Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

Lousy customer service
drmarge90, Huntington, New York
Mon Mar 27 18:34:08 EDT 2017
I could have overlooked the fact that this property is in need of an update because it has a great location right on the water and walking distance to the heart of the town. However I cannot overlook how terrible the customer service was. We were on our way from NY to Kona via Phoenix when our connecting flight was cancelled. Everyone who was to board the cancelled flight was rebooked on a 6:30 am flight the following day. This cancellation meant that we were going to miss a volcano tour we were really looking forward to. We were tired, aggravated and disappointed. I called the hotel to report our situation and to cancel that night's room. However, that's when Linda the manager told me that when we arrived the following day early after our ordeal she could not promise me that we would have a room before the 4 PM checkin time unless we paid for the room we were no longer going to need. I asked for another option under our circumstances and we were offered nothing. I especially resented the fact that she told not to raise my voice when I protested. I was left with no other choice than to pay for the unoccupied room. I found this woman's attitude offensive and inflexible.

Great Place to stay in Kona

This hotel has a Awesome bar right on the water. You can hear the waves and the sunset is AMAZING! The drinks are good, they have a happy hour around supper time. Big screen TV's and WI FI in the bar area. Now this WI FI is ONLY available free in the bar..NOT in the room, this pissed me off its annoying to have to go downstairs from your room, to use free WI FI.. or pay $30/week to use it in your room...Get with the times guys! But besides this the room we had was beautiful, i think we had the best resort Kona had to offer.

Wouldn't put a crown on it

This was the worst of all the hotels we stayed in during our recent Hawaii trip, including a bargain-basement lodge near Volcano. It's entirely because of the attitude of some of the staff. When we arrived a very nice lady (the one member of staff at this place who was genuinely kind and helpful!) told us our (business) travel agent hadn't paid all of the room costs and we had to pay the rest; she gave us our keys and told us breakfast was included. We went up to our room, I emailed the travel agent and came back down for food, to discover that the restaurant isn't open for most of the week. Next morning we had a minimal breakfast. Reasonably okay, in a fried-rice kind of a way, but I wouldn't pay serious money for it. Pity, since the morning after, we went for breakfast and they told us only one of us was allowed to eat!! Eventually they explained that apparently my travel agent had informed them that only one person is staying, so therefore person #2 no longer existed. We could pay them an extra $18, or something, magically reinstating person #2 for breakfast purposes that day. I pointed out that we had both checked in and that they'd had no problem feeding us both breakfast the previous day, so what was all that about? This caused a certain amount of dull consternation, which lasted about half an hour, by which time we had no time left for breakfast anyway. They kept talking about some fax or other, which I never actually saw, despite my suggestion that they communicate with me on my return (no, Royal Kona, this is not a plea that you bug me with it now; it's way too late for that). The following day we didn't bother with their breakfast either. Couldn't face the nuisance quotient. But that didn't stop them from attempting to charge us for three extra breakfasts on our departure! I pointed out that in three days, a total of two breakfasts had been eaten - two out of six, surely less than even they claimed had been paid. I further pointed out that it was hardly reasonable to charge us after the fact for something they'd informed us would be included! They said (rather sulkily) that we were supposed to inform them in advance if we were not going to eat there - a frankly bizarre rule!! In the end they didn't charge us for these uneaten breakfasts, but here's the thing: the nickel-and-diming that this place clearly engages in at the drop of a hat has left a really nasty taste in my mouth, souring me to this location. The wifi is outrageously expensive, the parking is not exactly cheap, the in-house restaurant is generally closed, it's not much of a resort and if our experience was anything to go by, you might get stung after the fact for services you believed were included. Once you've paid for all the extra charges they can think of, you'd be better off picking a nicer resort in the first place. Allow me to recommend the Sheraton or the Marriott Courtyard; both rather more expensive but you know what you've paid for, plus they're friendly people, so you stand a far better chance of starting and ending each day with a smile on your face. We had a minor billing problem at the Sheraton, and the difference in their treatment of us was astonishing; from sulkily and unconstructively standing around demanding that we pay pay pay pay pay like a stuck record, failing to engage, failing to solve anything, to a straightforward 'let us sort that out for you now; here's my card, I'm the manager, feel free to drop me a line any time if any more problems arise'. That, ladies and gentlemen, is called customer service. It's a good habit to get into if you expect to retain customers. Positives: the rooms are okay. Bit old, bit creaky, nothing super-special, basically one of those timeshare places (watch out for sneaky timeshare nonsense!) and if you're expecting any facilities beyond a fridge obviously this is not the place for you. There was a nice view from the lanai and it was fun to sit there and watch the sunset. The shop is actually quite nice and I got a decent swimming costume there for a fair price, so there's that. For food, go to Lava Java a little down the road; they don't have a liquor license but you can bring a bottle of wine from the ABC store if you feel so inclined. Overall, though, I can't recommend this hotel. Save yourself the anger management; there are simply far better options out there. This place should only be booked as a last resort.

You could not ask for a better location!! Walking distance to the hub of Kona. Fantastic view of the ocean, even with a partial view room. Lovely champagne welcome. Bonus, you can watch the Luau show from the pool area without paying $40/person. If that is all you are looking for, then book here! However, it IS very run down, and you will share your room with roaches. The last day of our stay we knew we would be gone for about 9 hours as we toured the island, so we turned off our air conditioning. We returned to an overwhelming smell of urine in our room! It was very late when we returned and we were checking out in the morning, so we cranked the a/c and spritzed freshener so we could sleep. We booked through Costco so when we told the management of the condition of our room they gave us free parking.

Older style resort. Spectacular views.

Stayed in March 2017. Booked this resort in an attempt to relax a little however did so much on Big Island that we barely spent any time there. We had spectacular ocean views from our room, which was a nice surprise as we did not book an ocean facing room, having said this though about 80% of the rooms in the resort have some sort of view of the ocean. Resort is located at the end of the Kona shopping strip so it is well situated for souvenir shopping and eating out. Parking was $12USD a day which was refreshing after paying $25USD a day on Oahu. The only real negative was the buffet breakfast which cost $20+USD per person per day. We found eating breakfast at the local cafes a short walk away a much cheaper option. Make sure you get to the resort bar early to get a seat for sunsets!
