This is a solid 4+. I chose this hotel because of the water slides and I was not disappointed. I feel it actually deserves a 5 because there is no other luxury resort in the area that caters to families this way. The water slides are the same you would find at a water park, but without lines! The resort has multiple pools surrounded by a very well kept garden along a km of beautiful sandy beach with calm water. There are multiple restaurants. We found the buffets to serve good fresh foods and stuck with those because it was the kids choice. There are several ping pong tables and other options to keep the children entertained. The nightly movie projected under a gigantic tree on the beach was another favorite of ours. My only complaint is the room. We booked superior rooms and they are huge, but in need of some updating and some toiletries! In my opinion conditioner and lotion should be a given. As a suggestion to other guests saving on the room and booking some excursions may be the way to go.

Beautiful grounds, OUTDATED & DIRTY rooms

Check-in - After taking the 2 hour drive from Panama City Airport and arriving close to midnight, we learned that part of our family had checked in to our rooms already, however all of my family arrived with me at midnight... so turns out they had given our rooms to someone else. 40 minutes later, and after calling the people staying in our room to verify their names which was nothing close to mine, they figured out the mistake and provided us with keys. ROOMS - When we arrived to the room, there were little insects all over the bathroom. The base of the toilet was filthy, and there was a ring around the inside of the toilet. There were 3 towels and no hand or face cloths. The refrigerator was empty with a dead bug in it (I was actually expecting drinks like a typical all inclusive). The furniture was outdated, the beds were hard, the pillows were very soft and only two on each bed. We woke up to a lizard crawling on our wall which took my husband about 15 minutes to coax out the sliding door. RESORT - The only reason why I gave this rating 2 stars is because the pools and slide (only one large one was working) were great, the beach (although not much seating near the swimmable area) was beautiful. Water was quite rough but not the hotel's fault like everything else in this review. RESTAURANTS - The buffets were great. We ate at the Italian and Sushi specialty restaurants and were disappointed. OVERALL - We work with the airline and are fortunate enough to travel around the world. We will not be back to this resort nor will I recommend it to anyone I know.

Resort lovely but customer service needs work

I went to Royal Decameron as part of a large group whose main goal was playing golf. We played Mantarayya Golf Club as well as Buenaventura which was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Simply put the experience at Buenaventura was outstanding, professional and we were treated with kid gloves. Outside of purchasing cigars, all my Panamanian purchases were made here. Mantarayya was a complete disappointment. While we were greeted by the club pro and given royal treatment at Buenaventura, it was the complete opposite at Mantarayya. They messed up tee times not to mention charging for the driving range which was already paid for. Trying to communicate with a young Panamanian worker, who had no idea what we were saying, did not make it any better. As for the resort, it was terrific if not a little dated. But a large part of going away is the personal treatment, the customer service you get. In this sense, those who work at this resort need some severe customer service training. Matter of fact, a company specializing in customer service programs could probably make a killing in Panama. It is desperately needed. As an example, we had a reservation one evening at the Peruvian restaurant but even though the spots were reserved they refused to seat us for 20 minutes because they had the reservations under one’s room number. Things like this happened constantly. Many of us in the group got the feeling we were not welcome...I could count on one hand the number of smiles I saw from staff over the course of a week. Maybe it’s the heat but a large part of the trip and repeat business is due to the treatment you receive. In this sense, if Panama wants a strong tourism industry they have a long, long way to go.

mobility issues? not a resort for you

Lots and lots and LOTS of stairs/ hills to get to the beach, water slides, lobby # 1 buffet, coffee bar. Humid as can be. My room was ok but my son was in 42 block and his room was horrible, the skylight leaked, flooded bathroom , fridges are not stocked at all, they give you 2 big bottles of water per room, no coffee maker in room, bring your own tea bags aND get wate from the coffer bars. The staff was amazing, language barrier was a but frustrating. Food was so so, restaurants staff was amazing, again the language barrier was a wee bit frustrating. Our group of 15 took the Panama Canal walking tour which was miserable, way too fast, didn't have time to look at things, I would recommend renting a car from the hertz right outside the resort and go on your own tour, My son and a few of this group did and headed to Rio Hato and thoroughly enjoyed it. The resort has a good shuttle system to get you to certain areas in the resort, unfortunately not to the beach. Been there done that got the fridge magnet, not returning.

I so wanted to love this place......

Unfortunately, the negatives out weigh the positives :( The positives - check in done at the airport and only a 10 minute ride to the resort - bonus after a very long flight from T.O. Most of the staff in lobby 1 very accommodating - we had requested main floor beach front rooms (5 of them) and only 3 of the 5 were given - they switched rooms for us within 15 mins (building 31) with no fuss! Transportation - they have their own vans circling the grounds with rest stops placed through out. Yes, the resort is huge and because we had an 82 year old and a 2 year old in our group of 11, calling for transportation to go from our location to lobby 1 or a couple of the a la carte restaurants was easier.....met Manual day 1 - he was awesome - made a habit of driving by our rooms to see if we needed him during the course of the day. Make sure you ask for him if you need to get around! The weather was fabulous. +30-35 daily - sunny and hot - one cloudy day and about 15 mins of a rain shower late one afternoon. Negatives!! One of the buffets (Atlantis) was closed for the majority of the week so it left only 2 for breakfast & lunch. One at Lobby 1 (Panamei - turned into the Italian a la carte for dinners) and the other closer to our section - the Pacifico. Believe the reviews - food was mediocre. Breakfast was the best - egg stations for made to order eggs/omelettes, toast, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, etc. They had bacon - but for some reason it was hidden in the egg station and you had to ask for it.....and even then, they gave you a strip or two only. Shook their heads no if you asked for more - found that several times actually at lunch and dinner as well.. Anything that was being served at one of the stations were portioned.....you got one, maybe two ribs or pieces of chicken - not sure why - its an all you can eat buffet! Tried 5 of the 7 a la cartes. Some were better than others but overall just o.k. The beachfront rooms were great due to the locations and the view - BUT there was a fridge that was not stocked - ever - we had to ask the maids to give us water.....after day 3, we didnt have to ask anymore, we had 2-3 bottles in our fridge daily. Never been to an all inclusive where they didnt stock your fridge with beer, soft drinks, water, etc..... No coffee makers in the room and unfortunately., other than in Lobby 1, there was absolutely nowhere to go to get a coffee/tea before 7:00 when the buffet opened. Believe me when I say you will need coffee before 7:00 a.m. They have these crows that spend all night in the palm trees - they start screaming around 5 in the morning and dont stop til the sun's out....you'll need a coffee before 7 believe me. A member in our group was disappointed that there wasnt an iron but they called the lobby and they sent one down a few hours later..... Language is a huge issue.....most speak Spanish only although we did encounter a couple of staff members that were fairly fluent in English and some that made quite the effort. I found that the workers that worked endlessly to maintain the beautiful grounds wore smiles constantly and shouted out good morning, good afternoon, etc, whereas some of the customer service staff seemed annoyed that you actually wanted to make reservations or had queries (specifically the girl that worked at the a la carte reservations in Lobby 1). These are the face of your resort - you should have people there who want to work instead of looking like its a chore to accommodate your customers. Back to the birds.....yes they are everywhere and yes, they fly in while you are dining and help themselves to peoples plates if they've left them unattended....the staff at the restaurants make an effort to "shooo" them away but its a losing battle....not the most appealing sight to see but impossible to control since two of the buffets are not screened. Just make sure to cover your plate with your napkin if you step away before you've finished!!! The grounds are beautiful, the location from the airport a huge plus - this should be a high end resort. Unfortunately, until they improve their food, add some of the above mentioned little perks and train some of their front line staff to be able to communicate properly with customers and to look like they like their job, it will remain mediocre.
