Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air -- ha, in Hawaiian, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers. It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawaii, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Set oceanfront overlooking Kailua Bay in the heart of Kona town, the Royal Kona Resort is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Guests enjoy spacious guestrooms featuring a large lanai with beautiful mountain vistas or magnificent ocean views, a private saltwater swimming lagoon and sandy sunning area, oceanfront pool, tennis courts, and spa. The Resort also offers meeting facilities, a romance center, wedding services, and an oceanfront Luau. Dine at the water's edge at Don the Beachcomber signature restaurant or try one of the many unique Mai Tai creations at the adjacent Don's Mai Tai Bar.

At 390 square feet, the recently remodeled and spacious guest rooms at Royal Kona Resort are as expansive as the ocean and mountain skylines they showcase. For even grander appointments, the Corner King rooms offer 450 feet of relaxing space. At the heart of the resort is the Alii Tower, which is home to the open-air lobby, Front Desk, and Don the Beachcomber restaurant. The Lagoon Tower, on the south side of the resort, overlooks the private beach and saltwater lagoon. It also houses a beauty salon and self-service laundry. To the north, closest to Kailua-Kona, is the Bay Tower in which the massage and spa center can be found.

Designed by renowned Tiki architect George "Pete" Wimberly, the soaring, sheltering roofline of the resort's signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant perfectly sets a tropical theme. Hawaiian music wafts through the dining area, flowing past the shaded, waterside tables. Don't be surprised if you are joined for breakfast by a pod of spinner dolphins, or starting in late October, migrating humpback whales whose breathtaking aerial performances bring the whole bay to a standstill. The dining is as spectacular as the view, a fusion of Asian inspiration, European technique, and the finest, freshest local ingredients.

First impressions are a big thing. The first impression was Bad,very bad. This place is really outdated and needs alot of updating. The Elevator smelled really bad,and our room was even worse. The room smelled sour and musty(i'm being nice),so i went to see if we could get another room..it smelled bad too. There is NO beach at all,but they do have a nice pool and a cool lagoon area. The bar is fine and most workers are nice. The only real thing i liked was our view from our room, great ocean view.Location is good, but if i ever come back..i would never stay here again. They need to spend alot of money and this would be a very very great motel, but until then..stay away.

For a good price, it's a great location and cute hotel (not 5 star but definitely Hawaii!)

Great family hotel, beautiful grounds for the price- LOVE the location with swimming lagoon, right next to all kinds of restaurants and little shops, great short running location. Don't expect large sandy beaches, bring your reef walkers and snorkles and expect to see some fish and turtles nearby. Not a 5 star hotel, but a good solid, cute place. We are definitely returning.

This hotel is worth the $ and on the edge of the town, so it's not noisy. Could use a new mattress, but room comfy. When I had a couple needs: table for balcony, extra pillow and towels, they were right on it. Didn't have time to check out entertainment or pool/beach, but they looked nice and our 1 meal at restaurant (breakfast) was good.

everything went fine, however Kona has a shuttle which takes people up and down the street (4-5 miles). The pick up and drop off locations are unclear is the only thing I have to report which didn't sit well with us. Otherwise the view and being on the water was great. TV was poor but the staff and everyone there were very nice and helpful - over the top.

Friendly Staff

We had a great time at Royal Kona Resort. All the staff we came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. We especially loved the live music that they have. It’s nice to sit by the bar and be able to listen to live music and watch the waves roll in.

Dated but nice.

Just spent 8 nights at the Royal Kona Resort. While it is a bit dated the room was clean and comfortable. Staff from bartenders to house keeping was friendly and helpful. Not the same for the Diamond Resorts staff that screwed everything up with my reservation.

Just came back

Just came back today so let me start with check in the lady at the desk definitely was not friendly asked for a room upgrade told her it’s our anniversary and we were renewing our vows I think she gave us the worse room just because it was suppose to have been ocean front it was partial ocean partial the roof of the bar it rained and the balcony carpet was soaked the lights that were suppose to be on the balcony were all gone .Dont bother saying aloha or mahalo because most of the people their are not Hawaiian and barely say hello.my husband had to say to the lady at the buffet breakfast cash register that I said mahalo or good morning she was to busy getting the money to respond one person at the travel desk out of the three that say there was nice an older male with grey hair even though he doesn’t remember he talked to you the day before. The only person that was nice was the lady in the gift shop in the day time . I like to smile and speak to everyone doesn’t work here with the staff .The nice rooms which I found out later are in the bay tower and the lagoon tower which you have to be a diamond club member to get .The carpet in the room and hallways was filthy dirty .It is close to everything but it is also other hotels on the strip. That you can also stay at.The buffet food was nasty and nothing special for the price no omelet station.I must say house keeping was nice and one lady whom I wish I would have checked in with was nice. Don’t go here thinking your going to be in a friendly Hawaiian family hotel .NOPE and remember don’t bother to say mahalo they don’t respond oh and not to mention the marijuana smell in the hallways. Also the guy that works in the Expedia area to he was to busy on the phone to offer help just gave me a paper and said look at it and come back . Don’t book through him you get a better deal on the strip from the adventure booths.Kona is nice and the Vog was not bad there is no real beach at the resort you have to travel for a beach .im happy I didn’t renew my vows there my pictures would not have been much scenery.Dont pay for parking it’s always street parking even on the luau days which by the way was the only resort high light. In short go to Kona just don’t waste your money here . I read the reviews before I left said I was going to see for myself wish I would have at least listen to one of the reviews that said ask for the bay tower . I’m very upset they took my money for ocean view and knew that was not the room I had. So disappointed . Oh and the small refrigerator leaked the whole time we was there . Keep looking it’s hotels on the water and on the same strip as royal Kona at least three that I saw the Marriott is one you will see before you get to Kona . Good luck and Aloha It starts at check in the lady was miserable

We did the luau here and it was great. I have been to several and this was in the top 3. Check around the internet for discount tickets and it does sell out. Easy in and out, great food and very good entertainment.

Convenient with everything you need
