Resort is nice but would have stayed somewhere else, beds hard.. All pools close at 7 because they dont have life guards. When your away vacationing you should be able to swim& chill in the pool pass 7 pm.. All the bars close as well at 7 pm.. Desserts at restaurant arent good at all, food was decent but not at all.. Rooms need to be upgraded.. Free liquor in your room

Just enjoy it!

When I first booked this holiday. I was worried I had wasted my money. Based on all of the negative reviews on this site. Luckily for me that was not the case! I loved this resort. Everything was clean. Although a little run down. (It’s been open for 10 years though!) Arrived on the 8th of Jan. Late afternoon. Weather was a little drizzly but the humidity kept me warm! Check in was quick. Although there were many people checking in with us at the same time. They had plenty of staff on hand to help. If you need a second key, you are sent to the small room to the left of the desk. So that they can continue checking in the others. You are given towel keys that you trade in for beach towels whenever you need them. Just make sure to hand a towel in to get the key back. Rooms was very spacious, air conditioning worked amazingly well (there are blankets in the closet if you get cold) nice balcony to sit on during the evening. We were in room 5004. The building closest to the beach. Although looking onto the garden. (I didn’t really mind as I don’t spend too much time in the room.) the room was also close by to one of the buffet restaurants. Pools/bars and near enough to the lobby ect. Really nice building to be in! If you need help with your bags, there are always staff around to help you out. (They can also show you to your room if you are unsure of where it is.) shower has great pressure and heated really quickly. Food. Was really good! All the servers are hardworking and polite. Shout out to Onicka, Princess and Christopher! If you cannot find something you like to eat then you are the pockets eater out there! There are fries, pizzas and hamburgers for kids ect. Bread rolls, potato dishes, bacon, sausages, lots of seafood, jerk chicken, fruit, cereals ect! Dessert was really good! They even have a ice cream bar in the restaurants too! Pools. Very clean, although quite cold, but considering you are in a hot country the pool was very refreshing on the hot sunny days. Good music playing. The pool bar was very good, all servers nice and friendly once again. Beach. I personally love going to beaches. So that being said. It means I’m used to seaweed that comes along with the sea. Yes there seems to be a lot of it. But if you don’t like it then go to the pools. Seaweed is a natural thing. Not the resorts fault that the seaweed gets stuck in the area. Lots of small fish swimming about which is cools to see. Beach kept pretty clean. There is always someone taking the seaweed away from the waters edge. Picking up cups and plates from customers. And there’s are lifeguards stationed there too. You can go on paddle boards, kayaks, and a few more boats too. No extra charge!! Just head to the shack on the left hand side of the beach to sign up and get a life jacket and go! On the left hand side of the beach there a few trees for shade. And you will meet some vendors on kayaks. They are selling shells, bracelets ect. Just don’t buy coral or starfish from them! It’s illegal to take them out of jamaica. I paid $15 usd for a big shell. Excited to put it in my bathroom at home. Just make sure you declare it on the way home. (Had no issues with it) there are also lots of small shells in that area for anyone who enjoys shelling. (Just make sure there are no animals inside them before you take them away.) Entertainers. Unfortunately i never was able to stay awake in time for the shows at 9/9:30. Because I was getting up so early in the morning to watch the sunrise and have breakfast ect. But the entertainers were around all day. They are and energetic and enthusiastic bunch! Really nice people and always up to play ping pong or jenga. Bugs. There were none. Could be the time of year we’re visited. But I saw two flies throughout my entire stay. Quite a few ants but they did not make their way into the room. There are cats on the resort to help keep any mice away and eat some of the lizards. People feed them any scraps from their plates on their way back to their rooms. The cats are friendly but just be careful around them because technically they are wild. Made friends with quite of few of them and they are so cute! Outside. I was lucky enough to go to Montego Bay. The town part. Lots of shops selling the same thing. Look around first and see the prices before you buy from the first shop you find. Harley Davidson stores are there and there is one just outside the resort too. Doctors cave beach is a little crowded but had less seaweed and also had a reef you can swim to.i believe it is just under $10 per adult for the whole day to stay. And $8 for a child. The mall outside of the resort. There is a big blue building called the blue diamond. This is quite run down. I would not recommend going on your own. See if you can go in a group of 4+ if you do. Prices aren’t much different from the gift shop inside the resort anyway. (Some items in the gift shop was cheaper than those sold here) the mall on the left hand side of the street is a much nicer plaza. With the Harley Davidson store there too. This is the second Riu I have been to. And I throughly enjoyed it. Just perhaps the reason there are so many bad reviews is because people are expecting the ritz. It is what you make it. Think positively when you’re there and enjoy your holiday! (Also keep in mind that everyone working there make a very small wage, about $50usd a week, so tipping is throughly appreciated.)

Very nice resort

Husband and I stayed here for 1 week. I must say we enjoyed this resort very much. The food was excellent, the staff were amazing. I was impressed with the room. This resort is on the smaller size. We absolutely loved the jerk hut....missing my jerk chicken. The Beach is smaller, lots of shade, a short walk from one end to the other. My only complaint is... when you are in the ocean ... the bottom feels very mushy. You need to wear water socks....unless that doesn't bother you. But that's my only complaint. Even the huge planes flying overhead wasn't a huge deal. If you can get this resort for a good price... don't hesitate to book.

We stayed here Dec 20-24, 2017. Upon our arrival it was very easy and fast check in. Very friendly staff at front desk. The map of the property was a little confusing, but we figured it out once we got to room and looked at the layout. We were on the 3rd floor. Our building does have an elevator but we mainly took the stairs both up and down. Good way to work off the food that we ate! The room that we had did have a faint musty smell, I expected it to be since I read the reviews. I just sprayed Febreeze one time when we first got into room and it was fine the rest of our stay.. We were here with family and we noticed that their rooms had a very strong musty smell.Their rooms were on the corner of building and had a big balcony. I am glad we had the smaller balcony and a faint musty smell than a big balcony and a very strong smell. Our bed was a king size bed. ( NOT 2 beds pushed together, like some other people noted ) and it was very comfortable. It had 4 pillows. We did have to grab the blanket that is supplied in the closet. The air conditioner worked very well in our room. The temperature in Jamaica was in the mid 80s F. There is a stocked fridge with Coke, tonic water, orange soda, and the local beer made in Jamaica. Also had a liquor dispenser on the wall above the refrigerator. It had Gin, Rum, Vodka and whiskey. I don’t think we drank much of the liquor in the room, or the sodas They did have huge bottles of water. I am not sure why, but, there was a sign in bathroom telling you not to drink the water from the sink. It was fine to brush teeth and take meds with. We did not get “Montezuma's Revenge” from it! If you leave hungry, then you are way too picky of an eater. Oh my! the food that they serve. Pretty big portions at the restaurants, very good food. The breakfast buffet blew us away! So much to choose from. It was nice to sample Jamaican dishes at the buffet. Delicious food the entire time. They had drinks of the day. Very good, not too much alcohol in them though. If you just ordered a regular bar drink, they did not skimp on the alcohol! The entertainment at night was tremendous! They all did a great job. The beach was nice, not dirty, a lot of beach chairs in one location. They always went around to collect the plates and glasses at the beach area. The Jerk Chicken shack at the beach area was so good! You cannot eat any food at the pool edge, but you can drink in the pool. There is a swim up bar, that was cool. They did have some trivia games at the beach area as well as beach volleyball games. And had games at the pool area as well as water aerobics. They have kayak, paddle boat, paddle board and small catamarans that you can use. No charge. Just sign a waiver and get your armband punched. They do have a couple gift shops at the resort. The prices were not too bad, maybe 10% more than across the highway at the shopping center. Everyone at Riu was friendly and helpful. Always had a smile. We will book at Riu again if we do another all inclusive resort. We got more than our money’s worth with Riu. This Riu is an older resort, and some places it did show it. That is why I gave it 4 stars.
