Sandos Caracol Eco Resort

This hotel only had AC in the rooms. The restaurants, theater, game areas only had ceiling fans. That’s a problem especially when you go in July. The beach area was not very swimmable because it was full of rocks, Moss & a lot of seaweed. Also the rooms had a terrible musty smell, that stunk up all our clothes & bags. We went for the day to Sandos Playacar & that was so much nicer. The water park for kids was nice, but that was about it.

I do appreciate the efforts made for animal rescues. However I did wish the donkey, pigs, etc were farther away from lobby. Just not my thing,on vacation.

This resort, with it's eco-friendly feel and cultural immersion opportunities, was the perfect resort for our family. We have kids (ages 3 and 6 years old) and they had a blast. I loved feeling immersed in the jungle, the food was great, the staff was SO FRIENDLY and there were so many things to do. I was impressed with how much was included in our stay. It was excellent!

The only thing I would say could be better is the food selection. I would suggest maybe French fries, chicken nuggets, and other foods that would be more appealing to kids. The hotel was very clean not out dated like other reviews suggested. Staff was very friendly. Shout out to Jesus at the front desk for getting us into a room when our room wasn’t ready. I recommend this resort to anyone with small children. Also, this hotel is extremely safe and in a gated area for extra safety :) sandos caracol is worth trying out

Long story short, we were less than impressed. First, when we got there, there was a huge line at the registration desk, having us wait 20 minutes to check in. The people at the front desk never seemed happy or that they wanted to help. There was no explanation of where things were, what meals were served at what restaurants, or what times meals were served. We were not given a map of the resort so we had to find our way around ourselves. Our room smelt beyond musty, the worst I'd ever smelt. There were tiny ants all over our counters and tables all week long. They had this strict towel rule that you were given a card when checking in, exchange the towel at the one and only towel stand, if you lose your towel or card, $50 will be charged to your room. The towel stand closed down at 5pm so by the time we checked in and got down to the beach, we were unable to get towels. The food was mediocre at almost every restaurants. There was only about 2-3 meals that we were happy with. There was several times that they were out of regular Coke and the buffets weren't always well stocked (food seemed to run out quickly). I felt that most of the staff we interacted with seemed to hate their job and did not want to talk to you or try to help. About half way through the week, one of the concierge staff found me on the beach and gave me a tiny piece of paper that had all the restaurants and times open listed on it. The second night, when we got back to our room, the cleaning lady left us a book about the resort that included a map and other information. These things would've been nice to get at check in. The beach was very rocky, which I understand is in the hands of mother nature with the high tides and such, but it wasn't very inviting for bare feet; especially for children. The mosquitoes were beyond terrible, but again, out of the control of the resort, I would think. There were shows every night that were very family friendly, however, you had to find a seat 30-60 minutes before the show started to get a seat at all to be able to watch the show. The resort was big, and almost too big for all that they had to offer. I say that because everywhere you wanted to go was an easy 5-10 minute walk. That's a lot for kids in my opinion. There was several times that my son became bored with the lack of things going on. Everything we did or wanted to do, there was a long wait to be able to do it (snorkeling, kayaking, etc.) I also ended up getting an 80 minute massage on my birthday and I was not worth the money spent or the time. It was $175 massage and it was less than enjoyable. I was told when I booked it that I was to get a special gift being it was indeed on my birthday. That which I had to ask for and the receptionist knew nothing about and almost didn't want to honor that. She took one step the her left and pulled a sample pack of exfoliation scrubs out of a basket sitting on the desk and handed that to me as if I was begging for a gift. The massage itself wasn't enjoyable because I had requested a female and got a male massage therapist. Then, he coughed and sniffled and breathed heavily through the entire massage. He pushed very hard, even though I asked him twice to let up on the pressure. He bent me in ways that made me feel I was at a chiropractor's office. I was less than please when I left the spa. We spoke to some other families that had the same complaints and concerns that we did. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

The only downfall of this hotel is the restaurants are a good walk from the pool and beach. They do have cook outs on the beach some days but they need to have food closer to the beach and pool. The wild life here is amazing. The endless options that come with this hotel are great.

This is our second year in a row at Sandos Caracol. It is unique. Small, intimate, with tons of activities. Where else can I feed turtles after breakfast, swin in a cenote and waterfall, then hand feed grapes to monkeys on my balcony. Finish the day with a filet mignon dinner followed by a Maybe Cultural Fire show that blows me away! The only negatives are the dessert. Wow. We call it colored mush cake. Very disappointing. But the food is great.

We can't say enough about the help we got from the Apple representative at the Sandos Caracol Ecos resort. Allejandra couldn't have been more helpful. Every single request or concern we had she took care of immediately. Our final dinner was exquisite. She set up a private dinner with one of the restaurants. Because of her service and pleasant attitude, we would definitely consider working with Apple for another vacation. The transfers or seamless, and the resort was perfect for our family.

I would like to start by saying that the Apple team was very helpful and professional. Whe we arrived at our hotel, the room we were given did not have the King bed we had paid for and chosen. We were promptly moved into a room with a king bed. Unfortunately that rooms sliding door was broken. It had a large gap on the sidecar that didn't move. Because there were storms, we had water coming in and had difficulty sleeping due to the noise. It took several requests to get someone there to repair the door. It wasn't till day 3 that it was repaired. As a matter of fact it frequently took several requests to obtain sometas simple as orange juice. When we went to visit the Apple desk to arrange our transport back, the roof was leaking quite a bit. I felt terrible for the representative. Despite these problems we did enjoy the resort. The entertainment was wonderful and the food was good. I hope this review helps to improve some of the problems we experienced. Thank you Diana and Michael

Upon check in, we were NOT informed of the hours of the restuarants, how to make reservations for the restuarants, how to find them or any information on the resort, a general overview or anything. We sis check in late but no matter what time, we should be informed upon check in. We missed out on several opprotunities do do the eco tours and activities because we did not know where the booth was. Were unsatisfactory check in experience

Visited in Jan 2018 and was disappointed. Cigarette butts everywhere, only one bar tender on the entire resort could make a drink that didn’t taste like gasoline, and couldn’t get money exchanged because they were having “banking” troubles.

Get to your room ASAP. Then come back to Lobby for sales pitch

Kid friendly place with decent food options. The Mex Food restaurant, Las Mascaras, always tasty. Towel service a little choppy so get towels early. Beach is pretty but not really for swimming do to rock formations in the water. Sunday is a must when the center Palapa turns into an entertainment spot with many, many Mexican style stands with traditional foods! Really quite nice. Take the time share tour if you want to score a Royal Elite experience; worth it.

The service at this resort is top notch. Everyone works very hard to make sure you are happy and have everything that you need. I will say though that I was impressed most with their maintenance staff. I understand that this is their slow period and they are working on refreshing everything to be ready for the busy season coming up in just a couple months so they had people on site painting the exteriors of the units. They did a good job staying out of everyone's way and keeping everything clean while they worked. I am most impressed with one maintenance worker though, on our first night at the resort we discovered that the bed squeaked every time you moved on it, sat on it, or even breathed while you were on it. We called the front desk and they sent a man up to fix it for us. He showed up about 15 minutes later armed with only a roll of scotch tape and a toilet handle. To my surprise, after about 10 minutes of him working under the bed, he emerged and declared the squeak repaired, and even more surprising was the fact that the squeak was repaired, with nothing more than a toilet handle and a roll of scotch tape. Do not get me wrong, they resort is top notch and do not cut corners, I am just impressed by how quick they are to address any concern you have, and that they do not stop until you are satisfied. The entire staff at the resort is dedicated to ensuring you have a good time, we even had them set up transportation for us to and from the airport, that was such a relief! I also like that it is an eco-resort, meaning that they work hard to make as little a foot print on the ecosystem as possible. This includes dry urinals, push button faucets, open air restaurants and facilities to use less electricity. You are also pretty much in the jungle so you get to see all kinds of natural aspects of the ecosystem such as coatis, iguanas, and monkeys. The facility is nice but not uppity, they have plenty for families to do together, but also have an adults only part for a romantic couple's get away. Overall I am very pleased with our stay there and I am fairly confident anyone with a sense of (mild) adventure wanting a relaxing stay in an unforgettable setting will enjoy this resort as well.

A nightmare !!!

I was very excited to go to this hotel because my companion went there 4 years ago and told me that it was a "Paradise". The site is beautiful ... you are in the jungle with animals, it is amazing ... The food is very good and the staff at the restaurant very friendly. But ... you have the Reception Staff who are not at "Guest service". Don't forget, I am the guest and I paid for a service and you are not able to give it. And when they have something to say, they block your room ... you are obliged to go to the reception. I am sorry ... I am not in jail, I am on holidays. Or they call you at 9:00 AM to see you because there is a problem ... No, you don't wake me up at that time, I am on holidays, I am the guest and not your prisoner. If you want a coffee with warm milk at 9:00 PM at the lobby ... No !!! We just washed the machine ... But a tequila at 6:00 AM ... no problem !!! It sucks and you have to manage with drunk people all day long. One day, you can take a coffee at the Fitness room and the day after, not ... Why ??? You are in all-in but the "mini-bar" is not refilled every day ???!!!! When it is raining, a part of the main restaurant is transformed into a swimming pool. The toilets of the "Aqua-park" remained clogged for 2 days ... Disgusting. One evening, no more water to take a shower, I tried to call the Reception ... 50 rings later, no answer !!! It is the first time that I have such a bad experience for my holidays. Never again.

Loved it!

I love this resort and would stay here every single time if it were up to me! We stayed in the privilege adults only section and it was worth the upgrade. There is a pool and restaurant next to it for privilege members and it was nice to see that it was enforced. There was drink service around the pool which was awesome. We spent most of our time here rather than the beach. We tried most of the restaurants (except Mexican) and our favourites were the steak house (get there early!) and the Brazilian. We loved snorkeling in the cenote and the jade river experience, we didn't try the romantic boat ride. Maybe next time. We caught a couple of the mayan shows but I really didn't enjoy them, way too crowded for me with not enough seating and the smoke kept blowing back into my face. Neat to see once but next time I wouldn't bother and we didn't bother finishing out the series of them that were spread out over a few evenings. We had a fruit basket in our room on arrival and spent our evenings before dinner on our balcony feeding the coati and the monkeys would come down from the trees and sit on our balcony railing as long as we kept the banana slices coming, one evening three of them spent 15 minutes with us. The highlight of my trip! So many wonderful things about the resort. A few negatives (for us anyway)... we lost water in the middle of the night one night, it did come back on by morning. We found the walk to the beach was long and for a resort that size there should be more than one way to access the beach. Line up in the lobby for money exchange took a long time and when it was my turn they didn't have any so I wasn't able to exchange money. Went later and it was fine. Although the separate privilege check in was nice, the "very welcoming and helpful" staff member that guided us around upon arrival was actually someone pressuring us to sign up for a special breakfast the next day (timeshare!) and kept chucking the promise of credits and free gifts at us whenever we tried to say no thanks, so we signed up so he'd leave us alone and then turned our phones off the next morning and went about our day and didn't show up to the breakfast. Overall this all seemed small compared to the positives. We travel a fair bit and like to try different destinations and resorts as we're curious about the options so finding a resort we would be happy to travel to and stay at for every single vacation is saying a lot.
