Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

First impressions are a big thing. The first impression was Bad,very bad. This place is really outdated and needs alot of updating. The Elevator smelled really bad,and our room was even worse. The room smelled sour and musty(i'm being nice),so i went to see if we could get another room..it smelled bad too. There is NO beach at all,but they do have a nice pool and a cool lagoon area. The bar is fine and most workers are nice. The only real thing i liked was our view from our room, great ocean view.Location is good, but if i ever come back..i would never stay here again. They need to spend alot of money and this would be a very very great motel, but until then..stay away.

For a good price, it's a great location and cute hotel (not 5 star but definitely Hawaii!)

Great family hotel, beautiful grounds for the price- LOVE the location with swimming lagoon, right next to all kinds of restaurants and little shops, great short running location. Don't expect large sandy beaches, bring your reef walkers and snorkles and expect to see some fish and turtles nearby. Not a 5 star hotel, but a good solid, cute place. We are definitely returning.

This hotel is worth the $ and on the edge of the town, so it's not noisy. Could use a new mattress, but room comfy. When I had a couple needs: table for balcony, extra pillow and towels, they were right on it. Didn't have time to check out entertainment or pool/beach, but they looked nice and our 1 meal at restaurant (breakfast) was good.

everything went fine, however Kona has a shuttle which takes people up and down the street (4-5 miles). The pick up and drop off locations are unclear is the only thing I have to report which didn't sit well with us. Otherwise the view and being on the water was great. TV was poor but the staff and everyone there were very nice and helpful - over the top.

Great location!

The worst things I can say after staying here 9 nights are the noisy luau five of those nights (we had an oceanside room which made up for that), the expensive parking and WiFi fees, and the need for refurbishment. I would seriously recommend closing a couple of floors at a time, reducing the rate for people staying in rooms on the open floors, until all three towers are refurbished. Would any of these keep me from staying here again? Absolutely not!! The maid service is superb—nothing was ever forgotten. I especially appreciated the laundry: $2.25 for wash with timer actually showing, and $2.00 for 60!! minutes of drying time. None of this having to come back, checking the time, and feeding the machine again. What a plus! The room was large, had two luggage racks, and two sink areas. The oceanside room afforded us the ability to enjoy the sound of the surf and the weather from our lanai. Definitely I would return.

Great Service

This is a very nice hotel. The location is centrally located right on the ocean. The room is comfortable and nicely appointed. The view is excellent. Staff is very helpful and anxious to help. For the location, views and hospitality the price is reasonable.

What a dump!

First off, hubby and I are not snobby when it comes to where we stay. We are perfectly comfortable in the 3 star resort we stay at every year on Maui, so we felt sure that the Royal Kona would be fine with us. Man what an expensive mistake! We booked a year in advance, splurged on a corner ocean front king room. They stuck us in the lagoon tower directly overlooking the luau area on one side, but facing the ocean. That was not too bad but we were not thrilled to be overlooking the luau (turned out not to be too bad). The lanai is HUGE, but only had two tiny plastic chairs and a small plastic table. It was very odd. The lobby going up to the room is disgusting. The carpet is stained, the walls are actually crumbling, it’s totally filthy. The room itself was super basic, spacious, but seemed to have no room for anything - just open unused floor space. There was a big bed, with a mushy soft mattress, side tables, a dresser that barely opened with a tv on it, and an outdoor type dining table and 2 chairs. There was a tiny fridge and coffee maker with a sink outside the bathroom - mostly the coffee and supplies were never replenished and the front desk never had any so we bought our own no big deal, just wish we would have known the first night so we could have prepared. The bathroom was small and looked stained and dirty though it was probably cleaned. The linens are scratchy and stained and old. Overall everything in the room appeared to have been cleaned but decades of stains and grime make it look dirty. We did complain about the room, and they offered to switch us, but not until the next day, which would have been a smaller room perhaps not ocean front. We were going to do it but decided we didn’t want to spend the first day of our short vacation touring shabby hotel rooms and moving all our things. We did consider moving to another resort (Waikoloa) for about the same price, but I was afraid there would be a big issue with getting a refund. The location is great for walking to bars and restaurants since the food is inedible at this resort. The bar was fun but the drinks were inconsistent. One mai tai was delicious another was undrinkable. The prices are full 5 star resort prices too. The food in the bar was terrible. There is no poolside service of drinks but you can’t bring your own either. The lady in the shop that sells cans of beer makes it a point to tell you that you can’t drink it anywhere but your room. The first night there we were starving and exhausted from flying and didn’t want to venture out so we tried to eat at the restaurant. We were turned away since we had no reservation, but watched from the bar as tables sat open for the couple hours we were there. Ate in the bar that evening - pricy, limited menu, had fish and chips which was fishy mushy inedible. So we never tried to eat at the resort again. The parking is absurd at $15 a day and the WiFi is redic expensive. I paid $100 for later checkout since our flight was not until 11, so we got to stay in the room until 6pm. We got caught up in watching sunset and we’re taking our last pictures at 6:02 when we heard someone in our room coming to kick us out. It was very odd. Long story short I would NEVER in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. Would never stay here again as there are many more options for the same or less money. If you do brave it do not let them put you in the lagoon tower! The pictures of the rooms I’ve seen in here that are nicer have to be if the other towers.

A great place to stay in Kona

The Royal Kona is a great place to stay. We come back every 5 years and always stay at RK. It's situated right at the end of Alii Drive and right on the coast. We eat at their restaurant, Don the Beachcomber and it's also within easy walking distance to all the other restaurants and stores in Kona. Our only complaint-and it's minor- is that we've been coming now about every 5 years and some of the carpets are in desperate need of replacement. But we love the place.

Great hotel!

Amazing hotel - clean spacious room, friendly and helpful staff. There is a luau on the grounds if you want that sort of thing.... or just enjoy the pool and the strip of sand beach onsite. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance, or you can eat at Don the Beachcomber. Be prepared for plenty of ocean noise.... lulled us to sleep every night. Best sleep I've had in years!
