well I've been to Riu resorts before and was very pleased. I have to say I was expecting more. The food was so so nothing to right home about. The speciality restaurants were nothing of that sort. The basically were half buffet style and then pick you entree get up again and get you dessert buffet stayle. Liqour was not very good. i think it was watered down, even the tequila was not up to par. The room was very basic not a junior suite set up as I have seen in some of there other locations, but it was clean and the maids kept up with it. I did have a nice experience with Scuba Caribe , Geovanni at Scuba Caribe Riu Playacar let my son try the discover dive in the swimming pool and he loved it and did some diving at the Riu Yucatan with Selena and she was great!. We did go to the Riu Yucatan a few days and seem to enjoy the beach, pool and food a little better over there. More trees and shaded areas. More action going on. More>

First time at this resort and it certainly didn't disappoint, we had an issue on arrival with two out of the five rooms smelling of damp, reception changed our rooms and kept our party close together. The rooms are light and bright only downfall is the bathroom area has no door to separate from the bedroom, as we were friends sharing this was awkward at times. The food was a plenty and catered for all tastes, people who grumble about the food must be very fussy as it all was lovely would def recommend a visit to the steak house it was gorgeous. The staff couldn't of been any friendlier, I never moved off my sunbed to get a drink as waiters came round asking all the time. The entertainment staff are some of the hardest working guys I've seen they never stop and no pressure from them to join in, aqua aerobics is really good fun I never do the activities but we did this and had such fun, Sergio, Jesus, Valentino and Marie are all really nice guys who take time out to chat too. The shows on a night aren't great, but they good but you are in Mexico if you want a massive party then go elsewhere but I shall definitely return. Saving for the next trip. More>

First visit to Playa (always stayed in Cancun and Riviera Maya). I really liked Playa but it's way more mellow. Resort is pretty and beach is nice as is pool but entertainment is really lacking. You can't even get drinks at pool or beach area in the evening. Restaurants were good and so were drinks. Service was great and I loved the bartenders. This is the perfect place to go with your own group but don't expect a wild party. More>

We have been to other all inclusive resorts in the area but have never seen a sign on the bathroom mirror stating the water is not suitable for drinking! Ever hear of a filter! The grounds were very nice, beautiful beach, nice pools, everything was clean. The room was a damp, musty smelling affair that had no door separating the bathroom. People meeting us for dinner had to wait in the hall. The day after we got home, the clothes that we did not wear were starting to make the room in the house smell like the resort room! Other people from the trip said the same thing! Food was average, nothing exciting. People who work there were all Extremely nice! Would be nicer if someone would come around pool/beach area taking drink orders. Wandered over to the RIU Tequila sports bar and was surprised to find you have to pay to play air hockey, pool, video games etc!. Last day got a call from the front desk saying our shuttle was waiting. I had to remind them that we were still waiting for them to come get the bags 20 minutes later! All in all, disappointing. Lacking character

Visited the Riu Playacar a few times for food and to use the pools during our recent holiday. The facilities of the Riu Playacar are shared with the Riu Yucatan and Riu Tequila during the day so guests can use all of them freely. We were staying at the Riu Tequila but wanted to explore the other hotels as well and compare them. The Playacar has the advantage of being right by the beach while the Tequila is a good 10 minutes walk away (though you can get a ride to the beach in their buggy). The Playacar also looks like it has been newly renovated but compared to the Tequila (a more old fashioned Mexican style) it felt very sterile and was lacking in any character. Yes, glitzy and ultra modern but it could be a hotel in Las Vegas or anywhere else. Entering the lobby area felt like going into a corporate office block or airport lounge! Positives - Lunch was great, indeed the food was excellent in all the Riu's, plus everything was very clean. Useful block of small souvenir shops plus mini supermarket just across the road. Overall we much prefered the traditional style of the Riu Tequila and to be honest we would have been disappointed if we'd stayed at the Playacar. More>
