Beautiful place

Beautiful hotel. The entertainment staff, Syria, Vladiimir, were awesome! They went out of their way to make sure we were having a good time. The different restaurants were great, lots of different options. It would be nice if the pool bar didn't close ng at 5 or 6pm, but I get they need to or people wont go eat. They do need a menu with all the different options they can make at the bar. We had leak from the room above us and the next day the moved us to another room. The coupons you get you cannot use unless you sit thru a 90 minute lecture to join their vacation club. So that part really sucked, I was looking forward to a couples massage, but not for $300. After the 3rd day they stopped turning down our room or refilling our mini bar. The daytime maid was always nice and did a great job cleaning our room. You are treated like royalty if you join the vacation club, if you don't they kind of forget about you. The city and beaches are so beautiful, never did we feel threatened. They really care about their city and your view on way to hotels. Very well cared for. All the rooms have an ocean view, and a jacuzi tub so don't pay extra for that. The swim out rooms was just a pool for laps, it didn't connect to the other pools. The staff at the pools, were always bringing drinks. Would I go back yes I would, and recommend to others. More>

The staff is what makes this place!

This was an excellent vacation with few suggestions for improvement. First of all, what made this place so awesome was the staff. I never experienced a rude gesture or comment on behalf of any of the employees. On the contrary, they were warm, friendly and made our stay much more fun. Our favorites were Neftali (great smile and killer dance moves), Vladimir (hilarious and inclusive), Ciria (so sweet), and Francisco (very positive attitude). They are all hard workers, specially Neftali who took us snorkeling, sailing, and kayaking several times throughout our 7-day stay. These are all included with your stay, by the way. They all even had energy for 5 o'clock beach volleyball. The bartenders at the pool bar, Lupita (Guadalupe) and Leo are attentive and prompt with your drinks. They work nonstop! Another staff member, Inocencio (bellboy) was also friendly and helpful when we arrived. Funny story: he asked if we needed more hangers, which we did and they never came, which was not a big deal honestly. My mom, who loves to joke around, tried pulling his leg (figuratively speaking) for not bringing us our hangers. I'm guessing he thought my mom was seriously upset and he felt bad that the next day we received a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in our room. This was a nice gesture, which was not necessary, but highly appreciated. In regards to the hotel itself, the view is gorgeous. Everyone gets an ocean view. The rooms are fresh and housekeeping comes around twice: morning cleaning and to make the bed, and in the evening to leave the bed ready for when it's time to go to sleep. The bathroom is separate from the shower & tub, but they all have glass doors, so if you are not comfortable enough with the people you are rooming with, then you might have an issue exposing yourself. Some suggestions for improvement are in regards to the entertainment. The bingo cards are wearing down and the resort could invest in purchasing water-friendly cards since they are played at the pool bar. Also, the entertainment games seem to lack prizes. Does the hotel not purchase them? Because it seemed that the prizes were all coming from the guy who has his own crafts shop near the pool. Also, during our last night here, there was a Latin dance entertainment event. Not a single person was dancing and there was only one entertainment staff member, Francisco. We were told that Ciria and Neftali had the rest of the evening off and it was Vladimir's day off. My mom, who happens to be the life of the party everywhere we go, helped Francisco recruit guests who were seated to start dancing. I think the hotel could do a better job at scheduling the entertainment staff so that they are all present at events where more energy is needed to get everyone to participate. Heads up: there were A LOT of pool chairs available since we came at the end of June and it's their slow season, so the reviews you read about not finding a place to sit do not apply all the time. Also, bring bug spray! I brought bug spray, yet I have about 10 mosquito bites. Imagine without it! More>

This was a fantastic vacation. The room was awesome and nicely decorated. We had an ocean view as did all the rooms. We had nice cold Corona in the fridge everyday. The pool had a quiet end and a party end. We chose the quiet end. Plenty of chairs for the time that we were there. Never had to make a reservation for the other restaurants and could frequent them more than once. Service was great. Felt very safe here and did go downtown via taxi. All was good . The beach isn't very long for a walk but the water was lovely. We are returning in December of this year again. More>

Nice place but I wouldn't pay top dollar for it

We stayed at Secrets Huatulco at end of Apri, beginning of May this year. I think we were actually the last week of Canadian tourists before the charters stopped. We liked the resort but mainly because we got a smoking deal on it. But while we were there I kept wondering what kind of review I would give if we had paid the regular price for a week at Secrets. Beautiful location: You can't see any other resorts and you're tucked away in a secluded little bay. I really liked the layout of the place. Liked the Sky Bar and the view from up there. The buildings set along the cliffs are nice because everyone has a view. I also liked the spa set aside from the resort and up on the cliff. There's a ton of pool space, infinity pools, pool bar...lots of room so as to not be crowded. The little underwater twinkle lights are a nice touch at night. The Rooms: Pretty decent. We stayed in two during our week. At first we were in a standard room overlooking the ocean. Decent bed, nice shower, lots of space. But DO NOT stay here if you aren't comfortable pooping in front of whoever you are sharing a room with. Glass door and no option for privacy while on the toilet - kind of a screw up in room design if you ask me. And the balconies aren't very private. Only a half wall between ground floor suites and everyone in the resort can see onto your balcony no matter which room you are in. After a few days we decided to upgrade to one of the swim up rooms and we both really liked that. We used the swim up pool way more than any of the other pools and you can sit in your lounger in your own pool and get bar/food service. Still had the glass door bathroom issue. The 24-hour room service is a great perk - especially if you are leaving early or arriving late from an excursion. The beach is beautiful but the water is quite rough. The resort has lots of free activities like snorkeling and kayaking but for the week we were there it was too rough to do anything. The red flag was up the entire time and one day it was so rough they closed the beach altogether. This is a real negative for me because I love the ocean but I'm not a strong swimmer. Not being able to go into the sea very much was a real disappointment for me. There is another beach just along a little path through the bush. Also rough water but very beautiful and usually there is almost nobody there. The downside to this resort for me was the food and entertainment. Since it's a high end resort I expected the food and entertainment to be top notch. We aren't too picky - especially when it comes to the food but the eats here were no better than any three star Mexican resort. If you are expecting higher quality you won't be getting it. And likely the lack of entertainment was because it was the last tourist season week at the resort but there literally was no entertainment. One night out of the whole week they had some eighties cover band and another night there was a Mexican market/dinner in the courtyard. That was all that was offered for the week. A couple times there was a musician in the sky bar earlier in the evening but for the most part the place was a ghost town at night. I have worked in tourism and I know that by the end of the season you're pretty much running on fumes but really, the guests that arrive in the first few weeks deserve the same experience as the ones that book their trip for the end of the season. The whole resort really had the feel that they were done and just didn't care anymore. But keep in mind our experience may be tarnished since it was end of season. The spa: Super nice. Amazing views from the massage rooms - just incredible. Also an awesome hydrotherapy circuit. We really liked the spa. Basically this is a nice place to stay if you prefer swimming in pools to swimming in the ocean and if you get a steal of a deal. I'd be pretty bummed out if I paid full price to stay here because it just isn't the high end resort they are advertising it as. As far as the area goes: Huatulco is beautiful and definitely more untouched than most of the Mexican tourist destinations. I personally didn't love it as much as I thought I would. With the rough water, the scorching heat and the lack of excursions/entertainment/shopping options it wasn't the vacation I was expecting. I still prefer the Playa/Tulum area where I can get to gorgeous beaches, amazing local restaurants, great shopping and a ton of adventures all in one place. But Huatulco definitely has the small-town Mexican charm going for it if you are done with excursions and shopping. More>
