Luxury isn't worth it if all the staff are unfriendly and unhelpful!

The resort is large and sprawling, be ready to walk...a lot! It's pretty. Beautiful rooms and bedding, very luxurious. However... We booked through Funjet, as always, because $500 in resort credits were offered. Upon check in we were told that the credits were a lie and they gave us some coupons and said that it was $500 in pesos of coupons...that was the first irritation! After the check in process they gave us a map and sent us away on our own, no tour of the resort or anyone to guide us to our room, not sure where our bags were??? The room was nice, but there were windows, large, opening windows in both the shower and the toilet that looked out to a sidewalk that people were walking on, and since we were on the ground floor, the balcony above us looked directly into the toilet! All the luxury was nice, but the staff was miserable and unfriendly and unhelpful and acted like we were really putting them out with any questions or needs...no one ever offered us ANYTHING at this resort! So we packed up and left. Funjet handled getting us a room at our old faithful resort in Cancun, The Golden Parnassus, and transferring our reservations. Walked right in to Golden and were immediately smiled at and brought drinks!! That's what it's all about! The staff at Royal Hideaway should go stay at Golden and take lessons on how to be friendly and appreciative!!

What a fabulous place!!

It was one of those trips where you want the best room possible. I booked the Luxury Ocean View. The room was outstanding. We had an outdoor porch that looked to the beach. We arrived late on a stormy Sunday evening. We were taken to the open restaurant and had a great meal. Monday morning, i walked out of my room to be greeted by a concierge. She asked what we would like to have for dinner to make a reservation for us! I believe the first evening we went to the dinner show and it was very fun. The pools were incredible as were the drinks being served. We also dined in the Italian restaurant and the Japanese restaurant. Both great. One day, while enjoying the pool area from under my eyelids, i heard some Kenny G sort of music. I finally sat up to realize there was a musician strolling with a wireless microphone, playing a soprano saxophone! It was this type of crazy, incredible, unexpected touches that puts Royal Hideaway Playacar apart from other resorts.

In mid- July, my husband and I went to Royal Hideaway for a vacation together. It was so great!! Our room was cool and very comfortable. It had a big patio with chairs for us to lounge in. Upon arrival, there was a nice bowl of fruit on our table inside, and every person we interacted with in the lobby was wonderful! We could really tell things ran smoothly around here. Our personal concierge, Camilla was helpful every day with any questions we had. We found the beach to be super clean and nice, especially with the sun shades! We never had to fight for a spot. Find a spot at the pool was hard, because as some have said, people scout them very early. However, while walking around we found 4 other "hidden" pools!! They weee small but always surrounded by palm trees and no one else was in them! We enjoyed the solitary nature of these much more than the big activity pool. The beach bar line always moved quickly and the bartenders were super nice! We REALLY enjoyed the food too! The only restaurant we didn't care for was the Italian, but parts of it were definitely good. Just overall the experience wasn't as good as the other restaurants. Ventanas is amazing! My husband doesn't drink and really appreciated every server offering NA drinks and different fruits in his sparkling water. We can't wait to come back!! Also, the nightlife was super fun. The main bar that stayed open late was almost like a local watering hole. Small entertainment happened nightly and it was interesting to watch. If I could change one thing about our experience, I would have made the tv have more premium channels. But honestly, we did just fine without them!

For an all inclusive hotel this is not the choice you want to go with. The upgraded rooms are basically the same thing as the regular rooms. Nothing amazing. The beach isn't great at all. Don't let the pictures fool you. Food is terrible. Drinks are terrible. Beach service is terrible. This hotel is terrible.

Third trip and awesome!

Just returned from third trip in as many years to Royal Hideaway. This year was a quick trip, and happened to be in the middle of the tropical storm, but we didn't let that dampen the mood. Since last year the positive changes were the refreshing of the rooms and the upgrading of The Deck. The room layout did not change, but a fresh coat of paint, some new furniture, and removal of the heavy dark wood louvers helped to brighten the room! The new cover at The Deck is awesome, and makes it more usable when the sun is beating down. Service is still top notch, and it is fun to see some of the same faces each year. I always get nervous leading up to a trip when I start seeing bad reviews. This year there were two other couples with us that were at the resort for the first time so I was hoping everything would be great, and I was not disappointed. I can only address some of the common things that come up in the reviews. 1. Dinner reservations. Yep, you need them. I can't figure out why people are so surprised by this. I got mine 10 days in advance, for 6 of us, and it was simple. If you are familiar enough with TA to be leaving reviews, don't tell me you didn't read them as well and know that making reservations was necessary. 2. "The restaurants were half empty, why can't I just go in and eat?" Well, because this isn't a mega resort. They have the resort staffed so that they can provide service in all the restaurants for an entire evening. I suppose they could fill every restaurant to capacity, and at the same time have to triple staff and food costs, which would raise the price of the stay. 3. "I can't believe they require you to dress up for dinner." Again, if you are leaving a review about that, don't tell me you didn't read the hundreds of other reviews that talk about that. Personally I think it is cool that everyone gets dressed up for dinner. 4. "It is so quiet / Not enough entertainment" Yep, that is how they roll. They don't have an animation team to entertain you. That isn't what this place is about. It seems like every negative review addresses these things. If this isn't for you, there are about 100 other resorts in the area that may fit. If it isn't for you and you ignore all the reviews you read before booking, well, I don't know what to tell you. It is true, this resort isn't for everyone. This is for couples who want to have a relaxing vacation, enjoy great food and drink, and relax. This is not a big party resort. Nothing wrong with big party resorts, this just isn't one of them.
