A Wonderful Place to Stay in Costa Rica
Debbie A,

Loved Costa Rica!!! The Riu Palace was a beautiful place to stay. Very clean, everyone waited on you and knew what you needed before you said anything. Gina Mora was exceptional! Wasn't impressed with the food, however, the selection was more than enough. People were genuinely nice and helpful. Less commercial than a Cancun. Excursions a must to see how the people of Costa Rica live. Highly recommend.

We have just got back from a week at the Riu Palace, about 40 minutes transfer and we were greeted with cold drinks while we checked in which was done at speed and although there was a full bus load of people this only took about 10 minutes and i was one of the last to check in. The room was very nice and we had asked for a room with a view of the rain forest which is what we got and so glad we did i think this would be the best view after walking round the hotel grounds. I have only gave this 4 stars because not all the restaurants were open every night and you did not know what was going to be open until the night so hard to plan where you would like to eat, that said the food was amazing and i have to give a massive shout out to Gina Mora who worked in the The main buffet restaurant, she was wonderful and nothing was to much trouble for her drinks were topped up before you got to the bottom of your glass. The range of food on offer was amazing. We went on two trips that we booked on the beach, the first was a trip down a river for a couple of hours followed by a traditional lunch, we then went of to see Sloths, Dart frogs and Red eyed tree frogs. we booked this with John Wayne on the beach. The second trip was booked with a chap called Nito and this was a boat trip across the pacific ocean to a private beach just the two of us for a very good price, on this trip we saw pelicans, flying fish, rays jumping out the sea and a raccoon. the beach that we went to was beautiful so i decided this was a good a location as any to propose to my girlfriend (she said yes) you can find Nito on the beach to the left around a 1000 yard walk near the Monkey bar. both trips were great and do not worry about booking on the beach with a small deposit and the rest to be paid on the morning of the trip. All in all a great holiday and we will be going back (honeymoon i think).

Pretty Good honeymoon!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon and for the most part, enjoyed our stay. We got “stuck” with Riu Palace after changing our honeymoon destination semi-last-minute, and this was the only All-inclusive resort that still had space available. However, aside from the food not being too spectacular, we enjoyed our stay! First: the staff is SO friendly and everyone always has a smile on their face. We did not encounter anyone who didn’t speak English or at least speak it well enough to communicate with. When we arrived, there was a bottle of wine and honeymoon packet waiting for us in the room. A few hours after check in, we came back to the room & found a SECOND bottle of wine and a plate of fresh fruit. The room: the room is extremely contemporary and does seem a little out of place when you compare it to the design of the rest of the resort but we had an awesome view of the pools and beach from our balcony on the 5th floor. Our room was very clean and we always had plenty of fresh towels as well as a fully stocked refrigerator with plenty of sodas to make mixed drinks from the liquor dispensers. Every morning they brought a brand new MASSIVE bottle of water, too. The only knock on the room we had was the bathtub was extremely narrow. FOOD: this is the biggest complaint we had. The food just wasn’t what we expected it to be. - La Anforna (Italian): we ate here on Monday right after check-in as we were stuck at airport customs for 2 hours and so we were STARVING...the front desk suggested we eat here, so after check in we rushed down. It was about 4:30; we started at their anti pasta buffet that had several bread and pasta options (ravioli, bolognese lasagna, pasta with marinara etc.) as well as a salad & dessert bar. We had some appetizers which were all delicious, but when we ordered from the menu we honestly barely touched our food because it was NOT good. I ordered a mushroom and cheese lasagna and my husband ordered a spaghetti dish and my dish was so salty that I couldn’t finish it. So..buffet = good, regular menu for us was not! Papagayo (steak house): This is the only restaurant you need reservations at, but we ate here for lunch since the only restaurants open for lunch was Arenal (where we had breakfast every morning) and Papagayo..so we opted for the steak house. It was buffet-style and just wasn’t anything to write home about. A lot of the food was bland and it just overall was not memorable. Maybe it was different for dinner, but other people who we spoke with said it was not good for dinner either. Krystal (fusion): we ate dinner here and it was pretty good. We ordered beef tenderloin with quinoa and asparagus (although the asparagus must have been chopped up and stir fried in the quinoa because we were expecting stemmed asparagus and didn’t get that!). It was pretty good, definitely better than La’Anforna. It was not buffet-style and we had appetizers, a main course and dessert. Tokio (Japanese): we ate dinner our last night here and this was our favorite place! We had sushi to share & spring rolls for our appetizers, I ordered chicken satee and my husband ordered shiitake-crusted steak. Both were delicious! Arenal: we had breakfast here every morning and did not get a chance to have dinner here BUT the breakfast buffet was AMAZING. Every day they had assorted muffins, donuts, and croissants, sandwiches, fruit, cereal, eggs a dozen ways...so many options. I had the chef make me an omelette every day and was NOT disappointed. Breakfast was our favorite meal :) BEACH & POOL: Do not come here if you want to beach bum - there is virtually nowhere to sit on the beach as far as chairs and there are lots of vendors. The sand is the black-volcanic sand which isn’t bad but is not *my* choice of sand. We walked on the beach one night and that’s about it. The pools are very nice and clean, tons of places to sit, lots of activities, and the bars are nice. I wasn’t disappointed with the drinks we got at the bars or the restaurants: mixed drinks and the wine were all very good for us! One thing we really enjoyed was our excursions through CATours. They pick up from our resort so that was nice when we did the Arenal volcanic hike & the zip line/ horseback / hot springs excursion. Overall it was an awesome experience, the resort is gorgeous, but the food could be better. We will definitely return to Costa Rica but will explore other resorts!

Relaxing and fun vacation

Just returned from a 6 night stay at the palace, I will try to detail our experience as best I can and point out things we have read in other reviews as well along the way. Check In - We arrived in early afternoon, and while we did not receive the normal cool beverage like we do in other riu properties , we were checked in immediately (prior to 3 pm) and were taken to our room followed by our luggage. seamless and friendly check in, issued pool and towel keys and given general directions on layout of the resort. Room - we had emailed ahead (this works people if you put the effort in) and requested king bed, floor 4 or higher overlooking pools and ocean, we were not disappointed. the room was clean and we had said we were celebrating our anniversary so there was a bottle of champagne in the room with a nice note. The rooms here are ultra contemporary, but clean and have a small couch, tv with only 2 English channels, a small table and chairs and a huge tub in the middle of the room that we never used, odd layout...each day our maid arranged nice towel art on the bed and the bed was made perfectly and room cleaned well each day. mini fridge was restocked each day, and the in room coffee was actually rather good. The only downside was we always had to call to request hand towels and wash clothes as they were never provided. We also carry and additional safe lock and always lock our suitcases when not in the room, no issues with theft at all. Pillows on the bed not the best. Staff - The staff all work very very hard, cleaning, bartenders, pool service, waiters, clerks, everyone was friendly and welcoming, please tip them we always tipped at the meals and about every second drink round . We left tips for room cleaning staff as well. Pool area - lots of pools here to find one that fits your taste, lots of activities for those who like the games, during the day. We never dared go in the bar pool as those who went in never got out to use the restroom--kind of gross...there is a restroom at the steak house only a 2 min walk from the pools that is very easy to get to I am not sure why people don't use it. pools were clean and yes some tiles missing but not what I would consider in disrepair. There were always available chairs and lots of umbrellas and shade tops there chairs were mesh and more comfy than the padded kind to me. Beach - to be fair and honest, if you are a beach person, this probably isn't your type of location, it is volcanic sand so not nice to look at and not really many good places to hang out on the beach, lots of trees near the beach and the water is not what one sees in places with the clear blue water resorts...but we knew that before we booked so we were fine with just walking on the beach. The Hotel and Grounds - immaculate, clean and comfortable, the staff works very hard to keep the place looking great and it shows, the interior spaces were spotless. -Bars and restaurants - we had drinks at most of the bars and were never disappointed, though we mostly drink mojhitos (I take mine with vodka instead of rum..try it) the coffee place did a great job and was a nice place to sit and chat. we ate at all the dining options over the time of our stay, I wont go into each one individually but we found something we liked in each place to eat and really never walked away hungry. the 247 lounge has the worst food as it is never hot and seems to have just been sitting there all day long, a shame because the space is great. I have read people talking about seating times, let me explain this, there are NO seating times, there are schedules that show the earliest and latest times to be seated you just show up when you can to see if they have space, we only ever had to wait at the steak house and that was only for 15 mins, Excursions - we booked through CAT Central American Tours for the Arenal Volcano trip a good experience though a long ride as you go up and over the mountains, but a great view of lake arenal, the volcano, a rainforest explore trip and then off to Balsi hot springs for a soak and lunch. We also did the waterfall and horseback riding trip, saw 3 waterfalls with time to swim in the final big one at the end, then rode horses for 45 mins to get back to the top...had a great time!!! then lunch which was great as well. ---as a side note we took school supplies for the local children with us and our CAT rep contacted the school principle for us, arranged a transport and 2 interpreters so we could deliver these things in person, meet the children and learn about the schools in Costa Rica, they provided this service for free so a shout out to Erica at Central American Tours for her amazing help. we tool a trip to Diamante Park near the resort just for the animals, its a free shuttle from the resort. We also took a shuttle to Coco Beach for souvenir's and to see the town...not much to write home about, just a dirty little strip of shops and bars/restaurants. Overall a great experience with few complaints about the actual resort we will definitely be returning someday.

Nice Hotel Shame about the Food & Entertainment

The hotel is newish (2012) and well maintained. The rooms were large and air conditioned but not appointed sympathetically with the environment or Costa Rica. Looking out to see the rooms on the right hand side either looked out over the pool and complex or the other hotel, not good. The left hand side rooms either looked out over the pool and complex, not good or over the rainforest, brilliant. The food and drink was all inclusive and had a fantastic range but was very poor quality, made from cheap ingredients and tasteless. Drinks were made from sweet sickly syrup instead of fresh fruit. There is limited space to walk within the complex, with about half a mile of beach front. After the third day of walking it got a bit sameish. We saw Howler monkeys, squirrels, iguanas and birds from our room overlooking the rainforest. The TUI Grand Tour is fantastic. Our guides Edwardo and Herman could not do enough for us and were fantastic spotters. We saw three species several times of the four that inhabit Costa Rica, two toed and three toed sloths several time, hundreds of birds, tarantulas, armadillos, squirrels, coati and a tree possum.
