Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.

Just returned from an 11 night stay at the Riu Yucatan and had an amazing time! The rooms were very clean, fresh and modern - other reviewers have mentioned a musty smell due to the humidity but we found this disappeared once the air conditioning was on (this was nice and quiet so you could leave it on overnight). Lots of extras like alcohol in the room, a mini fridge with coke, lemonade and water (for free), a safe, ironing board and iron, and TV with a good choice of English speaking channels. The balcony was spacious and private. There is also free wifi which works in the lobby, pool and beach areas although not in the room. Only issue might be the bathroom arrangements - there is a glass partition between the rest of the room and bathroom area, and while the toilet has a door the walk-in shower does not, which could be awkward for some (although I stayed as part of a couple so had no problem with this!)
Lots of amazing wildlife within the hotel - we saw monkeys (which are very friendly and will gladly eat bananas out of your hands!), agoutis (like giant guinea pigs), iguanas, bats, coatis and peacocks during our stay.
The food at the hotel was brilliant - lots of variety and very tasty. We made reservations at the Mexican and Steakhouse restaurant and enjoyed both - you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to do this either (we made both reservations around 8:30am). Breakfast is served until 10:30am, and 11:30am for cold food, so you can still have a lie-in if you want. The waiter service is very good, fast and with a smile!
The main pool area is great - two big pools and lots of bars (including a swim up bar called Cozumel). Waiters also come around with a variety of drinks from time to time and an ice cream cart came around as well. There is also a separate chill-out pool which we didn't end up using but had its own bar and hammock area.
The beach is also fantastic, although we did experience quite a bit of seaweed at the beginning of the holiday (Mexico has a long seaweed season due to the temperature of the sea) but the staff were very diligent in cleaning this all up every day. The seaweed also disappeared towards the second half of our stay so might be better to stay towards the end of March. No problem getting loungers and the staff were very helpful with this. Some watersports such as body boarding, kayaking, wind surfing and snorkelling are also included for free! You can also do parasailing and jetskiing although this comes at a cost.
Entertainment was also enjoyable - I'm not usually a fan of hotel entertainment as generally it's very cheesy but there was a good variety of shows on and some great live music as well. If you're looking for a good night out outside the hotel, be sure to visit Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen which was a great show. It's very easy to get a taxi to explore the area - just ask at the reception desk and they will arrange it for you. We were only waiting a couple of minutes each time we ordered a cab this way and it's very cheap.
The general area of Playcar is brilliant - it's a gated community so feels very safe and is very pretty and well maintained. Lots of nice condos as well as all the luxury hotels. There is a small parade of shops just 5 mins from the hotel which has a Starbucks and lots of souvenir shops etc. The shop inside the hotel is also good for things like medication, suncream etc. (although be warned this doesn't come cheap!)
Overall we had a wonderful trip - the hotel is definitely worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone. We went on 4 excursions through Thomson which were all wonderful - Chichen Itza, Coco Bongo, Xcaret and 'Underwater World' (snorkelling in a cenote and with wild sea turtles).
shame about the sea weed

This was our second visit to hotel, last visit in 2011 changed decor and extra pool, this one was all one depth which is good for me being a non swimmer. Food buffet style good, ate twice at Italian no reservations needed. There is a steak, Asian, Mexican which you have to make reservations. We never managed to get one, in room fridge stocked and optics of serveral spirits. We requested a ground floor room near reception as I have a bad knee.
Which they gave me. Staff friendly and attentive. A hotel for most age groups.
For the first 6 days the beach had so much sea weed, couldn't go into sea without wadingthrough a thick mess. So disappointing . towards the end of our 12 day holiday it was a lot less. The staff were moving it with machine and by hand, digging in large holes.
Hotel grounds nice have lots of different animals, birds.
Lots of bars and pool areas.
The one thing was apart from music, the showtime was not as good as before and was a bit butlin like. It was not well attended. On our last visit we had trouble getting a seat.

Before we booked we had a good look around and found this one, hoping to be good value for your money and it exceeded expectations. As soon as we walked in they gave us a warm welcome with a drink, they took our luggage after filling out forms and they brought it to our room in no time (expect to give a tip, we got advised to give 50 pesos). From there on everytime we walked through the lobby or went to the bar or just sparking up a random conversation these guys make 100% effort with you, you never catch them standing around doing nothing they are constantly working to please the guests. They have an international buffet, Italian, Mexican, steak house, and Asian, we didn't try the Asian but the food is nice with a big variety. Nice pools, beach is really nice only problem was we had alot of sea weed being washed up but that probably lies down to bad luck, I think. Expect people to come to you trying sell Cuban cigars aswell as other merchandise on the beach, after being there my tip is only keep 400/500 pesos on you in your wallet and stash the rest somewhere else on you because you can haggle. The night life is great, got to see the Michael Jackson tribute, probably the best show they had on but everyones got there own preference, and you can use any riu hotel and have free drinks apart from the riu palace so be sure to see what they've got to offer because they also have good night life. Overall recommend this hotel to anyone, gutted that I am now back home :( Kind regards room 9108 from 18th March - 25th March.

We have just returned from Hotel Yukaton after spending 11 wonderful days in what could be considered the best All Inclusive hotel we have stayed at. We travelled with two good friends who had never experienced All Inclusive before and were unsure what to expect. They (and us) were blown away with everything from the fantastic choice of food for breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. The imported drinks, cocktails and optics in your room (yes optics in your room)!! The hotel itself has been renovated and what a brilliant job they have done from the lobby which is stunning and a lovely relaxing place to sit to all the rest of the hotel. Reading other people's comments about the white bedrooms I really don't get it, white is cool in a hot climate, looks fresh and how much time do you actually spend in there anyway? The rooms were kept incredibly clean by the very hard working and happy staff. In fact without exception, all the staff in and around the hotel were wonderful. The animation staff were without doubt the most energetic, enthusiastic and friendly bunch of people we have ever experienced. Even on the quiet days they somehow managed to gather up people from around the pool and involve them in all sorts of fun and games. Well done them. Now to the beach, one of the most stunning beaches, warm Caribbean Sea, Palm trees, plenty of beds dotted under the trees for the all important shade. Get up for the sunrise, it's spectacular. I have now run out of positive adjectives so shall just finish by saying if you are thinking of going to this hotel stop thinking and do it you won't be disappointed.
