nice, but....

This was our second trip to Riu Palace in the Bahamas. We had a good time hanging around the new pools, but if you want to get a chair, you have to go down around 6:00 in the morning and put a towel on the chair that you want to save, if you wait till 7:30, all the chairs will have been taken. The first time we went was in 03/17 and it was not an adults only resort, this year they made it an adults only resort and it was nice not having little kids throwing balls around in the pool as your trying to relax, don't get me wrong, we have 7 grand kids, when we go on vacation though, we like to relax. The resort closed for three months last year and underwent a major renovation. They really did a nice job on the place with one exception. They use to have a lobby bar that was such a nice place to spend time and meet people. For some reason they eliminated the lobby bar and now the only bar you can get a drink in after 6:00 pm is the sports bar. As you would assume, and you would be right, this bar gets very crowded and loud. For that reason alone, we will be trying a different place next year

Just returned from 4 night stay at the RIU and we had a wonderful trip! After reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried but found the hotel to be way above what I expected. I would suggest they have a better system for reservations in the A La carte dining rooms so people know where and when they are eating, and maybe heat the pool bar. Some reviews said the drinks were watered down but that was not an issue at all. And they had real coffee!! Made with an espresso machine ! Other then that we felt that the staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms was clean ~we had a fabulous view of the ocean and Atlantis from our 11th floor balcony. I am sure some people would not like that you see into the back side of Atlantis but that did not bother me. We loved that we could easily cut through Atlantis at night to go to the marina village or the casino. We also walked to the ferry from the hotel within about 10-15 mins and spent about 2 hours in Nassau which is all you need. The ferry was $8 round trip and the "guide" had lots of interesting facts as you rode along. I would definitely return to the RIU.

Overall, we were very happy with the friendly hotel staff. The only negative was the room housekeeping of our room. We were happy with the response of the management when we had an issue with an unruly guest.

After reviewing some of the comments on this resort we were very surprised at how nice the resort is. The beach is beautiful with great service for chairs, but could use bar service on beach. They set up a bar in the lobby so why not set one on the beach. The only other complaint is how you can't sign up to reserve a spot in the specialty restaurants, they need to do like other Riu and sign up a few days ahead or in the morning. We attempted to get into the Steak house 2 times and could not get in. The resort was spotless, the rooms remodeled and very nice. We had a housekeeper named Tamara and she was amazing! So nice and friendly and helping me with anything I wanted. This is a very contained resort, meaning it is not like a Secrets or Breathless that is a sprawling resort, it is one building and everything is close, but that makes It nice. I would recommend this resort and was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the beach and water was in the Bahamas. It was as nice as most of the other places we have been.

This was our second time at this resort. They do a wonderful job with food!!!! I am excited to see the remodel. We booked a trip to exuma from the rep at the hotel. We had a wonderful day. However when we booked the trip we told the sales girl that my daughter had pain issues and she never said a thing about the speed boat slapping the water for 1 hour on the way out to exzuma. If she was good at her job she would have incouraged us to fly instead!!!! That was a little disappointing that she did not care about her clients!!! My daughter and myself were in pain the next few days after that trip!!!! And that could have been avoided!!! The trip it self was great after we got past the open water and the gentelman were wonderful. But she should know what she is selling!!! Also there is no ladders to get into the boat!!! Also something the sales person should know when she is putting a older person on a boat with no ladder. And a woman with pain issues. The actual hotel stay was fantastic!!!!!!!

Awful vacation

This was our worst vacation we've had. Started out with a room right in front of elevators. Had to wait one night before we could switch rooms. The following day had to put our stuff in storage until room was ready at 3:00. Day 2 water was not on which happened sporadically for a couple days. Day 3 my husbands wallet was lost (stolen) on the property. Day 4 safe in the room was broken and had to get repaired. Overall no service on the beach, pool or lobby. We invited a family to go on this trip with us and I am thoroughly embarrassed that they had to put up with all this too.

Non-Smoking Rule

When I go on vacation I am getting away from home rules. NOT being able to smoke was a slap in the face to me. This was my 3rd trip to the RIU and I was made to feel like a 3rd class guest, being made to go outside to smoke. Being able to smoke in the RIU was what I really liked about the hotel. I can assure you that I was not the only guest to feel this way. I am forced to smoke outside at home and I do not feel I should have to do it on vacation. The 24hr sports bar was empty as was the bar in the lobby. It was really sad because all of us smokers were forced outside with our drinks and to socialize. Very bad decision on RIU 's part.

The hotel itself is outdated and smells. There was something eating the wood in the dresser in our room (bugs). The balcony I'd classify as unsafe and the service was hit or miss. Food was decent and drinks were good. Beach was ok, but crowded with pushy vendors at times. Out of the 7 or 8 all-inclusive's we've stayed at, this was by far the worst.

Fun times!

We came for a party and that's what we got! The swim up bar closes at 5 and the pool bar closes at 6 - which is probably a good thing after all day drinking in the sun! People line up for dinner early for the specialty places, no reservations. Rooms were small, not fancy but they have room service. Beautiful beach, infinity pool in the swim up bar, 2nd pool for low key loungers, cabanas and some REALLY fun bar tenders. Entertainment at night was lacking but it's very close to Atlantis. The service in the Bahamas is much more laid back pace than in Wisconsin so don't be in a hurry. We went to a fish fry at Frankies and it took about 2 hours. Beware of cab drivers over charging and people making false promises. Queens staircase was cool to see but only takes 10 minutes. The straw market was not our thing. Weather beautiful, no bugs! Overall, we'd go back for another adult trip.

Great Hotel

Great Vacation, Not great time for weather. I say this because the waves were bad, and it was chilly (March 29 - April 5) I call this a hotel, because there's not much to explore, normally when you go to places in the Caribbean, there is always something to explore, more than one building on the property, etc. If you're an early riser, make sure you locate the Calypso bar (only bar open 24-hrs) for your morning coffee. Breakfast doesn't open till 7:30am. This Hotel has only 2 bars, one located at the pool (with a swim up option as well) and one in the lobby near the gym. Besides the main buffet here are 4 restaurants, Indian, Japanese, steakhouse, and Krystal Fusion. There is also a patisserie located in the lobby. For dinner reservations, it's first come first serve, you can not call ahead, and if you aren't there to line up at 6:30pm when the restaurants open, you're going to be eating late, or at the buffet. If you feel like staying in for the night, there is also room service (not an additional charge). The menu is limited and some of the rooms don't have menus as they are short, but if you call the main desk they can tell you what they can serve you. The Hotel, is very clean. It's been recently renovated so everything looks great and updated. Our room was your average room, not purple like all the google pictures, but maroon. It comes with a mini bar, fridge, closet, safe, flat screen tv, etc. The bath room shower was renovated, great shower head. Toilet needed some new plumbing (the water ran all night) but we made it work. Double his and her's sinks to make you feel like a queen and king. The beach is just beautiful, and there is not a shortage on chairs, we've been to the beach early and in the afternoon. There was always something available. There are no little shade huts or palm trees, but there are umbrellas. As other places there are tons of people who try and sell you their services or souvenirs, or jet skis... tons or jet skis... I think that's the only noisy factor. Unfortunately for us we traveled when there were a few bachelor/ bachelor parties, and our room level hosted everyone, and it was pretty noisy at night. But for the most part the hotel is quiet. The Atlantis is a hop away, literally! we walked over 4 times and we saw the main aquarium, as it is open to the public. You can gamble, shop, or even go for fancy dinner. Overall our trip was amazing and would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling without children!

Disappointed

When you enter the lobby you are greeted by an odor that I can only describe as sewer-like. Can not understand how this is tolerated. The area itself is very attractive. Felicity at check in was wonderful and efficient. Our ocean front room on the 14th floor was beautiful. The view from the large balcony was gorgeous. Monique from housekeeping kept the room in very excellent cleanliness. The major problem was the lack of air conditioning!!! Minimal to none for the first 3 days of a 4 day trip. There were no fans available for use to help. No ceiling fans in the entire building. As the locals said the weather was unusually hot so sleep was difficult. I actually tried to sleep in the lounge chair on the balcony. Then miraculously the air was fixed on the 4th day. This coincided with the influx of people for the weekend. I have my own thoughts about that. As others have said the line deal for the restaurants was ridiculous so we opted for the buffet. Very fresh fruit and salad selections. Beef was tough but pork was delicious. The spa needs a renovation. It is on the small side in that the massage therapists were sitting on a bench in the restroom waiting for us. The restroom was not as clean as it should have been.We were not offered lockers but there was a good price with the discount on the Renova special. The treatment room was pleasant and the therapists were good. Plenty of chairs and umbrellas on the beach which the young men will bring to your spot. The beach is public and the resort is right next to the public access. Crying babies, constant yelling back and forth by the men trying to sell jet ski rides, police action while confiscating one of the jet skis and last but not least one man doing drugs and other men trying to buy from him. Non-guests were allowed to come use the only outdoor shower to get the sand off which caused a backup of paying guests at times. All this did not make for a relaxing time at the beach. Although I loved the hotel staff and the room I will not be returning.

After reading a lot of the reviews, I was skeptical. Check in was smooth and front desk staff were helpful and friendly. Hotel has been renovated and is lovely. The rooms were typical Riu - our room overlooked the pool area and we had a view of the ocean. We only ate at the buffet which had lots of options and was great. Did not eat at any a la carte restaurants because we did not want to line up at 6pm and wait. Some people were complaining about the wait for the elevators - we did not encounter this at all. We hung out at the pool and the beach during our stay. No issues getting loungers. Bar staff work hard and always served us with a smile. Honestly had no complaints the entire 5 days we were there. Don't hesitate to book at this resort. It is a small quaint all inclusive resort and the price was right!
