Good hotel

Really nice hotel with no real negatives. The food, drinks, location and entertainment are all good. If you are picking negatives the seaweed and fire ants make the beach less than perfect, but nowhere is.

Beautiful beach!

This resort really has a beautiful beach. I mean CanCun has beautiful beaches period, but thi particular beach was so calm and clean, just beautiful! The hotel was also beautiful. The rooms were clean and well kept. We paid extra for an "ocean view" after moving from our room that had absolutely no view and smelled like sewers literally. When we called the front desk they told not to worry the smell comes and goes. What?! Really?! So we're spending a week in a room with a questionable smell for a week?! They said that was all they could do or we could pay for an upgrade to an ocean view at a "discounted" price. So we did, and our "ocean view " was a "partial ocean view" because it ha a huge palm tree smack in the middle. Lmao! We really did not make too much of a fuss, because we really wanted to just enjoy our vacay and the front desk really did not seem to care, plus that room had no sewer smell, do that was a plus! We enjoyed a clean, smell free partial ocean view! The resort itself is very nice and the rest of the staff once you got away from the front desk staff were a lot nicer and accommodating. The food though was not so good for the most part. I know it's an "all inclusive" resort and quality tends to go down, but I've been to other all inclusive with much better food. All in all, it was a good experience. If you're looking to book a stay in Playa and find this place for a good price, take it. Just make sure your room doesn't have that sewer smell. Enjoy the beautiful pools and beach this place offers!! I need a new vacay now!

Consistently amazing hotel

My wife and I visited the Riu Playacar in September/August 2018. This was our 5th or 6th visit to this hotel but our 20th visit to Playacar, each time electing to stay at on of the Riu hotels. All of the Riu hotels in Playacar are of an amazing standard, but the Riu Playacar is our favourite. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at this hotel. On the rare occasion we did have a problem, a quick phone call to reception and the problem would be dealt with quickly and with the minimum of fuss. The Playacar has it all, a fantastic pool area and an amazing beach . The all inclusive is exactly that and the food and drink is first rate. Even the fussiest of eaters (like me) will always find something they like to eat. Whenever we travel elsewhere in the world we always book a Riu hotel because we know what standard to expect. We hope to return to the Riu Playacar very soon and our favourite room (8311). Thank you all at the Playacar for yet another fantastic holiday. Mr & Mrs Hugh Atherton.

about 1hr 15 minutes from the airport, in a gated community called playacar. location: - 5 minutes taxi to playa del carmen. initial impressions, nice lobby, efficient service. Had to pay an environmental tax of 20 pesos per night. rooms are in blocks of 3 levels and run down a pathway to the pools and beach. The hotel was renovated a few years ago and is appealingly decorated throughout. rooms are spacious, generally twin rooms with usual amenities and balcony. bathrooms are open plan with twin sinks and a shower room. the pool area contains 2 large pools and a relatively large pool bar. as this is a riu hotel, we were allowed to visit both the riu tequila (which was renovated in the last year) and the riu yukatan. The hotel does not seem crowded as it's on a large plot, wheras the yukatan was crowded and it's pool was dirty with evidence of sick in it. Riu teqila was similar in size but is a long walk to the beach via a tunnel. Food was good, with asian, italian, and shared mexican and steakhouse. on that front, the shared restaurant became a every other night type restaurant during our second week of stay. this was the only downside i could find, as we noticed a significant fall in service during our second week as the number of staff seemed to significantly cut. I'm not saying the staff weren't working as hard as they could, but that there suddenly weren't enough of them. Italian and steakhouse were our favourite restaurants, with the buffet being great as it changed themes every night. The only feature that i would like was a sandwich station during lunch, as you don't always want a large lunch after the excellent breakfast. The beach was nice but there seems to be a seaweed issue across the yukatan peninsula in general (we were in cancun last year and it also had a problem). the hotel staff worked hard to clear seaweed as much as they could and it didn't significantly affect me personally. this is nature and there's only so much that can be done. Entertainment - we don't really care that much about the entertainment, but on talking to some other people, they said that it was ok. riu tequila had a nightclub that you could use, tequila seems to have more younger people than this hotel, riu yukatan seemed to be the party hotel, if a bit run down. there was a coco bongo foam party every thursday which we liked. we had another great time in mexico and hope to return next year

Amazing service

Start off with hats off to bartenders: Perazza at the pool bar, Charly at the 24hr front reception bar and entertainment head Valentino. They made our amazing stay even better. Our first day we encountered Charly, very knowledgeable about the hotel, things to do around the hotel, things to do outside the hotel. Knockelege on liquor and drinks was phenomenal. Always laughing and always had a smile on his face. His attitude the entire time was amazing. Same goes to Perrazza at the pool bar. We were a group of 4. We told him the first time what we liked and for the rest of the trip we didn't have to actually name our drinks. He would see us coming to the bar and he would get it started. There were couple things we mentioned we wanted that wasn't around and he went out of his way to get it for us. The following days we came back, he brought those things with him for us. He was always smiling and everyone, working with a great attitude, and was fast worker. Valentino, the entertainment host was a blast. The jokes he would make, things he would say made you crack up. I told him my name once in a simple conversation, for the rest of the trip every time he saw us, he would call me and my wife by name. As the amount of people he sees every day idk how he remembered us. Only thing this hotel could've stepped up, was room service. Room service was okay. Over all the hotel has 3 pools, 1 including a wet bar. 1 24hr bar. Room had beers, water and liquor for self pouring(you need to call the operator to get it restocked, room service didn't just restock for you).4 specialty restaurants, Asian, Italian, steak house and mexican. Along with 2 other buffet restaurants. Food was really good quality and had variety where you didn't get tired. Would definitely stay there again!!!
