Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

The vacation from hell
WILLIAM M.
Oct 26 2017
Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

So far this has been the best hotel I've stayed at since coming to Mexico. The staff went above and beyond to make sure you were happy. The pool was clean. The beach was beautiful! It was a great place to come to relax and forget about your stress for a week.

The Riu Palace, Tiviera Maya - Mexico were efficient, courteous and pleasant from the time we checked our part of 9 into the hotel until we checked out 7-days later. The catered to every need and request. The staff was proactive in providing the type of service that you dream about 51 weeks a year.

I thought the Riu Palace Mexico was fantastic! The lobby, pools, bars, and beach were outstanding! My only negative critique is that my husband and I were not aware that men must wear pants to the restaurants on site. He did not bring any pants at all therefore we would not enjoy dining at any of the restaurants. How sad!

I thought the décor at this hotel was very gawdy. Although I understand why the hotel room was set up as it was, I did not like having an open bathtub in the middle of the room. Although the toilet area was very small. The cleaning products used had a very unpleasant order and the smell permeated through the room consistently.

This is going to be a lengthy review as I would like to answer many questions. I rely on reviews to choose our destination. We have been visiting Riu Palaces since 2006 and have found the Riu Palace Mexico to be our favorite. This was our fourth visit here and we were not disappointed. We usually celebrate my birthday but we were here for my husband's 70th and my son's 13th and we were very happy. We arrived earlier than normal on Saturday and we were greeted my Manuel's smiling face and high fives, and champagne! The staff at the reception desk was very helpful and let us know that they would notify us as soon as our room was ready. I corresponded with the reception desk by email before arriving. We love the room that we had last year and wanted the same one however we had some problems with the room so I sent the pictures in my correspondence and was assured that they would be taken care of. I believe in giving the management a chance to correct them before posting a negative review with pictures attached. It took two days for the problem to be resolved but the hotel was filled to capacity and the staff was very busy but it was all done and we were very happy. We thought that we would try Krystal for dinner as it was very good in the past. My husband and son were in nice shorts and button up shirts and I was wearing a dress when we tried to enter Krystal. There were only three tables with guests and we we were told very rudely that the restaurant required men to wear slacks. That is fine we thought that we would try even though we know pants are required. It was the way that the host put his hand up in our face and shut the door as fast as he could. We went to the buffet and the meal was just so so. We have always enjoyed the buffet and figured that maybe it was a transitional evening. We spoke to the management and they weren't very concerned about the actions of the host at Krystal. There is something good to know and that is if you should forget trousers they have some with a tie at the waist! This really could come in handy if you forget them. Fortunately my husband and son did have them for our visit to the Italian restaurant which we ate with our friends onTuesday night. The fettuccine Carbonara was very good, but the Osso Bucco and lamb chops were not up to par. The Don Julian buffet has a wonderful breakfast and on most nights the buffet had many good choices. The staff at the Don Julian are amazing and will take wonderful care of you. The same goes for the Guacamole restaurant at lunch. I really enjoy the Mexican restaurant for lunch and I don't think that a lot of people realize that it is open during the day. On to the Birthday celebrations. I spoke with Paco on Saturday and told him that we would be dining at the steak restaurant on Sunday for my husbands 70th and he arranged for a birthday cake complete with a celebration with the servers. The steakhouse really is wonderful and the view is beautiful! Santoyo arranged for my son's birthday festivities at the buffet on Thursday and it was Gala night, the food was fantastic. He had a Happy Birthday sign at our table as well as a delicious birthday cake. The entire buffet staff surrounded our table to sing! The front desk staff arranged for our room to be decorated for my son's birthday and wow was he surprised! I hope that you are able to view the photos because it was spectacular! The pools and beach are wonderful. The sun beds were hard to come by if you arrived at the beach later in the morning but the staff was working hard to accommodate everyone. Lazaro was at the pool everyday with a huge smile on his face and happy to bring whatever we needed. The entertainment staff was amazing and really got everyone engaged in activities from darts to dancing at night before the actual show started. A huge shoutout to Ana who never walked by without some kind words. I remember when she was new in April and now she really knows how to engage with all of the guests. I am so sad when I read the negative reviews about the small things such as the bathroom is too small, the beds were pushed together, seaweed etc. You are are here to have fun and enjoy the overall experience so ENJOY! Thank you to all of the staff that is too large for me to name individually as my review is quite lengthy. We will be back in April and I can't give you the number to the great room as I want to request it again!! Don't hesitate booking your trip to RPM! Please don't forget to be generous when tipping everyone the servers, housekeeping, and even the person passing out towels. Everyone works very hard to make your stay a pleasurable one. I would like to add that this is the first time that I have seen the management staff interacting with the guests and this leads to the hotel being even more fabulous! Thank you!

Visiting this lovely hotel for the second time in 3 years, been to this part of the region (playa del carmen) about 7 times now and love the place. Nice walk either way on the beach and a 20-25 min walk to fifth avenue for shopping. Rui palace is the best in this region service is excellent never sit with an empty glass and the food is just delicious. The staff are amazing nothing too much trouble. Entertainment staff are the most energetic and friendliest people around. Facilities are very good here 24 hr room service which you really don't need, there is a snack bar open 24 hrs a day for drinks and food. The beach is lovely and you get served drinks while you lie on the beach another bonus. I'm writing this review as I prepare to leave this lovely hotel today after a fantastic 2 week holiday. If I had any complaint it would be they make me eat too much food as it is so good.

Premium Riu Palace All-Inclusive Resort
wcs222, Toronto, Canada
Fri Nov 10 12:29:32 EST 2017
Riu Palace Mexico is one of the resorts under the premium Riu Palace brand. The quality difference in all aspects is obvious, compared to the nearby Riu hotels in Playacar: Riu Tequila (stayed there last year), Riu Yucatan (visited during the day), Riu Playacar (visited during the day). The Riu Palace Riviera Maya and Riu Lupita are further away, so we did not get around to visiting them. Both interior buildings and exterior grounds are meticulously maintained. The decor everywhere, from lobby to restaurants to pools, exude elegance with huge chandeliers in the lobby. This resort caters to older couples (my wife and I are retired), although there were some, but not too many families with children and a group of 20-something singles arrived towards the end of our stay. The free, fast WiFi is everywhere through the resort all the way to the beach chairs. Overall, the atmosphere is sedate, not much activities or pool events, compared to the other Riu hotels. The food is excellent, both in the main "Don Julian" buffet (breakfast/dinner) restaurant and in the a la carte restaurants. We enjoyed the "La Dolce Vita" Italian restaurant and "Krystal" Fusion restaurant the most. The "Miyagi" Japanese restaurant was on the bottom of our list because it was actually a mix of Asian food and none of it was authentic. The "Guacamole" poolside restaurant serves buffet lunch and doubles as a Steakhouse for dinner with nice steaks and lobster. The "La Bodega" serves Mexican buffet. A BBQ grill is set up daily for lunch, which is convenient if you are on the beach and don't have to go too far. In the main lobby area, "Lounge 24" has food, alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, TVs and computers at all times. The "Capuchino" coffee bar is also near the lobby with fresh-brewed expresso/cappuccino, cakes and ice cream. Alcoholic drinks, soft drinks and coffee are widely-available everywhere in the bars and restaurants. If you do not want to get your own drinks, courteous servers will regularly come you around the lobby, restaurants, pools and beach. They have a drink menu of shots, liqueurs, tallboys, frozen drinks and champagne (Mexican). Brands include Smirnoff Beefeater, Gordons, Bacardi, Jose Cuervo, Presidente, Kahlua. We were in the standard, base Jr. Suite, which was of comfortable size with a King bed (2 singles put together), a sunken sitting area, a smallish (~30") wall-mounted TV, mini-fridge (beer, soft drink, water), drip coffee maker, alcohol bottle dispenser (Smirnoff vodka, Bacardi rum, Jose Cuervo tequila, Presidente brandy). On the downside, the room furniture were not of of high quality. Also, the bathroom was completely open with no privacy and the layout is awkward (shower only, small room for toilet, jetted tub). The pool area has the Renova spa ($$$), which also houses a basic, decent gym/fitness center. The Animation entertainers around the pool are subdued. They have a Kids Club, even with very few small children. The resort was not very busy during 1st week of November, which was nice and there were always lots of lounge chairs around the pool and no lineups at restaurants. We enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return. Some minor annoyances: The smooth, hard tiles around the pools can become slippery when wet. The tiled shower floor in our room is also slippery when wet with soap. Sound tends to travel easily around the rooms, with doors slamming and furniture screeching when moved around the hard floors.

Outstanding for a Second Time!!

This resort is so special. We decided to return for a second time 3 years later and it didn't disappoint. The service & food were outstanding! We didn't even go to the different restaurants. The buffet was exceptional every day for our meals. The resort was clean, maintained perfect. A special shout out to the bartenders- Louis, Adan, Joel, Domingo, Oscar & Joaquin. They were fantastic. Our hands were never empty with a drink. They waited on us like we were the only patrons at the hotel. Miguel who was the Manager was so cordial and kind. The hospitality was like no other. We will definitely go back again to this gem.

This was our 4th visit to Mexico but our first stay in a Riu Palace hotel. The hotel’s grounds are well kept and the choice of food is good. The drinks on offer include international brands and there is a great choice of cocktails. When you stay in the Riu Palace you can visit the other 4 Rui hotels in Playa del Carmen but we didn’t stay in any of the other hotels for long. The hotel decorated our room really nicely for my 30th birthday celebrations and gave us a little gift which was a lovely touch. My only criticism is that this hotel is slightly quieter for entertainment than some of the other Riu hotels and the pool bar pool needs more regular cleaning as there is often a film of sun cream by the end of the day. Otherwise a fantastic hotel within 20-25 mins walking distance from Playa del Carmen. If I could I would give this hotel a 4.5 but not quite a 5 yet.
