Celebrated a 10 year anniversary here. Everything is beautiful and well-kept. Loved it so much, we added another night to our stay. Sandy the concierge arranged for our flights to be changed and handled everything. We stayed in a Monarch villa with panoramic views. The garden and atmosphere were so private, yet not detached from the resort amenities. The beach is kept clean of seaweed by a crew that works several times a day. The grounds were breathtaking and meticulously kept. Our butler Miguel made sure we were well taken care of. The pool bar is lots of fun. The staff exhibits lots positive energy and appear to love what they do. On-premises vehicle rental was effortless. We rented a new Ford Explorer for a couple days and went into the city. Lots of shopping and easy to navigate. We always felt safe in the downtown area. We also booked a snorkeling excursion from the hotel lobby. It was a great time and a lot of fun. We're already planning our next trip back!

We booked an ocean view villa and requested it not be adjoining... we got a villa that needed a lot of repair (e.g. curtains ripped down, AC leaking on the floor all the time in the central hallway), we had a view of the ocean... as well as all the delivery trucks and vendors-not private or relaxing; and could hear the adjoining room's conversation! They had nothing else until the next day. Then we chose a room that was on the third floor, had to take the stairs because the elevator was broken; because it had a hot tub (which I thought might negate the back pain from taking the stairs on my bad back)....only to find out it did not work either! They ran out of bath towels mid week. BTW, the photos they show of lobster on a buffet... Ha ha! We were told it was extra-after we got there. They tried to get us to sign a waiver too-for no good reason. A bit shady? We would not go back! Definitely not as advertised. Go to The Level and really get pampered. Beautiful resort, fantastic staff, fabulous food.

My husband and I stayed for a week at the Sanctuary in mid August 2017. It was our first time in Punta Cana. Punta Cana is not a town, but a section of the eastern part of the Dominican Republic that is home to several resorts. The Sanctuary is an Alsol property. It is well maintained and consists of several buildings and room options. We stayed in a junior suite in "the Castle." The staff at the Sanctuary are very friendly and made us feel welcome. Our butler, Santos, was extremely helpful and very gracious. Our room was spacious and faced the beach. Quite nice, actually. The Sanctuary is an adults-only all inclusive resort. There are several bars, pools, and restaurants on the grounds, as well as private beaches. One thing to be aware of is the Sargassum seaweed. This is a brownish algae that has been proliferating in the Caribbean, partly as a result of global warming and pollution. It washes up on the shores and in addition to being unsightly, it produces a very unpleasant odor when it decays on the shore. The smell is similar to sewage and we noticed it immediately when we arrived. It is not something that the resort can remedy, it is a widespread environmental issue. I am uncertain if it is worse at certain times of the year, but in mid August, it was very significant. If you are looking for excursions, there is an agent with a company called Triple Tree Tours in the lobby of the main building. There are several excursion packages available for an additional cost. We decided to do a horseback riding excursion that was recommended to us by the agent. This excursion was different than the one advertised in the resort's brochure. When we did the excursion, we felt badly because the horses seemed underweight, but we were judging them by our standards. We also did the Playa Juanillo VIP excursion, which was a full day of sailing, snorkeling, beach time and a trip to the Hoya Azul, a natural swimming hole formed by a geological "sinkhole" of sorts. It was some of the bluest water I had ever seen. The food at the Sanctuary was the one drawback. We thought that it was very mediocre. The best meal of the day was breakfast at the Casa Bella. But other than that, the other restaurants were not that great. Moreover, not all of them were open every day. There is 24 hour room service, but other than breakfast fare, the food was nothing special from room service, either. Be aware that there is no real town in Punta Cana, so there really isn't anywhere you can go that is close by in case you grow tired of being on the resort. We saw a shopping mall called the "Blue Mall" near the airport, but it looked like parts of it were still under construction. There is a section of the resort called "sanctuary Town" which has some restaurants and shops, most of which open at 6 PM. The spa is the The Castle and has a full line of services, to include massages and use of their private pool. We had massages and facials, and I would highly recommend taking a spa day. Some additional thoughts: If you are visiting from the USA, bring lots of singles with you (we brought about $100 in singles) for tipping the staff at the restaurants, bars, etc. American dollars are accepted by the staff there. There are no ATMs on the resort, but if you need American currency, you can use your credit card or debit card at the front desk to get a cash advance. Bring plenty of sunscreen and insect repellant. When we went, the mosquitos were out in full force, especially at night. Also-- Please learn some Spanish before going! You are in a Spanish speaking country and I think that it is courteous to learn some phrases in Spanish in order to carry on even minimal conversation with staff. Even if your Spanish is not perfect, the staff will appreciate your efforts to communicate in their language. Do not assume that all the staff will be as fluent in English as you want them to be. Overall, our time at The Sanctuary was memorable and if you choose this property, I think your time will be enjoyable as well.

We recently returned from yet another 21 night multi-resort trip where we stayed at 10 nights at Excellence El Carmen followed by 11 nights at our favourite property on the island, Sanctuary Cap Cana This was our 41st trip to the Caribbean and our 18th trip to Dominican Republic. This was our ninth stay at Sanctuary since we first discovered it way back in 2010. We have been lucky enough to have stayed in many, many properties all over the world so we like to think we are a fairly good judge of standards with regards to the hospitality and travel industry One of the many reasons we keep on returning to Sanctuary is because of its location in Cap Cana as it is away from the hustle and bustle of the main hotel zone with all its motorised water sports and tourist excursions. Cap Cana is not an area which will appeal to everyone as some will find it a little too quiet. However, we love the solitude and up market feel which it offers as well as its beautiful beach Our transfer from Excellence El Carmen which is situated in the Uvero Alto area was trouble free and took around 45 minutes. After checking in at the Villa Lounge we were able to enjoy a late lunch of one of our favourite dishes, boca chica in the Blue Marlin After a very enjoyable lunch which was punctuated with numerous hugs and welcome home greetings from several staff we have got to know over the years we returned back to our villa to get settled in for our 11 night stay 13th – 25th July OK if I may I will break this review up into different sections and cover off each item in turn Villa As always we adored our stay in our Oceanfront Royalty Villa which on this occasion was #1026. It was really nice to be allocated this villa as it is the villa we stayed in during our first two trips and we have very fond memories of those early stays when we first fell in love with the property Unlike #1006 & #1007 it does not have a glass walled lounge area and the whole villa sits under one roof as opposed to being in two separate wings with an al fresco dining area dividing them. The villa is situated on the rocky oceanfront between the Blue Marlin and the Castle and is very convenient for everything. The entrance door to the villa is set back in a little private courtyard and as you enter the villa you come into a large dining / lounge area with the master bedroom and bathroom to the right and the guest bedroom and bathroom to the left As with the other villas and suites it has undergone a major facelift and the new furnishings are very nice indeed. We really liked the layout and flow of the villa and in many ways it is our favourite. As with the other Royalty Villas it has a huge, well-furnished deck area and as you will see from the photos one of the great plus points is that it has an extensive covered area which is very handy if you want some shade or to shelter from the occasional rain shower The only slight downside to the villa is that the view is not as nice as in #1006 & #1007 but the layout and practicality of it more than makes up for this; we felt it was more homely Having stayed a multitude of times we are very much in tune with the pace of the property and are more than happy to maximise the use of our villa so we spend most days on our deck area just popping out for a meal or a stroll. We are happy for the staff who service the villa to call in at their own time schedule when they need to clean the rooms (thanks Nancy) or to service the mini bar and we have no issues with the interruptions as the staff are so pleasant and polite. I must say it all runs like clockwork. It works well for us but may not suit all as some guests will perhaps not like staff servicing their villa when they are relaxing on a lounger on their deck area Words cannot really do justice to these villas so please feel free to check out my photos Beach As with our other recent stays at Sanctuary the beach was mostly in really good condition during out stay. The weed / saragassum that had very much plagued our stay whilst at Excellence El Carmen was much less evident at Cap Cana and the majority of what was around was deflected by the nets they have deployed. Any that did come ashore on the main beach cove was quickly gathered up by the beach clean-up crew During our stay they erected two “to rent” beach bali beds and they looked really attractive. We were lucky enough to test one for the day to provide feedback on the set up and service and personally I think they will be a great success – again feel free to check out my photo albums Food Overall we thought the food was very good indeed and again we saw some changes to the menus and the way they present certain dishes. Argimiro Pena the F&B Manager is still in situ but is now supported by yet another new Executive Chef who is from the Dominican Republic For the majority of our breakfasts we ate on the Terrace at the Casa Bella and as we normally like to eat something light, we have always found the buffet breakfast there to be more than adequate for our needs, even though there is an extensive range of hot dishes and food to order. On a couple of days they ran out of certain items which seemed a little odd to us as they were fairly basic fair – fresh orange juice and yoghurt. But if the delivery van doesn’t arrive what can you do? On two mornings for a change we had breakfast on the deck of our villa. First time it was really good but on the second morning it was very disappointing and they were very apologetic once they received they feedback For lunch you have the option of either an a la carte menu in the Blue Marlin or an extensive buffet in the Casa Bella again with some meat and fish dishes cooked to order. On this trip we found the buffet in the Casa Bella to be some of the best we have experienced over the years. They have a different theme most days but unfortunately this is not advertised anywhere which is rather remiss. We have made them aware of this as I am sure more people would have dined there on certain days had they known what was on offer The Blue Marlin was as good as ever with one or two new dishes on the lunchtime menu and a few twists as well – one of the great things we love about dining in there are the breath taking views of the ocean and the relaxed feel it has For those who just want to have a snack or cannot be bothered getting dressed or slipping on a cover over there is always the option of the La Yola. This is a grill station on the beach where the options include various grilled dishes such as chicken, beef burgers, fish, salads etc As with our last trip some of the best lunches we had were courtesy of room service where Yudelka, the Room Service Manager and her team have raised standards to a whole new level. Each and every lunch was perfect and it was always a pleasure to talk with Juan or Francisco whilst they were delivering and serving our order. The success to any room service delivery lies with the order taker at the end of the phone getting the order correct to start with and here they do just that. In the evenings with it being out of season and so due to slightly lower than normal occupancy some of the main restaurants such as the WOK, Capriccio, Steakhouse or Blue Marlin were on occasions. However, you always had the choice of at least two restaurants plus those in Sanctuary Town – Fusion, Mamma’s Forno & Pasta and the Burger Factory all of which are included in the All Inclusive Package On this trip we ate in the WOK on three occasions and in fact had our last dinner there as we really enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Although we had a not such a good meal the first time we ate in the Steakhouse, the other two meals we had there were very good indeed. Our meal in the Capriccio was very enjoyable as not only was the food very good but it had a great atmosphere. Fusion, well what can I say; it was as spectacular as the first time we dined there on our last trip. Most of the guests were part of a wedding party and at times things were louder and riske than normal with the Fusion crew playing up to the antics of the group Although we had a couple of great meals in the Blue Marlin in the evening we found the revised menu to be a little too restrictive if you are not a lover of fish or seafood Entertainment During our stay the weekly evening entertainment schedule was Thursday = Karaoke Night Friday = Dominican Night Saturday = White Beach Party Sunday = V J Party Monday = Live Music Tuesday = Brazilian Show Wednesday = Circus Show Thursday = Karaoke Night & Live Sax Music Friday = Dominican Night Saturday = Rock & Roll Party Sunday = V J Party The entertainment takes place either at Sanctuary Town, on Main Terrace, in the Love Bar or on the terrace between the Love Bar and the Steakhouse Prior to our stay we did read some comments about the main pool being noisy but as with other trips we did not witness this. The only times they do crank up the music is for the pool aerobics around midday and for the weekly foam party. Apart from that we found the music level to be very much in keeping with the overall ambiance of the property Spa & Gym One afternoon we had a very enjoyable trip to the spa where we had an abridged version of the hydrotherapy circuit followed by a couples massage As part of their expansion plans next year to cope with the additional guest numbers they will be enlarging the spa and moving the gym to a higher floor where it will be much larger As the days rolled by on this trip it just confirmed to us that Sanctuary Cap Cana is still our overall favourite property on the island. Never before have we returned to a property so many times and the fact they we have done so is amazing in itself as we have seen it being managed by three different management groups. Many of the staff have been at the property for many years and are a testament to the ongoing success of the property. As I have said many times before it is just so different to the majority of the other properties we have stayed at and certainly those in the Dominican Republic Over the years since we started coming here it has certainly changed for the better with nets being deployed to try to curtail the amount of weed / saragassum that comes ashore, the major beach cove improvements, refurbishment of the suites / villas, the addition of the new Ocean Bar and of course the building of Sanctuary Town Our only fear going forward is that when they expand next year to add on an additional 167 rooms (bringing the total number of rooms to 344) that this may alter the feel of the property and that it could lose its unique character. I think that the other enhancements which will be done at the same time as the closure (1st May – 31st August) such as a new spectacular pool, a larger fitness centre, a lobby décor revamp, an update on all the restaurants and bars improving on their already excellent gastronomic experience are all needed and will be welcomed A big thank you to all of the team that looked after us so well, in particular Lucia who has now received another well-deserved promotion to Resident Manager where over the next year she is going to be one very busy young lady and her role is key to the expansion project which commences next May. Thank you also to Anibal who was always around to make sure all was well with our meals. Another shout out must go to Jorge & Emilio the two butlers who were always checking to make sure all was well and to see if we needed anything or a lift anywhere As with our previous stays there were several wedding parties staying at the property so on some nights the likes of the Ocean Bar and / or one of the restaurants was closed off for private functions which was of no issue to ourselves as there was always many other areas we could enjoy. Having got to know the property very well over the years we are in no way surprised that it is has become such a popular romantic wedding venue Should you be interested in seeing some photos of the property please feel free to send me a PM and I will happily forward you a link to my photo albums Please note that some room shot photos may include some items that are either only applicable to that particular room type and / or were given to us as a surprise with us being loyal repeat guests and are not part of the standard package As always I am happy to answer any questions

My husband and I came during the low season. The resort was maybe at 40% capacity. We were offered an amazing deal to upgrade to the oceanfront Royal Villa. It was beautiful and totally worth it. Service was amazing! Thanks Miguel, Jasmine, and the guys at the swim up bar for making this our best vacation ever! I found this resort on Trip Advisor. After reading some of the other reviews, let me just say I never had an issue with the mosquitoes. I had a few bites over the course of the week and never used the bug spray I brought with me. I'm from SC and the mosquitoes normally tear me up. The temperature in our room was always comfortable. The resort wasn't at capacity, but there was always plenty to do. There was a ton of seaweed on the beach, but staff was always outside raking it up from sun up to sun down. After getting bit by one of the sand fleas, I pretty much hung out by the main pool. It has a swim up bar and it was the place to be anyway. Food was decent. And let me say it again. Service was the absolute best. I love traveling and don't consider myself a person that wants to repeat any vacations, but I would absolutely stay here again. We didn't want to leave. Thanks Sanctuary staff for an unforgettable vacation!
