Not long returned home from an 11-night stay at the Riu Macao. Welcome: The transfer from the airport was swift and we were soon met at the hotel by one of the front of house staff. We were served a cool soft drink whilst the lady gave a brief overview of the complex and its facilities and our bags were taken away to be dropped off at our rooms. The foyer/lounge area was instantly impressive and the other persons on reception seemed cheery. Accommodation: Unfortunately the next part of our experience was the only thing that let the hotel down. We entered the lift which was old and rickety and in need of some general repair. Upon entering our room we noticed our balcony was no more than four square feet, only partially lit by sun and staring at an opposite wall. When trying to open the screen door (there was a locking door and a mosquito screen door) the handle almost came off in our hands. After managing to open the door, the partial sea view which the booking had stated, was observed by severely leaning over the railing and wrenching your neck to the left. This was not a balcony for enjoying a morning coffee or a relaxing cuba libre in the evening whilst getting ready for dinner. Another thing to dampen our initial experience was that the fridge had not been emptied of half-drunken bottles and litter. The safe was also out of action meaning we had nowhere to store our valuables for the first night and had to carry a backpack with us to dinner. We mentioned all of these things to the TUI rep at the welcome meeting the next morning and all was sorted by midday. Food and Drink: One thing that no guest can say is that the offer of food and drink is not plentiful. The gap between breakfast and lunch is only 30 minutes and the break from lunch to dinner is just over an hour, meaning you are always catered for no matter when you get hungry. The range of food was more than satisfactory, however I would not know how the food is received by anyone with dietary needs. Fresh meat and fish were always on the menu and many side dishes always accompanied them. A personal favourite was whereby one evening the chef at the rear of the restaurant was carving fresh roast topside of beef, the taste of which would easily better many restaurants in the UK. Drinks orders were taken promptly and repeatedly by the attentive waiting on team. There were no restrictions on having a Mimosa for breakfast or having your wine glass filled ten times during dinner. Staff: Almost all customer facing staff were amazing. The odd one struggled a smile or weren't forthcoming with manners but that is it. Although it was Domingo who initially welcomed us to the restaurant each day, it was Aquino and Alvino(sp?) who stole the show in the end. Domingo had supplied us with endless Mamajuana for the first few nights but after a few days we were offered seats in a different section. This is where the true double act of Aquino and Alvino (I think that was the second guy's name) came in. Their English was amazing and so was their wit. Between the two of them, they entertained us and another couple for the remainder of our holiday. The pool and beach staff were a bit hit and miss as I imagine its very difficult to be cheery all day when you are having to walk around collecting drinks orders in 30'c heat. It appeared that if you weren't a big tipper then they could "accidently" miss you out on occasion. However, a special mention to Angel who served drinks on the beach. He was the most polite and most courteous. Entertainment: The entertainment in the hotel was very basic and reminiscent of children's entertainment at Butlins. Poorly executed dance routines round the pool and half hearted "fete" games cheapened the overall experience. As this was an adult only hotel I felt this whole approach unnecessary. In the evening soft music was played in the bar and the same entertainment team were expected to dance with guests. This was very profound as it was almost a parody of Dirty Dancing, just without the good dancers. I'm not sure who found the dancing more awkward, the guest or the employee. Housekeeping: Biggest surprise of the hotel goes to this department. The housekeepers work ridiculously long hours and go to extreme lengths to please the guests. We noticed than almost every day, our room had been visited by housekeepers on multiple occasions. They appear to be perfectionists and still have time to say hello. To note: The beach has seaweed on it. Shocking I know. There is a team of people who patrol the beach every morning and remove the excessive seaweed where possible. Apart from one stormy night which brought in more seaweed than usual, the line of seaweed along the beach was never more than half a metre in depth. The beach itself is amazing. More than enough sun loungers are available and as mentioned, the waiters will come to you for drinks orders. There are vendors walking along the beach to sell pictures with Monkeys, Parrots and Iguana's as well as paintings and cigars etc but should you not be interested a simple "no thankyou" will encourage them to continue onwards. The sports bar in the adjacent Riu Bambu is not quite the attraction we thought. In our experience the channels shown are just the same channels in your room and the broadcasts are not live. However it was nice to get a change of atmosphere. Room service options are very, very poor. Going off memory, there were only five things offered on the room service menu. Two were salads, two were sandwiches and nachos. We did see one person walk through the restaurant in pyjamas and a hoody around 8pm and take two plates of food out with them so I guess they wanted something more than the five-food room menu.... The evening music/entertainment finishes in the hotel quite early and sometimes continues in the nearby casino. Not only did we not frequent the casino because we have heard some tales about it, but I think cutting the music short to entice you somewhere else in the complex is a bit naughty. **********************

I have seen 29 Caribbean islands and stayed so many five star hotels. It is a lovely adult only hotel and as well as all of the staff but the hotel is self is not more than 4 stars. Same lunch for 14 days, smaller and uncomfortable pillows, tough bed not a 5 star standards. But in a lovely location if you don’t want to go out which is no where near by to go any way:)

Excellent hotel within a complex of 4 other RIU hotels. Not far from the airport. There is a row of shops between the hotels which you can stroll along in the evenings. Food brilliant with lots of choice. There is a Water Park within the grounds but separate from the hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would return again in the future.

Excellent service

Just returned home after an 11 night stay at the RIU Macao. Travelled as a couple and had a fantastic time. Booked through First Choice / Tui. This hotel is lovely but advertised as a 5 star. It is not, probably more likely a 4 star. There are areas that are desperately in need of a refurbishment, including the rooms and pools. On arrival we were greeted with a drink and given keys and details about our stay. Reception staff very good. However we were offered an upgrade straight away (alarm bells) before seeing the room. My view is that a 5 star room should be quality and no need for an upgrade? We were in room 3084, a ground floor room, as requested, with a side view of the neighbouring hotel. I have no doubt the room was once a lovely 5 star room years ago. Unfortunately it is no longer a 5 star room. It has a damp smell, tatty furniture, dated patio door. The shower is very good. There is a free safe, mini bar fridge and optics. There are 6 restaurants including the buffet ones. We only used the 2 buffet restaurants. There is one for lunch and evening meals. The food was excellent, so much choice of meats, fish, veg, pizza, salads, sweets etc. Honestly so much and very good. Staff were always on hand offering excellent service. I can only remember Daniel who was brilliant. The other 4 restaurants are speciality, Italian, Steakhouse, Fusion and Japanese. Like I say we didn't use them but I heard various reviews from others who had. I believe they open 2 per night. There is also a cafe open most of the day offering drinks, cakes, sandwiches and fruit and salad packs. Brilliant service. Most of the staff at the Macao are brilliant, offering an excellent service. Drinks were very good and also good range of cocktails. Waiter service around the hotel was excellent. I can only remember Sanchez who again was excellent. The pool area is very nice with 3 pools and a large selection of loungers and beds. The pools are nice but as mentioned earlier are in need of some work on missing tiles etc. There is always plenty of poolside entertainment going on with hotel entertainment team. They were very good and have so much energy. I can only remember Binny who was brilliant but all were very good. They also provided the evening entertainment. We only watched a few nights and wasn't overly impressed with them but I can't deny thier hard work and energy. The live music bought in sometimes in the evenings is very good. The hotel is located on the beach alongside other RIU hotels. You are allowed access to some of the facilities at these. Like others have mentioned there is a lot of seaweed on the beach but this wasn't really a bother and expected. Be prepared to get pestered by all sorts of people trying to sell things or even photos with monkeys and birds. My advice is say no straight away and offer no encouragement at all. This includes any shop anywhere on the island. We booked 4 excursions through Tui. These were expensive but mostly good and enjoyable. The Outback Adventure and Santo Domingo trips were really good and guides Eddy and Kevin were made for their jobs. All in all we had a brilliant time and would stay again but this is no longer a 5 star hotel and shouldn't be advertised on Tui as one.

Just returned from this hotel. Been many times to Bavaro but first time at this hotel. Had a lovely week here, the food is good with plenty of choice, the drinks were good & the coffee shop serves great coffee & pastries. The staff here are fantastic & so helpful with a big smile on their face. The entertainment team are probably the best I’ve known, special mention to Enrico! The beach was not cleared of seaweed as much as the Bahia principe beach (I stayed at Ambar Blue in April), it did not spoil my experience though but the beach front at Bahia & Iberostar fronts were much nicer for photos etc. Overall I would recommend this hotel and I would definately return here. The staff are genuinely lovely hardworking people that want you to enjoy your time there. The rooms are a little dated but do have everything you need in them & who goes to a beautiful place & spends their time sat in the room? Angel the bar waiter makes sure you always have a drink in your hand without having to leave your sun-lounger & the pool activities are very entertaining even if you don’t want to participate! It is a small property compared to the other neighbouring Riu hotels, but it is much more relaxing & no screaming kids running round is a bonus!! I would go back here although my favourite resort in Bavaro is Ambar Blue but the Riu Macao comes in second....
