My girlfriend and I stayed at the Sandos for five days in early February for my 40th. The property was very nice, clean and the service was outstanding. I see a lot of people crying about a few items such as the food and cleanliness. The buffet (Zango) was ok for dinner, only went there the first night, but was more than adequate in the morning especially when considering the omelette station and the fresh fruit...it's a buffet for goodness sakes. The Japanese Steakhouse experience was fun and pretty tasty. Season's, the fine dining restaurant, went there twice was pretty good. Get the Filet and the Tuna Tartare (app). For lunch the fish tacos and the guac & pico were bangin'. Ceviche was delectable, I want it right now. Pizza was good too.
The beach was very clean, pools were attractive, towel service was solid. The views and weather were perfect. The room was well-above average, clean, very functional bathroom and shower, tile everywhere. The floors in the room were also tiled too which makes since considering the weather (cool floors on hot feet) and ease of cleaning. Turn down service in the evening. Well-stocked fridge, though we had to call a couple of times for additional waters...no worries johnny-on-the-spot with them. Check out the pillow menu. Nice touch. The furniture was a little dated with some wear and tear, but not a big deal. Room was not ocean front, but we could see it and the window opens up to allow for an awesome breeze. Wifi worked fine. Could never get the TV on, but did not miss it. I'm sure I wasn't doing something correctly
The service was super. Esteban held it down on the beach with food, many drinks and cervezas. Get the iceberg and/or the frozen mojito He always had a smile on his face and really added to the experience. He'll probably run the place one day. Jaun was great at the Trop and Martin was very helpful as our concierge.
I guess I'm pretty simple or we just got a really good deal where we weren't expecting the the most extravagant stay in our lives. It ain't the Ritz as many have pointed out and I may somewhat agree that calling it a "luxury experience" is a bit of a stretch, but we had a really enjoyable time and would definitely go back.

Because we visited in low season not all the restaurants were open. However, the Gajin teppen experience was great. The drinks were good. I enjoyed the room very much. I liked the pool area very much. I really enjoyed the food here. The entertainment was a little lackluster but we had fun with other guests. The hotel has an intimate feel and I would certainly return. Be careful of interior doors in your room locking;-) I was locked out of my bedroom area and had to find assistance to be let into my bedroom.

My friend and I came here after reading many positive reviews including a good one on Travel & Leisure. While we still have 3 more days to discover what everyone else raves about, I cannot help but feel that I'm missing something. Here's why:
I never got a rose, warm towel or champagne at checkin not that it really matters if everything else is smooth which it really wasn't. When I got to my room it was a major disappointment. The place was filthy. You could literally see a pink slim on the wall in the bathroom and on the counter. The furniture was pretty nicked up too. I went down and tried to change rooms and was told they were full despite having watched someone else get a different room moments before. The clerk wanted to see what I deemed unclean which isn't the point in a typical 5 star environment. When I offered to pay for an upgrade I was told a room would be available the following day.
When my friend and I checked on Monday the room didn't exist and they asked who I talked to. When I produced a name they said she was new and wrong.
The food was horrible which many other reviewers have commented on so there is no need to pound on. Stick with the advice given by the NJ reviewer who said stay with the fish tacos and guac at the pool or a pizza. We solved the food problem by enjoying fabulous meals elsewhere.
The service was closer to 4 star but works best if you go with the reviewer who said bring a $100 and tip.
The best part of our trip so far was the spa and breakfast at the nearby ritz which is indeed a 5 star property and where I will stay next time. If there is a next time in cancun.
Not a luxury experience

The staff is friendly and helpful. Generous with the drinks by the pool or on the beach. Our room was not super clean, mold in the bathroom and the shower door had years of hard water stains on it. Hotel did have a maid work on the mold but she was unable to do anything on the water stains. The door in the bathroom had massive rot and a times there was a sewer smell. My biggest gripe was the food - there is I no way you could stretch this and call it gourmet. We solved that problem by eating out however be warned if you are really expecting gourmet all inclusive.
