All Inclusive

Ever since it opened as the original RIU Resort in Riviera Maya, Riu Yucatan has been a leading choice for families and couples! Themed in an early Mexican Colonial style, the resort features a lobby modeled after an authentic Mexican town with hand-painted frescos of flowers, angels, and clouds. Relax beneath one of the many palm trees sprinkled along the white sand beach, or enjoy the array of watersports in the clear waters of the Caribbean.

Four restaurants feature a variety of dining choices. The Hacienda Restaurant extends to a terrace amidst jungle greenery, offering a great variety of tantalizing buffets and on-the-spot cooking. Guests are sure to enjoy the informal atmosphere of Margarita's specialty restaurant, as they dine alongside the large pool area and take part in the delightful theme nights. Shanghai, the Asian restaurant, serves amazing buffets. Snacks are available 24-hours a day and the five bars, including two swim-up bars, serve unlimited drinks.

Activities abound at this non-stop resort! Enjoy watersports such as kayaking or body boarding, or venture over to the 18-hole golf course nearby! For a soothing experience, sip a sunset cocktail in one of four bars or pamper yourself at Renova Spa. Complimentary 24-hour WiFi is also available in the common areas of the resort (available in rooms for an additional charge).

Every evening, live entertainment, and music provide the perfect show right before heading off to bed. Riu Yucatan has exchange privileges with Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar (dinner dining excluded), so entertainment is never in short supply!

First trip to mexico!!!

Just returned from the Riu Yucatan. Stayed for two weeks, from the 31st aug - 14th sept. Location: This is a beautiful hotel, and is situated in good location from all of the excursions, shopping areas and nightlife area. Taxi is only 90 peso to the beginning of the shopping area and there is always one outside the hotel. be warned about the people trying to get you into their shops or to buy things from them in the streets. The area felt pretty safe all the of time, especially as its a gated community. We booked excursions through street vendors instead of through the reps at the hotel and saved a lot of money. The guys on the excursions all seem to ask for tips which i found a bit cheeky. Pools: The hotel has a quiet pool, a main pool, a swim up bar and and a kids pool. Although im not a 'pool' person in general, the quiet pool did look clean and quite relaxing and was situated by the lobby. The main pool looked clean and was always occupied, many activities are held each day in the main pool and they do look very lively, if you are down by the beach, you can hear the noise from the activities which to be honest sound like a party but they do look like a lot of fun. The swim up bar, well i was not impressed with what i saw, it didnt look like the cleanest of pools and was constantly occupied with LOADS of people huddled up quite close to each other, smoking and drinking with cups floating around in the water...personally not my cup of tea but as i said im not a 'pool person'. The sea: definitley breath taking the moment you set your eyes on it. White sands and clear blue waters with fish swimming, even in the shallow part. The sea was a bit choppy on the first few days with red flags but after about 3 days, the sea was calm with green and yellow flags. You can kayak and get snorkel equipment for free which is a nice bonus but jet skis, katamarans and parasailing all have a cost, you will be sure to find these guys selling it to you on the beach, aswell as trying to sell you cigars! never had an issue getting deck chairs either, no matter what time we went to the beach. The sand is clean but as expected, u can find the ODD cigarette butt. The seaweed, ive seen people mention it on here and i dont know what you expect from a beach! there is the odd bit of it in the water but really not something thats worth mentioning! Overall, a beautiful beach! Rooms: Decent rooms, quite modern and up to date. Decent amount of space. Satellite tv with hardly any channels but who goes on holiday to watch tv!? free optics with a choice of 4 drinks. Fridge is always restocked with beer, water, 7up and pepsi. The showers have a clear glass door so there isn't much privacy, the only way around this is to put a towel over the door. Staff/cleaners/entertainment guys: The guys at the bar were all lovely people, no matter what time they were working they ALWAYS made an effort for people, constantly smiling and joking around with the holiday makers. I liked the fact that they always made sure the bars and tables where always clear of glasses and ashtrays where emptied. Reception guys are very helpful and never seemed dismissive towards anyone. On one occasion, i had some altercations with my excursion and they didnt hesitate to phone them for me and help me to sort it out. The cleaners, well to be honest i wern'tt really impressed with them as they would sometimes forget to replace things they had taken. On a few occasions, we were left without glasses/cups and pillows, leaving us to call reception to get them to bring them up to us. Also they are not really respectful of the fact that some people are still asleep at 6,7am in the morning and make up a lot of noise outside rooms when speaking to each other. Restaurants: we ate at mostly at the hacienda which is the main one, food was nice but somedays the selection personally wasn't up to my taste, but that's me. There is something for everyone. we ate in the margarita and we both were not impressed with the selection so we didn't return there. there is a restaurant near the pool serving lunch which was ok, nothing special. We didnt bother to try the other restaurants. All where very clean though as we did have a look. Hotel grounds: Ok, there is lots of wildlife to see walking around and hanging from the trees, what is nice is that they dont bother you. Although you do get the people who want to feed them. LOL my advice, be careful of the BIG crickets flying around...i wasn't warned and freaked out when one decided to land on my chest!!! The security of the hotel is poor! I saw ONE camera in the hotel and that was on the bar. The reason i mention cameras is because, due to the cleaner coming in everyday and opening my balcony door and forgetting to lock it back, my room was entered and i had valuables stolen!! CCTV in that circumstance would have been very necesarry. Baring in mind all the ground floor rooms have balconies that are easily accessible. You can use the facilities at the Riu tequila and they Riu playacar. The playacar was beautiful and clean but i found it to be quite boring. The tequila seemed super dated and the racoon looking animals where EVERYWHERE!!! They where running around in herds rummaging bins, running through the lobby, on tables, under chairs, to the point people had to get up and leave where they were sitting!! They certainly are not afraid of humans in the tequila. i found that place unhygenic!! Overall, We LOVED our trip to mexico, the only issue we had was the security of the hotel itself and being broken into but other than that, we had a lovely time and created some great memories! A word of advice, DO NOT get a ground floor room Also bring Peso as its what you will always get change in when you spend money. More>

Stunning location but not 5*

Stayed at the Riu Yucatan for 2 weeks enjoyed our time there but feel the hotel is definitely not 5* and more 4*. The hotel is in a beautiful position directly on the beautiful beach and has lovely gardens where all sorts of wildlife wander through the grounds as well as Howler monkeys swinging through the trees. All staff we met from reception, dining room, bars and room attendants were very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Prior to our arrival I had emailed the resort to request a room on the upper level close to the quiet pool and also told them we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We were given a room on the second floor in block 2 near to the quiet pool. The room was decorated with balloons and a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate our anniversary which we thought was a lovely touch. The room we felt was very basic and not what you expect of a 5* hotel although the bed was huge and comfortable and the air on worked a treat. This is a large hotel therefore dinning in the buffet restaurant where breakfast and evening meals were served was always hectic and not a relaxing dining atmosphere which felt more like a school dinner hall. There were an additional 4 al a carte restaurants available but there was no variation to the menus same every night with a buffet starter followed by waiter service for the main but a little more relaxing than the main restaurant. During the lunch period the Mexican Restaurant and the Steak Restaurant were used as they are bear to the lower swimming pools and the beach where the majority if the guests spent their days this again was chaotic and very noisy. It was nice to be able to use the bars and facilities at the 2 sister hotels the Playacar and Tequila you were also able to have lunch there as well. There is a small shopping area near the hotel for souvenirs etc but not much else only hotels and apartments no little bars to wander into if you fancied something different although it was only a 10 minute 90pesos taxi ride into 5th avenue where there was an abundance is shops bars and restaurants if you didn't mind running the gauntlet of being pulled in every direction from every business on the street. All in all we enjoyed our stay met some wonderful people both staff and fellow guests but for us the hotel was too big and lost some of its charm. More>

This review is a bit late considering I went in July. Just wanted to say that it's a fantastic hotel and the wildlife is amazing. The beach is beautiful and the food amazing. The only issue I had is that the pools were dirty everyday, with dead flies everywhere. They never seemed to be cleaned out as cleanliness never changed throughout my two week stay. More>

VALUE FOR MONEY

We have just returned from staying at the RIU Yucatan and have to say it was great value for money. It is not a new hotel but the rooms are clean and tidy and have everything you need including drink optics, ironing board and big flat screen TV. They are cleaned every day with towels changed every other day. Your fridge is replenished every other day as well. The food is superb and anyone who says otherwise is very hard to please. The buffet restaurant, which we used most of the time, has a very varied choice of food to suit all taste to a very high standard especially considering the amount of people using the place. They also have a Chinese (Asian) restaurant served the most amazing Chinese food. The steak house is nice for a change but it's an open air restaurant which due to the high humidity wasn't to my liking. We tended to use the quiet pool during the day where you could always get sunbeds but you had to be early if you wanted a sunbed at the main pool which by the way can be quite noisy due to all the activities going on. There are plenty of sunbeds on the beach and the view is idyllic with the golden sand and clear blue sea. Just be careful as there is a nice cool breeze off the sea which cools you down but you can easily get burnt as we found out. The animation team work very hard to entertain and in fairness get a lot of people taking part through the day. However, they have limited ability in putting on shows. The staff from the receptionists to the gardeners are all very friendly and take the time to say hello. Those in the restaurants can't do enough for you and pander to your every need. You have access to other RIU hotels on the complex which is good as we used to visit other hotels on a night time and found that you cold always see a good show in one of them. A criticism would be the beer. They only serve local XX beer which tastes like a cheap lager otherwise you have to drink shorts or cocktails. Overall the hotel is great value for money and would recommend it to anyone. More>

Best Holiday of a Lifetime !!!!

The hotel was amazing, it had plenty of bars, restaurants and entertainment throughout the resort and you have the option of using the other 2 Riu hotels. The rooms are kept very clean and are very comfortable with lots of space and room. There are plenty of pools and the beach to choose from. The hotel is massive and has loads of rooms which is good and you don't notice the amount of people that stay there as its a massive hotel. You never feel squashed or that its really busy. The staff are amazing and always went out of their way to ensure you have everything you need/want. Location is perfect if you are doing the excursions you aren't very far away from everything and its only the odd trip that can take an hour or two. The hotel is in the resort of Playacar and it is very secure with security checking everyone in and out of Playacar to ensure the safety of residents and tourists. With all the excursions you have guide to take you around where required. The hotel staff are always cleaning and improving the hotel with maintenance always around. The hotel has a variety of wildlife living on the resort which you can see most days including monkeys and iguanas and much more. The Thompson representative on site Tammie was lovely and very helpful with arranging our excursions and providing us with information. We stayed at the hotel from the beginning of September for 12 days and the weather was great only a couple half days of rain ! Perfect beaches and loads of activities. Perfect Holiday !! Brilliant staff !! Amazing Experience !! More>
