Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

The vacation from hell
Oct 26 2017
Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

Have been here numerous times

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

So far this has been the best hotel I've stayed at since coming to Mexico. The staff went above and beyond to make sure you were happy. The pool was clean. The beach was beautiful! It was a great place to come to relax and forget about your stress for a week.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful - the food however needs some flavor. There was no flavor to the food at all.

The Riu Palace, Tiviera Maya - Mexico were efficient, courteous and pleasant from the time we checked our part of 9 into the hotel until we checked out 7-days later. The catered to every need and request. The staff was proactive in providing the type of service that you dream about 51 weeks a year.

Great resort, great staff and great beach. We will most likely be back for a third time. Really appreciate the fact you no longer need reservations for the specialty restaurants.

My biggest issue was with the spa. It was as if they had zero training or knowledge of massges.

I thought the Riu Palace Mexico was fantastic! The lobby, pools, bars, and beach were outstanding! My only negative critique is that my husband and I were not aware that men must wear pants to the restaurants on site. He did not bring any pants at all therefore we would not enjoy dining at any of the restaurants. How sad!

I thought the décor at this hotel was very gawdy. Although I understand why the hotel room was set up as it was, I did not like having an open bathtub in the middle of the room. Although the toilet area was very small. The cleaning products used had a very unpleasant order and the smell permeated through the room consistently.

Nice beach and resort, rooms and service ok
Tx412, Houston, Texas

I've been staying at resorts up and down this area for the past 10 years. In the last two years, we've had kids so no longer staying at the adults only resorts. For a place that allows kids, this resort is one of the nicer ones. The food was great with the buffet being our go-to place for dinners because it had the most option. We tried the other restaurants on site but it was slow and overcooked our food. Really, the buffet is the best here and thursday nights they have lobster and better cuts of beef. Rooms - If you have a stroller or need an elevator, you are going to want to stay on the first floor as they only have like 2 elevators (by the front lobby area only) and it's really inconvenient to get to unless your room is right next to it. The downside is, the first floor is loud and you can hear people walking by and moving furniture above you. The rooms aren't the nicest we've stayed in, but it's still roomy enough. They do a good job of cleaning the rooms. Restocking the fridge was hit or miss sometimes despite the fact that we tipped. Overall, rooms were decent and we had no issue with it. Beach - it's definitely one of the nicer stretches of beach in the area with a lot of palm trees for shade and plenty of chairs although they won't let you pull them closer to the water. No rocks to worry about either. Really nice beach. Service - Again, hit or miss. Overall not the best service. We asked for water bottles at the bar when our room was not restocked for a day or so and room service still kept forgetting and the bartender was acting like he was giving up gold and being very suspicious of us and our water needs? Very strange. We tipped everyone all the time, but honestly, I don't feel like it made a big difference in service or it depends on the person. They weren't the friendliest staff, but maybe we went right around the new year and they felt overworked?? I don't know, it wasn't a big issue for us, just noting that they weren't the friendliest or most accommodating staff. They have a 30 minute kid show every night that is great for kids to get up and dance. The place is fairly quiet at night in terms of entertainment. Overall we enjoyed our stay and it was nice that it's close to the shopping area and you can go out of the hotel to safely explore other riu hotels.

Would we go again NO

This was the third visit to this hotel, but the standard has gone down. To our regret we reccomended this to two couples of our family, who had similar experiences to us..Which made us feel bad.. Food was not very interesting (Not 5* standards) not very nice at all, difficult to find something to enjoy each day. We were both ill three times during our holiday... Watch the Ice in drinks and Glass water in the restaurants (stick to the bottles) Rooms are tired, we had the fridge changed twice due to breakdowns. Sink plugs didn't work, even after the maintenance man fixed them...The rooms smell of drains,(the plumbing needs looking at) It took 7 days to get a table for the balcony, it came after 3 times of asking.. The pillows are only any use in a babies cot.. The corridors are noisey at all hours, doors slamming, kids screaming etc. There are so many children there now you can't get any quiet time anywhere.. The sunbeds were all gone each day by 10am, with towels on them but no people in a lot of cases. the pool hut ran out of towels by early afternoon most days..(people were even asking us for our used towels) We could not fault the floor staff, if it was not for them the hotel would be in trouble. Waiting staff were very helpful and could not do enough to please us, But that does not excuse the other problems here, (we asked to see the manager one evening), I was told he would be along soon (but no show) he was conspicuous by his absence... For the money we paid for this holiday, we did not have our monies worth from the hotel.. The evenings entertainment was very good Would we return to this hotel DEFINITELY NOT...Not while it's for families, and then it needs a plumbing refurbishment... And what about that goverment exit tax, to be able to leave their country as well as the environment tax we paid at the desk when booking in at the hotel. What next a sunshine tax?...

Excellent hotel with gorgeous beach and pool area, the music was pretty quiet and very few activities going on around the pool or beach. Staff are brilliant so friendly always smiling and happy. The rooms are spacious and have all the amenities mini bar fully stocked daily. Excellent maid service daily. Food was amazing for an all inclusive, we have been to many Riu hotels this was the best food ever. The hotel grounds are beautiful always being attended to by ground staff. Nice to use the swim-up bar in the afternoon no idiots just people enjoying a drink in clean water. It was not a party atmosphere more for families and older couples. The nightly entertainment was average but you could use the other five Riu hotels. The staff in the lobby/piano bar were great you never had an empty glass, the piano player played very load music for about one hour from7.30pm. Lifts are a problem one each side at the entrance in reception on the first floor of the hotel, go down one floor and it only went to the rooms, you had to walk to the entrance from the beach or pool to get to the restaurant and entertainment area. Couples carrying children and buggy's up the stairs to get to the lobby bar, coffee bar, and reception is not very good. Recycle box in reception for unwanted adult and children's clothes shoes and toys to help unprivileged families a great idea. Just a two mile walk along the beach to Playa Del Carmen and 5th Avenue highly recommended. This is a immaculate hotel and we will be back next Christmas and New Year. Warning The Environmental Tax went up on January 1st, Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check in ( 2 weeks 280 Pesos ) you can pay by Pesos or card, Hotels will not take cash payments in US Dollars and cannot exchange US Dollars to Pesos. Hotel do change pounds to pesos. If your traveling from the UK please take Pesos with you. Tipping and shops will still take American Dollars.

Riu Palace Mexico - Fantastic Xmas / New Year Holiday
Dean B, Manchester

This was our first holiday we've ever had in the festive season and so we were a bit apprehensive. We needn't have been - we had an absolute fantastic time. ROOM - Lovely room and very clean indeed, cleaned at least once a day, sometimes twice. Fridge was also stocked up every day with soft drinks / lager / water. Optics on the wall with various spirits. Ice machine on the corridor. FOOD - 4 restaurants (Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Steakhouse) and 2 buffet areas (one was down by the beach) . The restaurants had set menus (and you had to wear long pants) so we never bothered with them. To be fair most of the food in the restaurants you could get from the buffet. I've read some reviews on here and I'm baffled by the reviewers who have a bad word to say about the food?? It was really good and there was PLENTY to choose from, you name it and they probably served it. There was even a barbecued food area down on the beach. SERVICE/STAFF - Second to none. The staff were fantastic - we commented on how hard they worked all day long. Very friendly, courteous and would go out of their way to help you. Room service very efficient too. They waiters on the beach bringing you drinks all day and the same at night. Big shout out to Raul in the breakfast/buffet - lovely man! ENTERTAINMENT - The complex had a Xmas Eve and New Years Eve Gala which were OK, however I did feel that the bands etc were a bit 'samey'. I'm all for listening to Latin music, but apart from one cover band it was literally every night. You are free to visit the other Riu hotels on the complex to mix it up a bit and one had a nightclub in it if you want to party until the early hours. Once you've done that then go down to 5th Avenue, there so much to do and see down there. We recommend going to Coco Bongo - absolutely fantastic nightclub/show. It's not cheap (about 75 USD each) but we had our best night out down there. BEACH - Free use of sunbeds/hammocks and free towels. Sunbeds always available on the beach and by the numerous pools. There were beach traders, but they were friendly enough and didn't harass you once you told them you want interested. KIDS - Although we didn't take any children, we could see that there was plenty for them to do. The animation team kept them occupied all day and night. In summary: Apart from the hotels entertainment which lacked a little variety for me, this hotel was absolutely brilliant and their staff were outstanding. We wouldn't think twice in booking and going back.

Gorgeous beach, great staff, quiet rooms

Rui Palace Mexico is located nearby a string of all-inclusive resorts south of Cancun, across from Cozumel. Other Riu properties are walking distance, so you can eat/drink or watch sports at other properties with no charge. This resort is newer - though the "modern" design is a bit garish. Locals call it the "Liberace" Riu. . . but that's just b/c of the color schemes (pinks/purples/sparkly/glitter). We've stayed at other Riu Palaces, and this resort was just as lovely, but VERY GLAD to say, significantly quieter at night, not a party hotel, and the rooms were clean/new/updated. The beds were more comfortable than other Riu Palaces, though we had to ask for blankets as the nights were quite cool. The weather was fickle, sunny one day, rainy the next, but par for January. As with other all-inclusive resorts, the food tends to be "just OK" (though the NY Strip steak at the steak house was 100% fabulous), and the alcohol tends to be mediocre quality even if you ask for top shelf & pay better tips. We bought our own Absolute and good wines at a liquor store in Playa del Carmen and kept them in our room fridge. The wines served in the restaurants taste like vinegar to a wine person. Why can't they import some decent California wines? Or from Chile or Argentina? The beer is good! The pina coladas & other frozen drinks are refreshing when you're out at the pool or beach but pretty low alcohol content. Breakfast buffet has the best food selection of the day, but service ends at 11 am. The lattes, espresso, even the regular coffee is also very good. All in all, we had a great stay and the price is reasonable. We probably will go again next year!
