Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

TripAdvisor Traveller Reviews
Great location, dated interior, gets the job done

We needed a hotel to sleep in, shower in, and store our stuff. This hotel is not the fanciest in any way, the beds are not the most comfortable, the wall outlets for charging electronics are very very limited, no bells and whistles in the rooms, but for the location and price, Royal Kona wins if you're staying on the Kona side of the island where most of the action and shops/restaurants are. The views are beautiful. We had a corner room with open balcony view of the ocean and shore. Best hotel view we have ever had in all the hotels we have visited around the world. No issues with hot water. Always had it. No issues with theft or cleanliness. I liked the set up of the hotel rooms as well. Nice and open as you made your way up to the rooms looking up at the other floors. Again, location is wonderful. Near most shops and restaurants. Very walkable. Royal Kona does NOT have its own beach FYI. Upon checking in, you got a keycard to access the guest parking lot to park your car. Finding the person to get this keycard was tricky. We had to drive up to this little kiosk in the parking lot to give them our check in receipt before we got the keycard. But by doing it this way, you risk creating traffic as your car waits right there on the main driving area as you make the exchange with the parking person for the keycard. Wish they made this process less confusing and more streamlined. We're resourceful and have traveled a lot so we figured it out but directions from the check in desk were not very clear. Hopefully this info further helps future guests. Other than that, the hotel is beautiful. Didn't eat at the restaurant on site. We just walked to other places nearby. Waves at night can be incredibly loud. And at night sometimes into 10PM you can still hear music from the restaurants down below. But this is a vacation right? Who sleeps anyway?

Great location in Kona

This resort is an older property, but kept up as well as can be expected. It is right on the water so you can expect some rust and peeling paint here and there. It is within walking distance to all the shops and restaurants on Ali'i Drive. The pace and vibe in Kona is so laid back compared to Waikiki. I love it and will be back. Mahalo!

Ocean Front Hotel

Located right on the ocean, this hotel location makes for some stunning sunsets! The grounds are boasting with beautiful flowers, trees, shrubs and streams. The open air bar and lounge facing the ocean is a great spot to meet people or just sit and relax by the ocean! Free WI-Fi available in the room should have been included in the cost of $300.00 per night rather then an additional fee for internet. This uniquely shaped hotel could use some updates to the rooms, as they are dated, but the bed was comfortable. The entire hotel needs paint and repairs and the hallways need new carpets or flooring, as the carpets are stained. Some colour in the interior hallways would be a nice touch!

The location is perfect for access to the downtown restaurants and shops. The rooms were very dated, beds were old and a bit musty but really didn't expect much more for the price. At the end day, we would stay here again. We didn't go to Kona to stay in a hotel room and it was centrally located to everywhere we wanted to go.

the price is right ,for this oldie but goodie . It isn't as fancy as some of the other island hotels but combine the price service and location and it very good deal. They offer a luau with hula dancers. The Island is beautiful and you are a short walk from stores and restaurants. If you're on a budget and want a noce place to stay try the Royal Kona. Mahalo
