Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

very nice

We stayed here two different times in a week. The resort is beautiful and the rooms very clean. There is a luau on the premises, and a little beach. Plus a great place to watch a sunset. The first stay was in the buliding closest to the little beach. The only problem we had was when the ac would kick on and it was like an artic blast. We tried to change the temperature, no help, you would be too cold when it was on and than too hot when it kicked off. It was a miserable night sleeping. Our second stay was fine no problems! The hotel could use a hot tub but other than that it's worth the stay. More>

Location and grounds over service and rooms

The hotel grounds are amazing, great landscaping, nice private lagoon, there is no white sandy public beach but the hotel has nicely landscaped a private sandy beach area for guests as part of its private lagoon. The lagoon is surrounded by the natural lava rock. You will find many of the beaches in Kona are quite rocky due to the lava rock, there are some sandy spots but nothing like Maui. It is a good idea to bring your own lawn chair to any of the public beaches. There are free beach lounge chairs at the resort to use but it is quite small so go early to claim your spot. There is great snorkelling in the lagoon, we saw tones of fish, a turtle, an eel and lots of crabs. The staff at the resort do not go out of their way. In particular I found the front desk staff a little abrasive and not very accommodating. The one staff member David who checked us in was the only one who really made an effort to make our stay enjoyable. The bar for happy hour is amazing but again the service is not very good. Service is often slow and the drinks were so strong I could barley drink mine. I wanted to ask for an extra glass with juice so I could re-mix my Mai Tai but no one came to check on us until it was time to go. The rooms are in need of several touch ups and renovations. We actually stayed in two different rooms because our booking was accidentally made (our fault) for 3 nights but we had meant to stay 4. Upon check in David was very helpful and told us that there was still 172 rooms free so we would have no problem booking for our forth night but that it would be cheaper to book online. So we did book our 4th night online. However, instead of keeping us in our same room even though they were not at full occupancy we had to check out of the building we were in and move to a different building. They said that we had not booked ocean view for our 4th night so we packed up and moved to the other building where the room was exactly the same! Now given the fact that yes it was our fault for booking the incorrect number of nights, but surely the resort which in not at full capacity could have kept us in the same room or moved us to a different floor in the same building but it was quite the hassle to move on that 4th night. In the end, the room was exactly the same as our first room with a partial ocean view. Go figure! The buildings definitely have seen the age take their toll. The carpets are dirty, some washroom fixture are rusty and the beds a little worn in. The location and the grounds actually make up for the mediocre rooms. If only the front desk and bar staff had been a little more attentive and accommodating I would have rated it a 3.5 maybe even a 4 but I think it is a solid 3 star resort. Location is great and very close to several restaurants, shops, farmers markets, the dive center and the main street in Kona. Hence, location and grounds over the quality of service and rooms. More>

Average hotel with friendly staff and excellent location but shabby facilities and poor restaurant

I stayed there on 4/30/16 and 5/6/16 as part of a bike tour. I had my own room. The room was decent sized and the staff was friendly. But the quality of furnishings and facilities were like a Best Western. I had Tuna poke at Don the Beachcomber restaurant and it was simply terrible, just cut up pieces of tuna with slices of avocado on a bed of coleslaw without spices in any of it. It was just tasteless and not worth the $16. More>

This resort sits on the waters edge. The room we had 553 was ocean front the room was very spacious. The room was clean. The grounds were very nice. I do think it is wrong when you pay a lot for a room that they charge if you want WiFi. We had the breakfast bar while we were there another $20 per person which should be included with your room when you are already paying so much More>

Good value for great spot

The Royal Kona is not a top-end Kona resort, and you don't pay for that. It's slightly worn, but chalk that up to a tropical environment. It's right in Kailua town, more convenient for walking than all other options. It has the best open-air bar of any we saw on the island. The hotel has a popular luau. Having had enough luau buffets in previous trips, my wife and I were able to watch the entire show from the pool. A plus is a small tidepool on the grounds suitable for casual snorkeling. We were surprised how many fish we saw in that small pool. More>
