Great Resort, Tropical storms are no good, sometimes so are the doors
MAXWELL H.
Aug 26 2017
Upon entering the hotel lobby we were greeted with champagne and cold towels. They guy at the front desk was very nice and even upgraded us to the preferred section at no additional cost. That day we went down to the beach but realized we needed to get back in to the room. I walked back to our room and the key card did not work. I tried the second card and still no go. I walked up to the front lobby and they reset it. Unfortunately same thing happen, the door wouldn't register the card. We went back and forth numerous times and each time the lobby said security would meet us at the room. Security never showed, I asked a guy with walky talky to page security for me and he told me when need to go to the preferred lobby since we were in the preferred section. We did that, and wallah! it worked. It would have been nice to hours before. Other than that the hotel and rooms were nice. Our A/C was very loud and the roof leaked but that only happened when the tropical storm rolled through. All-in-all I would recommend this resort to friends. It was nice and quiet and they always had things going on. Look for GEO if you go there, he is a great guy and tons of fun. The last thing I would recommend the resort do is give guests a list of what stuff around the resort is free, i.e. 2 hour snorkeling and 30 minute kayaks. Other than that the food was good and it was a great week away from responsibility.

Seven Nights

We booked as Preffered guests staying in room 1415. Preferred boils down to the best room locations. Our tub didn't work. The shower never got warm. No matter the tip amount for housekeeping or mini fridge, it was all the same standard service. The food at Bordeaux and room service was our favorite. The pools were fantastic, bar service was great. Massages at Pevonia Spa were amazing. Keeping all this in mind, our vacation was taken toward the end of the busy season. I understand the natural environment is going to deteriorate the hotel and cause some issues with humidity in the room, cracks in the walls etc... There was ONE night I lost my mind. Mosquito night. Not the resorts fault. My husband did not have pants and was refused seating in Bordeaux. Windows was full. Leaving us to eat in our rooms. THAT'S something the resort could have overlooked. Everyone was getting up to leave Oceana and get away from the mosquitoes. Throughout our stay were sought after by a time-share guy, that actually cornered us while checking in in the Preffered Lounge. The beds were great, lots of room, great views. Overall, our vacation is what we make of it and I enjoyed more if it than not.

Our Wait Staff

Aug 20 2017
We had the best wait staff after the second day Sergio and Mario knew that I wanted a Bloody Mary and my sister wanted coffee. they were very attentive to us and others around us. Always asking if there was anything else we needed. Happy smiles and glad to see their people for the day. Karina and Monse were also very helpful to us. The only part we did not appreciate was from the front table Spa section or Shark Tank as we call them. Very pushy about the spa incentive of getting 150.00 to spend. that s nice but we spent more than that to get there for sun and relaxation in the ocean and thats exactly what we wanted to do. She wouldn't take NO for an answer till we finally walked away.

The hotel staff wasn't that friendly. They didn't seem to like working there. The room was fine but the food was average and the service was below average, so we will not be staying there again.

Not what we expected
JOHN E.
Aug 04 2017
When we arrived we were very disappointed, we were told we were upgraded to the premier section and thought it was going to be an upgrade but we went from an ocean view room to a pool view room. The overall resort was older and more run down than we expected. The place was dirty with glasses all over the place and trash was not picked up. The next day that part was a little better but the attitudes of the staff was not good. The service at the restaurants was bad and if you were on the beach and someone did come around and ask if you wanted something to drink it would be around 30-45 min before you would get your drink back and it was either melted or the wrong drink when you did get it. Drinks were very light on alcohol and the whole thing about being in the premier section was supposed to be about the premium liquor. The only thing that would make me want to come back to secrets Aura would be the beach and water those were the only thing that were amazing and for the price we paid I would have expected a ton more from this place. We have gone to Secrets maroma and Puerto Vallarta and both of those were 10's all the way around.

Disappointed
CHRISTOPHER K.
Jul 25 2017
A little disappointed in our stay at Aura Cozumel. We have never stayed at a Secrets before, we have been to Sandals. Our friends we were traveling with have stayed with Secrets and spoke very highly of riviera maya resorts. We were very disappointed in staff at restaurants and bars, no one was eager to serve us, even when we tipped ahead of time (and tipping is not necessary). Mixed drinks were not top shelf unless you asked for it. When I did ask for Captain Morgan I was told I could not have it because I was not a preferred guest. Mixed drinks tasted more like the mix than the alcohol. Stuck with beer to get the alcohol. Even in restaurants the staff was not real quick to serve, some didn't even ask for drink order, went right to meal order and didn't realize we hadn't even ordered drinks. Would have liked more indoor restaurant options since we were there in July and it was very hot and sticky. Maintenance around resort was so so. Pools were worn and needed fixed in several places. Our room was decent, but ceiling in bathroom was coming down, looked as if mirror was holding one side of ceiling up. Room was very dark, not many lighting options, and one lamp light bulb went out Day 2 and never replaced. Shuttle service from Secrets back to airport seemed confusing and chaotic for staff. Now food was excellent at Secrets and Sunscape. We did have Marco at DaMario's at Sunscape and he was wonderful! The only restaurant we went back to because we loved his service. Oh, and one thing we found really awkward was porn on the tv. Maybe that's normal for Secrets?

Our initial room was horrible: poor furniture, dirty tub, A/C not working, mini refrigerator leaking onto floor, shower leaked onto floor also. The room needed a lot of tlc. Carlos the manager was rude & not helpful, Cynthia was great & switched us to a wonderful room #1122. We were very happy with her & her service!

Great food, comfortable rooms, nice beach with beautiful ocean and lots of great snorkeling right off the beach. Not one complaint..Except there was a sewer smell that was very bad but it was off and on. And it is a small island so I would assume these things can't be helped.

So did not live up to Secrets standards

We traveled October 9 through 12. The pros: The staff are fabulous. Their every response was "my pleasure." We were met at check-in with a cold wash cloth and a glass of champagne. When that ran out they quickly asked if we wanted something else to drink. Check-in was fast and efficient. We arrived early so our room wasn't ready and they walked us to lunch. We had a romantic beach dinner and Manuel was amazing. He was friendly and conversational when asked. He offered up champagne, after dinner drinks. He was delightful, offering to take lots of pictures for us. Carlos at the Skybar gave us and another couple a history lesson about Tequila. He was so welcoming every time we arrived. The beach service was attentive. The lovely lady who kept getting our drinks for us - her name escapes, me it was very long and started with a V...was very attentive!! The snorkeling just in inches of the water right off of the beachfront was amazing! We saw so many kinds of fish. People post so many complaints about the rocks on the beach, but that just makes the snorkeling so much better. We saw starfish and giant angels, etc. The bad news- the property is so old and outdated, that no amount of beautiful furniture can help. It's like putting lipstick on a pig. The property feels gross. I saw people cleaning everyday but it was still dirty-looking because of the age. We had to force open our door everyday. The smell everyone complains is about I found out is from the island's mangroves and no fault or control of the hotels in the area. It still smells bad, nonetheless. The pool grout was either black or green with algae or mold. The hot tub wasn't on 2 of the days we were there. Because the resort is so small, restaurants choices were slim. We were only there 4 nights and 2 of those nights the Sushi restaurant was closed. Our t.v. was teeny and had a white spot in the middle so watching was rough after a long day of fun. Window seals in our room were broken sold mold and dirt had gotten between them. the first night we had no hot water in the shower. We complained and it was fixed. We heard someone else complain at the front desk about the same thing and it seems to be another recurring theme of these reviews. Our jets in the tub didn't work. We complained about that but those were not fixed. We did sit through the timeshare, even though when you say that they call it something else. They admit they know that it's the "ugly duckling" of the brand. So why continue to operate it???? I will never go back and it's a shame because the staff are just amazing. It's not their fault the company isn't renovating quickly enough.

Why all the bad reviews? Last minute booking

We were in the Yucatan for 2 weeks for our wedding then honeymoon. We like to travel without many plans so we can see what locals recommend. After leaving Ek Balam we drove to the ferry to take to Cozumel. We arrived at night and checked the reviews and prices on trip advisor. We originally booked at the Sunscape, but when we arrived there was a band playing that was ridiculously loud so we asked to upgrade to Secrets. From the moment we arrived everyone was wonderful. The hotel itself is well maintained and our room was large with a king bed overlooking the pool. Mini bar was always stocked and our service was great. The location on the island is fantastic. Close to town but close to the reefs and good snorkeling. Food was decent, much better than we expected. Overall we had a great end to our honeymoon.

Interesting stay

We recently traveled to this resort from October 7th-14th for our honeymoon only after having to book last minute due to the storms in the Caribbean. I wish we would of had time to do more research. The stay did not live up to the Secrets name we heard from friends. We can start with arriving at the resort they make you feel great. We were in the preferred suites that gave us access to a few different areas and one was where you check in to your room at. Extremely welcoming and informative here. Right after check in they pitch the "welcome" breakfast that they have to tell you more about what is included at the resort. Told it was going to last about 45-60 minutes. We bit and did it. Horrible move it is a timeshare pitch that they will not listen to a word you say unless it is yea. The young lady was very nice but told us that the resort there in Cozumel was the worst property in the group of hotels. Came to understand that later on. The bar and cleaning staff at the hotel were great. Always had a smile and willing to help in any way. The staff at the sky bar were top notch as well in the VIP area. The cleaning staff stayed on top of room service and was prompt with any request. The beach itself is beautiful. Although going into the water can get a little tough since the water is full of rocks. Would highly suggest taking water shoes with you to maneuver around in the water. When it comes to the rooms that we stayed in and yes I said rooms. We were on the top floor in a preferred junior suite that had an amazing bathroom and a pretty large room. We were amazed when we first arrived and couldn't wait to spend the week there. The second night we heard it raining and sounded like it was inside. As we woke up in the morning the bathroom was completely flooded! I walked down and let the front desk know about the issue and they said that it would be addressed immediately. We decided to get away from the resort for the day while it was repaired. After coming back eight hours later we walked into a clean room that smelt of mildew with the ceiling still soaking wet and pieces chipping away. I walked back down and let the front desk know and was told that nothing was ever noted. He apologized and said that he would move us to another room. We obliged to move since it was right down the hall. The room had less of a view but it worked. Once moved from that room into the other one we were a bit frustrated but hey it's our honeymoon let's make the best of it. We being getting ready to go out a few days later and it started to rain once again. We were surprised to see that while watching tv the ceiling in our new room started leaking! At this point I was amazed that this must be normal for these rooms. Contacting the front desk they wanted to move us to another room for a night and after that would put us into a ocean front room for the remaining two days. We asked for it just to be fixed because a moving rooms two more times just wasn't an option. Once again came back to a clean room and wet ceiling. We just know going forward that we will not be going back to this resort for numerous reasons.

Sadly too unwell to appreciate.

We were placed in the preferred area as the result of Mr Guzman’s intervention in a serious complaint we had made regarding a manager in the Sunscape. Firstly it was just lovely not being in a room with evident damp although by Sunday we both had the start of pneumonia and the doctor was consulted for one of us. We are both very keen to avoid antibiotics. So although our second week was spent in gracious surroundings, sadly we were too unwell to really enjoy anything other than the access to a nice bathroom with fixtures and fittings that worked. We both prefer garden view rooms because of the chance to see wildlife, and there were lots of little lizards to keep us entertained. Apart from the grackles in various stages of tails falling apart...there were various birds, vultures overhead and sometimes the pelicans flew past the beach. The preferred pool sadly was colonised by the privileged who seemed to be able to take up residence in the pool at 10am (bar opens) and rarely leave 6pm (bar closed). Hmmmm. The food. Well, lots of choice. One trip to the ?shack. Poor. Needs to think about why it’s there. Bordeaux: lovely staff. Very obliging. Sadly not french food as we understand it. We would love to see more chicken dishes on the menu. A decent house red. If I was paying large sums for wine...and I really enjoy a decent burgundy...I would want to know the vintages. Windows: lovely staff: Luis, Carina, William and Alfonso. Reliable breakfasts, reasonable choices at other meals although more chicken dishes would be appreciated by us. Clearly catering for big beef eaters is the mantra in Mexico. A shame. Nelly Baas is a treasure as is Jair in the Preferred Lounge. Nelly gave us access to the spa for our last four days, I think she hoped it might help our deteriorating pulmonary function. It did, and we were able to get some sleep at night. Until our last night trying out the Sky Bar and sushi when without warning, some kind of mozzie smoke bomb was triggered. Sadly I have always been sensitive to these chemicals so my chest rapidly deteriorated. I advised Nelly it might be sensible to warn guests of future plans re these kinds of strategies. I think she will discuss with senior mgt. Both Nelly Baas and Mr Guzman offered us an automatic upgrade should we ever return to Cozumel. Very kind and we may take them up on the offer because we have unfinished business here. Sandra only managed 2 dives before her pneumonia effectively ruled out diving. We did an evening with the turtle conservationists and a wonderful road trip to see Chichen Itza and Ek’ Balam with friends and Mayans Explorers (great company) before we became unwell. We had wanted to return to Coba, Tulum and see a bit more of Cozumel but health issues prevented that being possible.

Dissaponited to say the least

very old and deteriored. the a/c unir is sooo old in the rooms that makes a lot of noise. the tvs and cable signal is weak and dated. Too bad that in 5 years of being Secrets, they have not updated enough to justify the price somebody pays. One of the meals came with a wrapping plastic 😱. if you go to Cozumel go to another hotel.
