This was our first all inclusive vacation and we chose Riu Playacar based on price and reviews. We were not in anyway disappointed. The hotel staff were all outgoing and helpful, the facilities were clean and constantly kept that way, the hotel room was comfortable and very well appointed with new fixtures, and the pool facilities were top notch. I was so pleased with our stay that I am already looking for a return trip.

First class experience for our first visit

This was my first trip booked through Apple Vacations as well as to Mexico. I could not have asked for a better experience. Starting from the booking of the trip to the transportation, to the hotel itself, the trip was perfect. The staff at Riu Resorts was so accommodating, I don't think I have seen a cleaner hotel and facility. The entertainment staff was so fun and overall, it made this a vacation I will never forget. Thank you so much to Apple Vacations and Riu Resorts.

Riu Playa, Great trip
ANTHONY D.
Mar 26 2017
My wife and I spent 7 nights with 3 other couples at the Riu Playa from March 17 to 24th. I would recommend this resort to anyone on a budget that still wants the 5 star treatment. The hotel is not a 5 star resort but, for the price of a 7 night trip, it is perfect! Rooms, pool area, beach are great. Workers are very happy and always willing to help. No major issues for any of the 4 couples during the week. My biggest complaint was the food was never hot. Luke warm most of the time. However, the food was good (not great, good). Compared to other resorts in Cancun, the Riu food is top notch. We have been to Mexico/Cancun approx. 10 times and we will be returning to the Riu. Most likely the Riu Palace next time so we can have room service. Again, great value!!

We loved the size of the hotel. We loved the daily activities and the size of the pools. The only thing we didn't like was the food. We didn't starve but everything seemed to be overlooked and dry. If you could put the Riu Yucatán food in the playacar it would be the perfect place.

Great place to stay. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They work extremely hard. Lots of fun activities you can get involved in or you could just relax and enjoy the sun. The beach was well taken care of. The food was good, a bit repetitive but enough of a variety for everyone to find something they'd like. Unfortunately, my wife got food poisoning for the last 36hrs of our vacation. She thinks it was from the salad. We met another gentleman who also got food poisoning and thought it was from the salad. It may have been rinsed in no potable water. So skip the salad!

Moldy, Humid and Restrooms
BETTY H.
Jan 26 2017
The first two nights we felt like we were sleeping in a wet bed. Then we noticed mold around door trim. We asked to be moved because after two nights our faces were swollen in the morning. Sure it was from the mold and horrible nights sleep. We were moved to another room which was a lot nicer and no smell of mold. We asked for first floor when we booked the trip because my husband has problems with his hip. They put us on second floor. When they moved us they put us on second floor that was above the buffet. That was another flight of steps which was more like the third floor. After we moved into the new room, my husband went out on the porch which faced the other resort. We went out on the deck and there were two air conditioner blowers which ran most of the time. We couldn't hear it in the room but needless to say, they might as well not have had a porch. Also at the pool there were only two stalls in the women's restroom Which was used for beach and pool people. Most of the time there was a line. The bar tenders were great and activities around pool fun. We had a good time but they need to work on the cooling system because it doesn't take enough humidity out and more bathrooms by the pool. We will not go back again.

Mediochre Experience

Hotel was very clean, room was very clean. Both the Italian and Steakhouse restaurants were subpar. Veggie lasagna was inedible (overcooked and old) and ribeye steak was not tender at all. Thin cut, too. Entertainment at this hotel was not very good either. The Buffet for all meals was just ok. Nothing outstanding at all. Service was just ok. However, the Rio Yucatan had a WONDERFUL DINNER BUFFET WITH GREAT WHITE LINEN SERVICE! I guess I was expecting more. I.e., better food and service. However, the beach and pools were excellent. In my opinion, I think this hotel is not a "6 golden apple" experience. Also, Gabriella from Apple was a no show on the day she told us she was going to be there. We looked at waited for her from 2:30-4pm. The timeframe she gave to us in writing!!! The hotel called her, too, no answer. When we asked her about it the next day, she said she was there, but had to leave early. We said that you weren't there at all and the hotel tried to call you. She didn't have an answer for that. Bad experience.

The overall review is fair for this hotel. It definitely is what you pay for BUT I paid extra for an oceanview room. Although I saw the ocean, I don't believe amenities were worth the it. There is no WIFI in the rooms of this hotel nor much of the hotel. It's spotty at the pool and the lobby. It should not be marketed with WIFI if not throughout. You can't even call home without extra payment or read a book on a device. The mini fridge leaked. The fire alarms went off often 2x a day because someone was smoking on the floor and that seemed ok to ALL staff. The door fell off my closet and cut and bruised my foot. Although they came up to put it back up it barely worked to open and close which the safe was behind. The food was OK. A great deal was buffet. Although the steak house had ala carte it was a set menu. The italian menu was the same every night. The Asian was all buffet. It was difficult to get coffee served in the morning to your table. There was NO Apple Representative at our hotel the entire stay. As well, there was no representative to get in contact with during the stay. I paid for a direct to/from hotel which didn't appear to be anything different then what was included. I had others in my van, sat in the back of the van, crawled over others in the van both ways. This was missold. Overall, wouldn't stay in this hotel again. I'd pay extra to stay somewhere else. The beach was nice, clean, no rocks. There didn't appear to be enough chairs for the entire resort. The resort wasn't overly crowded and difficult to get a beach chair.

We stayed at the Riu Playacar for two weeks in October 2017 and from our experience, this is one of the best hotels we have stayed in. It had recently been refurbished and the standard of the rooms was very high. Optics were provided in the room and the fridge was re-stocked every two days with alcohol, water and soft drinks. The room was kept spotless by Jesus, our regular cleaner who was very friendly and every day left a different animal made of towels on the bed, a lovely touch! All the staff at the hotel seemed to work amazingly hard, non-stop, like an army of workers doing their best to make sure everything was perfect for the guests. The free wi-fi in the hotel was exceptional and the signal was strong in our room and ranged well outside the hotel to the beach. The location was very good, 30 mins walk to Playa del Carmen (although wouldn't advise this because of the heat and humidity) or 10 mins in a taxi (£6). There were five restaurants in total of which we tried threem The Jade (Asian restaurant) La Palma (the main restaurant) and the Mexican/Steak restaurant. We tended to go back to the main restaurant, however, as this was a buffet and the variety and choice of food was phenomenal and every day was a different themed menu. The waiters were, again, eager to please and very helpful. Entertainment was provided during the day and every evening. We didn't take advantage of this every day, but the quality of the entertainment was of a reasonable standard. Staying at this hotel also gave us the option to also use the facilities of two other hotels within walking distance - the Riu Yucatan and the Riu Tequillam both excellent hotels in their own right. We used the Sports Bar in the Riu Tequilla on a number of occasions - unfortunately the performance of the football teams did not match the excellence of the hotels! We used the gym in the hotel on a number of occasions which was needed after all the food we had eaten!! If you would like any more information feel free to contact me, but we will definitely be visiting this hotel again!

The property is amazing. Fairly new renovation of the whole property with 3 pools, 1 with a swim up bar, and a clean spacious beachfront. Lots of loungers all around the pool and beach. Every staff member that we encountered was friendly and helpful, which is was a big plus for first time visitors. From check in to check out we appreciated everything Playacar had to offer. The housekeeping staff were efficient, the desk staff, waitstaff and bar staff were all so friendly and everything was clean and comfortable. All of the food options were delicious, especially international night at the buffet and the Mexican restaurant. We were so happy with our stay we are already looking at a return trip. I can honestly say that there were no negatives to our stay that I can recall.

We stayed at the Riu Playacar for 2 weeks. Possibly the best holiday i've been on & one of the best hotels i've stayed at. Booked through TUI UK and only had 1 minor issue with them changing our flight times 5 days before travelling. Check In Everything was ready when we got to the hotel, including a lovely welcome cocktail. Reception staff were friendly & all room keys, towel keys, Wi Fi passwords & hotel information provided within 5 minutes of arriving. Bags taken to the rooms by concierge to allow you to familiarise yourself with your surroundings. Rooms Rooms are immaculately clean & have every ammenity you require for an enjoyable stay. We were located in block 8 (newest block) and looked onto one of the pools. Seperate bathroom with hairdryer, shower gel & other toiletries. Mini bar & drinks dispenser stocked every other day, although didn't really need these as only 2 minutes to the pool bar which is open till 6pm. I did sample the vodka but the taste not to my liking. Rooms are cleaned every day to a very high standard. Restaurants Choice of main buffet & 4 a la carte restaurants. There was something for even the fussiest of eaters. Food at lunch did become a little repetitive but always something to satisfy your hunger. Entertainment Again there is something for everyone, from spanish lessons, cocktail masterclasses, zumba, pool parties & much more. The entertainment team headed up by Alex & Valentino do a fantastic job keeping guests entertained throughout the day. Special mention to DJ Pablo, Ricardo, Jesus & Fernando who took the time to get to know you on a personal level. The beauty about the location of this hotel is that a 5 min taxi ride & your taken to Playa Del Carmen where you have an abundance of shops, bars & restaurants to explore. You can also catch a ferry over to Cozumel. We explored the Riu Yucatan & Tequila on our trip & feel the Playacar is the best hotel in the area, csn't comment on the 2 palace hotels but would definitely return to the Playacar without doubt. Looking to book our return trip already. For anyone contemplating this hotel you won't be dissappointed.
