All Inclusive

Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.

Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.

Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).

Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

Our room wasn't the best. It's one thing to be an old hotel, but just upkeep in our room was poor. The door was scuffed, the bathroom mirror was chopped in places. Our fridge needed to be wiped down. The shower drained really slow. The upkeep on the room was poor. Looks like things were tended to, b .. More>

Everything about Riu Yucatan and Frontier flight was good. However we bought transportation to and from the airport. The Amstar woman who met with us to tell us what time the return would be was late, rude and basically gave us misinformation. Her name was Irena and she was horrible. .. More>

We absolutely loved the staff - everyone was incredibly polite and friendly. We were struck by the fact that every employee we walked past, whether mainenance or housekeeping or dining, smiled and said 'hola'. We felt very welcomed. The hotel was immaculate. We stayed at the Yucatan in 2009. We loves I then. Decided to go back and wish we would have just kept our good memories. We didn't like the renovations. It was not friendly and homey. The pool chairs were placed in every available spot. No room to move..no tables. I did like the covers ove .. More>

The food at the sit down restaurants could be much better, the food in the buffets were very good. The hotel pool bar needs extra attention to cleaning. I understand that there is a lot of traffic which causes extra debri floating around. Also no kids should be playing/swimming in the pool bar. Thi .. More>

Good but no cigar

The best thing for us about this hotel was the staff, without exception they were friendly and helpful. Even the reception staff who in most other places are more business like and reserved, but here they were always happy and smiling and it was impossible to walk past without a greeting if they were not busy. Rooms were clean and spacious, optics in the room and a fridge full of mixers were a bonus but on the other hand the lack of coffee making facilities in the room was a let down for a 5 star hotel. Our first room overlooked the car park and entrance to reception and was noisy with taxis and coaches returning revellers and new arrivals all night long. The reception staff arranged for a quieter room. The food and service in the main buffet restaurant was good and what you would expect from a hotel in this area. The arrangements for the speciality restaurants seemed bizarre. You could have unrestricted visits but could only book on the day and the booking desk started at 07.00, we called at 07.30 one morning and the steak house was already fully booked. Not helpful for a relaxing holiday if you need to set an alarm clock to book a meal. It was good to have a choice of the main pool with all the activities etc or the quiet pool if preferred, my only disappointment was the excessive number of sunbeds squeezed in like sardines with no room in between beds making it difficult to get on to them or to move them around to chase the sun or the shade etc. Overall a good hotel and one I would consider visiting again. Had a great holiday here. Review is broken down to different headings. HOTEL - Nice and clean, room was basic but had everything you need. Cleaned on a daily basis and mini bar topped up every other day. Stayed here 4 years ago and the changes they have made have been for the better. FOOD - Tried three of the themed restaurants, Asian has a good buffet style service where at least you can mix the different food together, Some people do prefer waiter service but the the choice is more limited. Mexican - I preferred to buffet style starter to the service for the main course. The fajitas were good. Italian - This was a new restaurant to us and our favourite. Good choice of main course - beef, veggie lasgana, salmon amongst them. The A la Carte restaurant always had plenty of choice and was maybe the best for families. How people can complain about the choice in here surprises me - they must have a wonderful lifestyle st home. POOL - The quiet pool is a nice addition and is very relaxing. The main pool is a bit noisier but if you sit waay from the poolside you are not bothered by the animation team. However if you want a decent seat you do need to be a bit German and put a towel on it early on. The beach is lovely but if it is hot you need to take shade under the palm trees - and those beds go quickly. EXCURSIONS - We did Chichen Itza and Captain Hook. Both vastly different but both good excursions. Chichen Itza is along day but well worth it - the guide Jorge was excellent. Captain hook was good fun - I;ve not seen so many people smiling in a long time. REPS - We were with Thomson and have to say thet the reps- Tammie. Houda and Maya were excellent. You should go on Tammies walking tour of Playa del Carmen - its a great help. They also provided excellent information on medication and checked if all was OK. MOSQUITOS - I took some highly recommended repellant from UK and it didn't seem to work. I had 12 bites ii one day. Tammie, the Thomason rep, suggested I tried a local repellant called Off. It worked brilliantly. More>

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Yucatan May 7-14, 2016. We have stayed several times in other Riu hotels but this was the first time here. As with every Riu we have ever stayed the food was excellent and plentiful. We rarely eat in the specialty restaurants as the selection and food in the buffet is more than enough for both of us. We did eat in the Steak house one night and it was ok but for us it wasn't worth having to make reservations. However, the Yucatan offers a no reservation needed Italian restaurant that was very nice. The is a small place off the Lobby, with salad and dessert bars but table service for the appetizers and entree. Of course the food was great but the quiet space and efficient service was so relaxing. Other reviews mentioned that the newly renovated lobby, in pink and silver, was somewhat garish, I agree, enough said. The housekeeping staff were very friendly and did a very good job cleaning and maintaining the room; with a couple of glaring exceptions. The in room liquor was not restocked and the light bulb in the WC went out. I unscrewed the bulb and left it on the toilet seat. It was removed immediately but in the remaining 3 days it was not replaced. To be fair, we never called the front desk to request service, we were too busy enjoying our vacation. When we were moved into this room my husband ask for beer for the frig and it arrived immediately. I think you need to ask the right person and not assume that it will be taken care of automatically. The beach and pools are beautiful. We spent most of our time around the pool where there were plenty of loungers shaded with umbrellas, and under screens and palm trees. The beach was beautiful, with plenty of space for the true sun worshippers. We stayed in building 5, 2nd floor. The first floor rooms tend to be dark even when the sun is up and we couldn't climb to the 3rd floor. Buildings 4 and 5 are pretty quiet and centrally located. I would recommend this resort and will return. More>

The resort was beautiful. The food and drinks were plentiful and very good. The staff was exceptional. They really went out of their way to take care of us. We had a friend with an injury and they were wonderful about helping us and accommodating her extra needs so that she could still enjoy our vacation. Will definitely return! More>
