Wonderful .... yet many issues are still to be resolved
Booked this wonderful beach front Hotel to celebrate our 25th Silver Anniversary. This was decided after the high trip advisor reviews for this Hotel.
I had e-mailed via trip advisor 3 months prior to our arrival, yet we had no response. I then e-mailed via Barcelo Hotels this was also bounced back. Eventually 2 weeks prior to our arrival I had a response only to confirm they looked forward to our arrival and our request for a particular villa could not be confirmed.
On arrival around 5.30 pm Mexican time, checking in process was nothing special compared to a 4* we frequent in Tenerife. We were advised they had kindly booked us a time to eat at Asia at 9.30 pm but were unable to offer us anything in any other restaurant any earlier. We opted for room service this night.
Our first day at the Hotel was of mixed thoughts. We went to Spices for lunch due to a rain shower that seems to have sent the Hotel into mayhem...... waited 1 hour 10 minutes to be seated, no apologies,no seating , and no offer for a drink whilst we were waiting. Once we were seated we found many tables waiting to be cleared and not enough staff to do this. This then seemed the theme for the rest of our 11 night stay. NOT ENOUGH STAFF
Breakfast in Spices was not acceptable for a 5* rating, I have had far better service in other hotels with 4* status . Main issues for which I actually complained on our last but one day were mainly due to frustration were:lack of a fully laid table, cutlery, salt & pepper, jam, and waiting for Tea,no butter, no bowls for fruit, dirty milk jugs on table. Simple things really, after my complaint I was advised that they were aware there was a "small" problem with condiments. My room number was requested.......not sure why.
The "Grill" was the main place for lunch...... again lack of staff seemed the big big issue here. Some lunch times we had Nachos, salad and other salads. Sometimes in a nice triple dish with them all included, other times thrown on a plate, and other times none at all, there never was any continuity here. Again this is familiar in this Hotel.
Continuity also in our room was another issue. Started of with hand towels, some days we had one, then 2, then none!! we had to ask for them back....Requested certain drinks for the fridge this was actually sorted day 9, water was not always replenished, so ended up taking from the pool bar ourselves. Rooms cleaned after 3pm, thought this was rather late in the day.
Hotel acknowledged our 25th Anniversary on the "daily news" but we have had far better thoughts from 4* Hotels for birthdays and normal anniversary 's in the past. Have heard this hotel has in the past acknowledged momentous occasions ,.Was really expecting more here,
GOOD Things..... Well there were a lot.
The pool service and staff were the best , best ever I have had. They must be acknowledged for the hard work they put in her.BUT again there was no continuity here. They ran our of sun block on day 3 of our arrival, we only saw ice cream only offered once, fresh veg once, and fruit skewers never... had our sun glasses cleaned once and facial water spray once. I understand this should of happened every day.
our concierge changed *3 times whilst were there. They were always very helpful especially Alfonso who went above and beyond to help me with a Dolphin Discovery issue that I had with a CD and photos. Never saw him again to pass on my sincere thanks.
The other Restaurants that we visited were absolutely 5*, except for one where we had an issues with ants, these were just brushed off the table by the waiter ...we managed to control them for the rest of the evening.
I have never stepped up from 4* to 5* but as this was a special occasion , so thought this would be a nice memory.
This hotel has many issues, it could be seen that many were being addressed whilst we were there, eg new beds, fresh new plastic glasses around the pool( old ones were really grim) new staff (Management) in Spices, garden maintenance, but I think it still has a long way to go.
Can only say the Hotel 5* ratings for this Hotel is for the beach facing facility it has and the pool service that the staff provide and 3 of the restaurants here.
Beautiful Place for Honeymoon
My husband and I stayed at the Royal Hideaway for four nights for our honeymoon. The property and service are top notch, as has already been described. You're made to feel special and glamorous. The beach and water at the property are gorgeous.
A few comments and tips:
We were a little taken aback by the guest behavior at the main pool. The all inclusive day drinking does not bring out the best in some. Sometimes we'd sit there and laugh at the entertainment while quietly saying OMG, but also feel quite embarrassed for the behavior of our fellow Americans.
Tips. We came unprepared for giving tips but shaped up after the first day. Tips are not necessary, but the staff is working so hard and they do such a wonderful job, I felt guilty not giving them tips. Come prepared with small bills in pesos or dollars. You'll be scattering them about as you walk around.
Favorite restaurants: Las Ventanas and El Palazzo
Least favorite restaurant: Azia
Day Activities: Allan is the master of fun during the day as he presides over most day activities. We would do the pool fitness most days were were there for silly laughs. We also did the mole tasting, cocktail making, and Mexican cooking class. Take a moment off your beach chair and join Allan for these fun activities! You'll learn something new and make some new friends.
Note to improvements committee: The Allegria bar could really use some updates! The inside holds so much promise and could be a really cool cocktail place if it was spruced up.
This place is Magic
My boyfriend and I just returned from a 5-night stay and had the most amazing time at this beautiful place! We were looking for an adults only, all inclusive resort that did not have the "spring break" atmosphere, served great food, had a beautiful beach and ambiance; this hotel definitely lived up to those expectations! I can certainly understand why many people return year after year; we are already starting to plan our next trip!
It is apparent that it is an older property, but the age of the hotel was not as important as the cleanliness and how well it is maintained. There definitely was some maintenance activity taking place, but the crews were very courteous and worked so as not to interfere with the guest experience. The pool and the beach are a great place to spend the day, but don't forget to take time to enjoy the resort after the sun sets! There are many beautiful places to sit and enjoy your loved one's company. The beach is also a great place to go for a stroll. WiFi is available everywhere and is great when you need to stay connected with family back home. WiFi coverage offered can be spotty at times, but vacation is not the time to be online every minute of the day anyway.
For us, it was all about the beach! I have stayed at several resorts along the coast and this is definitely one of the nicest stretches of beach you will find. There are no rocks, the beach is cleaned every morning, and it is also a great place to swim. It is wise to stay inside the roped area because of the motorized watercraft beyond. The depth varies somewhat but is perfect for getting out and splashing in the surf. Although the hotel is not directly affiliated with the water sports establishment next door, there are so many activities to choose from - kayaks, scuba, snorkeling, parasailing, wave runners, etc.
Whatever activity you wish to embark on, you can have your concierge or the front desk staff assist you in planning and outing. We worked with the front desk staff, who were extremely helpful in helping us rent a car for the day so that we could take in the sights along the coast. The pool staff are also very helpful in helping you arrange an outing. We were able to rent a couple of bicycles from them for riding to 5th Avenue for a little shopping. They will loan you a helmet, safety vest, a basket to easily carry back your loot, and a bicycle chain to lock up at one of the bike racks they offer near the security gate that empties out onto 5th avenue.
The restaurants offered a very peaceful and elegant atmosphere. We enjoyed a different restaurant every night. I appreciate the fact that they have a dress code for dinner; that really helps elevate the dining experience to a certain level not found everywhere. The Grill is really the only evening establishment that allows men to wear nice shorts. All other places had the option of dining indoors or outdoors; we always opted to dine outdoors. Dinner usually lasted one hour or longer; they serve everything in courses. That also really elevated the dining experience for us and preferred that to being served and done eating in 20 minutes. The cocktails were a little weaker from what we are used to, but I can imagine that is intentional so that the guests don't get too sauced (you can request double the alcohol if you prefer).
As for other forms of entertainment; you can be as social as you want or as private as you want. The main hub of activity seems to be in the front pool next to the bar. Some folks get a bit rowdy and loud during the peak hours between lunch and dinner, but there are other options available for those who wish to have more peace and quiet. We enjoyed the pool in the mornings and then moved to the beach in the afternoon. There are some smaller, quieter pools around the property too. The one in front of the fitness center/spa is very nice and offers iced tea and water. The Azia Bar is a very nice outdoor venue for the live entertainment they offer. We danced the night away when they had latin music night. When there is no band playing, it is still a very nice way to spend an evening with your sweetie.
Aside from all of the outstanding experiences we had at RH, the staff is what truly makes this place special. Everybody we encountered made it their mission to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Their professionalism and attentiveness is truly remarkable. I have seen them handle difficult situations involving other guests with the utmost patience and tact. Special shouts out to our concierges and the front desk personnel (I wish I remembered their names). The Manager we dealt with, Julio, deserves mention as well; he helped us expediently switch rooms when we encountered a minor problem with the first room we stayed in. Last, but certainly not least, was Alan at the pool. That fine young man bent over backwards to make sure we had a very enjoyable experience.
A couple of tips: 1) the laundry service was top notch, but we experienced a bit of sticker shock (we expected the price sheet to be in pesos, not US Dollars..an oversight on our part!) 2) please do your best to honor the 20 minute limit on reserving a pool or beach chair; many people would abuse this and leave their belongings on a chair for 2 or more hours without returning! 3) understand that if you are looking for a loud spring break party, this resort is not for you! There are plenty of other resorts offering that experience.
Lovely hotel but a shame about some of the guests
I have been thinking about writing this review since I was there in April but I was hesitant to spoil the almost unbroken rave reviews. So, first of all, I want to agree with all of the good things that have been said. Generally, the hotel is lovely and the staff are fantastic. The restaurants are excellent, especially for an all-inclusive, and all of them a la carte, which is one of the main reasons I chose to go here. The only restaurant that did not suit me was The Grill, but that's obviously popular with the mainly American clientele. My favourite restaurants were Las Ventanas and El Palazzo both of which had a lovely ambience, comfortable seating and excellent food. Las Ventanas maybe a little too nouvelle cuisine for some but was great for me.
The standard rooms are spacious with large bathrooms - separate bath and walk-in shower. I had an issue with my room on arrival as I had paid quite a lot extra for an ocean-view room. When you see the place you soon realise that there are very few ocean-view rooms. Although the building I was allocated was the closest to the beach, the ocean view was a sit on the balcony and look sideways and you could see a little of the ocean. They were unable to give me another room for two days but then I did move to a real ocean-view room in the same building (Villa 24) although unfortunately it was ground floor which is not my first choice. The only real ocean-view upper floor rooms are the suites.
I think they need to do something about their computer systems. I booked direct with the hotel and had a lot of problems during the booking procedure which I did on their published UK booking number but everything on the booking was wrong and eventually I had to get in touch with the hotel direct to sort it. To their credit they did ring me and it was properly booked. When I arrived I was asked to settle the whole bill on check-in, which I happily did (quite a large bill as I was staying for three weeks). However, when I was leaving not having incurred any extra charges, I was told by the main reception that my bill was still outstanding. Even though I produced the credit card slip from when I paid on arrival, this still didn't seem to be good enough. Naturally, with a taxi waiting to take me to the airport for my 10 hour flight home, I was getting a little agitated. Eventually they called the manager and all was sorted but not a nice end to the holiday.
My main disappointment with this hotel was the fact that, during my stay, there were several corporate groups who were extremely noisy not only by the pool but in the lovely restaurants. One evening in Las Ventanas the maitre d' had to come round to all the private tables to apologise for the noisy group of about thirty. I chose this hotel because it had reviews that said it was up-market and peaceful - sadly when I was there this was not so.
Although it's in a beautiful location, it has a very narrow beach frontage, so that all of the sunbeds around the pool are very close together. Therefore, when there is a large group, all of whom are drinking all day, the atmosphere is not quite what you expect.
Having said all that, the staff are excellent, restaurants are fantastic - shame about some of the guests who don't know how to behave in such a lovely place.
