Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

The vacation from hell

Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

Overall good resort
Smarcone, Boston, Massachusetts

Overall a good resort. Wouldn’t say it was 5 stars by any means. Location was good - gated community of Playacar. A little too far from 5th Avenue for my liking. Would rather be in a resort much closer to Town. Beach is stunning. The hotel’s beachfront is really the best of all Playacar. The pools are great - 4 square pools in total with an additional 2 small infinity wading pools with gorgeous views of the beach. Pool entertainment is good. I would suggest better music at the pool when the entertainment isn’t active. Pool bars are great. Service is excellent. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Food is good. I thought the buffets were good for an all-inclusive - we went for breakfast and lunches at the buffets. The Steakhouse is the best - great filets and lobster tails. We went 3 nights! Very good service there. Krystal was ok. Duck and beef tenderloin was good. Didn’t try the Italian or Mexican. Be sure to check with the front desk because at least one of the specialty restaurants is closed on each night. The gala night on Thursday night at the buffet is really good - unlimited lobster tails, shrimp, mussels, clams, crab, beef Wellington, salmon, etc...Rooms are just ok. Absolutely no privacy. Toilet is in small closet type room with a large vent, which is not private at all. Awkward tub in middle of the room. If you and your partner have different morning routines, than the rooms could be problematic. AC didn’t work great. Beds were large, but two doubles pushed together. Not the most comfortable. Shower is the best part of the room - clean, totally tiled with rainfall shower head. We had one of the larger balconies without a glass front, which offered more privacy. We had a 2nd floor fountain view room, and I’d really pay the extra money for that, as the other rooms face the hotel next door with no views at all. We had a major issue with the keycards, which really turned me off. Didn’t work one night and when we went to have them reset the front desk informed us they had to change the batteries, which they did. The next day, keys didn’t work AGAIN. Went to front desk and they had maintenance in our room “fixing” the lock again when all I wanted was to shower and relax after a long day in the sun. After dinner keys didn’t work AGAIN, so we had to wait in our room while maintenance installed a whole new lock and door knob all whilst my husband and I were trying to relax. This took a half hour. This whole lock / key situation was a real aggravation. The nightlife isn’t great at this hotel. The lobby bar is pretty lame compared to the Riu Yucatán’s lobby bar scene next door. They want you to hang outside at the outdoor stage, but on hot nights, it’s not very comfortable. Gym was ok. Small without much equipment. I most likely wouldn’t stay here again. I’d rather stay at the Riu Palace Mayan Riviera, especially after their upcoming renovation. We visited that resort while we were here and it’s much more grand and closer to Downtown. Pool area is nice and much closer to the beach than RPM. Only reason we didn’t stay at RPMR is because it’s due for a renovation in a couple months. Hopefully they keep the style the same and do not turn it into the European modern style like they did to the RPM. It really loses the charm that I’ve become accustomed to when staying at Riu Palaces.

Returned from this fabulous hotel on the 25, October after two great weeks . Feeling very chilled & relaxed. We are used to going on holiday & running around everywhere this was so different. We didn't go on any trips , over the two weeks we twice jumped into a taxi to Playa del Carmen only 90 Mexican pasos about £4 each way for a couple of hours but the hotel had everything you needed .. Could not fault the food the main restaurant help yourself for breakfast had so many things I don't think anyone would leave hungry. You can use this restaurant in the evening and we did a few time fabulous choice of food but help yourself. There was a further five Smaller restaurants and we never had a bad meal . The drinks were top quality all top name brands . Our day consisted breakfast, beach all day lunch at the Stake restaurant next to the pool then back to the beach. A waiter served cocktails on the beach .. Loads of beach pool beds .. But it was October so that may be the reason.. Housekeeping was first class rooms kept immaculate cleane crisp bedding every day new towels every day.. We had been upgraded to a room overlooking the ornament pools that ran down the middle of the hotel I would not have liked to have been on the other side of the corridor as you would have no view. The only reason I'm giving it 4 is although all the public areas are palatial the bed rooms are very basic. But who spends there holiday in the bed room. I would definitely return to this hotel...

What an AI should be.

Having only experienced 2 all inclusives before, both quite tolerable, I expected the same. I was pleasantly surprised. Check-in was quick, the basic junior suite was large and comfortable, and the service attentive at all times. The fridge was noisy the first night, and problem resolved in minutes after making report. We surveyed the other RUI close by, and we were happy with our choice.

We had a sneek visit here whilst staying in the sister hotel (dont know if this was allowed), this is Riu at its best ! Just everything is top quality from the decor to the stunning chandeliers in reception... the pool area and stunning grounds constantly kept clean by an "army" of workers whos happiness is shown by the quality of the work... food was pretty much the same as our sister hotel as are most riu 5star, excellent ....second time in Mexico ...second time to be stunned by its amazing beauty and the happiness of all the local workers ...makes this place 1st choice for next year again....

12 of us came to Riu for our friend's birthday and we had an amazing. This is my 2 second time here so I recommended it to the group. Fantastic weather, beautiful clean white sand beach. We had an amazing time the whole week. Omar and the team Karla, Jesus Carlos at the reception ensured we got the rooms we requested. Omar at the swim up bar was wonderful .The buffet staff Hermino, Rahul, Carlos and many others made sure our glasses are always filled and have plenty to eat. The chamber maids made different towel animals everyday. I cant say enough about this property, our friends are extremely impressed. 5 stars all around.
