Great honeymoon spot

Sep 14 2017
My wife and I spend 4 days at the RIU Palace, Riviera Maya last week. It was an incredible 4 days. Pool and beach were top notch. Of course it helped that we had perfect weather. Food options were good. Japanese and Fushion restaurants took the cake! (pants and shoes required for men). The food was great at both. You will not leave hungry at any of the restaurants. No reservations required for any of them. We did have to wait about 30 mins for a table at the fusion restaurant. The ONLY complaint we had about the entire week was the air conditioning was apparently not working at the fushion restaurant. With that, in addition to the 30 min wait, made it less than perfect. But the food was still excellent! Overall- I would definitely recommend this resort to other families!

Beautiful resort, but a few drawbacks...

Sep 12 2017
The hotel is absolutely beautiful but one problem were the cockroaches in the room. I killed 3 of them during our stay. Also the hotel needs some renovations; there were loose tiles in the room & on the balcony. Otherwise, the service & food were excellent & the staff is very friendly.

Nice Hotel

The hotel lobby, court yard, bars, restuarants, beach, food, drinks, and pool were all very nice, no complaints there. The hotel rooms need some improvements. We had some ants in our room that we did not know where they were coming from and the room seemed a bit dated. Overall the hotel was nice.

king size bed

Aug 24 2017
I made reservations for all 6 of us staying in 3 rooms, requesting all king size beds. got there and my room was two queen beds, we are a gay couple who have stayed there 2 times before,,,, our comfort level was shattered from our prior visits. we were promptly put into another room, the room smelled all week and upon using the spa tub a brown sludge came out of jets when it was turned on ,,, the bed ruffle was dirty and I went to the front desk and asked for these things to be attended to,,,, the room looked clean and the maid was always making things look good. however.... the smell was there all week and dust ruffle was dirty. I have never made a compliant about this riu and would love to go back again , we have been told it is up for a makeover next year, I'm hesitant to go back. I hope this helps someone else as a gay couple who are married I am 53 and my husband is a 44 year old episcopal priest. we travel twice a year. I hope this helps

I have two complaints. Every morning bright and early I would be awakened by remodeling of the room next door. They should have waitied until after 10am or not book guest next to a room that is being worked on. the end complaint is again bright and early the maid service would be rolling their carts down the hallway on the ceramic tile floors which made a terrible racket wakening us up every morning around 6am. The walls are very thin and you can hear anyone talking and anything going down the hallways.

Too much seaweed -- Not enough air conditioning -- Food okay

Aug 11 2017
It was a nice trip, there were definitely pros and cons. Pros Beautiful weather Great snorkeling excursion Hotel staff was nice Direct flight was great Free WiFi at hotel Cons Seaweed! Transportation from airport to hotel was almost 3 hours! -- next time we will not share transportation! Food was okay. We ate at all the specialty restaurants so it was nice to change it up every night because of the variety. Our A/C didn't work night 2 so on day 3 they switched our room to a suite -- which must have been for honeymooners because it only had one king size bed... However we all managed to fit in the bed. I was happy to switch rooms because our first room had weird little bugs in it.

Great location and staff - hotel needs upgrades
MARGARET W.
Aug 10 2017
I have stayed at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya four times. Each time the service provided by the staff has been excellent. The hotel has been too with the exception of this last trip. The hotel is in dire need of a remodel and upgrade. Tiles are missing from the pool, fixtures are loose in the bathrooms, a light cover in the pool was attached with a zip tie, there is lots of rust around light fixtures and the pool area, the sheets on the bed were like sandpaper, there was water damage in several areas of the hotel and overall the place is just looking dated and worn down. That being said the grounds were still immaculate and the beach area is beautiful. They are supposedly scheduled for a remodel in 2018; however, we heard rumors it may not happen next year. That would be a mistake in my opinion. If there is not a remodel we may look at other locations for our next trip.

Pool had sand, slippery steps into pool from many guests suntan lotion, buffet food needed a little more spices not too much, tour information not when you check in but when you are planning your trip, maybe have a shuttle to go to town instead of looking for a cab. The food in the specialty restaurants were excellent, son liked trying the different specialty meats. I know resorts are safe but never saw security as now days everyone needs to be on alert everywhere.

Roaches in the lower level rooms
Amal K,
Wed Nov 08 15:30:28 EST 2017
The only reason that I’m giving this hotel 3 stars is the good food and great staff in the restaurants. Rodrigo is extremely professional and makes you feel welcomed. He ensures that all aspects of your meal are perfect. He also made sure that the rest of the staff is on point. On the other hand, when I went to the front lobby to speak with the manager (Esteban) about the roaches in our room, his response to me was “we are in the jungle, what did you expect”. I have been to several hotels in Mexico and NONE had roaches. I expect to see other types of insects at the resort, however roaches was NOT on my list and it’s unacceptable. They had housekeeping come clean the room and spray raid. They kindly left me the can as if I want to spend my vacation killing roaches. It was absolutely disgusting. I have two children (one who hasn’t started walking yet and picks up everything off of the floor). I saw roaches in the bathroom around our toothbrushes, baby bottles, bottle cleaner and other baby products. We were eventually moved to the second floor where Esteban assured us that people complain less about roaches on higher levels since roaches live in the grass. I will never come back to this resort. I’m extremely disappointed in the Riu although it’s one resort chain I’ve had much success with in the past. With all the money we pay them, they need to hire an exterminator to eliminate the infestation. Raid just isn’t cutting it.

Grat stay!

We visited in December '16 for 10 nights. We had an initial hiccup with our room, it had a musty smell and right opposite our balcony there was some building work going on at the neighbouring hotel. I brought this to the attention of the reception staff and they moved us to another room on the other side which was perfect! The rooms were big and spacious with a free mini bar and optics! I would have liked a kettle to be able to make a cup of tea but there was only a coffee machine. The balcony was spacious too. The food in all of the restaurants was first class, the cocktails were plentiful and the staff were amazing! Would definitely stay again.

THEFT at RIU Palace Riviera Maya

My husband and I arrived at the palace on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 for our 27 year anniversary. We had a leak in our ceiling. Maintenance came to fix it. The next morning we went to breakfast then went back to the room to get changed to go for a walk. We commented to each other that the maid had already made up the room. My husband was talking to his friend on his cell phone and the call got dropped. I asked him if he was brining his phone on the walk, he said no it needed to charge. He put the phone on the nightstand just as his friend, whose call was dropped, texted him to call him back later. That text was at 10:30 am. We walked, went sightseeing, we ate lunch and then hung out at the pool. At 3:00 my husband went back to the room to get his phone and it was gone. We tried using "find my iphone" but the phone was turned off. We went to the front desk and made a report with Alex. Him and the front desk were not concerned AT ALL, it was as if we said our pillows were too hard..... they DID NOT CARE. We returned to the room and security guy came to check our card reader on the door. He left. We went back to gather our towels at the poolside and the security guy was talking to another employee..... later in the week we realized he was a mini-bar room stocker..... We were given the managers name Ignacio Gonzalez, Subdirector of RIU Palace Riviera Maya. Ignacio confirmed the ONLY person who entered our room from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm was the MINI-BAR ROOM STOCKER!!!!!!. My husband checked in with Ignacio everyday. Ignacio told my husband he was trying to get the phone back from the employee, but was sure we weren't getting it back. He also said he was firing that employee. We asked Ignacio about them contacting the police. Ignacio said we would have to go there ourselves and it would be a waste of time. I did not want to leave the resort now especially going to the police. I feel we would have been a target. My husband was also in touch with Javier, a director at the hotel, and Javier was even more disconnected and not concerned whatsoever. Ignacio gave us the RIU customer email address and told us we had to contact them ourselves and he would give his report too. We got our response back from RIU customer service and were told it was our fault that it wasn't in the safe....remember the maid was already there and gone. Are we supposed to put our whole luggage into the safe???...... we expect the belongings in our locked room will be safe and the RIU employees are NOT going to steal from the guests. It's not like we lost the phone at the pool, on a beach chair etc.... it was in our LOCKED room. RIU confirmed it was stolen by this employee and still did not give us any compensation. We returned home and had to spend hundreds of dollars for a new IPHONE 7 plus and case. we did not only lose our phone we lost contacts, pictures, messages. I also lost a feeling of security.... that night the phone was stolen, I stacked suitcases in front of the door.... I was afraid if they would come back. I made them change our room too. We have been to 18 other resorts.... this is the first time this has ever happened to us. It was a resort employee who stole from us... not a random guest. That's why we feel they should compensate us. This is the 2nd RIU we have been to and it will definitely be our LAST. We will NEVER go to an RIU again due to the RIU management, Ignacio Gonzalez, Subdirector of RIU Palace Riviera Maya, and he uncaring about the theft..... as if it was actually acceptable behavior that didn't deserve any attention. My husband filmed it and is going to post on Youtube.

Superb hotel & fantastic staff!

My wife & I stayed here for 2 weeks in late October & were not disappointed in any way, The hotel is about 45 mins from Cancun & leads directly onto a gorgeous white sandy beach with shallow waters & many sun loungers both on the beach & also under the palm trees which offer shade from the midday sun. There are various water sports available from here & in the local area. The hotel itself is colonial in style with lots of beautiful wood & large, comfortable lounge areas which are well air conditioned & with many ceiling fans The hotel has several speciality quality restaurants on site including our own personal favourite, a Japanese restaurant. The main restaurant has extensive buffets for every meal with a massive range of international food choices which change every day. Everything from lobster or steaks to a burger! Easily the best AI choice we have had anywhere. To finish things off there are some very artistic ice & fruit sculptures decorating the buffet tables All of the staff everywhere in the hotel are incredibly friendly & attentive & they genuinely appear to be happy in their work - I don't think anyone ever passed us without a cheery "hola" being called out to us.Unlike many such resorts, they aren't constantly hanging around for tips but they do definitely deserve all they ones they get as they are so friendly, pleasant & efficient Our room was well furnished with a balcony, king size bed & whirlpool bath - even a free bar with a range of spirits plus a fridge with chilled beers & Pepsi etc. The daily housekeeping was very good & a nice touch were the towel sculptures left on the bed each day - rabbits, swans, octupus, sealions etc, together with chocolates left at turn down in the evening. Entertainment was provided each night including traditional Mexican music to a most proficient rock band who' s brave repertoire included Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Beatles & Queen! To sum it up: gorgeous resort, lovely friendly staff, great food & fantastic memories that will live with us forever. Thank you Mexico!
