We stay at Riu Playacar a week ago, we enjoy the stay but we suggest to try Riu Palace Mexico or Riu Palace Riviera Maya, everything will be better on those 2 hotels. We usually stay on Palace but this time we couldn't´t fine rooms available. At Riu Playacar, rooms are just average, beds are old, we love the beach, all days the same food menu.

This was our 4th visit, but first time since the renovations. The beach is still beautiful and the food was great. Drinks were always too sweet, but plentiful. The bar/restaurant/cleaning staff are excellent as usual. The location is great, with Starbucks across the street and Playa del Carmen a short walk or cab ride away. The renovations resulted in a mixed bag of pros and cons: two pools are better than one, but not when they both get as hot as bath water from late morning onward. The restaurants now have all the atmosphere of a cafeteria. The loungers around the pool get “reserved” early, which is a pet peeve – if you are not using them right now, let other people use them! The renovated rooms are nice and the beds are much more comfortable than before, but this was the first year we have ever had a bug (ant) problem in our room at this resort. Ants were all over the floor, on the dresser, night stand, etc. The front desk response was to hand us a can of Raid. Yes, it is a jungle, but when staying at an ostensibly 4-star resort, there should be better pest control in the guest rooms and a better front desk response to such problems. Another area for improvement is the quality of customer service provided by the front desk staff. In prior years, the front desk staff have been happy and helpful, directing us to restaurants and such in town. This time, the female staff in particular appeared to take no pleasure in helping their customers, do not smile when approached, and act as if they have better things to do. For instance, we asked a female front desk person for advice on a laundromat in town, and she said she didn’t know (which is fine), but when we asked if any of the other staff would know she told us “no.” The fact that she couldn’t ask one of the five people standing around behind the desk a simple question was a ridiculous and rude response. In such a crowded market where consumers have so much choice along the same beautiful beach, RIU Playacar needs more than a facelift. I suspect this will be our last time here. P.S. If you forget anything, take a quick cab ride to the Walmart in town, where everything (sunscreen, hats, etc.) is less expensive than in the tourist areas. It was about 120 pesos for the Taxi one-way.

Just returned from 2 weeks holiday at the Riu Playacar and have enjoyed every minute of it. The hotel room was clean with a good size and comfortable bed, flat screen TV well stocked minibar and optics. The only thing missing was a coffee maker which I missed. The restaurants were good with plenty and varied choices of food.I used the buffet restaurant mostly but I also went to the steakhouse and Asian alacarte restaurants, the Asian alacarte was excellent with a large supply of amazing Chinese food which you could keep going back for more. The steakhouse I felt very rushed,we had only just been seated when our starter dish was placed in front of us before we had even ordered anything.I ordered the ribeye steak which was cooked to perfection and overall the food was very good it was just a pity that the meal seemed rushed. The staff were excellent they couldn't be more helpfull from the cleaners to the bar staff to the maintenance staff who fixed our toilet in less than a hour. The free wi-fi was excellent, the best I have known ,you could use facetime or Skype on the beach which I thought was exceptional. The only thing I must point out and again the hotel staff worked like mad to clear it is the large amount of seaweed that is washing up on the whole yukatan peninsula, our beaches were kept reasonably clear but on our trip to Tulum we saw beaches that were covered in it. We took a trip into playa del Carmen which is only ten minutes away by taxi and costs about 90 pesos and is worth a walk down 5th avenue or you could take the ferry to Cozumel. In Playacar there are a number of Riu hotels that you can use the restaurants and other amenities during the day but you can only use your own hotel's restaurant at night. Overall I was very pleased with the Riu Playacar and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Just about to check out of this hotel after a two week stay. The whole family had a really great time. The bedrooms are good and are large, we had a queen sized bed and a double pullout bed and the room was still spacious. The room had a large walk in shower and no bath. We stayed in block 7 which is the closest to the pools and the beach. The food is really good and there is plenty of choice, and the drinks are great. The beer is call two X and it is a local beer and is really good. Of the three RIU hotels in Playcar this one is by far the best. Give it a try and I am sure you will have a great stay
