Our Nov 2015 visit

I have traveled for 30 years for business all over north and south America and stayed approx 150 nights per year in hotels and the last 8 years traveled 3 to 4 times per year on vacation, mainly Carebean. I can honostly conclude that this hotel is one of the top 3 I stayed at. The service, staff, food, cleanliness is out of this world. They even mop the sidewalks.Everything is 100% functional. No line ups for food unlike the rest of them.Bar service is very expedient. Food is always fresh and hot.The main course is changed daily (lamb, roast beef,Peking Duck, roasted chicken, lot of fish, local favorates, cheeses, paela, super salads and desert and you name it you got it. The service is exceptional. Spent a memorable birthday with a gift from staff and a cake at dinner Thank you all and special thanks to Pamela at the reception, Roberto at the buffet, all the front desk staff and the crew at the steakhouse restaurant Truly a 5 star hotel in all aspects ts Peter and Sandra Jovic from Canada More>

Renovated Riu Playacar

My husband and I returned home on November 7th from the newly renovated Riu Playacar. It was our 4th visit to this resort and it certainly did not disappoint. For travelers who want the best value for their dollar this is the resort for you. The property is perfectly sized, not so large you can get lost and not so small making you feel crowded. All the bars, restaurants and pools are new. Eight buildings, six renovated and two new house guests. Buildings 7 & 8 are new and the closest to the beach. The staff throughout the resort work hard to provide you a "best" experience. We did have some trouble with our safe which was eventually replaced. We never did get a welcome drink upon check-in, but this was a small hiccup. Some guests may not care for the Riu's focus on buffets, but they allow guests maximum choices and variety without being locked into a specific reservation time. The Playacar really is a jewel set on a gorgeous stretch of white sand beach. Near the beach bathrooms are in two locations. The pools offer plenty of space. Lounges/chairs are plentiful on the pool deck and beach area. Riu has also made a noticeable upgrade to their evening entertainment. Shows in the past have lost their luster, now the shows are much better. Access to 5th Avenue in PDC is easy by taxi or on foot. The Pool Bar has an infinity pool and the terrific view was a highlight. If you are picky about being waited on this resort may not be for you. But if you are looking for a great time at a very good resort, give the Playacar a chance! More>

Riu....I'll give ya a 2nd chance. ..maybe....

This hotel from what I understand has been recently renovated. Complaints re: the room: There was mold around the shower drain and our shower handle was broken. With that said, flip flops were a necessity for us to shower or walk around in the room with. Other than that... Brunch place is pretty decent, but gets tiresome after while. We tried the "steak house" but thought it was a joke. Don't go thinking you'll be in a true steakhouse, it was like eating at the buffet but with table service. I preferred the buffet anyway. The Italian place is also a buffett...buffet here, buffett there...everywhere there's a buffet! The ground were kept up and it was pleasant to see. The pool areas where being treated with salt like chemicals, so not being able to swim at night was a downer. Oh well...the beach was badly awash with seaweed, probably due to the storms that were there recently or the one that was incoming. The beach area was nice, but don't expect shade while out there. If ya want shade move up to the pool areas. Personally I preferred the beach area, my companion, not so much. The drinks weren't as favorable to either of us due to the artifical juices and liquors they used. It would have been nice to see fresh coconut or pineapple juice at least, but all the drinks were extremely sweet. I wound up drinking vodka & soda water :( If you are a bourbon drinker, hopefully you're ok with Jim beam, it's the only thing they carry, haha. The buffet doesn't serve anything except wine on tap, or dos xx on tap.... or juice/sodas. Even the coffee comes out of the machine. The food selection is better for lunch and dinner, breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. The entertainment is more for children. I would suggest that if you are looking for a adult friendly place, look elsewhere. I wish there would have been more adult like things to do at this resort especially with the entertainment. It was quite boring really. I have never stayed in a Riu before and would give this chain another try before making a final decision, but I had a better stay at a non inclusive resort on a island not so far away with the holiday inn. Not bad...just not great. More>

Riu Playacar

My husband and I ended up at the Riu Playacar after the hotel we booked, Iberostar Quetzal, had a fire. The two properties are very different and although we prefer the jungle feel of the Iberostar with the animals and don't like the modern sterile look of the renovated Riu, but that's just our opinion on the style if the resort. The rest of this review will be about the resort in general, not the style so much. When we first arrived we were laced in a room on the third floor test had three smaller windows overlooking a rooftop and no balcony. I've always says as long as I haven't bed, shower and toilet I'm not picky but this room priced me wrong. It simply needed an IV pole to feel exactly like a hospital room lol. I went yo the front desman asked a young man if we could be moved and felt like I was completely ignored. I went back ten minutes later and spoke with the wonderful girl, Ivette, who checked us in and explained to her. She out our name in a list, advised us to come back the following morning, which we did, and arrangements were made to move us to a different room with a balcony. The following day I even asked Ivette if there was any chance they had mattress toppers and one was put on that afternoon and what a difference!!! I slept great almost every night!! Food. The buffet for breakfast and dinner wad pretty good, very big, but your typical buffet. I don't mind this and actually look forward to it while in Mexico. The first few mornings there were no mimosas with breakfast but by the middle of the week they had them every morning which was wonderful! The Asian dinner was a huge let down. After seeing previous reviews I expected more of a show I guess. It was dimply an Asian buffet and nothing great unfortunately. The steak dinner was great service. The ribeye was okay and the rest if the meal was good. But it was sit down service at Least and was nice. We didn't drink much but there was a stocked fridge in your room with the liquor dispensers on the wall if you want it. I would love to see a small coffee pot with coffee in the rooms though. Several times we set on the balcony during the rain etc and a cup of coffee would have been wonderful! The hotel itself was clean and nice. I do hope Riu does not change all their resorts to the modern sterile feel. We walked over to the Tequila several says and loved loved the traditional look with all the animals!! Matter of fact I wish we had stayed there! I hope the management realizes what a wonderful employee Ivette at the desk truly is! Although we would not return to this resort it would only be because of the style and modern feel. If you like modern, you will live this resort. More>
