My wife and I spent our spring break at Secrets. We wanted to stay away from the better known places like Cancun. We wanted to relax, and have a quiet time on vacation. Secrets hotel was everything that I saw and read on previous reviews. The grounds were colorful, and very well kept. The pools were huge, the poolside drink service was good. There were instances where it was slow, but that was because of all the guests. The rooms were nice, I do wished the HVAC system worked better. It kept our room cool, but I wished it would keep it cooler. The hotel staff was very nice, extremely helpful, and accommodating to every need. The entertainment crew were super fun! They were always excited to see you, they greeted my wife and I, once they saw us enough times. Vladimir, and Dulce were especially fun. The concierge was always there for us. The tours personnel were very good at getting us to our tours. Everyone always asked us how were, said good morning, good afternoon, or good evening to us. We were always asked if we needed anything. I also do wish the food at the hotel was of better quality. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't blow your socks off good. Overall, my wife and I had a great time, it was extremely enjoyable, and we plan on coming back to Secrets, Huatulco.

Stayed at this resort Feb. 24-March 4. We've stayed at other Secrets Resorts and have always found them to be The Gold Standard by which other resorts are measured by. We read the reviews about this facility, especially it's laid back style but we found it too laid back for us, there just wasn't allot to do here. The pool/beach areas are the main attraction here and both have their drawbacks. The pool system is a series of 3 cascading pools with the largest one located at the bottom and served as the main area. We found it murky or cloudy most of the week we were there. The two upper pools are commandeered by the preferred crowds and you could never find a seat there(were told by one couple that they got up at 4am each day to "reserve them" which you aren't allowed to do. The beach area was nice, although somewhat congested as you are literally arm to arm with the next chair due to the limited amount of chairs and covered shelters. The bar service was good at both areas and while they appreciated the tips we gave, it did not appear to affect the service and they served everyone just as fairly whether they tipped or not. Our room was nice but again, we experienced a couple of problems that we wouldn't expect from a Secrets brand facility namely no coffee pot, glasses or coffee, nothing. We called the day after we arrived and it finally came on the third day. The most distressing problem was a safe that needed to be reset everytime we used it. We called and reported it and Securit came, reset it and showed us how to reset the code to access it. I was shocked to see how easy it is to reset and open the unit and worried all week if someone could do the same and access our belongings(no one did thank goodness!). We ate at the Italian, French, Steakhouse and unfortunately at Spice and I got sick the next day and that basically killed my week. I suspect it was from something I ate there which I found to be more like Thai than Chinese. They do theme nights in the center court but found the food to be overly cooked or dried out as to be expected when cooking that volume of food and letting it sit out as long as they do. The biggest disappointment is the evening entertainment, there really isn't much! The main hallway turns into the evening bar with a musician or singer performing with limited seating or sight lines. They show a movie on the side of the building in this area also and it seems odd sitting outside watching a movie on the building. We went to a couple of shows at the theater but found them to be mostly in Spanish and we just couldn't enjoy or follow along with. The buffet was nice and had a good selection every day, The staff is top notch and very polite and go out of their way to help you, I don;t think we had one bad experience except the front desk when we checked out and told them of the problems we had with our room and she appeared to careless. The final kicker was running into a skunk that was running down the sidewalk outside our room on our last night and that seemed to sum up our week. The place is nice, very laid back with minimal activities especially at night. The "Sports Bar" consisted of a bar with 2 tv's, sometimes playing the same game. We visited the Smoothie shop everyday for a snack and check for mail on the free internet terminals. The employee on afternoons(I forgot her name!!), was incredibly nice and one of the best employees we encountered! We took a cab into town (Crucita) which cost $5, very reasonable. It was very safe but very limited in their ability to converse with you in english. There are 3 stores onsite, a general store, an overpriced silver shop and a souvenir stand that was very pricey(cheaper to go into town or from the beach vendors). Overall, the facility is nice, clean, but too laid back with minimal things to keep you entertained, especially at night. I'd hate to see what happens when it does rain as you would have no where to hide. Every room offers a view of the ocean but we were in the first row of rooms, bottom floor right off the lobby. We had a view of the ocean and were blocked by the roof of the second row of rooms in front of us. If you want an unobstructed view, I would suggest either of the two sets of rooms closest to the pool and away from the main lobby. We did not exchange any money which you can do in the lobby and as for souvenirs, we found some interesting items and fair deals from the vendors on the beach who walk by but aren't push and were open to bargaining. It's unlikely we would return as we try to visit somewhere new each year unless a spot was really enjoyable and somewhere we wanted to return to(like the Secrets or other resorts in Jamaica that we've been to 4 times). Secrets Huatulco doesn't have that appeal for us which is why we probably won't return but it may be what someone else enjoys. .

Does not meet the standards of other Secrets resorts

This was our first trip to Huatulco. Having had wonderful experiences at other Secrets resorts, we booked our 11 day stay at the Secrets Huatulco. Unfortunately our expectations were not met. First off let me mention the good things we found. The maid and mini bar service in the rooms was consistently stellar. The rooms were well appointed albeit smaller than the rooms we've had at other Secrets properties. The food at the Barefoot Grill, Spice and Castaways restaurants was very good. Wifi coverage and speed was good throughout the property. From a negative perspective, we found the seating throughout the resort to be horrible. The lobby and bar seating were extremely deep wicker chairs and beds that were uncomfortable to sit in. The lounge chairs at the quiet pool were made of wicker and many were unraveling, offering no support whatsoever. There was no food service offered by the poolside servers even though it had been offered at the other Secrets resorts we've been to. There was no hard liquor in the mini bar. Although the resort advertises premium alcohol we had Bud Light beer on only the first night then could not find it again and Grey Goose vodka was only available 3 of the 11 days we were there. Overall food choices were much more limited than other Secrets escorts and the food quality was not up to the same standard we've experienced elsewhere. Shade in the pool area is a challenge; they should consider planting a few more trees to supplement the umbrellas. The pool was in dire need of maintenance; there were many tiles missing and mild was growing in the grout throughout the pool. Although the resort asks that people use headphones to listen to music there were a number of people who chose to bring their Bluetooth speakers down to the quiet pool. If you are not going to enforce the policy, don't bother to publish it. The biggest issue with this resort is the central elevator core. The only way to move between rooms, pools, beach and restaurant areas is via the central elevator core and/or the stairs. There are 3 elevators to service 399 rooms. One of the elevators never functioned during our entire stay and on 3 different days one of the other elevators also failed leaving a single elevator for everyone to use. The capacity of the elevator is listed as 12 persons but we could never pack more than 10 people in. The elevators, when they were operational, would often go the opposite direction of what they indicated and would randomly stop at floors when no one was there. Obviously they are in need of some serious upgrades. In addition to the elevator issues we also noted various areas where there were holes in the plaster (see photo). Overall we felt that we did not get the value for the money we spent at this resort and we will not return in the future.

My wife and I recently returned from a great 1 week stay at the Secrets. This was our first time at this resort and we had an absolutely fantastic time. The resort itself is stunning. Photos don’t do it justice. The views of the beach and bay especially from the Sky Bar are breathtaking. Everything is very clean and well maintained, both inside and outside the resort. We dined at all the restaurants except for the French. The steakhouse Castaways, was our favorite. On several nights, they had a large outdoor buffet and various special events in the main building. The coffee bar and sports bar were also great places to enjoy a drink. The outdoor grill was where we typically had lunch. The burgers and the nachos were great. Our nights typically ended at the Sky Bar enjoying the views and music. The food and drinks were great overall everywhere we went. The staff were all very friendly and provided excellent services throughout the entire resort Our room was on the 3rd floor of building number 6, just above the pool bar. Even though it was a lower building, the views were still excellent and it was a quick walk to the pool and beach. It had comfy bed, was very clean, everything worked and the fridge stocked daily. The pools were all very lively places during our stay, with aerobics and volleyball daily. Service around the pools and at the bars was excellent. The beach wasn’t as smooth and flat as many Caribbean beaches, but we still thought it was great. The ocean was rough some days, but we still went in and enjoyed it. A quick walk through the woods at the eastern end leads to a very private and much calmer beach. Chairs around the pool and at the beach were reserved most days very early in the morning, typically starting around 7am. There were still many not directly pool side or on the lower level opposite the pool bar throughout the day however. They were also constructing new palapas on the beach every night. The resort was quite full, so that could have contributed to the towel game being played. We still found places to sit and the employees around the area were always quick to help out too. As an adults only resort, it was still very lively with different events and forms of entertainment all day and night. Overall we had a fabulous trip and we are planning on returning again this year.

I had a wonderful time.. Everything was great, you name it room, food, drinks, beach and pool. And specially I want to reconize one person, his name is Nemorio and he works at the Castaway Restaurant. He made my meals the best, because of some allergys I suffer he took special care of me so I got the food as I ordered them. Thanks a lot.
