Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.

Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.

Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).

Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

Hotel in general seemed to be lacking in general maintenance upkeep. Our shower door would not close completely, door handle on closet kept falling off, had friends that their air conditioning didn't work at all. Beds were extremely uncomfortable. Would not be a place that I would go back to. .. More>

First time we were alone Jan 2014, second time Nov 2016 we were with our 18 month daughter. Had a lovely holiday at this hotel. The food is good, rooms are clean and the beach is beautiful. Craig and Mayelli the TUI reps are great, both of them gave us great support and advice throughout our stay.

Second time and will definitely be going back

This is the second time I have been to the Riu Yucatan and it seems so much better than the first time. We were put up in one room which was slightly foisty. I think this had something to do with the location rather than uncleanliness mind. We asked to move for medical reasons and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and accommodated us in another room. The room was cleaned daily and the cleaner as fantastic, the room being cleaned by 11am everyday and new towel decoration too. The rooms are open planned so the bathroom/shower can be seen from the balcony. Some people may not like this if they are with friends etc. Maybe frosted glass on the shower might be helpful. The entertainment team never stop from day to night. There are various activities such as bowls, horseshoes, water aerobics and beach exercises to participate in if you wish but they do just leave you be if you wish. I can't comment on the evening entertainment as we never watched it. Food was lovely, you don't need to book to go to the steak or Asian restaurants, but you do with the Mexican. The buffet room has all sorts on and will cater for everyone. As does the room by the pool for lunch. I will say the Asian was disappointing. They seemed short staffed and I still had my soup bowl on the table when I was eating my dessert. Other than that the staff are excellent and your water/wine is always topped up. Sitting outside on the terrace is a lot more quiet and relaxing. The bar staff will make any drinks you want. I can't complain about any drink I had and I went through the entire menu. Later seems a bit weak but I stuck with cocktails anyway. The pools are excellent. The quiet one at the top near reception gets very very hot with little breeze and the main pool is also good with a neice breeze. People do reserve beds early which I get annoyed with anywhere I go (the British are just as bad as other nationalities) but there was plenty to go around, especially if you didn't need an umbrella. There were plenty of spare beds on the beach and a guy will move any beds to where you want them. Great location, the Riu Tequila is over the road which you can use (has a nightclub and sports bar) and also the playacar is just up the road also. The centre of playa del carmen is a 35minute walk or 100 pesos in a taxi. I didn't use the spa but the gym could do with being updated considerably. As it caters for three hotels it gets busy. The equipment is old and is just needs to be bigger. I used the gym on the few days it rained. If I visit Mexico again I will definitely be staying here.

Average all inclusive

We spent a beautiful week here. The hotel is an average all inclusive hotel. Nothing bad, nothing super star. The pool is cool, and the best is the beach and water activities you can do. Foods and drinks are good enough, as well as the room. I would recommend it.

Nice visit

Sorry riu I am going to be brutally honest, firstly I would like to thank the amazing staff bar and waiting also the animation team who work so hard to make you feel welcome and entertained day and night . The food for us at best was average we were so disappointed with the main and lunch buffet I know it cannot be easy to cater for all and we all have different tastes but we found a lot of the time the food was one or the other either cold or very dry as though it had been there for a while, sorry Riu but was expecting better. The specialist restaurant where better apart from the Mexican which we found a letdown aswel. The rooms were basic but kept very clean also the grounds were spotless. The location of the hotel was great right on the beach so you got a nice view and also breeze. Would I go back I,m not sure it had good points and bad it's a shame because everything but the food was perfect a great mix of people and ages .

Even better than last year!!!
Wed Jun 21 05:10:29 EDT 2017
We returned to the Riu Yucatan again in May this year but with friends this time. Our friends couldn't wait to go after the rave review we gave them about Mexico last year, and the holiday certainly didn't disappoint. Standards haven't dropped at all; the cocktails, wine, spirits, beer and food all first class. The amount of freshly prepared differing types of food you can chose in the restaurants there is something for everyone (in the al la carte restaurants you don't need to book now which makes choosing where to eat a bit easier), all the staff whether its the cleaners, waiters/waitresses or the entertainment team they were always friendly, willing to help or always cleaning making sure everything is spotless. Yes at breakfast the tables are not always ready during the peak time but if you go when it opens (6.30am) or ask the helpful staff they soon lay a table for you. This year (due to mother nature) there was a little bit of seaweed on the beach but the staff were on the beach every morning to clear it away so not really a problem. Something they didn't do last was a pool party complete with the foam which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Pool/beach activities lasted from 11am-1pm then 3pm-5pm ranging from beach zumba, water aerobics, pool games, tabletennis to bingo so something to do if you wanted to or sit by the pool and watch. Weather as you expect for May really hot, two of our day 31C all the rest above that. Three episodes of rain all in the late afternoon just before dinner that probably lasted for about 10mins. We cant rate this hotel, the people, the place or Mexico itself enough, thats why we will be going back next year at sometime.
