Great Vacation location - right on the beach

Amazing location - some of the rooms are a bit wet and moist smelling, but the location is in a tropical location! I thoroughly enjoyed the time and the amenities for the location. Great Pool with swim up bar - free guest rentals were awesome for the Boogie boards & volleyball court - I mean who doesn't like beach volleyball! More>

Excellent beach resort in Riviera Maya in Mexico, we have travelled to the other two Riu hotels within the Playacar area and of the three we would highly recommed this for location, service, accomodation, food and drinks and value for money. Ideally placed for a stroll along the beach to Playa del Carmen where there is an abundance of restaurants and bars catering for all tastes and ages, alternatively a taxi from the front of the hotel costs no more than a fiver. Whether you're looking for an action packed holiday or a sedate and well deserved rest from your everyday life the Riu Playacar has it all. More>

Clean, Family Friendly, and Incredible Staff

This was our third stay in Playa del Carmen at a Riu resort. The first two were at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya, and this time was our first at the Riu Playacar. The Playcar was extremely clean due to its recent renovation, staff was super friendly (just like we've experienced at the Palace) and the kids pool was perfect for the little ones in our group. Overall, no complaints! Food was excellent, including the specialty restaurants, drinks were solid, and nighttime entertainment was actually very good. In case others are interested when comparing Riu Playcar versus Riu Palace Riviera Maya, here's what we noticed (not particularly negative, just differences noted): 1) No room service at Playacar. 2) No personal beach drink service; a waiter was down on the beach every so often with a selection of drinks to hand out on a first come, first serve basis. 3) Liquor brands weren't top shelf like at Palace (not a big deal for us) 4) WiFi in your room comes at a cost of $35 USD for a week, whereas the Palace is included Aside from these minor differences, we would not hesitate to return to Riu Playacar! Hubby and I honeymooned here. Hotel is beautiful and we really enjoyed the close walk to shops and other restaurants outside of the hotel. I will say the food is not that great the only restaurant hobby and I enjoyed was the Asian restaurant and the breakfast. Pool atmosphere was always fun, but get there early to claim your chairs with towels as you will see people doing the same. If you want a good chair by the water. We did change rooms due to little bugs in the bathroom area. I believe they were still in the next room we had. We received a massage and it was great but I had some issues with receptionist at the massage desk when we closing out due to pricing. Tried to charge me more. All in all great place but don't count on the food if you are a foodie like hubby and I. Beach was full of seaweed and smelly. More>

2nd time but not sure if I would come again

My husband and I came to this resort several years ago and wanted to bring the kids. We went this past week and the new renovations are gorgeous. Pros: Staff so great! Always smiling, helpful and friendly Food was good (although our last day there the lunch seemed like leftovers, nothing was fresh) Small so you don't have to walk a long way to get to the beach and there is a nice shopping center across from the hotel that is fun to go to. Cons: ALL pools close at 8:00 so if you have kids basically they are going to be in the room watching TV or playing on devices from 8:00 on. This is the main reason why we will probably not be back. That is WAY to early to close everything down. Outside bars close at 6:00! So from 6:00 on if you are out by the pool or the beach, you have to go all the way back to the front of the property for a drink. There isn't water, beer, soda, NOTHING at all in the vicinity after 6:00. Again WAY too early. Air conditioner was broke for about a day and a half but they got it fixed quickly and called twice to make sure it was fixed. Since we are a family of 5 we had to get 2 rooms. I requested multiple times that we have adjoining rooms. We didn't. We were in the same building and it was a big pain going back and forth when you have 3 kids. Seemed like every time we needed something it was in the other room. BIG CON: The onsite rental company Scuba Caribe. This was my experience with them: We bought the excursion from the stand at Riu Playacar. The guy told me the price for all day was $250. The next day he said, Miss, come here. I can give you a better price today. Yesterday was bad weather so I gave you a bad price. So today it is good weather and I will give you a good price. He told me it would be $120 each for my son and I to go to Punta Venado. He said it included riding around on jet ski's for an hour, then we would get off at another section of the beach and go horseback riding, ATV, swim in a cenote and then ride the jet ski's back for another hour back to the main area. Well, we get there and find out $120 is more than their normal price, it didn't include snorkeling like he told us, and when we arrived they said we owed $20 more for transportation. This is how the day actually went, ride jet ski's in single file line for a little bit, walk down to the "cenote" a pond that was about 30'x30' (not a cave, underground river) just literally a pond sitting in the middle of some trees, then we drove around on ATVs for a bit and then rode horses along in a single file line through some underbrush....NOT on or near the beach OR in the forest like their video and advertising shows and we didn't get to ride the jet ski's a second time. It was very disappointing. It was very disappointing that we were not told the truth regarding our excursion. We should have gone to Xplor like we originally planned. Another day it had rained and then completely cleared up, we go to get some boogie boards and the guy said they were closed for the day because the weather had been bad earlier. Mind you, we were ON the boogie boards during the storm and turned them in when the rain became so hard it was hurting. So when it cleared up and the sun came out, we go to get them again and they said we couldn't get anything because they were closed...so the kayak, boogie boards, snorkeling gear, etc that are all included in our hotel...we were not allowed to use now that the sun was out. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon so the rest of the day we had nothing to do. You can see my full review of the nightmare experience at Punta Venado on Trip Advisor also. So our overall experience with the hotel and staff was great, but unless you just want to sit inside, nowhere near the ocean, at the main bar in the lobby from 6:00 on every day then you might want to look at other hotels.
