More plus than minus

With my husband and 4 years old daughter, we spent a week in this hotel. Plus: the hotel is spotless clean, the staff is always very friendly, the all inclusive drinks are a big plus and there is a service on the beach and and on the pool, very nice! The pool and the beach are nice and you always find a sunbed available. Minus: the humidity in the rooms is really unbearable! Everything is constantly wet and it feels like sleeping in wet sheets. Even paper was soaked.. they should really put a humidifier in each room (like they do in Dubai)! The food is frankly poor.. the choice is huge but everything is almost without any taste and looks precooked. Also the a la carte restaurant (I tried the Italian where usually nothing can go so bad) was terrible.. but again the service is so good! All in all a nice place that would deserve a 3 or maybe almost 4 stars but surely not a 5!

Can you say AMAZING?!?

LOVED LOVED loved our stay at RIU PLAYCAR! PERFECT resort in every way! Playacar is a safe gated area! Beautiful sandy beach, you can walk a long way along the beach on both sides of resort! To the left, you can walk to Playa de Carmen (20-30 minute walk from the resort)! LOVED it!!! A must do! Hotel has been renovated and what a beautiful modern clean looking concept!!! Many spacious and airy areas to hang out! Pool areas are huge!!! Lots of loungers! And for those who love a swim-up bar, you'll love this! We had a beautiful spacious room with comfortable and cool AC in building 7 (THANKS Ivette for making this happen for us! WE LOVED IT!) And THANKS to our cleaning guy Samuel for keeping our clean smelling and spotless everyday!!! ALL staff is professional, friendly and attentive! A special shout out to Pedro! Love his friendly nature-- he knows how to make his guests feel welcome! Bar areas are also great! HUGE thank you to Alfredo (best smile EVER) and to Froy for making our time there remarquable! They make a great team! Thank you to Osvaldo at the other bar area for the great margaritas azul in the big glass! Lots of palm trees to give us lots of shade in the beach area with lots of loungers! Resort and grounds are remarkably clean and well maintained! THANKS to all staff who work hard to keep this soooo clean and inviting! In a perfect world, there would be a non-smoking section on the beach...(hard to please smokers and non-smokers alike!) FOOD was plentiful, fresh and DELICIOUS!!! Excellent variety at the buffet! We were VERY impressed! Something for everyone! Breakfast, lunch and dinner, ALL was fabulous! We did eat at the steakhouse one night and that too was excellent! Love the no-reservation policy! Other restaurants Asian, Mexican and Italian seemed to be awesome as well but we just enjoyed the buffet at our own leisure! Hard to beat such great food!!! Lots of excursions available, many activities to participate in at the Resort and nighttime entertainment is entertaining. Staff go out of their way to keep us smiling! We saw many families enjoying this resort as well! Kids seemed to be enjoying their activity monitors! All in all, THIS was one of our most enjoyable and PERFECT vacation on ALL counts!!! If far exceeded our expectations! Resort, staff, food, beach, pools, bar areas, location!!! This has it ALL!!! DEFINITELY recommend this resort! Riu Playacar is right up there for us! Love the Mexican people! LOVE Riviera Maya! THANK YOU RIU PLAYACAR!!!

Lovely location, beautiful beach!

We stayed with a large group and were very happy with the resort. The most beautiful beach I've ever seen, friendly and helpful staff, nice rooms and tasty drinks! The downside was the food. Great variety but much of the buffet was bland. I recommend the Italian restaurant and the steak place near the beach. The WiFi is poor unless you pay to have it in your room, and the TV was awful (picture, channels). That was the least of our worries, though, as we had too much fun on the beach to care!

Amazing!

We just got back from five days at the Riu Playacar and we had an AMAZING stay! The staff is absolutely amazing and so kind. Valentino is a GREAT entertainer and really made our trip that much better. Osvaldo at the bar by the stage is hands down the best bartender we've ever had. Him, Enrique, and Nelson at that bar are the best. We really made relationships with these people while we were there. The food is good too. Some things were different just because it's not how we were used to them. The Asian restaurant "Jades" is by far the best. And the Mexican by the pool. Definitely will be staying again.

Nice resort, but food not so great

Really enjoyed the setting of the resort, with the 2 pools, and beautiful beach. Great location just a 5-10 minute cab ride to downtown Playa, costs about $ 5 US if I remember correctly. The food, however, is really not so good. All 3 of us felt generally not well after every meal. Many of the options look very nice presentation wise, but then have absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Never really come across this before, very odd. Some meats/dishes are dried out given they are sitting under heat lamps for hours. We never got sick, thankfully, but just a general unwell feeling. That said, at breakfast you can bring what ingredients you want in an omelette to the egg station and she will make it for you-- very tasty, and fresh! Guacamole was also always good. We liked the Asian restaurant best, but it is quite salty. Make sure to do a day trip to Tulum, we used the collectivos. Beautiful!
