Not what I expected...

As other reviews have said, the lobby does smell, like the harbor and surrounding bay area. Not much you can do about that I guess. Too many restaurants with limited seating times (I was there on weekdays so it was open if need be for me) with the exception of the Atlantic (service is more open time wise). I will say this in a very positive tone, the front desk staff addressed my reservation in a very positive and proactive way. I had called and told the reservation agent that I was traveling alone, he put two occupants for the room and the front desk staff adjusted my bill accordingly without me asking/saying anything. The room was nice, but again, reviews were correct, it seemed damp all the time. The air conditioning fan was noisy and the hot water in the shower didn't seem to work. Both reported when I left. It is all adult and mostly a quiet place to stay. Decent food, sort of cafeteria style in the Atlantic. Restaurant staff is not overly personable so don't expect much. Beach and pool areas are kept clean as is the hotel overall. Walking to area shopping (connected with Atlantis was a bit of a challenge since Google maps is not current (the hotel next door is built across Casino drive) but is a short walk. Overall I rated this "average" because I rate this more as a hotel than a "resort" they do have activities all extra of course but they are external to the hotel. Taxis are always available but, like most vehicles you see around, beat up and barely kept clean. They constantly honk if you are walking as well to try to earn a fare. Downtown Nassau is very run down and Bay street is the main place to walk and shop. You can walk across from/to Paradise island on the Sidney Poitier bridge, it's a good hike, and a bit steep but a nice view at the top.

To start, I didn't really want to go to the Bahamas, seemed cliche to me. But the boyfriend wanted to so we went. May of 2016. Can I say how goofy I am for not wanting to go??? 1. Resort is awesome, situated right next to Atlantis Resort, so most of our night into mornings were spent in the casino. 2. Food is excellent. I had to strategically eat so that I could taste all of the different things available at the buffet. (Tuesday night we arrived and I was treated to the absolute best beef wellington ever. Unfortunately it was my last trip to the buffet because I got filled up and couldn't get more.) 3. Beach is on point. Staff was helpful with umbrellas and chairs. However, I was a little annoyed by the vendors running around making smart mouth comments about lazy americans not wanting to rent their jet skis. We work 65-75 hours a week at home so when we vacation, we sloth it up to the max.) It was a haul to get drinks from the beach though. Trying to get thru the sand and climb the stairs was difficult. (When we left the property we were told that they would be remodeling the property so I hope they added a more accessible bar from the beach) 4. Our driver from the airport (Im sorry brother I forgot your name AGAIN) gave us a heads up on the downtown area close to where the cruise ships dock. so we took a cab and went to the local hang out spot and had the best fried seafood EVER. Then we walked around the downtown area, which was very touristy. But we enjoy experiencing the culture of the places we visit. I would definitely return to this resort. Being so close to Atlantis and being able to enjoy all that Atlantis has to offer was a highlight, the food at the RIU was a major highlight. Ive read that they have made it adults only now, so would like to stay here when I return to the bahamas.

Great vacation

Beautiful hotel. Staff was always very friendly and helpful. Front desk person, Kisha Charles, gives a wonderful first impression of the Riu. She checked us in, helped us with the internet connection, and always had a big smile for us and made us feel welcome. Jr suite was ok with nice view of pool and ocean. Champagne and fruits for my birthday was a very pleasant surprise. Buffet was always good; fresh fruit and great desserts. We ate at the steak restaurant twice; lobster was very good, but the steak was overcooked both times. No choice of appetizers or desserts, neither very good. Drinks by the pool were very good and the pool activities were fun. Overall a great vacation!

This is going to be somewhat of a lengthy review. First of all, I want to say this was our first time out of the country and we had no idea what to expect or what to look for when booking an all inclusive resort. We were highly disappointed with our trip and regretted booking this resort. This was our honeymoon, and we like to be on the go and not just sit on the beach with a cocktail or at the pool with a cocktail. With this resort, that's all there is to do. I will say, partly this is our fault because like I said before, we did not know what to look for. The customer service when you first arrive, but throughout our trip we were not treated the best. We did the breakfast buffet every day and the first couple days we were greeted, sat, and given drinks immediately. Throughout the trip though, we would have to sit ourselves and ask someone for a drink and they would either never bring us one or bring it right as we were finishing eating. We ordered room service one time(which is included) and the lady brought the food, pushed the door open all the way so it wouldn't close, and stuck her hand out waiting for a tip without ever saying a word. It was the rudest thing I have ever seen. We have no problem tipping, but you don't just treat someone like that and expect one. We had read it was ALL INCLUSIVE including tips. The wifi had gone out and I needed to check us into our flights, so I called the front desk to ask them about it and they cut me off mid sentence and would barely let me ask my next question before hanging up. Because it was our honeymoon, we had put that in when booking to receive the honeymoon package. We were upgraded like it stated we would be, we were given the "resort credits" which is really just a bunch of junk you can't use. It also states you will receive a small bottle of rum or tequila and a surprise welcome gift. We arrived on Monday, so on Wednesday when we still hadn't received our bottle or gift I called the front desk and they said it was able to show up any day we were there. We were leaving Friday, so Thursday night we still hadn't received anything. I called the front desk again and they said they would try to get it sent. They did show up with a bottle of champagne and fruit which I'm guessing is the "surprise welcome gift". The thing is, we wouldn't have cared about it at all, but it was in the writing when we booked so we expected it and was looking forward to it. It also states we would be given late checkout if available, which apparently it wasn't. No big deal but just letting y'all know. Excursions- we booked an excursion to Rose Island through Majestic Tours in their lobby and it was great! However, we wanted to do more excursions, but it was like if you did one you had done them all. They rarely differed from the next. They have a flag by the beach and pool and if it is red then you aren't allowed in the water and no vendors are set up out there. Every day we were there it was red. Except on Friday, when we were leaving, it was red but they were allowing all the vendors to be out there and people rent jet skis. Why couldn't they have been out there every other day if the flag was red then too? We did wait in the line for the steakhouse one night, and it was definitely not worth it. I got salmon which was okay, and my husband got the steak which was so tough you could hardly eat it. Don't waste your time. We did a private dinner on the terrace which we booked through the resort, and it was amazing! The food was phenomenal, the service was extraordinary, and the service was wonderful! This was by far our favorite thing of the whole trip. The pool does have lots of activities during the day, so if you are on that likes to just hangout in the pool, you'd probably love this! All in all, we wouldn't go back. For someone who has traveled often and knows what to expect this place could be great for you! For anyone who hasn't really traveled and likes to be on the go, this place is NOT for you. We wouldn't go back not only because of the lack of activity, but also because of how we were treated multiple times.

Enjoyable, but not without faults

This was a great getaway for the price, but not without faults. The beaches are beautiful, but because of high winds, swimming was forbidden for most of our stay. That said, the view was still spectacular, and we enjoyed our time by the pool. The bed was quite uncomfortable, but otherwise the room was good. The food is so-so. An abundant selection, but nothing is spectacular. Many guests take issue with their seating system for the restaurants. We found it a tad inconvenient, but not terrible. The drinks on the other hand are terrific. They will make you anything! The frozen drinks were great! All in all, this was a nice getaway, for a reasonable price.
