Great beach, beautiful grounds, small resort, very convenient proximity to restaurants, pool, beach etc...great service, great night entertainment. The massages are outstanding !!! I recommend the Parasailing and diving...great air views and awesome coral reefs. The rooms are ok,great food, drinks are ok. Safe gift shops just across the street from the resort. If I have to pick the best of this hotel will be: The Service!!! Hard working employees, I tipped all the time because service was worthy; the servers take the drinks right to the beach. Room for improvement ??? the rooms, wine selections, need to add beds in the beach, hammocks, etc..in General = Very Good and convenient. More>

Overall our experience at the Riu Playacar was very good. Our room was clean and neatly appointed. We found the bartenders and waitstaff to be VERY attentive overall. The food was good and plentiful, as were the drinks. We did have a few dissappointments however. The Mexican Restaurant was a huge letdown. The service was awful and the food mediocre at best. We were seated and waited over 15 minutes for a server to notice us. It went downhill from there!! Don't waste your time. The Steakhouse on the other hand was a nice treat. Odd, since they share the same dining hall......great service and good food. We spent a great portion of our days on the beach. We watched drug dealers (who came along with the cigar salesmen) pedal their weed everyday. Only once did we see security on the beach, who did promptly have them leave. There were guests smoking weed each day and people seeking out the drug dealers. I reported this to the front desk and was pretty much blown off. "No general manager on duty"....but was assured a note would be left for him. Right. We spent a good deal of money on this trip and were disgusted with the dealing on the beach. Also......although it is a family resort, I do not believe children belong in the swim up bar pool. Babies in wet diapers sitting on tables, kids with floaties and adults drinking. Seems as if chldren should not be allowed in the bar pool....if for no other reason than their own safety. This was our 4th Riu property that we have vacationed at and we have always thought Riu's provided good value for our money. The drugs on the beach have left a bad impression for us. We are seasoned travelers and this was our 1st issue with this kind of thing. Get your security out on the beach RIU. More>

Had an amazing holidays!

Had the most amazing holidays with friends here! A week of relaxing, good food and entertainment. The hotel has been recently refurbished (Oct/2015), so it's quite modern. Check in was a breeze; we had just given a sip in our welcome drinks, and already had our bracelets, room keys, and a bellboy with a cart, ready to take our luggage to the rooms. Check out was also easy; just had to call reception about 11 a.m. (checkout limit is noon) and, in less than 10 minutes, had a bellboy at our door, to take the bags. We exchanged the bracelets and keycards for a paper, that allowed us to enjoy the hotel facilities, including food and drinks, until we left and, before we left, I asked for a bath towel at the reception, and took a shower, at the the shower rooms near the gym. Rooms offer free safe, iron/ iron board, umbrella, optics and fridge with free drinks. Rooms on ground and first floor have a balcony with table and chairs, good for relaxing (take a good mosquito spray, they bite like dinossaurs!) The staff, at restaurants, bars, cleaning and entertainment, is friendly and attentive, and do everything they can to make you feel welcome, even without giving them a "propina" (tip). If you need a cab, just ask at the reception. If you need tips on where to go or buy something, ask by the pool. The food is very good and even for me, that don't eat meat or dairy, was very easy to find something different to eat everyday. The drinks are very good, although they get stronger in alcohol, as the day turns into night... So, don't expect much alcohol in your pre-lunch cocktails LOL There is no need for reservations at the themed restaurants and no limit of number of times you can go there. Just beware of timetable and that, if you are a group, you have to ALL show up at same time, to get sitted. The rooms can get a little mold smell , due to the very humid weather, so make sure you leave a keycard in the room, so the A/C and fan are always on, during the day. Free Wi-Fi worked fine everywhere in common areas, even at the beach. At night, entertainment was good; loved the Michael Jackson show and the Fire Show. During the day, loved the poker and bingo games by the pool, the coconut party on the beach, the ceviche lunch by the pool, the decoration demo, the Mexican themed dinner: all great! The pools are nice and clean, and was always able to find a spot in the shadow easily, by the pool or at the beach. Was never too crowded. Will surely be back! More>

Without a doubt the Riu Playacar is my most favourite hotel in Playacar. It's not too big so you just don't get the queues and the crowds like you would somewhere larger. Staff are excellent however I find this with all Mexicans they are just so friendly, hardworking and give you the best service. Beach awesome, free sun beds, AI is always good with a Riu Xx More>

After a 10 hour flight which was with Thomson on their Dreamliner flight, I must admit I was impressed with their improvement of food, hospitality, and entertainment on board. The only mistake I made, was booking seat 37A and B which had no window so it felt claustaphobic in my seat, because I couldn't see anything. Had 2 weeks in Riu Playacar and what a wonderful experience. We stayed in 7208 room which is block 7 above the Tuquesa restaurant. This block is nearest the beach bar and swimming pool/beach. Very convenient to everything and then a short walk to the reception and the lobby bar Anana. The gardens are kept immaculate with plenty of wildlife that are left to roam around which was a lovely treat, this added to the wonderful experience for us. The room was very specious with separate toilet and a his and her sinks and a huge shower. The towels were changed every day and a well stocked fridge which was replaced almost every day. The mini bar was perfect and you could get ice along the corridor after a long day at the beach. The bed was so comfortable and slept surprisingly well after lazy days on the beach. The maid left lots of towel animals which was lovely and on arrival we had a bottle of campagne and chocolate strawberries for our anniversary. We tried all the restaurants and our favourites were the Steakhouse, mexican and Asian. The food throughout all the restaurants from breakfast to dinner was excellent and to suit every taste, always something to taste your palate. A thing that we really noticed was that all the alcohol were top brands and not their own. Whether this is a typical thing in Mexico, as we have never had this is a Riu hotel before. If so you had to pay for it!!!!! Since this, I have grown to like tequila. We found the Thomson trips to be very over priced. We chose to do the Speed Boat trip and the Pirate Captain Hook trip (2for1) for the second trip came to £259.. for two adults. We decided to book with the company that have a stall across the road from the hotel for 2 trips because they were so much cheaper than Thomsons. We did the Chchen-Itza and Tulum, Coba and Paradise Island (2 days trips) for 200 USD which is £154.04 GBP for two people. If we booked with Thomson it would cost £388.18. So Thomson trips are over priced and we found after speaking to people you got more from the outside companies because the reps and Thomsons are on commission. We had the most brilliant experiences and were offered drinks, sandwiches and biscuits and lots more from the outside companies on their trips. So my suggestion is to shop around before booking with Thomson. There was always plenty of beds to sit on around the pool and on the beach, we choose the beach every day because we wanted the sea breeze. The bar staff brought trays of drinks around the pool and onto the beach in sweltering sun for which we were grateful for, and felt we wanted to tip these guys. The iced coffee with brandy and baileys were lovely, every afternoon in the heat of the sun. We walked along the beach to Playacar which took 40 minutes which was nice to walk along the 5th Avenue with designer shops and lovely restaurants with their bars which was a nice change from full inclusive establishments. It cost 90 Mexican Peso which is £3.76 from hotel to 5th Avenue in Playacar if you want a change in scenery for the bars, restaurants and designer shops. The Wifi was excellent as you could get it on the beach and round the pool. it was extra if you wanted it in your room. More>
