out what the hell was going on. After 20 minutes of "we don't know", finally was told they in fact did have it but it was water damaged. Ummm, its waterproof. Another 15 minutes passed and a manager brought me my phone and speaker. He asked me to unlock it and I laughed, it clearly has my name signature on the front screen which I set up in case this ever happened. Why wasnt I called that you had my phone? Crickets....starting to get a real bad feeling about this place. Anywho, food was great every place we went. Only option for breakfast however was the buffet. Oceana reserved breakfast only for preferred club members. We usually eat breakfast out in the open by the water at most resorts we've been to, unfortunately no such option. Breakfast was limited with options compared to most places we've been. Wait staff were friendly. Room service wasn't bad, but if you ordered wine it came in a glass covered with saran wrap (classy). Had to pay if you wanted a bottle. Tried to get a hotdog to go at their small Barefoot grill, as we were meeting friends and running late. We got a bit of attitude and were told that the food is not to go, that we needed to be seated. Say what???? We were told hotdogs would take awhile and to try a cheeseburger instead. Say what??? My blood was boiling at this point. We sat down, waited 10 mins for a cheeseburger, grabbed 2 napkins and took off the second we got our food. Got a dirty look from the server as we rushed out. Don't understand that nonsense at all. They had a few Jacuzzis which we tried, only 1 was warm. Tried to get them to turn it on at night, as they shut them down when the pool closed. No dice...As far as nightlife, not much. Sports bar was it. Now the finale...I understand a good bit of Spanish, but there was an extremely strong language barrier even for me. Now I know, this is Mexico, but....The morning we were set to leave, our bags were packed, outside the door ready to go. Normally at EVERY other resort Ive been to, they call the morning of, leave a flyer at the door about checkout, automatically send a bellhop up, etc. Apparently I didnt understand the instructions we were given about checkout, and apparently my wife didn't either (that's a first). We were told at 9:45 am to be ready for checkout, and the bellhop would escort us and our bags to the main lobby to our prepaid transportation. Well, 945 came and went. I called at 950 and was told our bus already left. Wait what???? No one called, no one came to get our bags, nothing. Bellhop showed up 15 minutes later, and a furious me wanted an explanation. Well, we got one. "Driver waited 10 minutes but left". Why didn't you call the room? Wouldnt that be protocol? "We can call you a cab". Sooo, the transportation we paid for was gone, and now we had to pay for a cab. How much? "$40" he said. Out of options, a plane to catch, no choice. They seemed to care less that we missed our bus, and had no explanation as to why they didn't call the room while the bus was waiting. Oh, and the $40 cab ride? I guess prices went up on the ride to the airport. However we met awesome people, and had a good time despite the lackluster effort of management staff. There is a lot to fix at this resort IMO. Never Secrets, never again. Forget this place and go to Excellence....that's a real 5 star resort worth your hard earned money. Still don't understand how a place this well reviewed could be so pathetic about communication.

Lots to do /or you can relax

We were there in February and really enjoyed it. Weather great overall beach excellent. All the staff very good food pretty good. You can play golf excellent course or relax at pools & beach. Shows are good at night and you can go back & forth between Dreams & Secrets. Guests from Secrets can go to Dreams so there is a lot to choose from for dinning. We are planning our next visit we liked it so much. You can take the ferry and go to Isla Mujeres for the day excellent we had a fun day. Take or wear your bathing suit beautiful beaches. The Dolphin experience at Dreams is great. Over all one of our best vacations. Thanks to Karina in preferred for all of her help. Raul in Oceania great love the breakfast there also. Girls at pool so nice serving drinks. If Rock of Ages is still there very good.

Not what I expected

This hotel must be privately owned because it is definitely not as good as the other Secrets. The room we had was very nice but the service and the food was not good. At every restaurant that we went to, the food was terrible and they were taking forever to bring the food out. We didn’t understand why because they weren’t that busy anyway. We upgraded to preferred club but I didn’t see any difference with the regular guests. We went to have breakfast at the restaurant that only preferred club members can go and the food was bad. We ended up going to the cafe that everyone can go. With preferred club you also get separate check in from other people which is nothing special so it’s not worth paying extra for it.

Be kind to the staff and they will make you feel like a king.

1. Oscar made our group feel special. He told us when to arrive at his restaurant station, so we could have the best experience. During the entire meal, he made sure everyone was well taken care of. All of the staff, in every department, treated everyone with great respect. 2. The catamaran is great fun. Share with someone, so you can sail a full hour. 3. The restaurants, food, beach facilities and bars are excellent. You can even order a room service hamburger anytime! 4. Use the room safe.

My wife and I took a 5 night trip to Secrets. We paid for a Jr. Suite Premium Ocean view. Our room was a poor excuse of a garden at best. Wife called front desk was told that is what a Jr. Suite is?? After getting ahold of our Travel Agent, who was livid we were put in a different room the next day. I would NEVER ever stay there again.
