Nice but new year a farce!

This hotel is nice. The beach is lovely. The staff are friendly and cant do rnough for you (apart from manager of French restaurant see later!) and the food is great! Love the guacamole especially. Nice to not carry money around for a week. Only time got money out was when going into playa del carmen and at start and end of hols for bags / concierge / cleaners etc. Taxis are safe. See attached pic for rates. Activities ok. Lots to do and the beach is amazing. Liked aqua aerobics every day. Bad points : they tried to make us pay over $200 dollars for new years eve! And even though we had the option of going to one of the normal restaurants we had to queue up and book at the pool (wasted holiday time). Plus there was confusion over menus and it was just hassle. We got told one menu at the pool, then when we got to restaurant the menu was different! Didn't appreciate manager of French restaurant trying to tell me I was wrong :-( Also they said at checkin the Asian restaurant was the only one you have to book. But that's only if you want some dinner show with dudes throwing knives around on a teppanyaki grill! You can go and eat there a la carte like all other restaurants and not book! Actually there is more variety if you do it that way. Overall, it was nice enough but there are so many hotels to try in that part of the world I probably wouldn't return for a while. More>

I can't say enough nice things about this resort. The staff was simply amazing. They all were so friendly and accommodating. They all went out of their way to be sure we were completely happy with every aspect of our vacation. It felt like home actually after just a day or two. The food was AMAZING! The entertainment was FANTASTIC! The grounds were immaculately clean and gorgeous. The beach was perfection! LOVED LOVED LOVED this place!!!!!!! More>

Amazing honeymoon!

My wife and I booked to stay here for our honeymoond after we got married the week before. We stayed here in October 2014 (Trip Advisor won't let me go back that far for some reason) and we were really impressed with the place. The year before, we stayed at a Secrets resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and we absolutley loved it, so we knew we wanted to look for another Secrets destination for our honeymoon. The stay here was amazing, almost perfect in fact. It is located about 30 minutes from the airport and you are taken by a private mini-bus on run by the hotel itself. The hotel itself is located right on the beach and when you are being driven to the place, it looks like you are heading into the middle of a mangrove swamp until the hotel suddenly appears. On arrival, we were checked in relatively quickly. However, the one real bug-bear for us was that after a long 12+ hour journey, we were pestered by the hotel staff to buy into their "holiday club", when all we wanted to do was get in our room, have a shower and then relax. This is done in bad taste in our opinion as they know that you are tired and will more than likely say yes to shut them up (which we did, but then cancelled when the called to confirm the next day). After that, things were much better. Our room was amazing - well decorated, exceptionally clean and in a nice quiet location. It was a short walk to the pool and were located on the top floor too, so had a good view (albeit not of the pool unfortunately), but this was fine for us. As we had stayed at a Secrets resort the year before, we knew how things worked when it came to service. The staff we exceptionally good at what they did, and were so friendly - everybody said hello when you walked by, no matter what time or how busy they were. The hotel grounds were kept amazingly well - staff always doing something to keep it clean, tidy and maintained. The pools were amazing too - there was a cooler, less used pool nearer the beach (nice for a good cool swim), but the "main" pool had the swim up bar and daily activities. The poolside staff were brilliant too - one young lad had a nice sense of humour and banter (taking the mickey out of our pasty tans), but always quick to offer their services when getting towels and an umbrella for shade. Even when the bar opened and the waiting staff came around, they were fantastic! Friendly, quick and dealt with some of the more rowdy people very well as the day grew longer. It made for an enjoyable pool-side atmosphere! The food was also very good! As it is not the "all you can eat type buffet" food, you do need to book at your chosen restaurant. This is not a big deal, as even if you do have to wait, it is usually pretty short (30 mins was the longest we waited if memory serves correctly) and you are given with a beeper that alerts you when you're table is ready. As we stayed for a fortnight (something that still amazes many people in the Americas - don't forget us Brits get 4 weeks holiday every year as a minimum), we did eat at all restaurants more than once, but we knew this and the menus are varied enough that you could try something new. The one thing that let this place down (for us) was the evening entertainment activities - not those that the hotel put on, but more the bars available. The lobby bar had a bit of an odd atmosphere - people would usually drink here before eating - but it became eerily quiet pretty quickly. My wife and I would usually pay a visit to the "sports bar" nearer the pool and with the rope swing bar seats, but this was also a bit odd too. These were dominated by large groups, often of drunken women swearing openly and being a bit brash, but it resembled a community centre to us with the bright lights, books and bar games, but then I guess it's because of the difference between the US and the UK. Having stayed at the Secrets resort in Jamaica the previous year, we did miss the open air piano bar that they had - this made for a nicer atmosphere, but also more up-beat than just some mediocre musician playing a set in an awkward stance. The evenings really became quite quite quickly because of the lack of bar areas, so we tended to take drinks back to our room and sit on the balcony instead. The only other downside is that staying at a place like Secrets means that most couples are there on an anniversary, honeymoon or special occasion. This means that everybody is in the same boat,. so free upgrades are not common place. We didn't even get a free upgrade on our flights, but that is nothing to do with the hotel. I guess we had expected to get a few complimentary upgrades given that it was our honeymoon! One thing we were disappointed with was the private beach dining experience. Having saw how fantastic this was in Jamaica, we had planned on booking a special dinner whilst we were here. However, unlike Secrets in Montego Bay where the private dining areas were set in tranquil locations, here they were placed side by side in tented rooms - which was a little odd, particulalry as many people would be walking by enjoying a stroll on the beach at night. So much so, that we didn't go ahead with this which was a shame. The beach itself was also pristine. Staff even picked up the flotsam and jetsam (sea weed etc) that washed up on the beach if it was particularly windy from time to time. Unreal really, and fantastic attention to detail. We would certainly go here again, and my wife and I really like the Secrets brand. Just a shame that the evening options were limited (if you didn't fancy an on-site "nightclub"). More>

We had such a wonderful time at Secrets Maroma and cannot wait to return. I could easily say this was the best experience I've had at an all-inclusive resort. The rooms are fabulous - lots of space and very well laid out. Food was excellent (which is not always the case at an all-inclusive). Liquor was top shelf (and it really was!). No reservations were needed for any of the restaurants except one - this allowed for a more relaxed vacation because there was no where you had to be. And then there's the staff... ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH with no exception. Beach is beautiful. Go for VIP/Preferred club if you can - it is well worth the extra money!! More>
