Lots of things to do for kids
WILLIAM C.
Dec 23 2017
The only downfall of this hotel is the restaurants are a good walk from the pool and beach. They do have cook outs on the beach some days but they need to have food closer to the beach and pool. The wild life here is amazing. The endless options that come with this hotel are great.

This is our second year in a row at Sandos Caracol. It is unique. Small, intimate, with tons of activities. Where else can I feed turtles after breakfast, swin in a cenote and waterfall, then hand feed grapes to monkeys on my balcony. Finish the day with a filet mignon dinner followed by a Maybe Cultural Fire show that blows me away! The only negatives are the dessert. Wow. We call it colored mush cake. Very disappointing. But the food is great.

We can't say enough about the help we got from the Apple representative at the Sandos Caracol Ecos resort. Allejandra couldn't have been more helpful. Every single request or concern we had she took care of immediately. Our final dinner was exquisite. She set up a private dinner with one of the restaurants. Because of her service and pleasant attitude, we would definitely consider working with Apple for another vacation. The transfers or seamless, and the resort was perfect for our family.

I would like to start by saying that the Apple team was very helpful and professional. Whe we arrived at our hotel, the room we were given did not have the King bed we had paid for and chosen. We were promptly moved into a room with a king bed. Unfortunately that rooms sliding door was broken. It had a large gap on the sidecar that didn't move. Because there were storms, we had water coming in and had difficulty sleeping due to the noise. It took several requests to get someone there to repair the door. It wasn't till day 3 that it was repaired. As a matter of fact it frequently took several requests to obtain sometas simple as orange juice. When we went to visit the Apple desk to arrange our transport back, the roof was leaking quite a bit. I felt terrible for the representative. Despite these problems we did enjoy the resort. The entertainment was wonderful and the food was good. I hope this review helps to improve some of the problems we experienced. Thank you Diana and Michael

Upon check in, we were NOT informed of the hours of the restuarants, how to make reservations for the restuarants, how to find them or any information on the resort, a general overview or anything. We sis check in late but no matter what time, we should be informed upon check in. We missed out on several opprotunities do do the eco tours and activities because we did not know where the booth was. Were unsatisfactory check in experience

Check in took about 45 min. We asked to be near the other family we travelled with and we were 2 buildings apart. Maids did not clean our room 2 of the days we stayed. The resturants have adult only evenings making it unfair for families that are there. The pools were not clean and were very hot to swim in. The bars closed early.

Disappointed All-Around this Trip with Apple / Resort
MICHAEL W.
Jul 14 2017
Overall, very disappointed in both this resort and Apple representatives during this trip. We booked a Royal Elite Penthouse (which the site indicated was ocean-view). We got to the hotel & to our room where we could see only large trees. We went back to the front desk & were told that there were no ocean-view rooms at the resort. We talked to Apple back and forth for days, who finally admitted that their description on website was wrong but didn't offer anything while we were at the resort. We have to reach out to Apple / Travel Agent (AGAIN!) after returning home. There was absolutely nothing special about the Royal Elite section - took forever to get in touch w/ room service, wifi barely functioned, and the Royal Elite section of the beach did not allow children although children are allowed in the Royal Elite section of the hotel. So, other than that huge disappointment, the main pool was dirty. Just lots of 'stuff" floating on top of the water. There was a clean, smaller pool but it was surrounded by construction everywhere & construction noise. Restaurant service was slow & so was bar service. There definitely were not enough bartenders at this resort. Pluses: Resort photography was great. If I would've known I would've booked a family photo session. The Japanese restaurant was good (& fun!) - recommend making these reservations as soon as you arrive. Food was actually pretty decent at all of the restaurants although it all seemed to be the same food. We take at least one, if not two, Apple trips a year and we were overall disappointed in this experience and the response from Apple Vacations.

The resort grounds were wonderful to explore, with lots to see. The cenotes are amazing! Our stay was great until the last few minutes when we were locked out of our room. Victor, the concierge, was very helpful. He made sure we got to the airport on time. And Angel, from maintenance was also very kind despite our language barrier.

My grandson, his girlfriend and I had a wonderful time at this resort. I read numerous reviews prior to leaving and I am glad I didn't base my decision to stay at this resort on some of them. The room was exceptionally clean, bathroom was spotless and have no complaints on the room what so ever. The grounds are beautiful, numerous paths to take for walks but somewhat confusing at first. Found a lot of little things to see on those little lost journeys including lots of animals. The beach area was very nice, the water had rocks but we liked it. Lots of shells to dig for around the rocks. The food in the buffet was satisfactory, certainly had enough choices for everyone to find something. We didn't reserve at the Japanese restaurant early enough to get in, but thought I would check at the desk as I was walking by, and a couple was cancelling 3 of their 12 spots. So we were able to enjoy the spectacular Hibachi Chef show as he prepared our meal. The food was absolutely superb, it was the highlight of my trip...Thank you Sandos Caracol Resort!!! Now I will state my only disappointment and that was the night time entertainment. The shows were all Mayan related or for children. I enjoyed the outside fire show, but it was a little long and seem to be repetitive type dancing. I was hoping there would be some adult type music/shows available but they didn't have any, so there wasn't much to do at night. All in all, I really enjoyed this resort and it was a perfect choice for my grandson and his girlfriend and their first time to Mexico.

Let me start out saying this was our second stay at Sandos. When you read the reviews that check in is a nightmare believe it, they just don't seem to care about improving it. The things that go wrong do so everyday. Food run outs like kids pizza, frozen slushes and ice cream machines run out daily and they don't plan for it. The pool opens at 8:00 everyday but they don't start cleaning until swimming has started. The pool chairs have bird poop everyday and they are never hosed off.last year we had large rooms with clean bathrooms but upgrades this year were dirty and had mold on ceilings. The children love the shows and water park but resort has declined.

Beautiful place for family trip

The place has a lot of new buildings and activities to participate in since the last time I came 9 yrs ago. The 3 cenotes within the compound can be swam with or without the staff. There are 9 restaurants and several bars : Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean, Brazilian , International, Vegetarians, Mexican, Snack bar (open 24 hrs) and Fish and Steak. If you are a member or a guest of the Royal Elite Club, you get to enjoy to hang out at their own infinity pool and resto as well as the Select club. They have a beautiful building for spa and massages with sauna and gym. There is a zoo and bike trails. The water park is big and lots of tube slides. They have small zoo for domesticated animals: donkey, chicken, ducks, pig, goat, and maya dog for people to see and feed with the staff. They have some other animals in their zoo that you have to spot from time to time like monkey, raccoon and others. The servers and staff are all friendly, accommodating and ...they really work hard. We have three rooms (penthouse and 1 bedroom suite), nicely furnished rooms with balcony. We stayed for the week of the new year. Lots of entertainment within the resort. Exchange rate here is low, you are better off charging on your credit card or have your foreign money exchanges at 5th avenue. They have gift store or mini mall but they are extremely expensive. I suggest that on your 1st day, go to 5th avenue and do your shopping and then enjoy the rest of the week in the resort. Kayaking, swimming and snorkeling at the cenote are free. You can do seadoo for US$50 for 30 minutes. Nice place to have a wedding too, I saw 4 weddings during that week. I will surely come back again. Transportation for a van from cancun airport to the hotel is US$120 one way.

Great resort conceptually but execution is severely lacking.

We spent Christmas 2017 with extended family at the Sandos Caracol Eco Resort. It had good reviews for families so we thought it'd be great for our 6 families. End result was so-so at best. Good: It is indeed an eco resort. Lots of animals roaming around. Large focus on being "green". Waterpark and beach are fantastic for kids. Option for daypasses to sister resort Sandos Playacar is great. OK: The food is ok at best. Fish is usually cooked well but the rest is pretty bad. The first few days its acceptable but the more you eat it, the harder it is to stomach. The included drinks are ok as long as you avoid anything with artificial flavouring which puts an off-taste into everything. The shows overall are ok. The Mayan ones (external company) are good but the resort hosted ones are very cheesy. Bad: Service is ALWAYS slow. All 6 families arriving on different dates took 1 hr to check in and at least 30 minutes to check out. Why? I have no idea. It's just slow. Dinner at a la carte restaurants can take over 2.5hrs to finish. The rooms are showing wear and the floors always have a "beach dust" feel.

Great resort!

Sandos Eco resort is a really beautiful resort with nice and new rooms. The food is really nice and there is a lot to do on the resort like snorkeling, aqua park, gym, spa etc. Every day there a lot of activities by the entertainment team at the pool, theater or cenote. Especially the little Alex O. from the entertainment team is a really good entertainer. He toughed us how to dance and had a really nice program at the swimming pool! Tumb up for him!

Stayed from December 12 to 19th. Travelled with my 6 year old son. On the day of our arrival, my son stepped on a sea erchin in the ocean nearby. (Not in front of the resort) The painful screams were horrifying. But from within minutes of him starting to scream, someone had called for the medic, who immediately took us to the on staff resort doctor. She was so kind and caring. Within minutes she gave hin an injection for the pain. She then sent us to a hospital for treatment. While in her office, she explained everything to me. A concierge who heard his screams came into the room to assist. I am a single mom so they took care of my son while I ran back to my room to get my passport and wallet. She made all of the arrangements for the taxi to the hospital and the visit to the hospital and made sure the hospital was aware of our pending arrival and the medical report. As I was leaving the resort for the hospital, a man walked up to me, introduced himself as the director of the hotel and asked if I wanted him to accompany me to the hospital. There wasn’t a doubt as a single mom that I wanted someone to ensure my hospital visit in a foreign country was a good one. He came to the hospital and waited with me and spoke to the doctors to make sure I understood everything that was happening and that I was getting the very best treatment. He even entertained my son with his cell phone to keep him calm. I think my son may have made a friend that night. On our way back to the resort that night, he made arrangements for food to be delivered to our room. The next day, the concierge who had taken care of my son while I ran to my room called to check on his well being. The doctor called the next day to check on him and insisted she see him again at no cost. She ordered 3 perscriptions for him that day to ensure he was well. The medic/lifeguard from the beach called our room to check on his well being. I don’t think I could have got any better service from this hotel. My son was running around the waterslides within 2 days so they story ends well. I have been to Mexico many times and I don’t think I was ever treated with such kindness and concern. The strange thing is that I have been to Mexico 6 other times and just before going to this resort my research online turned out to be all about the lack of care and compassion when medical treatment is needed. For the first time, I was concerned about going to Mexico as a single mom of a 6 year old. After my experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to visit again and would highly recommend this resort for it’s exceptional service. Not to mention the entertainment is probably the best I have seen!

I picked this resort because it looked like there were more activities compared to other resorts. I went solo because nobody else could get off of work. I did enjoy the snorkeling, biking, swimming, kayaking, nightly shows and some of the eco activities were nice (more for kids though). I do love that they are trying to teach people about things we can change to help the environment! Most of the employees were great. Checking in and out is not fun. Very unorganized. Also other customers are constantly complaining to each other, it just brings everyone down. The check in process can take well over an hour depending on which line you get in. Also you have to wait in line to check out. They say to pay the exit tax. The adults only upgrade is worth it! I really enjoyed theocean front club house. It's open until 10. The bar has higher end liquor selection. There are always snacks inside. Clean bathroom and showers. A library, pool table and other games. The lounges in the beach are nice. Plus no kids!! I also enjoyed the adults only pool and upper deck. The beach is Rocky. I read a lot of bad reviews, but I thought it was ok. You have to be careful walking out. Keep an eye on your kids and bring water shoes for them. I didn't wear any but I was careful. It's a natural beach. If you walk about 3/4 of a mile you will find no rocks. I spent time in the hot tub (in the spa) almost everyday. It's very relaxing in the pool area of the spa. I loved all the animals. They get active early in the AM, around 6 and at night! The cats are very calming. You will likely have a cat sleeping near you at the pool. Monkeys will try to see if you have food. They discourage feeding the animals. They are all taken proper care of. The nightly shows are interesting. The Mayan fire ceremony is very cool. But if you want a good spot you need to get down there 45 minutes to an hour early. They serve food and drinks. So get an early light dinner or eat after. I found the food to be not very exciting. I am a vegetarian. I ended up eating a lot of salad, veggies and pizza. They had very little for fruit. I tried the Italian restaurant one night. Ordered the vegetarian lasagna. It was very weird. Lots of grilled veggies inside. Almist like they took left over veggie stir fry and put it inside lasagna noodles. The tiramisu was good. I loved all the walking and trails. I wouldn't go back unless I was traveling with kids. Not a great place for a solo person to go. Food wasn't great. Room was smelly and small. Plus I was looking forward to a king and got a double room. By far the least nice all-inclusive room I've stayed in. I typically like to sit on my patio. It was tiny! The worst thing overall at this resort - all the people complaining and bringing others down. I wish they would just keep it to themselves. Go if you enjoy nature, walking and activities. I would have loved this resort as a kid. Have open mind!
