I will not use Apple Vacations as long as they schedule there flights with Frontier Airlines. Frontier tries to charge you extra any way they can. $300 in extras and then they wanted $2.95 for a Diet Coke. I am done with Frontier.

This is our 3rd year staying at the RIU Playacar. We are very happy with this resort. It is not too big so our group of 10 can keep in touch with each other. Always a fun & relaxing time.

This is our second time staying at Riu Playacar but our third time with a Riu resort. I love that they have activities throughout the day for everyone. My kids are teenagers and are very active. They don't just want to lounge by the pool or the beach, so having volleyball, football in the sand, water polo, etc. keeps them entertained. The shows in the evening are excellent. We have never felt the need to leave the resort but we do like to explore things about the countries we are visiting. We went to Xei Ha and it was exceptionally beautiful!! would totally go there again.

Overall the hotel was good but we are not likely to return. We previously have stayed at both Palace resorts and they are much better. We had ants in our room the entire trip and the food was hit or miss. One night we ate had bad fish (smelled rotten) but thankfully did not get sick. The beach and staff are excellent! On a separate note we were disappointed by how apple vacations handled the luggage prepayments. We were never informed that you have a couple of days preflight to pay for them or you have to pay directly with Frontier at an upcharge. We felt that since this is an all inclusive package out of the country at a minimum carry ons should be included in price.

Excellent holiday destination

Just returned from a 2 week vacation, and loved every minute of it. Staff were very accommodating and they couldn’t do enough for you. There was a great selection of food and always plenty of it, I am a very fussy eater but never went without. When you were relaxing on the beach staff regularly came round with drinks on a tray (a mixture of soft and alcoholic drinks) which was great. The beach was amazing, you could always find a bed no matter what time you went down. The entertainment team were always around trying to get people to join in, not pushy at all. First night there we were greeted by Felix and throughout our holiday he always came up to us to see if everything was ok. We went on a couple of excursions, which were ok but we picked the only 2 days out of the holiday which weather was not great (catamaran trip to Isla Majures in a thunderstorm), but it was a experience. Did a snorkelling excursion 2nd to last day, saw stingray, turtles and a nurse shark. Went to 5th Avenue, which was ok but was sick of people pestering you to go in shops. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back. Wanted to try somewhere else next year but after telling daughter about our holiday looks like we will be coming back here.

This was my first all inclusive experience and it was a great one. From the ceviche making classes on the beach, to the smiles and service, I really felt welcome at all times like I was part of one big party. I do have to say that the Jade Restaurant is not as good but the buffet was the best option!

I am currently writing this review from my hotel room here in Riu Playacar on my last day here. I have been here for 6 days. I’ve been to several all inclusive hotels- some in Playa Del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Cancún, Cabo, Acapulco and in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica so I am very familiar with these types of resorts. Pulling up to the Riu Playacar, I was completely unimpressed. There was no grand entrance but I was still hopeful because of all the 4.5 stars and the reviews. When I checked into the front desk, I had requested 2 double beds. I was told that they only had 1 king size bed available but they saw that I had requested it and said they were at capacity but will move my room the next day. This is completely unacceptable. I booked my trip months in advance and I asked to speak to the hotel manager or supervisor on duty. The guy helping us out said he was the manager but there is nothing else he could do. I was extremely displeased and unhappy and told him I’ve never had this issue at any other resort. He finally “finds” a room for us and says he had to separate a family traveling together. I noticed that when he went to change our room number on our forms, he went to white out our room which had already been whited our meaning he gave our original room to someone else! I don’t know how they run their bookings but if someone reserved a room with 2 double beds in advance, wouldn’t you account for that? We get to the room and it is TINY! The 2 double beds are pushed together, not much space otherwise and there is absolutely no privacy in the bathroom. The room literally looks like a modern motel 6. The Holiday Inn is nicer than this. The sheets on the bed are discolored and stained. Every time they changed the sheets, I would notice a new stain. On the positive side, the fridge was stocked with water, soda and beer. There are also liquor taps in the room so it makes staying in a dirty room a bit less painful once you’ve started drinking. The food here is so bland and repetitive. Every morning- you eat at the breakfast buffet which is standard for all inclusive resorts but I’ve never tasted more flavorless meals at other resorts. Every morning and lunch- the meals are exactly the same. They have a Mexican breakfast station, omelette station, pancakes/French toast/doughnut station, fruit, bread, cereal. Lunch buffet was the same every day as well. It’s the standard all inclusive however nothing tasted good. I was shocked because everyone commented on how great the food was but honestly, it SUCKED. I would have rather had McDonald’s or any other fast food. The specialty restaurants were ok. I’ve had better at other resorts. The Asian and Italian restaurants were more buffet style. The pools and beach at this resort were ok. There are 3 pools and 1 pool bar. I wish there was an adults only pool because there were kids everywhere and their parents don’t seem to mind when they are screaming and running around. There was also no music during the day aside from when the entertainment team had their daily activities. The beach is nice but there is a lot of seaweed which is the norm for beaches here. The staff at this hotel is very nice and friendly. You can tell that they work very hard. At the pool and beach, there are guys constantly walking about with trays of drinks which was great. The cleaning lady in my room also did a great job. It’s not her fault that Riu doesn’t pay for clean sheets once they’ve been overused. The waiters and waitresses were also great. They work tirelessly around the clock and still manage to put a smile on their faces. I also visited their spa one of the days here. I usually like to make an appointment for a massage on all of my trips. The receptionist at the spa was very friendly and the massage therapist was great too. This spa was just a standard spa. No sauna or whirlpool or anything like that. I am not sure how this place has 4.5 stars. I would never recommend this place to any of my friends or family and will never return to a Riu property. I booked this hotel on a whim since the original resort I wanted to stay at was fully booked and I thought the Riu was a reputable brand. Aside from the hard working staff here, there were no great positive things. I cannot wait to go home tomorrow to have my first decent meal in a week!

Where to start? 2 week stay and it was brilliant. Rooms were good with air con and fans, spacious shower/toilet area and safes in the room but some rooms have no balcony and this can make washing and drying clothing very hard. Food was superb in all areas, although we did find the Asian restaurant to be bland and limited and the steak evening restaurant to incur a 90 minute wait for what turned out to be superb food. Evening entertainment for kids was pretty poor, seen better in caravan parks so RIU need to address this. The evening shows were passable but the occasional singers/events in the reception area were pretty good. Staff throughout were brilliant and polite, and all go above and beyond to ensure your stay is pleasant and enjoyable, we had a birthday on our party and the restaurant manager was Superb in having a special table made up, some colleagues to bring a cake out and sing a song in spanish, brilliant staff! Gym on site open 8-8 with a shop also, but shop prices are a rip off, better to pop over the road and purchase your requirements but this is standard for any hotel Anywhere, 2 pools with seating around and a bar/pool with direct access to the beach and short walk to an amazing sea view. Grounds are all well kept and maintained. Think the hotel could benefit from a Sports ground like other RIUs we have stayed at, football/tennis would be good. Well worth the 5 stars despite my negative comments simply due to the superb staff on site, but the entertainment really does need looking at for children as it is the only thing that would stop me returning here for what was otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
