We went in February for our honeymoon...everything was perfect. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel like we were the only guests there. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, the grounds are immaculate, the pools are refreshing, and the food is amazing. We couldn't ask for anything more. We are already planning our next visit.

Nice place to stay

Went to Riu Palace in Costa Rica for week in Jan 2019. This is a typical Riu Palace with some good things and some not so good. We usually stay at Palace in Aruba so sometimes was comparing in my mind The grounds were immaculate. The staff was always doing something. The staff was the best I’ve seen anywhere. They always smiled, always said hello, always had time to talk to you and answer any questions The rooms were very clean and cleaned early in the day. The mini bar was refilled every day and if you wanted something extra they brought it. Also the rooms were not musty. The tub in the middle of the room was a bit weird Chairs were easy to get and the pools were perfect They have buffets but I wasn’t all that impressed with the dinners but others said they were great We went to the steak house one night and it was terrible The steaks were under cooked and we even sent back a hamburger because it was blood red We arrived late so only had the 24 hour place to get some food. The food there made airline food look great This hotel is in the middle of nowhere so at night all you have to do is the nightly entertainment or the casino across the road Would I recommend this hotel....yes

My husband and I along with another couple visited the Riu palace Feb 4-11. Upon arrival, our check in was fast and details on the resort explained well. I should state that I had emailed the resort one month prior to our stay, and let them know we were celebrating our anniversary, and although we had already upgraded to a “ocean view “ room, if there was anything they could do to make our stay more romantic and comfortable we would appreciate it. We were surprised to know our room was on the first level, knowing there would be no chance of an Ocean view, and we were right. Upon entering, the room looked nice from the door but further inspection the room was not very nice at all. There was back splatter on the mirror and walls behind sink, the side tables were all scratched looked like they’ve been there for 20 years, the bath tub had residue scum build up along the sides, our mini fridge was warm, nothing was cold in it, and the complimentary champagne they left for us was put on the dresser, probably because they knew putting it in the fridge was pointless. The shower was nice, although I was skeptic about how clean it actually was. The bed was ok at best, but the pillows were lumpy and the top covers were not soft and scratched at your skin. Our friends had similar complaints about their room, they did not upgrade and was given the exact same room as our non “ocean view”. Now the food was great, no complaints there. It was difficult to get into some restaurants because they don’t take reservations so it was first come first. Breakfast, lunc h and dinner buffets were tasty. The alcohol was good, wine not so much, unless your a fan of Gato Negro. They have a cute coffee bar that was nice. The sports bar is more like a cafeteria lounge with nothing going on. The biggest complaint we had about this resort is the lack of atmosphere. After 10pm when the main show is done they literally shut down all music , turn lights off, I’m assuming they are trying to get everyone to the disco which wouldn’t be a horrible thing except YOU HAVE TO PAY for your drinks when you get there, the same as the casino. I’m pretty sure I went to an all inclusive to not have to pay for food and drinks. We went in one night and there was 11 people in there, most likely everyone was avoiding it like we had been because you have to pay extra. Even by the pools during the day there’s no atmosphere. Some music here and there and the occasional volleyball game but that’s it. Night life was such a disappointment. It’s $29 pp to leave the country, you must pay at airport. Highlights of the trip: Walk down the beach and check out the monkey bar, around that area a family of monkeys show up that we were able to feed fruit to. If your looking to go on excursions go down to the beach and ask the locals if Cesar is around, this guy was amazing, friendly and professional he can customize any tour for you and it’s much cheaper than going through the resort, he also can taxi you places for less money. Our ATV tour with cedar was unreal and we highly recommend. Go visit coco beach, not far from resort, nice bars, beautiful beach and many shops. The beach in the resort doesn’t look like it generates a lot of traffic, the poor dogs down there look so skinny and hungry so try to bring them down a snack. Wildlife sanctuary and Ziplining combo tour was a cool experience. Staff were friendly and hard working. Nano the photographer is amazing but be prepared to be robbed blind by the price of those pictures. Overall I would not recommend this resort to friends nor would I return. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great. We will be returning to Costa Rica in September but will be renting a house.

There is so much to do and see I'm not sure where to start! The resort is beautiful, clean and there is so much to do. There are four restaurants, a large buffet room with fresh, made to order choices. The fresh fruit and juices were outstanding. The restaurants were equally as wonderful. They fill quickly so an early dinner is recommended. If they do fill up or run out of some selections, do not be discouraged, go back the next day. There are several pools with activities going on all the time. If you prefer not to join in, no problem, there are plenty of chairs and places to be. The beach also has several activities and the water is warm and beautiful. The beach is not white like the Caribbean. It has a different look but is clean, fun and equally as enjoyable. The beach vendors are plentiful. Again, don't be discouraged, remember, this is how they make a living. We have brought back some fun souvenirs. We especially enjoy the beach massages! At a fraction of the price of the resort, we enjoyed one the week we were there while our friends went three times! The entertainment was great. Great dancers, music and shows. If that's not your cup of tea, there is a fun lobby bar and coffee cafe 24/7. There are endless excursions to take advantage of. We did the sunset catamaran cruise. It was phenominal. The service and the people did a great job. They were kind, patient and spot on the second you needed something. We saw whales, fish and the dancing rays. We also did the water taxi to Playa de Coco. The water taxi ride was a riot, Coco Beach is full of great shops, restaurants and locals. It's all what you make it. We loved it and will definitely go back. This is a lovely secluded area with plenty to do. If you see reviews complaining of the lack of activity or it's too hot, take it with a grain of salt. The weather is hot, it's Costa Rica. There is plenty of breeze. There is plenty of activity and amazing food. The staff at every single level was fantastic. Room service, housekeeping, beach and bar, and more were the kindest, most welcoming people we've experienced. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and spacious. Everyone speaks english, which is wonderful, but since you are visiting their country, brush up on a few words to chat with them. Nothing is perfect so take the negative reviews in stride. Don't go during the rainy season and don't expect people to hold your had for something to do every minute. Think outside the box and enjoy it to the fullest.
