Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

The vacation from hell

Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

We booked this as our alter plans had not worked out. We knew it was a safe bet excellent from start to finish .Every meal was delicious and when our favourite staff were involved it was more special. We had flours and sprinkles on our table so many times. Once they had Fiesta 30 celebrating with us our 30 years of marriage. Excellent food.Would stay here again. The hotel is right on the beach and is also a beautiful location for weddings. The special beach party wedding including illuminated dancefloor looked amazing. The staff were pretty special too from the concierge through cleaning staff right through to wait staff Santiago,Arturo,Cecily Mendez and not to forget Raul- they made this such a magical celebration for a holiday- What a very special group of people the staff are .They made the holiday magical

This review goes way back when I was introduced to Riu properties. Spent Christmas and New Years...3 years in a row. 2007, 2008, 2009. This is where I learned what to expect from excellent hotels. The last year was not as outstanding, as room requests were starting to be a problem. Lots of humidity and mould. Repeat guests were not valued, so we changed our travel options. I consider we were lucky to have experienced the best they had to offer. Then you.

Fantastic holiday here

Second Time to Rui Palace Mexico

We have visited the Riu Place Riveria Maya three times. This is our second visit to the Rui Place Mexico. Both resorts are very nice. If you could combine the best of each resort you would have the perfect destination. People first. The resort staff is amazing. Breakfast and lunch with Abraham. Abraham is by far one of the best waiters we have had the pleasure to meet. Very friend and very professional. Cappuccino bar with Maria and Zuleima. Again very friendly and very professional. The outdoor guest services team member- Nichole is very friendly and quite a talented dancer. Estaphan at the front desk was very helpful and very professional. The food at the resort is better than anything we have found in Cuba, the Dominican and Jamaica. Good selection, good quality. The resort has several al la cart restaurants which are all very nice (no reservations required). If you prefer the buffet, it is one of the best. The resort is well laid out and easy to walk. The main lobby has an elevator. Several years ago, the resort was renovated (very contemporary). The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are spacious. Our air conditioner worked well; however, it was a bit loud. The water pressure in the shower was excellent. The pool area is somewhat unique. There are several separate pools, ie., swim up pool bar, quit pool, activity pool, family pool. The beach is amazing. Lots of shade trees and lots of beach chairs. They were having an issue with excess seaweed washing ashore; however, it was only an issue a few days and they are actively removing the seaweed. The seaweed did not stop us from swimming in the ocean. We will return. See You Tube Video Channel: nwaynesworld

Not So Good

Not So Good We stayed at the Riu Palace from 05th – 19th May 2018. We have previously stayed at the Tequila which is just across the road and returned to Playacar mainly because of the superb beach. The beach is superb, my only gripe was that around the sun loungers there are cigarette butts everywhere as ashtrays aren’t provided. A huge amount of seaweed was washed up on a daily basis which became a mammoth task for the staff that dug holes and buried it. We were able to use the facilities of other Riu hotels including those in Cancun but the Tequila was undergoing total refurbishment and closed during the time of our visit. Without doubt the hotels best asset are the staff. We are well travelled and have been to Mexico many times but never have we experienced such a high level of service and friendliness, the staff are simply amazing and we thank them for their hospitality and service. The restaurants aren’t well attended and we soon realised why. The menus aren’t good and in general the experience was very poor, in my opinion the restaurants really do need to get their act together as it does spoil an excellent hotel. Most people clearly opted for the buffet restaurant but we enjoy the A la carte dinning experience and would usually avoid buffet restaurants but I’m afraid we were extremely disappointed with the A la carte restaurants. We were accompanied by friends, one if which is vegetarian which isn’t catered for in the restaurants, therefore, she had to eat in the buffet every night. We had the fillet steak in the Gourmet Restaurant which was served with cous cous which I found to be a rather strange combination. Guests that had used the restaurants often ended up going to the buffet restaurant afterwards, we certainly did. The food in the buffet restaurant is of a high standard. In my opinion, most of the red wine is undrinkable, some is absolutely disgusting, the Virtuoso brand is possibly the best but even that isn’t great. There is only one restaurant available for breakfast (the buffet restaurant) and lunch (The pool restaurant). Two weeks eating in the same places became rather tedious. During our stay, the sun loungers around the pool were removed and replaced with new but inferior beds that were not only uncomfortable but became very annoying to many guests as toes were stubbed on the protruding legs and the metal frames get extremely hot in the sun. We preferred the original loungers that were moved to the beach so we opted to use the beach going forward. The pool area can get quite rowdy and guests with mini speakers booming out were extremely annoying. These things should be banned in public areas! I actually asked one group to turn theirs off which they refused to do but they did turn the volume down. If you are looking for a quite peaceful holiday I would suggest this isn’t the place for you.
