My partner and I travelled here in November and had a very relaxing vacation. If you travel with Transat, you land at the Scarlett Martinez Airport in Rio Hato and have a short 7 minute transfer to your resort. Check in is done right at the airport so you do not have to endure long lines once you arrive at the property. Your bags are delivered to your room within 15 minutes of arriving from the airport. If you are in rooms on the upper level, be aware that there are no elevators to the rooms located on the 2nd and 3rd levels of the buildings. Rooms are basic with comfortable beds, flat screen tvs with a few English movie channels, tiled rainfall showers and a cozy balcony. They do not have coffee makers, but you can request one if you need it. Most of the restaurants are located by the beach, and you do need to make reservations (3 days at a time) for even the buffet. The resort was at full capacity during our stay, but we had no issues getting the restaurants or times that we wanted when booking. And you do not have to stand in line for hours at 6am to book. We usually booked after breakfast around 1030 or 11am. The food is good and always lots of it. We happened to be here during the American Thanksgiving and a full turkey dinner was offered in the Atlantis buffet. There are lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, the bread is amazing and the beer is plentiful. The house red isn't so great, but there is a wine store in Lobby 2 that you can purchase bottles of your liking for very reasonable prices. There are a lot of steps, but after the 2nd day, you get used to them. If steps are not your thing, in the middle of the resort there are paved walkways up to the higher level that are easier to manoeuvre than steps. If you have mobility issues, I sugest a beachfront room and the use of the carts to get where you need to go. The beach is beautiful and there are lots of chairs and palapas to find some shade under. The swimming is amazing with clear water and sandy bottom - lots of unique and colorful shells to collect. Watch for riptides and undertow in some spots, but there is a great lifeguard presence should you find yourself in trouble. we read some of these reviews prior to travelling and I am not sure what they are based on. I did not find that language was a barrier, and our Spanish is not the greatest. We always managed to make ourselves understood or to understand the servers and bartenders that we encountered. The people of Panama are quite shy in nature and friendly once they open up. We want to mention Jonathan and Rudy in particular, who are 2 bartenders that made our stay great! They were very knowledgeable about many of the things we asked about, they made great suggestions on things to do and always served our drinks with smile and anticipated our need for another one. If you find yourself running into these guys - make an effort to become friends - they are great guys. If you are looking for a lowkey relaxing vacation, you will definitely find it here. If you are looking for a party resort, you can also find it here. Your vacation is what you make of it - but the Royal Decameron Panama certainly helps make it what you want it to be. I would recommend this resort to anyone, of any age as there are many activities for all ages from 2 years to 80 years.

Exceeded our Expectations

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Decameron from January 4, 2018 thru January 15th. I had read all the Trip Advisor reviews and had a few concerns but I was anxious to visit Panama and selected the Royal Decameron over the Riu and Blue Bay Coronado. WOW we made the right choice!! We are frequent travellers with a diverse experience base so I am providing what I hope is a fair objective review. I think this resort is a strong 4 *. Please feeI free to contact me if you have any questions. 1) Food and bars are quite good. Nine a la carte, a couple of snack bars and two or three buffets depending on time of day. I have had larger and smaller buffets and some better food / some worse but quit frankly if you can not make a nice meal out of the buffets or a la carte, you are not trying. A la cartes really same thoughts with good variety and choices. We had some chicken/ beef/ pork/ fish that was amazing, flavourable, suited our pallet and some we did not enjoy as much.. The same can be said for many of the dishes. Please keep in mind this is a Panamanian resort cooking for Canadians, Columbians, Panamanians, French, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, American, Bulgarians and many others....... many different pallets to please. You are away in a vastly different culture so try new things some you will like and some maybe not so much. Usually, a pasta bar on the go, fresh grilled meats and/or fish, so always a selection. We had very good service in all of the restaurants. We had excellent service and drinks at all the bars. We visited every bar and restaurant at the resort and we have no complaints. Good service, alcohol, variety of specialty drinks etc... We got to know some of the bar tenders toooo well but made some friends and shared some laughs. 2) Rooms are nice and grounds are clean and beautiful. The beds in our room were excellent, The air conditioner worked very well and quiet. The cleaning service was consistent and very good. 3) All buildings were in good condition and clean. Always staff around cleaning and picking up after the clientele. Front desk staff always helpful super quick and easy check in and check out. Hassle free. 4) Entertainment could use some work. The entertainment at the main amphitheatre seemed repetitive and lacking in imagination to us. I have to comment the Spanish people seemed to enjoy it more than the Canadians and non-Spanish. It was basically all done in Spanish lots of yelling by MC. They should copy what many resorts do and present some variety with musical imitators, dance extravaganzas etc.. We did find and enjoy their small house band that played at a variety of venues/ bars on the resort. Once we found this entertainment we did not return to main theatre. You might want to walk down to Nicos Beach Bar(formerly Woody's) just off the resort, excellent food and drinks. The new Italian owners Fillipa/ wife and Daseo the chef are fun and very hospitable. Good rock and roll band Friday nite for sure and maybe Saturday. We danced up a storm and met some very nice ex pats there. 5) The bellboy staff managed by Renee is excellent, well run and the best we have experienced in some time. Courteous and professional..... dropped off and picked up bags on time etc... 6) Golf course is a great value. Tough enough course and was in very good condition when I played a few rounds. Some tight, some forgiving and can be played to over 7,000 yds. if you want. Greens were quite good. Appeared to have a decent gym...I walked by it many times.. Casino is very small but acceptable with black jack, roulette and slots. 7) Panamanian people are (bonita) beautiful. Quite friendly and good service.....but please remember you are in their country you have to make an effort as well. We try to speak Spanish as much as we can and the effort is always appreciated. We are not very good at espanol .... but we try.....LOL We rented a car and went off resort and visited many places that do not see tourists as regularly. Everywhere we went the Panamanian people were friendly and good to us. 8) If you have physical challenges this resort has many stairs from beach level to the upper level so it could be a challenge. There are a couple of roads up and down so it is doable with a wheelchair etc.. In summary, I think this is a good 4 to 4 1/2 * resort. We are already planning to return with some other friends and family. A mi nuevo Panamanian amigos and amigas..........mucho gracious.......Roberto

Celebrated our 10th Annual Reunion here January 2018. There were 15 of us and we were all accommodated very close to each other for rooms. It is a very large resort with lots of walking and many stairs from the beach to lobbies (66 stairs from top to bottom). They do have ramps that you can use as well but they are relatively steep and also have resort vehicles driving on them so you need to be careful. Rooms vary from Beachfront to regular (which would be located at the top level so have many stairs to climb daily to get the pools or beach). So choosing the appropriate room is important to avoid stairs daily. Rooms are simple and roomy (who really spends lots of time in a room on vacation? Food was very enjoyable with a pretty good selection. Fruits and Veggies were fresh. Desserts were really good. Booking A-La-Carte can be a pain in butt...... You can only book for up to 3 days in advance and they usually fill up quite fast.... We were there at 6:30am one morning and were 12th in line. Buffets are simple and good. We only got to experience 3 A-La-Carte and by far Panamai (Italian) was by far the best. There are many different pools that you can enjoy with only 1 of them (adult only) being a swim-up pool. This pool is located on a mid level. There are no drinks allowed in any other pools. My favorite bartenders for the week included Jose and Maria. They were fantastic and made amazing drinks. Bellboy service is great. They take care of your luggage right from the airport and deliver it to your room. Check out time, you leave the luggage outside your room and they pick it up and bring it to lobby for you. Shuttle service to the golf resort is great and easily accessible. The golf course is amazing for those interested in playing a few rounds. It is a rather long course and does book up rather quick in the mornings. Club storage is also available at the course for a very reasonable price ($1.10/day). The girls in the pro shop were amazing with us and like to thank them. I must say that there is definitely a language barrier with this resort. There is not too much English spoken which can lead to having a hard time communicating.

So after reading reviews that complained about all the steps, it wasn't that bad at all. Yes, there is a lot of elevation change around the resort, and yes, it is quite spread out over a lot of property. But, you can always call for a ride anywhere on the resort, they will even pick you up at your door , all for no cost. If you are a person with mobility issues, then this is not the place for you. Previous reviewers complained about the red flags flying at the beach a lot, and they do, but that only signifies that there is not a lifeguard at the station. Every time they arrived, the flag changed to yellow ( could have been white in my opinion) but yellow because there is an undertow current a lot of the time and young children or non swimmers need to be aware, otherwise, go in and have fun. Rooms were clean every day but the walls are not soundproof. If you go,please respect your neighbours and hope they respect you concerning noise in the room. We did have one serious concern with this on the 14th, but not with guests. Many people checked out late Saturday night and the new arrivals from Warsaw Poland were arriving around 7:30 in the morning so housekeeping decided to clean all of the rooms around us at 4:30 in the morning. They continued even after being told they were disturbing our sleep. They were extremely noisy and somewhat disrespectful, but were just doing their jobs as directed by their employer. We were very upset with this. Luis from guest services addressed our issue in the morning and seemed quite surprised that this had occurred. Our Air Transat reps were also informed and indicated that it would be addressed with the hotel for future guests, but none of that helped us out. Luis has indicated that when we return he will assist us upon arrival to ensure that we will not be placed in this type of situation. The hotel should have placed all of the people that were on the same scheduled flight in the same area as they did, but not to stick someone else in the middle of all of the departing guests area. They are aware of this info at the front end because most of the people at this resort come on vacation packages. Food was good, nothing spectacular, but the roast turkey at the buffet dining room one evening was our favourite meal. I really hope the hotel follows through on their commitments to us when we return

We stayed at the Royal Decameron from Jan 8th to Jan 15th. The majority of reviews on here are VERY accurate. There were certain aspects I disliked but for the most part we enjoyed ourselves. Coming from -30 degree weather and having a week away from work, this was a treat. The weather was flawless. Resort Star Rating: Personally, I would say this is a 3 star resort. However, with the proper staff training, renovations and improvements it does have the potential to be a 4 star. I highly recommend that the resort take to heart some of my and other reviewers comments. Arrival/Check In: Once we got off the plane we proceeded to customs. Everyone had photos and finger prints taken. Bags also went through scanners before exiting the Rio Hato Airport. We then got on a bus and the ride to the resort was less than 10 minutes. Arrival at the resort was confusing. You get there and there are tables outside with envelopes. They do not welcome you... they just hand you an envelope with your room already assigned. They do not communicate anything about your room to you. So you will not know what your getting until you are there. We proceeded to our room to find out we were on the ground level and had two queen beds. Months prior both we and our travel agent requested a king room on a upper level. We were quite dissatisfied but made the best of the situation for the first night. Our Air Transat rep in the morning was able to have us moved to our original request as well as in a room that fit the category we paid for (ocean view). Food: The food was very basic and repetitive but well handled. We did not get sick from any of the food. They seemed to have good clean food practices. The a la carte restaurants are quite good. We especially enjoyed the Mediterranean, Seafood and Mexican. The service was the best at the Mediterranean restaurant. The buffets were pretty gross! Breakfast had sliced hot dogs being passed off as "sausage". We were able to find bacon on the last day but this is something in my opinion should be readily available. The only good thing about breakfast was all the fresh fruit. The banana bread was really good too. The lunch and dinner buffets were a huge disappointment. Cold foods were not kept cold and hot foods were not kept hot. The snack bars were much better than the buffet. The best lunch time snack bar being the one that is in the Asian restaurant. This was the only restaurant other than the a la cartes where hot food was hot and cold food was cold. Also, the reservations for the a la carte restaurants were such a pain. We had to get down to the lobby btw 7am and 8 am to get a decent time booked. It's also a painfully slow process. I would really recommend the resort make these reservations electronic. Drinks: They have a great variety of fruit juices for daqeries. The alcoholic beverages were pretty good. Selection was decent. The bartenders lacked friendly service. The only bartender that gave us exceptional service during our stay was Jorge in lobby 2. I would highly recommended the resort has him train other staff in customer service. As this in an area this resort really lacked in. As for the drinks we also enjoyed the tea selection. Service: As mentioned above, customer service is very poor at this resort. With the exception of the one bartender mentioned above and there were two younger male servers at the Mediterranean restaurant that offered great service. I understand Panamanians are quite shy and most do not understand English but it doesn't take much to offer a warm welcome or a smile passing by. Room: We had room 1624 on the 3rd level. It was a nice ocean view room. Dated but clean. Bed was very hard and could be much more comfortable. Shower is spacious and bath towels are a good size. The fire alarm beeped several times in the night our second night. My husband asked them if they could fix it but none of the resort staff understood the request. This was an ongoing problem and we even heard fire alarms in rooms next to us going off. My husband was able to fix the beep by pressing a button on the side but we had to do this one time each night. Be careful of the balcony door haha. I myself always am lol but my husband was not so careful coming out behind me one night and the balcony door locked us out. We had to yell for 30 min before a security guard that didn't speak a word of English heard us. He didn't seem to understand for a while that we were in trouble. We were quite frantically yelling! He finally realized we were in trouble and helped us but for the amount of time it took him to understand confuses me. We were yelling help! Using lots of hand gestures to try to help him understand Haha. I'm not sure what could be more clear. Resort security should know the word help in all the main languages as this could be a safety concern. Let's just say my husband learned his lesson lol and it's a funny story we took home with us! Beach/Ocean: Gorgeous huge beach! We walked it several times. Be careful of the tide, it is very strong! The beach chairs are very uncomfortable. They are just plastic. I would recommend brining a lounge chair pad with you for your comfort. Pools: Very nice, big and clean. My husband really enjoyed the yellow water slide. The yellow one left him with some minor cuts and bruises. That slide needs some maintenance. Chairs are much more comfortable at the pool than on the beach. We especially enjoyed the adult pool as it is the only pool you can have drinks in the pool. Bars and washrooms are very conveniently located around each of the pools. Gym: View of the pool and ocean from the gym is beautiful. Great location and basic equipment. Resort Grounds: Gorgeous and huge. Lots to see and do. Entertainment: Shows from Friday to Sunday were quit good but Monday to Thursday were VERY boring! I enjoyed the Sunday night MC far more than the regular nightly one. He actually communicated things in both English and Spanish. There needs to be less MC and more of a show. The MC's duty should be to talk less but keep everyone informed/keep the show flowing (there should be an even split of Spanish, English and French). Language: Most resort staff do not understand any basic English. This was a barrier but expected based on reviews before going. Airline Representative: The air transat rep Jacques was great: very friendly, helpful and informative. Spa: We had two massages during the week we were there. They were quite good but they need to pay attention to timing better as my husband and I lost out on 10 min of our hour long massage because I guess they felt they could just cut it short and we wouldn't notice. However, we did notice. Other: If you have any mobility issues what so ever, this is not the place for you. We loved all the walking and stairs but we are very active individuals. All in all we really did enjoy our vacation in Panama. It is a beautiful country. But based on having had better experiences at other resorts we have been to I don't think we would return to the Panama Royal Decameron.
