I visited Secrets Aura during the Spring Break season of 2016 with my wife. We stayed in 4335 - a Pool view Jr suite on the 3rd floor. - The room Though we stayed in the least expensive room category available, the room was really quite nice. The bed was comfortable by Mexico standards (sorry, but nothing is as good as the tempurpedic at home). The room featured a lot of natural light from the floor to ceiling window facing the pool. If you closed the drapes the room did lack much artificial light, as did the bathroom. However, it wasn't much of a bother. The room featured a minibar which was part of the all inclusive - which was stocked with water, beer, soda, juice. The room does not have a traditional dresser. Clothes are either hung or set on shelves in the furniture or closet. It's unique but not really bothersome. I suppose if you were staying for multiple weeks it could be difficult to manage all your clothes in this fashion. The bathroom had a very roomy shower with plenty of hot water at decent pressure. The shower features an open doorway which does not, as some have observed in reviews contain all the shower water well. However, a bathmat towel is provided at the shower door and it was not a bother. The room featured a safe for money, passports, and the like. There is also a hair dryer and lighted make up mirror in the bathroom. The room had a balcony which had a small table, 2 chairs and a hammock. It is a nice place to enjoy morning coffee. Each room also has a small desk, and sitting area. The room was cleaned daily - the housekeeping staff would typically arrive sometime between 9am and 1pm while we were out scuba diving. On one occasion they had not visited by 1pm, but had done so later while we were at the pool. The housekeepers come about around 8pm for a 'turndown' service which we did not need - leaving a chocolate on your bed with the following day's entertainment schedule. I can think of very little criticism to offer in the room. However in case there are vacationers that this would matter for: at times it would be difficult to find english programming on TV. Also at times my wife would complain about the bathroom lighting while applying makeup. However, we did not find either of those to be problematic - but if you are extremely discerning traveler and you think you care - well now you know. -the property There are 3 swimming pools available for all guests and 1 exclusive for 'club members'. The majority of the beach area is available for all guests, but there is a small area with premium chairs and shade reserved for club members (I think you can buy rooms in the member area - and enjoy those benefits even if you are not a 'member'). At times pool chairs could be a little hard to find, particularly with shade. The hotel has bins of clean beach towels available at every pools, as well as bins for dirty towels. I think sometimes guests would leave their old towels on chairs and it was difficult to discern if they had left or were returning. The hotel has a 'no reserving chairs' policy, but this is difficult to enforce. I never really felt like it was a major problem. Chairs on the beach are easier to find, likely because of the lack of beach shade. The hotel grounds are beautiful. The grounds keepers do a great job and the fauna is pretty. There was no sign of construction and I think I saw one maintenance person all week - they were invisible. When you did see someone there was always a very nice smile and greeting. They have definitely trained every staff member to greet guests even if their job is not directly interactive with guests. People pruning a tree or working a flower bed would turn and give a warm smile and greeting. The layout of the hotel is interesting. Because of the many pool side swim up rooms there is a vast arrangement of swimming pool tributaries that at times meant you could not walk directly to where you wanted to go....unless you wanted to dip into the water :). I recall thinking "I can see the place I want to be at 20 ft in front of me, but to get there I need to walk back, get on that other side walk and get around to that other bar. Really it's only a concern the first 2 days as you learn the grounds. My room was near the rear of the property, all the places to eat are on the beach areas. After I learned the lay of the land it was no bother. The main activity pool is a hopping place to be there are activity staff and a lot of adults that are lubricated with alcoholic beverages. If you are feeling social it's the place to be. If you are looking for a poolside nap, go to the other two pools. All pools had someone walking around and giving drink service. At times you might have to wait quite a while for them to make rounds. However, a full service bar was only ever about 30 steps away from a pool chair so if you needed something sooner that was easy enough. - The beach Cozumel has a large portion of the western coast which is made up of rocky shore. The area the hotel is in begins a portion of coarse sand beach. However it is the beginning section, so the sand only extends to the waters edge, once in the water it is mostly a stone/rock floor. This makes snorkeling amazing as lots of sea life lives in the stony area. This also makes wading into the water hard on your feet. Water shoes are a great idea. Many waded out into the water without water shoes and had no complaints, you simply must step gently, as you don't know what each step will feel like once full weight is upon your foot. The further you move to the south the sandier the bottom becomes, and the less sea life you see in it. There is a pier on the beach which extends into the water where there is a swim ladder to descend into deeper water for snorkeling and swimming. Also dive boats can and will pick you up on the pier. Dive shops from around the island (not simply Dive House, the hotel resident shop) can pick you up at this pier, the hotel does not charge any extra fee for using the pier with a different shop (years ago there was a fee for a non resident shop to pick you up). If you are reading this I'm sure you are aware that Cozumel is a dive destination and it is the most popular excursion on the island. I won't make any more comments about it. The grounds, and beach are about the same quality as any of the southern all inclusive hotels on Cozumel. The biggest thing that puts Secrets in the top 2 is the rooms - which are very nice compared to the competition in the area, and the food. - The food There are a number of options - first the al carte options: - Gohan, Sushi place located next to the skybar - open for dinner - Oceana, seafood place open for dinner, open for lunch as 'the barefoot grill' - Windows, a variety of dishes, located at the beach/lobby area, open for lunch and dinner - also some breakfast hours -Bordeaux, a french place open for dinner, requires men wear pants, no casual sandals Bordeaux is the only place where men must wear pants. All other Ala carte places require dry clothes (for Men shorts are ok, and swimsuit coverups for ladies are ok), sleeves on men (sorry guys show off your guns some place else), and some kind of shoe/sandal/flipflop. Additionally you can also visit the ala carte options at sunscape sabor next door. Forgive me I can't remember the names of the places there: -Mexican food place - same dress code as bordeaux -Steak place - similar to all other alacarte -Pizza place - similar to all other alacarte There are no reservations - it is simply first come first serve. I never waited more than 2 minutes for a table, but if you eat during peak times I could see it happening during peak summer seasons. However, I loved not having to pick where I wanted to eat a day before like I had in other all inclusive ala carte places. If you wanted more options: Buffet - Market Cafe is open breakfast lunch and dinner, we only ate it at breakfast Coffee shop - 24 hours: they have some sweets, and great desert coffees (frappe, something with ice cream an espresso) hot coffees, and some cold sandwiches available. room service - available 24 hours - included in the all inclusive they offer a selection which varies based on morning, day, or overnight hours The food choices and variety puts this place in the top 2, and maybe the #1 all inclusive on the island (it's a close contest between them and the palace resort). If you can't find a number of things to enjoy at Secrets then you have EXTREMELY discerning tastes and likely should not stay at an all inclusive. Just remember, whatever you eat - a Mexican variety is always different than where you are from. Windows serves a Tandoori chicken dish. I have had Tandoori chicken in india. In the states it's different than india, and in Mexico it's different than both india and the states. The biggest mistake I see people make in Mexico is ordering some dish and expecting the US version of it. The US version of sushi isn't truly sushi, and neither is the Mexican version of it. Whatever you order remember you are about to get the Mayan version. In fact insert the word Mayan before everything. What I recommend you try: Glase - a desert cold coffee with ice cream at the ice cream shop Chocolate rol - a banana desert roll wrapped in crepes at Gohan shrimp tacos at oceana/barefoot grill at lunch Spicy tuna roll - gohan Cheese burger with bacon at Windows on the lunch menu after a day of diving Ravioli - at Windows on the dinner menu sashimi the 'try all' option at gohan Get an evening drink at skybar during the last few minutes of daylight, it's pretty. There was more, but those stand out as all enjoyable. So one last item - the staff. The staff were great. There simply isn't another way to put it. They were warm, charming and cared about their work. Every waiter, waitress, host, hostess, checkin desk staff, bellman - they were all polite and warm no matter what I needed. Yvonne - a hostess at gohan was a particular stand out. I don't hand out 5 star ratings on trip advisor very much, within the realm of all inclusive places on the south end of cozumel this is easily #1. If you want to include the palace resort which is an 'intown' hotel with no real beach then we could start a great debate on who is #1. Full disclosure I booked this place during black friday/cyber monday on expedia and paid well under their regular rate (I paid $600 total for 2 people all inclusive for 6 nights). If I paid $400 per night I might not gush as hard about this place, as expectations tend to vary with what people pay. However, no matter what you pay, if you think any of the other southern cozumel resorts will do a better job, they won't. Apologies for typos or poor grammer. However, I'm not proof reading travel reviews unless someone wants to pay me to write them. Safe travels! More>

LOVED THIS PLACE!!

stayed here the first week of March 2016...had a WONDERFUL time! Beautiful! lots of space, never felt crowded even tho we heard they were full. Plenty of beach and pool spaces. Our room was modern and spacious. Food was just ok at the buffet but in the restaurants it was very good. only bad thing was our room was on the 4th floor and the elevator only went to the 3rd floor which was not a big deal to us but might be for some people. Would def recommend this place to others and certainly hope to go back again. The kids doing the activities and entertainment are fabulous! Brandon, Carlos, and the girl (cant remember her name) are just great at what they do! all the staff was just exceptional, really made us feel welcome. More>

I really loved my time at this hotel, the food was really good, staff was awesome, loved the amenities as well. My room had a great ocean view. The Skybar was really nice, great place to watch a sunset. Sushi wasn't the greatest but thankfully I'm not a huge sushi person anyway, I just tried it because it was there. They had a few evening activities that I really enjoyed, they had a live dance show which was really cool, an art show with some really interesting and cool pieces, and the live band was a fun time. The only thing I'll say about the live band is I kind of wish they did that on the same stage as the dance show and set up an area for people to dance as the lobby area where they set up was not really appropriate for dancing and I love to dance. Overall, loved this hotel and can't wait to go back. More>

High hopes for our honeymoon, extremely let down!
Mandy P, Jenks, Oklahoma
Tue Mar 15 11:49:36 EDT 2016
This place was a let down in about every way it could be. First, I had planned and booked our honeymoon here 6 months in advance, letting them know that it was our honeymoon, and would like something special, with the reviews I had read, I expected the room to be "done up" and a banner, but no. We had booked ocean view preferred, were put in a room that you had to go out on the balcony and look to the right to see the ocean, unacceptable on our honeymoon! We stayed our first night in that room, but the next morning, went to the "preferred lounge" to get a different room. We were told by the lady at the front desk of the "preferred lounge" that she couldn't help us with that. First of all, you never say that to a customer, secondly, this is the PREFERRED LOUNGE, that is where you are supposed to go for anything and everything you need, including issues with your room and/or room upgrades, and those words should never be spoken. We did get a manager and were given a new room, one with the ocean view we were looking for. We told her it was our honeymoon, and nothing special had been done, and later than night, our room was decorated special, however, the room next door had a big banner across it "Happy Anniversary" yet...it was our honeymoon, the most special time of our lives and we never got one, again...booked and noted 6 months in advance, emailed a couple times just weeks before our arrival to make sure they knew this, and they confirmed, yes, we got the memo. Moving on...the preferred status gets you nowhere. We were completely ignored at the preferred pool, by staff and other guests alike. We were looked at like we didn't belong there, we are not teenagers, we are in our mid 30's but clearly the preferred area is only meant for older people, that's how we were made to feel anyway. None of the staff in the preferred area ever acknowledged us our entire stay. In fact, the pool is supposed to close at 8, and at 7:30 I went for one last quick swim and was asked to leave by an employee getting ready to clean the pool. They told me the pool is closed, it was 30 minutes before closing, so I went to the other pool, for everyone, and swam with no issues until even after 8. That pool is where we ended up staying, people were friendlier and having a good time. The beach area is useless, it's pretty but useless. You can't swim in the ocean, nothing but rocks, we did walk along the beach with our beach shoes, and enjoyed that. We spent more time at the sister resort than we did here, as soon as we stepped foot onto the sister resort and the entire time we were there, we were constantly greeted by every staff member with a friendly hello. I didn't care for much of the food here, again, chose to go to the sister resort, the Mexican restaurant over there was good, the French restaurant at Secrets was the best option, but mostly it all tasted the same. I wont be back, of course, I didn't let it ruin our special time together, nothing ever could. The positives...everything that had nothing to do with the staff. The views are breathtaking oh and the coffee shop, we loved the coffee shop, and the person that worked in the coffee shop as well, he was always friendly and helpful. More>

Great experience-top notch staff

OK-we stayed at the sister resort Sabor back in November, 2015 and it was just OK. I gotta say that this company reads their reviews and does their best to make changes. We stayed on the Secrets side this last trip in March, 2016. I'm impressed. First, they did read my Sabor review and they did make some changes. I noticed that consistency food prep quality was much better and the coffee was changed in the restaurants. The great: The staff-can’t say enough. Service was very good. Upgrades are perennial on the grounds and we did notice the changes from November to March. The ocean air really beats up concrete, so someone is always patching, painting, etc. Restaurant quality was exceptional-Sushi joint was good, not great (I know , why were you eating sushi in Mexico…..). Skybar is a very nice addition! Snorkeling right off the beach is actually quite good. I like the fact it’s NOT geared for spring breakers and they say as much in their advertising. Spa was great-did an 80- minute beach massage and it was fab. Staff notables: Shouts out to The Market Café staff: Chris, Rosana, Cristel, Gilberto, Eugenia, German, Rosa. Manatees Pool Bar: Fernando, Mauricio, Isabel and our star bar tender Vicente. Tortuga Bar: Rigo! Entertainment staff: Brandon and Carlos. The good: Bell captain went through the room with us to ensure everything was in working order. Alcohol quality was good with good selection. You had to ask for branded booze, or the bartenders used their call brands. All fine if you just wanted to get hammered, but I was looking for taste and lack of migraines. Rooms were clean and spacious and reasonably quiet. Aircon units worked well. Nice selection of pools. Store on site have the stuff you need if you forget it. The OK-could use more palapas (thatched shade umbrellas) on the Secrets side (Scottish skin). Otherwise chair availability is good. Beach chaise chairs are not that comfortable so grab a couple extra towels for cushioning. The bad: really hard to come up with a lot. Power washer guys need to get their work done in the morning before the activity levels are high. It’s the tropics so get used to the fact there are bugs, critters and the occasional mildew spots (not 100% controllable by hotel). You do get a mangrove-style odor from time to time, but it’s a product of forest meeting salt air at the water’s edge. I recommend this property. I feel value for the money is very good. More>
