Definitely worth a return trip (or two, or three or...)!

Everything about our experience was marvelous. The moment we stepped off the transfer bus at the hotel we were greeted by smiling staff eager to assist us. We were ushered directly to concierge and checked in while another guest service member went to get drinks for us. The staff throughout the resort were fantastic. I have never seen such amazing hospitality. The biggest win for me was the food and restaurant services. I have food allergies and the staff made it so simple and accommodating for me to know what foods were available to me at each restaurant. I even received a card with my allergies written in Spanish so staff could understand. My boyfriend and I went without the kids and were able to enjoy our time as a couple. While we were there though, we were able to see all of the offerings for children and hope to bring our kids back with us someday. We felt 100% safe at the resort and there was no question that all staff members were committed to service and excellence. If I haven't said it enough, I HIGHLY recommend this resort!

This is great hotel, the jungle grown up around the hotel has Monkeys, Peacocks, racoons and other animals. the staff is very friendly. The restaurants have good food, the one in royal elite area is good but long wait to get in most nights. Beach was simple but nice, Adults only are was great. grounds are best, pools, jungle, cenote on the grounds to snorkel in, Segway tours, bikes, Good drinks and large comfortable rooms

We had a bad experience with running water the first night and a lack of electricity the last night. These minor inconveniences have to be weighed against the 20 monkeys we could see from our balcony, the value of the Dia Del Muertos Celebration, the spa and other hotel elements. Overall, I'd recommend the hotel despite our issues.

This hotel only had AC in the rooms. The restaurants, theater, game areas only had ceiling fans. That’s a problem especially when you go in July. The beach area was not very swimmable because it was full of rocks, Moss & a lot of seaweed. Also the rooms had a terrible musty smell, that stunk up all our clothes & bags. We went for the day to Sandos Playacar & that was so much nicer. The water park for kids was nice, but that was about it.

This resort, with it's eco-friendly feel and cultural immersion opportunities, was the perfect resort for our family. We have kids (ages 3 and 6 years old) and they had a blast. I loved feeling immersed in the jungle, the food was great, the staff was SO FRIENDLY and there were so many things to do. I was impressed with how much was included in our stay. It was excellent!

The only thing I would say could be better is the food selection. I would suggest maybe French fries, chicken nuggets, and other foods that would be more appealing to kids. The hotel was very clean not out dated like other reviews suggested. Staff was very friendly. Shout out to Jesus at the front desk for getting us into a room when our room wasn’t ready. I recommend this resort to anyone with small children. Also, this hotel is extremely safe and in a gated area for extra safety :) sandos caracol is worth trying out

Long story short, we were less than impressed. First, when we got there, there was a huge line at the registration desk, having us wait 20 minutes to check in. The people at the front desk never seemed happy or that they wanted to help. There was no explanation of where things were, what meals were served at what restaurants, or what times meals were served. We were not given a map of the resort so we had to find our way around ourselves. Our room smelt beyond musty, the worst I'd ever smelt. There were tiny ants all over our counters and tables all week long. They had this strict towel rule that you were given a card when checking in, exchange the towel at the one and only towel stand, if you lose your towel or card, $50 will be charged to your room. The towel stand closed down at 5pm so by the time we checked in and got down to the beach, we were unable to get towels. The food was mediocre at almost every restaurants. There was only about 2-3 meals that we were happy with. There was several times that they were out of regular Coke and the buffets weren't always well stocked (food seemed to run out quickly). I felt that most of the staff we interacted with seemed to hate their job and did not want to talk to you or try to help. About half way through the week, one of the concierge staff found me on the beach and gave me a tiny piece of paper that had all the restaurants and times open listed on it. The second night, when we got back to our room, the cleaning lady left us a book about the resort that included a map and other information. These things would've been nice to get at check in. The beach was very rocky, which I understand is in the hands of mother nature with the high tides and such, but it wasn't very inviting for bare feet; especially for children. The mosquitoes were beyond terrible, but again, out of the control of the resort, I would think. There were shows every night that were very family friendly, however, you had to find a seat 30-60 minutes before the show started to get a seat at all to be able to watch the show. The resort was big, and almost too big for all that they had to offer. I say that because everywhere you wanted to go was an easy 5-10 minute walk. That's a lot for kids in my opinion. There was several times that my son became bored with the lack of things going on. Everything we did or wanted to do, there was a long wait to be able to do it (snorkeling, kayaking, etc.) I also ended up getting an 80 minute massage on my birthday and I was not worth the money spent or the time. It was $175 massage and it was less than enjoyable. I was told when I booked it that I was to get a special gift being it was indeed on my birthday. That which I had to ask for and the receptionist knew nothing about and almost didn't want to honor that. She took one step the her left and pulled a sample pack of exfoliation scrubs out of a basket sitting on the desk and handed that to me as if I was begging for a gift. The massage itself wasn't enjoyable because I had requested a female and got a male massage therapist. Then, he coughed and sniffled and breathed heavily through the entire massage. He pushed very hard, even though I asked him twice to let up on the pressure. He bent me in ways that made me feel I was at a chiropractor's office. I was less than please when I left the spa. We spoke to some other families that had the same complaints and concerns that we did. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

The only downfall of this hotel is the restaurants are a good walk from the pool and beach. They do have cook outs on the beach some days but they need to have food closer to the beach and pool. The wild life here is amazing. The endless options that come with this hotel are great.

Best part of the whole resort was this waiter. Give her a 5 star but the resort gets a 2. Beach was small and full of seaweed and rocks. Entertainment sucked. Went to the sister hotel for the day and it was a lot better. Wouldn't recommend this resort

Jose Alejandro, Manuel and Israel were outstanding help during check in. We have been here 3 times and each time the staff has treated us well. Our family has joined us several times and we love it. Great hotel, food and activities.

Great service from those who work there but with big improvements needed!

Overall I would say a 3.5 My wife and I went there the first week of Feb so we could celebrate her birthday. It was a part of a discounted "all inclusive" 5 nights package that committed us to a sales presentation. This was not the first time we visited "La Riviera Maya" as we had previously stayed at the Barcelo Maya a couple of years earlier. Here is the good and the bad from my point of view: The good: - Great customer service from those who work there, they are very attentive to the guests' needs. I have to say they really earn their living. - The place, although not very big as some others around ("Barcelo Maya" is huge in comparison) it has all amenities, even a small water park for the kids, and that it is an eco-park with a ton of different animals freely roaming the property such as raccoons, coatis, iguanas, monkeys, turtles, etc. that makes the walking around quite unique. - The food was great. We mostly loved eating at "La Laguna" due to its International buffet and therefore its variety. We have gone to Italy in the past and have some good friends who are Italian, so the restaurant menu here did not surprise us at all, it actually disappointed us a bit. We could not get a reservation to "El Templo" for a Japanese show/meal, and loved the menu at Fogo do Brazil with Brazilian a la carte, we ate there the day we arrived and it was magnificent. When we went, during the first week of Feb, Las Mascaras, which is the Mexican buffet, was closed as it's considered low season, this was unfortunate because we thought since we're in MX its the sort of place that should be open. We completely missed El Gaucho - Steakhouse a la carte, and were highly disappointed at the wait times to get into "La Riviera", the Mediterranean a la carte, it took us over 1 hr of waiting to get in and about another 45+ min for us to order and get our meal, we missed a show because of that, very poorly organized/coordinated to get there as reservations are also not possible. - Their cenote is a highlight, swimming there was great. The water temperature is excellent and the water is so clear - We also enjoyed using the SPA pools, this should be something included automatically for all visitors, I don't know if it is but during the "sales" pitch it was not an "inclusive" thing in all their sales packages, it should be -- that is access to the pools, steam room, gym, etc. The bad: - Prices: if you are in an all-inclusive deal, buy nothing there; even the tours, get them all before you go there as their prices are higher than the competition. Everything is super expensive. We needed suntan lotion and it cost twice as much as what we pay in the US, and that was with a 30% discount, which is nothing of a discount, over $15 for a small bottle; everything is around double the price, quite ridiculous. So, learn the lesson today: Take all you need before you go there, and if you need something try to buy it in a supermarket outside of the resort if you can instead of at the resort's exorbitant prices. This could eventually become the biggest detractor for future visitors and a quick loss of revenue as tourists explore locations where cost for essentials and souvenirs will be lower, it did not use to be this bad. - There is no free transport from the resort Lobby to the outside gate (near the main road). The distance is roughly 1+ mile, my wife and I walked it one morning, but the only current option is to take a taxi and that will cost about $5 each way (just to the front gate by the main road). If you want to take the public transport (los colectivos / small vans ), you can only get to them by walking this distance or paying for that taxi fare, which really is a big negative. The resort should provide all guests means of transport to the main gate at no cost, that is just out of the property grounds but given they are located inside of a private area leading to other resorts it's something that represents a big inconvenience if you try to head out to town and prefer other methods besides just the taxi; some other resorts in the area do it already or will take you in their golf carts to the main gate. - Signs, signs, signs... The resort has included activities with no additional fees such as its own cenote, which you can experience most days of the week, a romantic short ride on a river, snorkel on that river, bike treks, experiences to interact with animals for the kids, a learning exploration in some Mayan ruins located inside the grounds, teaching about Mayan culture, etc. We did the romantic river ride but while looking for it we passed it, there was a sign saying in which direction to go, but nothing posted where it was located, thereby not obvious, we walked and passed it without noticing, and most employees we found in the way did not have a clue where it was. So, signage review is a necessity. - Consider special occasions and make them memorable. They knew the whole time I was taking my wife for her birthday, so they can go a bit further. When you go on a cruise, or go to some other "all-inclusive" resorts, that special day is celebrated (they mention the person's name in some shows, leave a little something in the room, provide a special/memorable meal, etc) -- they did nothing! Of course, I did my best to ensure that through the whole trip everything we were doing was to celebrate her birthday, however the hotel could have put a bit more effort, add something little but special. This is enormously appreciated by guests who go there to celebrate special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, something special). Make the day memorable and unique! - The sales presentation started bad with the scheduling and signing of papers. To begin with, when we met with the rep that scheduled our briefing we were told for the first time (not presented on the original document signed before our vacation as they did there) we could not take any other advertised presentation anywhere in the area during our stay where could potentially get huge discounts to tickets and other local adventures; of course given the adventure/excursion packages are very expensive if bought at the resort that presented a huge disadvantage to us (why would they care, if anything they should be competitive and present guests with the best possible deals, that is how you attract more guests to a place). This was a huge deterrent and a big disappointment as with that, we excluded any major potential savings, their "clauses" made no sense since that is not what would make them lose a potential "timeshare" target buyer, the clause does. With that, we lost any interest/attention span into the sales pitch from the very beginning; by the time we go to the presentation, which BTW lasted 4.5 hrs! we were already turned off - nothing wrong with the presenter, who was kind and presented an understanding ear to what we had to say - needless to say we had no interest in whatever they had to offer since that very first day as we lost a chance to any potential great deals.

YAAAS!

We stayed for 10 days in February and had a great time. We stayed in the Royal Elite section just by the Royal Elite pool and that worked really well for us as we could run to the room quickly whenever we needed something. The beach is very rocky so we mostly stuck to the pools. Overall the staff is very helpful. We had pedicures done at the spa by Alejandra and Ana and they were great and friendly. At the Royal Elite bar Guadeloupe and Roberi were so fun and provided wonderful service. The Super Hero show, the Michael Jackson show and the Disney show were all fun. The water park was great for the kids. The kids club had so many activities such as cookie and candy making, hampster balls in the pool, t-shirt painting and they got to be in a show at night! The resort is huge and has lots of space to explore. Lots of free activities as well. The Royal Elite rooms are good, but the bed was a little firm for my liking and there really should be a door to separate the bedroom from the rest of the suite. The number of times we were approached about spa services was excessive. They were coming around way too much. I strongly suggest they stop that as people were getting very tired of it. The food was good, not fantastic. The buffet is always solid. The service at the a la cartel restaurants was hit and miss in the evenings as service sometimes took a long time and they ran out of some items. Overall we had a great time and are considering returning!
