2.5 resort! Not worth it!

One star for the pools, one.five star for the beach! We are expecting at least a 4 star but the resort was nothing great. I wish we would've paid a little extra and did the Royalton in Cancun! PROS: + The location is minutes from Playa Del Carmen 5th Ave! Taxi was never more than 5$ USD. + Beach was beautiful as a Mexican beach could be. Beach was clean, always chairs available! + Always open room in the pools CONS: - The food was HORRIBLE! Sure they have a lot of choices but they are just like cafeteria food. Even the french fries were small and had a funny taste. This was HUGE being that it is an all inclusive!! We will NEVER come back to this resort for this reason entirely. Food was not hot! Meats tasted funny. Maybe we were just spoiled from being at higher end resorts! - OUR SHOWER SMELLED LIKE HUMAN SEWAGE! It was HORRIBLE! Said something to a woman and she acted like she has no idea. The stench was disgusting! - Shower only had hot water during the day -- towards the night, barely warm was available. We tried to leave the resort on Sunday and the management team was not in apparently to give us a refund. THIS IS A 24 HOUR RESORT!!!! Expedia told us we had to stay in order not to lose our money!!! We were essentially stuck. This resort is below average. Prepare to be dissapointed if you have been to 4 star + resorts. The only thing going for it are the pools, beach, location. Other than that, the rooms feel cold and uncomfortable. Hard chair seating beyond the bed. We are really suprised by the ratings that they aren't lower. I guess if you have been to Mexico before you will definitely know there are MUCH and MANY better options than this place!!! They could care less how your stay was. Never asked.

We visited this hotel for drinks and lunch a few times whilst staying at the RIU Yucatan. We had called in 18 months ago but didnt rate it then. The transformation is amazing. I hardly recognised it as the same place. When we were booking for this last holiday the Playacar came up and I had refused to consider it as I didnt know it had been so dramatically changed. We will definitely consider it in the future.

Third Visit--Home Sweet Home!

Another wonderful stay at my Mexican home, Riu Playacar! Carlos checked me in with a friendly smile and a cold welcome cocktail. He gave me room 4123 with a huge king bed instead of two doubles. Once again, I couldn't get enough of the lovely scent coming from the A/C vents. It never fails to make me feel at home. The entire hotel was decorated for the Day of the Dead and Halloween. All the servers were in costume. My server, Abel, had my drink memorized from day one. If you sit outside closer to the stairs, Abel will take great care of you. Riu is known for great food, and this visit was no exception. Beautiful fruit sculptures, chocolate displays, carved pumpkins etc. The bacon tasted better than last year. The omelet station and smoothie bar were lovely as usual. Coconut ice cream amazed the taste buds all over again. The tortie cat was still around, along with a few new friends. The famous Playacar beach was completely clear of seaweed this year. I went snorkeling, and saw three sea turtles and two stingrays all within one hour! Our guide went down and picked up a gorgeous conch shell for everyone to see. My favorite excursion was Chichen Itza Express. We learned a great deal about Mayan history and traditions. Another fun one was the Royal Dophin Swim in Puerto Aventuras. Close encounters with a sea lion, feeding an 800 lb manatee, followed by a catamaran ride. The best nighttime shows were Mexican Folklore, Michael Jackson, and Circus night. Do not miss the Sing and Gargle act--absolutely hysterical! Try singing La Cucaracha with a mouth full of tequila and you will see why :o)

Brilliant holiday and stay!

Stayed in September 2016 for 11 nights. Cannot really fault the Riu hotels group and the Playacar hotel was fantastic! Massive resort but plenty of sun beds round by the pool and on the beach. The hotel puts on so much activities and entertainment, to keep all guests occupied, and there is a spa and a gym on site. You can use the majority of the facilities at the other Riu hotels nearby (except for Riu Palace hotels). Staff were so friendly and would do anything for you. The choice of food was fantastic and some of the restaurants put on themed nights and have special events. This was the first time we have gone all inclusive so we didn't know what to expect but we loved it. Great pool bar and selection of food and snacks during the day, hotel is modern and clean. Room was really nice, great air con so you can avoid the humidity, and also has a mini bar and selection of drinks in each room. Playa de Carman is a 5 minute taxi ride away and is only 100 pesos or a 20 minute walk, worth visiting as good selection of shops, etc. Hotel and area felt safe and beach was fantastic, so made a great first stay in Mexico! Airport is about and hour away, and there is a fee of 1000 pesos for leaving the country each.

First visit to Mexico stayed in hotel Riu Playacar November 14 to 21 2016,didnt know what to expect since we knew the hotel had recently been refurbished modernized. Arrived 7pm Mexico time welcome arrival quick booking in hotel small but very friendly. Room clean, tidy, drinks stocked up every two days, apart from the wine only one bottle on arrival in room. Entertainment was more aimed at the younger couples rarely did we see the entertainers interact with older couples. Food was varied buffet not always excellent and often luke warm, snacks over the day poor standard and not varied, all drinks were good and staff very polite, outside areas very clean and well maintained.
