Riu Palace Mexico abounds with European flourishes such as hand painted murals, floral ceilings rimmed in gold, and a tiny Spanish chapel. Splashing fountains, statues, gazebos, and wrought iron benches rest in a romantic courtyard beneath the shade of towering palms, while sprays of bougainvillea adorn slanted sun-shelters by two magnificent pools.

La Bodega, Don Julian, El Patio, and La Traviata restaurants offer specialty a la carte dishes and spectacular buffets. Recently revamped menus now offer a wide range of cuisine and finer ingredients at the a la carte restaurants, as well as the incorporation of a vegetarian menu in all restaurants. A lavish nightclub in whimsical design hosts nightly entertainment, and a pristine white beach along the mesmerizing turquoise sea promises to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Deluxe and spacious guestrooms (mostly split-level) were renovated in 2012. All are beautifully decorated in rich wood and granite rose tile, offering a sitting area with mini-fridge and bar.

Endless amenities include waiter service at the renovated pool area, snorkeling, windsurfing, body boarding, kayaking, and scuba lessons in the pool! Riu Palace Mexico provides the best entertainment for adults and children. RiuLand Kids' Club offers activities for the little ones.

Excellent service and amenities.

Besides the beautiful hotel, room, courtyard, beach and pool, the top notch food, the staff really was the highlight. The attitude of the staff and caring service they gave is what really made this hotel from very good to excellent. These people were trained well and cared about their job and making you feel important and that you truly were on a vacation. Thank you for everything we will be back.

We decided to stay at the Riu Palace Mexico so we could go to all the other Riu Hotels in the area. There was no need this resort had everything we needed. Everything was modernized and we did miss the old decor. Staff was wonderful.

We just got back from a 7 night stay at RUI Palace Mexico. We booked this hotel due to the ability to use the facilities at the neighboring RUI hotels, such as pools restaurants etcs. We were very disappointed to find out that we could use the beach and pools and get drinks from other bars but were unable to eat at their restaurants. So for a 7 night stay there was only 4 options of food to pick from (1 restaurant was always closed). The hotel room we booked was supposed to be a KING but it was 2 queen beds put together. The hotel room itself was ok, it was extremely muggy and sticky at all times there was no vents for the shower so all your clothes stayed damp and started to smell... The beach was nice and big plenty of chairs. All the staff was friendly. There wasn't much to do around the hotel and no gift shops really. I am comparing this vacation to the last one i went to in mexico which was The Grand Palladium and LOVED it there. It's a nice small quiet resort but i wouldn't go back.

The vacation from hell

Lets start with transportation. Don't take the Apple Vacation provided airport to hotel transportation. The transportation is not exclusive to your hotel, it can be any hotel property. We spent hours in a hot uncomfortable van. The actual ride is 45 minutes from Cancun Airport to Riu Palace Mexico, and the cost is only $40USD. Upon arrival the hotel front desk staff was highly inattentive, there were 6 hotel staff at the desk, but only one of those people were checking people in. There was only one other couple checking in and at the desk in general. The desk staff ignored us as we waited approximately 15 minutes to be served. During that time any one of the staff members could have discontinued what they were doing to acknowledge us or inform us that we were waiting for the one staff member checking people in. Once attended to, we were upgraded to a jacuzzi room. Our room was great looking, however over the course of our stay we learned it's downfalls. First of all the room would never cool below 24 degrees celsius, or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a ceiling fan but when on high overnight to provide comfort, it dried out our eyes and sinuses. The tub, shower, and sinks were all crusted with hard water scale. The property should take better care of weekly maintenance to prevent this. We had to clean our shower's rainfall water head in order for it to spray a normal pattern. The sinks were almost unusable as the mesh diffusers were caked with water scale that beyond a trickle the water sprayed all over the counter. The tub was unusable as it produced a very disgusting tub filled with brown water which left a ring on the tub. The food and dining staff were excellent! The drinks seemed a bit watered down, had to order doubles, and most soft drinks from the fountain were flat. Look for the bottled soft drinks. The beach was meticulously maintained and a walk down the coast showed the staff kept up on the seaweed maintenance. Unfortunately we met the hotel doctor during our visit due to a fall. The entire place is tile and combined with evening humidity is very slick. If you need to see the doctor be sure to have cash, and even though the doctor is RIU staff, you can't charge his $140USD fee to your room.

We have stayed at this resort at least 12 times. Always had good service. We have known most of staff all this time and they always remember you and what your likes are. Seems the quality of linens, towels have declined. Resort is also showing age even though it was updated a few years back. We will still visit here and have always been pleased with RIU Chain hotels esp Palace level

Great location, right on the beach with plenty of sun lounges for everyone. Staff were very polite and helpful. The lawns were immaculate! There was a number of restaurants and a buffet to get food. No complaints from us it was all vert lovely. Only one swim up bar. Room smelt musty and the paint job was dreadful needing more then just the one coat of paint this made it feel old and as if it was not in good shape. The bathroom was fully open to the rest of the room except the toilet which had a door. If you got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and needed to put the light on, because it was not enclosed it would wake my partner up. Entertainment aimed at children and older people and really wasn't worth the effort.

Great visit, a few things that could be done better.

We stayed here from March 11-18, it was my second time at a Riu resort and my first time at a palace. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet resort. I’d place this as a 4-4.5/5 stars. Check in process was smooth as can be. Luggage arrived promptly. Had some issues with our cards deactivating which apparently happens if you put them too close to your cell phone. Our room was spacious and lovely. Very clean. Only fault would be that our shampoo and conditioner bottles were half full when we got there. Stocked mini bar and 4 types of liquor at our disposal. Bathroom is a bit odd as it’s one tiny room with just the toilet and a garbage can while the rest of the bathroom was deprecate. We had a king size bed which was very comfortable. Unfortunately our view was of the side of another hotel. Housekeeping: we noticed our sheets weren’t changed any of the times they did our room. They never replenished the shampoos or conditioners. Otherwise did a good job. Service: all in all the service was fantastic. Always smiling, eager to help. Best I’ve seen at an all inclusive. Food: by far the best I’ve had at an all inclusive. aside from the Mexican restaurant for lunch we actually regretably didn’t try any of the a la cartes because the buffet was so so good. The tacos at the Mexican restaurant were amazing and same applies to the ones they have every night at the buffet. Variety was outstanding and we never had an issue finding anything to eat. Loved the cappuccino bar. Shoutout to Yairis at the crepe station. Entertainment: we only saw the rock show and the Mexican show. The rock show was a cover band who did all the classics and I thought they did a great job. The Mexican show was really well done too, showcasing different Mexican dances from all the regions of Mexico. We went over to the tequila for the neon party. We found the resort to be very dull after midnight, absolutely nothing to do. Nobody is in the 24 hour lounge. We went over to the tequila a few times and found the same issue, my friend said “it’s almost like they want us to be in bed by midnight” as both resorts shut the lights off early. We were pretty frigging bored. Beach: beautiful. The first few days we had some seaweed that the maintenance team did a good job getting rid of. If you swam a few feet in the seaweed would clear, it was by no means un-swimmable even on those days. The rest of the time the water was crystal clear albeit very wavy. White soft sand, lots going on. Just perfect. A few real cons: NO STRAWS. Yes I get it, I’m all for the environment. Here in Canada the transition to biodegradable straws is being made, we get little cardboard straws instead. Why can’t this resort do that? It makes drinking a slushy drink very hard. Second was how the food in the 24 lounge was always old and lukewarm. Very poor selection and there’s no microwave to heat up our cold food. Room service was very limited too. Overall we had a great stay. I personally would not stay here again as I didn’t realize how quiet it would be but Id highly recommend it for anyone wanting a relaxing getaway.

First visit to Playa del carmen

We arrived on January 12 in the evening and we were able to get into the buffet restaurant before closing. We loved the pool areas and the beach is just 100 yards from the pools. The lunch buffet is near the pool area and is a great a wide assortment of fruits, drinks, desserts and food. The breakfast and dinner buffet are at the large restaurant near the front of the court yard and is not lacking in food and the desserts are very good. We really enjoyed are time at Rui Palace Mexico.

Just back from a week at this resort. Our experience there can be best summarized by one word .... AWESOME. This was our first visit to a Riu property and will definitely not be our last. We always say that we will never return to the same resort twice .... the world having so much to offer. However, this resort ticked off so many boxes and everything was just so good, that we are left to ask for more. This is a real 5 star resort. Everything was 5 star. We had asked for a room as close to the beach as possible, on an upper floor with king bed. We got exactly what we asked for .... room 2132 ... perfect. Where do I start with this place .... I think the best place to start is the service. Riu must be known for its service. Every employee we met always had a smile on their face. Always friendly and polite. Amazing service. Never did I feel obliged to tip ... when I did tip, it was always received with a smile and it almost felt like I shouldn’t be tiping ! The employees all looked like they enjoyed their work and wanted to be there. Well done Riu ! Sitting on the beach there was always a waiter coming by offering whatever you wanted to drink ! Talking about the beach ... there was never an issus finding a lounger or shade on this wonderful beach. As for the food ... very tasty ! Our fav was “Krystal”, the fusion restaurant. The filet mignon aka beef tenderloin was just great and well cooked. As an appetizer, the ceviche was just amazing. The breakfast buffet was always plentiful and varied. Lunch at the beach restaurant was always good, with my favorite being a type of Mexican paella with huge prawns, scallops, calamari and octopus .....mmmmmm .... Overall the food was amazing. My only negative comments would be at the Steakhouse where it seamed that it didn’t matter how you wanted your steak done, they always came out well done. Also, we were a little put off by the lack of Mexican food at the buffet. No tacos, no fajitas, ... As for the drinks, very good service and great drinks. On the wine front, you asked for a glass and they brought you the bottle. A good variety of Spanish wines. I have to mention the lobby piano bar. Great margaritas and great service. Thank you guys ! All in all, great service, great food, great drinks, comfortable room and wonderful people. Keep it up Riu ! Thank you for a great vacation.

Two fabulous weeks.

Previuosly stayed at this hotel about six years ago before it had a refit and I must say it is still as good. Check in was good a welcome drink and swift check in by Carlos and our bags arrived at our room minutes after us excellent service. The room was lovely and had a lovely view of the main walk way and we could also sit on our balcony in the early evening and watch the band playing. The room was kept spotlessly clean by the lovely Louisa who’s English was limited but she always had a lovely smile for us. The beach area is probably the best we have ever seen lots of space and plenty of beds, yes there is seaweed but the lads work there backs of to try and get rid of it. It was lovely to see lots of familiar faces in the buffet restaurant and the food in there was better than we remembered special thanks go to Santioa , Nellias and Miguel who looked after us well. All staff work so hard and make the hotel what it is . The speciality restaurants were probably not as good as we remembered with quite limited menus and we preferred it when there was two sittings. The lobby bar is a lovely place to sit and have a quiet drink, Remi must be the speediest waiter ever !!!!! Far too many lovely people to thank but the lovely girl in the towel kiosk was a delight and special thanks go to Juaquin for making my birthday holiday a very special memory. Wouldn’t hesitate to return and recommend this hotel to others. Thanks Rui Palace keep up the good work.
