The hotel was nice but needed updating. The food was okay but there seemed to be more "sick" people than usual. This was our sixth trip to Punta Cana and this is the sickest we had been. Overall we would give this vacation a fair.

The hotel is in much need The hotel is in need of update and repair. Lots of tiles missing in the pool! The maid service was very poor. didn't replace coffee, sugar and creamer. One day they even took one coffee cup and never replaced it. I have stayed at many Riu's and this was the poorest service I have ever received in my room.

My experience at the Riu Palace Punta Cana was overall extremely pleasant and exactly what I had in mind when booking the vacation. But, I had a very unfortunate encounter with the Amstar, who apparently was also in charge of Apple Vacations Representative. Following the directions on all my travel documents, I went to the lobby 24 hours before our check out to confirm our transportation to the airport early the following morning. I was very disappointed with the lack of professionalism and overall rudeness of the representative, Cesar Fernandez. He claimed that since we hadn't gone to the welcome reception back on our first full day, at 9:30 am, after flying internationally, and calling our room several times before 9 am, that he couldn't guarantee secured transportation to the airport. He was very rude and said if we wanted transportation to the airport, we would have to come down to the lobby the following morning at 8:30 am so he could then check if there was something he could do about our transportation. The airport transfer has already been paid for at this point so I tell him about this but he insisted that it was required that I come down to the welcome reception at the beginning of our vacation to secure airport transfer. We tried fixing this issue on the spot but he claimed he had to leave and was not returning that day. This was at about 11 am. Unfortunately, this encounter put a damper on my last day of vacation. Since he had left for the day, I spent a better part of the day trying to figure out another way to get me and my family to the airport the following day in order to make our flight. I decided to go back to the lobby and speak with the hotel staff who very graciously called Apple Vacations and confirmed our already standing transfer information set for 9:55 am. It was even disappointing to see how quickly they resolved the issue because that showed that the entire unpleasant encounter could have been avoided. I wish I would not have had to write so much about this singular unpleasant experience because the rest of the vacation was perfect! The staff were so friendly and attentive. The food was unbelievable. The pictures on the Apple Vacations website reflect very closely to what we saw when we got there. Absolutely beautiful that the pictures don't do it justice!

Beautiful Place, service spotty, food average

This place is beautiful, the buildings grounds and beach are spectacular. The food is okay, but repetitive, we were tired of most of it by the fourth day. The buffet staff were the best employees in the place, but the formal restaurant staff was hit and miss at best. The biggest single issue we had was with the Apple Vacations rep in the hotel, Cesar Fernandez. He told us when we had our first meeting with him that there was a free shuttle to downtown Punta Cana twice a day he could get us on if we wanted to go shopping. We signed up for a trip and instead of going to downtown Punta Cana he sent us to some cut-rate duty free shop with a cigar store attached. I didnt want to take four hours out of my vacation to go to a place I can hit in the airport on the way home. I dont know if he was getting a kickback from them for sending people, or if Apple signed off on this, but it was a bait and switch and fraud. He claimed that he never told us downtown Punta Cana, but both I and my wife heard him very clearly. Just beware on that.

Half of our group of 29 people got sick with stomach issues and diarrhea within 2 days after arrival. We linked it back to a common cause of food cleanliness. There was mold in some rooms. There were cockroaches in some rooms. Food selections at all restaurants were underwhelming.

Apple is just as at fault!

When using Apple, I always and have always made it very clear that I ONLY want ocean view rooms. Apple representative assured me all I would need to do is explain to the desk clerk that I requested an ocean view room. The desk clerk told me that for $35 more per day (between him and me) he would move me. That was not an option I would agree to. Therefore I received a room with a foul odor, overlooking an alley.

One of the worst experiences that I have overall.

I have traveled vastly in my life and appreciate good service and good hospitality. This resort was a mixed bag of each of the two. The room quality was very sub par. It smelled, had active mold growth, and bugs. The food was horrible, absolutely horrible. Most of our 30 person party suffered from serious stomach (diarrhea) issues, that didn't stop once we returned home. The service at the food and bar areas was great. Kudos to Sandy Santana in the buffet area. He is an extreme asset. The entertainment was soso. I would not return to this resort again. Our experience was horrible. It needs to many upgrades and improvements to list. The grounds and outside facades are beautiful. I would have preferred to sleep in a tent on the grounds.

Our recent stay at the Riu Plaza Punta Cana

We recently stayed at the Riu Plaza Punta Cana for a destination wedding. From day 1 the stay was akward, the check in process took forever and the clerk who helped us seemed very sketchy and rude. We didn't want to give him our credit card he was so odd. When we got to our room we were blasted with an over whelming smell of some kind of cleaner, followed by a very strong musty smell. I could go on and on but to keep this short I'll give a brief run down....Our room had mold throughout, we had roaches in our room I woke up to one on my back, drinks were ordered and never delivered or a totally different drink was returned, the pool had a layer of scum on it, the food was definitely sub par, shopping at the stores was crazy nothing had a price on it and we were aproached with different outrageous prices eventually to haggle down to something reasonable. We have been home for 4 days now and my wife and other members of our party have been sick with stomach issues, cramping and severe diarrhea. We will definitely not be returning and not recommending this destination to anyone.

The flights went smooth and ran ahead of schedule. The Riu was what I expected after reading the reviews. It is in need of repairs and updating. Check in took a while at the hotel but they did have mimosa sitting on the counter for you to grab. Hotel staff didn't tell us about them, another guest did. Our room was dirty and lights didn't work. I went to front desk and asked to be switched and it was done promptly. The next room was 3042 and better with a partial ocean view of sunrise in the morning. There was. The workers at the swim up bar were arguing amongst themselves when we tried to get our first drink at the resort. Finally they noticed us and we were served. Drinks were so so. You could drink all day and never felt a thing. As previous reviews, the wine was not even palatable for me as that Is what I drink. The workers work very hard to keep the place clean and the buffet and dining were well taken care of. The quality of food was good. I didn't get sick but my girls both had some nausea probably form the type and quantities we were eating. I also wished that the hotel staff would have informed me of the steak restaurant being closed on Sat due to a wedding. We would have tried it another night. Over all the beach was the best part. Also, the shuttle drivers were great and very helpful.

An overall good stay. Beautiful resort. You could play at the neighbouring RIUs with the exception of the Riu Palace Macao which seemed much more upscale. Front desk was pleasant but we were not given instruction on how to get to our room. This could have been because we didn't need or want porter service? Rooms are tired (closing for Reno in August 2018) but, very clean. Staff were cheerful and helpful...depending on their roles some issues with language did occur (cleaning staff, porters) Beautiful, beach, no lack of chairs or shade. One large pool. Pool/beach activities mediocre. The staff really did try but it got old after a week. Poolexercises were great. Specialty restaurants all very good except for steak house. Ironically, the steak was stellar at the Japanese restaurant. We only used the buffet once other than breakfast every day. There seemed to be lots of variety. Not sure that I would recommend this resort for people with food allergies. I had trouble being understood about my shellfish allergy so,avoided some foods with unknown ingredients. Food could be labelled better. We didn't use room service. We enjoyed our week. The weather was hot and humid. 29 feeling like 41.

Great two week getaway!

Firstly I would like to start by commenting on the negative press and reviews which have been left by others using this site. Of course, and I respect, everyone is entitled to their own opinions but some have gone a little to far. Points to address: - Food; we experienced lovely food and enjoyed the buffet main restaurant mainly during our stay. There was a few members of our group with suffered with bad stomachs however this did not last very long. IF you do have a weak constitution take Immodium with you, these will help. I do not put the problems down to the food, but mainly the fact you are drinking/eating way more than you normally would at home. All food experienced was cooked through and tasted lovely. - Damp in Rooms; we had 5 rooms in our group and yes they did smell of damp. Some had some small damp patches coming through on the walls but nothing significant. I did not find this to be an extreme problem like others on here (ahem), as you would probably have damp in your establishment if you went through two Cat 4/5 Hurricanes within two months! Realistically, yes it is a problem but not one anyone should whinge about purely down to the weather. - Refurb; There was talk on here the Hotel is in-line to have a full refurb. As far as I know its still the same as when it was built in 2006 so has weathered fairly well in 11 years in my eyes. Confirmation of the refurb was confirmed by Management whilst we were there, advising Apr18 - Oct18 will be closed for the works to be completed. In all honesty, would love to return after this has been done. - Loud Music; I have seen many many comments about the loudness of the music and mostly can agree it is annoying if you are trying to relax on the beach and all you have is 50 Cent blaring out all day. However, again lets look at the facts.....music starts around 1130, stops at 1400-1500 for lunch, so you DO get a few hours of peace and quiet. However, I would like to state, we stayed quite a way away from the main pool bar where the music was, and it was so loud we could hear it clearly over 100m away. Note to Hotel Management; its OK to have music, but turn it down a little as you have other guests to think about. - Staff; Now this is an important point. Never on any holiday I have been on before have I felt so welcomed, part of the family, included, and ultimately treated like royalty. The staff are all so friendly, most speak a good amount of English and always ensure you are having a wonderful time. This really made the holiday superb and I would like to thank all of the staff again, pointing out Chagi, Francesca, Hose1 for their exceptional service. - Hotel itself; Well equipped, very grand'e, huge. Well laid out, Pools are amazing, lunch restaurant and pool bar with good service with loads of drink choices. Reading the reviews on here makes me slightly mad. Lots of Yanks moaning about damp etc...but saying they would go back.....talk about contradictory! If you didn't like it that much why bother saying you would go back FFS! Thanks for Reading :)

Beautiful Resort Best things were food , location & staff. many plumbing problems, but always taken are of. Shows were subpar, poolbar kinnda seemed like a stew of mixed people and body fluids if you get my drift, people drinking for hours, but not leaving pool ??? But overall, can't complain Will go again when/of money allows.

Usually we go to the Riu Palace hotels as they are the best from all Riu resorts. Some people do not like Rius but what not to like? We’ve been to six different Riu resorts in Mexico, Aruba and Dominican. This year my husband wanted to go to Riu Palace Punta Cana again, because we went there twice, and we loved this place. We went to Riu Palace Bavaro for a change, and we had a great week of relaxation, great food and entertainment in the luxury resort. I agree with others that this resort needs some renovation. I would not change it so much, just do painting and main reno but do not change its original look. The lobby defers from other Riu resorts with its old fashion look, nice paintings on the walls, antique looking furniture and carpets on the floors. When you walk in to the lobby, you’ll see a luxury lightening feature, lots of lights, and you’ll feel like a millionaire (if you are not) until you stay there. The staff is very nice, the food is very good, and the beach is amazing. Those people who complained about all these things might paid a cheap price in the out of season times when half of restaurants are closed, not many people around, and half of the resort is empty. We went there in July and September and both times we had a great vacation at Riu Palace Punta Cana. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the resort, we had internet connection even at the beach where I had phone calls and happy birthday emails while lying at the beach and drinking champagne. By the way, drinks served not only at the pool area, they provided at the beach as well. Overall, we love Riu resorts, and we’ll definitely come back to this one again.

Very classy

Let me start by asking those who wrote bad reviews for this hotel, what hotel did you stay at it's obvious you didn't stay at the Rio Palace Punta Cana, we've stayed at Riu hotels all over the Caribbean 18 in fact and always the service was first class, now back to the Rui Palace Punta Cana this place it truly a palace from the moment you arrive and see it for the first time it's like wow, the beautiful lobby takes you back in time it's breathtaking, the staff are all very happy to bend over backwards for you that says a lot very friendly, the property is so beautiful and clean, the pool has 4 whirlpools built in, swim up bar very nice, the beach is clean well kept and the best thing lots of shade due to the beautiful coconut trees, the food I have to say was surprisingly very very good , our Junior suite was clean and comfortable first class all the way, please don't pay attention to negative reviews not true, this hotel is actually very beautiful and pleasant to stay at no disappointments.
