This is our second time staying at Riu Playacar but our third time with a Riu resort. I love that they have activities throughout the day for everyone. My kids are teenagers and are very active. They don't just want to lounge by the pool or the beach, so having volleyball, football in the sand, water polo, etc. keeps them entertained. The shows in the evening are excellent. We have never felt the need to leave the resort but we do like to explore things about the countries we are visiting. We went to Xei Ha and it was exceptionally beautiful!! would totally go there again.

Overall the hotel was good but we are not likely to return. We previously have stayed at both Palace resorts and they are much better. We had ants in our room the entire trip and the food was hit or miss. One night we ate had bad fish (smelled rotten) but thankfully did not get sick. The beach and staff are excellent! On a separate note we were disappointed by how apple vacations handled the luggage prepayments. We were never informed that you have a couple of days preflight to pay for them or you have to pay directly with Frontier at an upcharge. We felt that since this is an all inclusive package out of the country at a minimum carry ons should be included in price.

This was our first all inclusive vacation and we chose Riu Playacar based on price and reviews. We were not in anyway disappointed. The hotel staff were all outgoing and helpful, the facilities were clean and constantly kept that way, the hotel room was comfortable and very well appointed with new fixtures, and the pool facilities were top notch. I was so pleased with our stay that I am already looking for a return trip.

The resort and staff was top notch. Very friendly and clean. The food could have been a little better. It was kinda getting old eating the same stuff day after day.

This was my first trip booked through Apple Vacations as well as to Mexico. I could not have asked for a better experience. Starting from the booking of the trip to the transportation, to the hotel itself, the trip was perfect. The staff at Riu Resorts was so accommodating, I don't think I have seen a cleaner hotel and facility. The entertainment staff was so fun and overall, it made this a vacation I will never forget. Thank you so much to Apple Vacations and Riu Resorts.

Riu Playa, Great trip

My wife and I spent 7 nights with 3 other couples at the Riu Playa from March 17 to 24th. I would recommend this resort to anyone on a budget that still wants the 5 star treatment. The hotel is not a 5 star resort but, for the price of a 7 night trip, it is perfect! Rooms, pool area, beach are great. Workers are very happy and always willing to help. No major issues for any of the 4 couples during the week. My biggest complaint was the food was never hot. Luke warm most of the time. However, the food was good (not great, good). Compared to other resorts in Cancun, the Riu food is top notch. We have been to Mexico/Cancun approx. 10 times and we will be returning to the Riu. Most likely the Riu Palace next time so we can have room service. Again, great value!!

We loved the size of the hotel. We loved the daily activities and the size of the pools. The only thing we didn't like was the food. We didn't starve but everything seemed to be overlooked and dry. If you could put the Riu Yucatán food in the playacar it would be the perfect place.

Great place to stay. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They work extremely hard. Lots of fun activities you can get involved in or you could just relax and enjoy the sun. The beach was well taken care of. The food was good, a bit repetitive but enough of a variety for everyone to find something they'd like. Unfortunately, my wife got food poisoning for the last 36hrs of our vacation. She thinks it was from the salad. We met another gentleman who also got food poisoning and thought it was from the salad. It may have been rinsed in no potable water. So skip the salad!

I loved this hotel, stayed 2 weeks and got back on 15 Jan, pools were good beach was amazing food was plentiful sometimes needed to be a little hotter but all well cooked, the staff never stopped. Stayed in block 8 on 3rd floor( no lift but only 41 steps) and room was nice, the only complaint about the whole resort is the connecting doors, it’s a single thin door so you hear everything in the next room, surely every room doesn’t need to connect, get rid of some, Edvardo who looked after our room was the best and Willy in restaurants was always on the ball great place just sort the doors

Best Christmas Family Vacation

Stayed at the Riu Playacar over Christmas, and had the time of our lives! The service, food, entertainment was perfect, and the visit from “ParaSanta” made it unforgettable. My children adored the RiuLand staff, and us adults thoroughly enjoyed the games of beach volleyball and acquarobics. I really appreciated the Buffet set up. My 5 year old is a picky eater, So I was grateful for the kid friendly options being available next a wide selection of exquisite adult fare. We will return soon!

A good mid class place. Small in the midst of a huge complex. The rooms are fine. The food is good. Service is also very good. The Italian restaurant in the lobby is very nice. Great beach. A nice place for a daytime walk into town.

Underwhelming service

We left the hotel after our 8 day stay feeling "meh" about it. We had much higher expectations for an as-advertised 5 star hotel. Overall, we got a sentiment from the staff that it didn't really matter if we were happy or not, so we gave up on some issues. The bartender and wait staff weren't overly personal and didn't seem very happy to be there. Buffet drink service was so slow, and they were also very slow at clearing plates. Room: We were in Block 2, right by the entertainment stage. Our room (2213) was in the back corner, furthest away, so we thought it would be okay. Wrong. The corridors are open air, so the sound comes in and reverberates. We could hear every word of the evening performance, which does not start until 9:45, and can go 2 hours. This was problematic when we needed to leave at 7:30 am for an excursion. The bed was hard and the pillows were really lumpy. Overall house cleaning did a good job, plenty of towels, and plenty drinks in the mini bar. The jungle view was beautiful from the balcony. The grounds are well maintained and manicured. Food: We probably had too high of expectations when it came to the food. We are used to cruising, so used to a sit down table service every evening. This is not the case, even in the specialty restaurants. Asian is all buffet, and The Italian has buffet appetizers and dessert. We found the best food to be at the main buffet, The Palms, where there was always a wide selection and themed dinners some nights. Problem areas to us were: terrible coffee in the morning, the steak at the steakhouse we had ordered medium-rare, and it came out well done, sometimes the buffet food was cold due to cooking too much at once. We really disliked the sushi here; they only offer about 5 rolls, non of them warm (tempura shrimp or the like), and they were all so bland! Too much rice. We were really disappointed with that as we love sushi and were looking forward to it. The drinks at the bar are strong enough, and they make lovely cappuccinos and hot chocolates. Entertainment: I enjoyed and partook in a fair amount of the Riufit classes; beach workout, step, pilates, pool workout, etc. They had a lot of stuff going on during the day, but it felt mostly the same every day (darts, ping pong, bingo, poker, every day..). Would have liked more variety. We really enjoyed the Riu band that played before a couple evening shows. Some evening shows were very good- the fire show, mariachi, and opera (el divo) in particular. Some we unfortunately had to walk out of, namely the pop stars show. We were bummed there was not a foam party in the 8 days we were there. Hit and miss on this category. Beach: We booked this hotel because the beach looked so beautiful and we were not disappointed. It is stunning. Not much seaweed, only a little after a couple rough days. They have workers on it constantly. Bartenders do bring drinks down to the beach on a large tray so that is nice. You can walk all the way into Playa and we did that round trip once. You will see this beach is one of the nicest along the way. Watersports included: We went to borrow snorkel equipment a couple times and they were always out, as it was being used on one of their excursions. That was disappointing. We did take out a double person kayak and had a lot of fun with that. A lot of people were using the hobie cats, which we weren't brave enough to try, but they do offer a free lesson, which is a nice touch. When we see a hotel advertised as 5 star, we set certain expectations on that, and were disappointed. Once we adjusted our expectations after the first day or two, we did enjoy our stay, and like I said, the beach really is fantastic. However, with the general feeling this hotel left us with, we will explore other all inclusive brands, as there are so many options, especially in Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Tulum.

Amazing

We visited from Dec 25 for 1 week the hotel itself it small which I really liked not much walking to get from point a to point b, the beach was wide clean and never had a issue of finding a place to sit, food was good at all times, Also another thing that there wasn’t much pork at all which is a important thing to many different people so I really liked that about the Riu housekeeping came everyday by 9am ,both mine and my kids room were cleaned everyday we were in block 3 perfect right in the middle my kids rented jet skis 4 times got a better price next door , 55 US , snorkeling no where but you can bring bread and get a swarm of white fish right on the beach , the beach at playacar was actually the best I did walk the beach and ours was easy to get in and out of not much of a drop off , we did 2 excursion we did the zip lining and atv and also did the catamaran with snorkeling and a stop over in isla mujeres which I didn’t enjoy we got dropped for 2 hrs left to either go shopping or sit on the beach we weren’t prepared and didnt bring much money so if you go bring a blanket or pay 15 American to get a table and money to buy gifts or souvenirs, we booked our excursion across the street from the riu and got to enjoy a Starbucks coffee overall it was a great start to visiting Mexico also I did book the vip lounge at the airport well worth the money , I would refer this place to someone who wanted to visit Mexico
