Our holiday

Ok, so my review of the hotel..... we had a room on fourth floor to the left of hotel (4119). Every afternoon about 4 ish howler monkeys would come into the trees and stay for about an hour. We watched from our balcony, beautiful sight! They also visit trees in car park and if you didn’t know there is a small walk running the length of left hand side of hotel which has an exercise trail (I didn’t exercise though 😂). The rooms do not smell it’s the air conditioning and you get use to it. Plenty of hot water in room and no issues with room. So much food to choose from but not always as hot as I’d like. Steakhouse restaurant is very nice and so is Italian. The staff work tirelessly to make your holiday. The entertainment was not my cup of tea but I can’t fault the time and effort the team put in. The weather was ridiculously hot. The beach is beautiful, warm waters but not crystal clear and the sand is dark not white but don’t be put off. This is a beautiful hotel and we had s great holiday. Enjoy your time there.

Relaxing week at a great resort!
SMW236, Baltimore, Maryland

We spent a wonderful, relaxing week at the Riu Palace, May 4-11, 2018. TIPS: (1) Don’t stress about the weather forecast! We almost cancelled our trip because the weather channel app was showing rain/storms everyday, sometimes all day. But, in 1 week, there was 1 rain shower that lasted about 5 minutes. We didn’t even have to leave the pool! (2) Definitely take a walk down the beach to see the monkeys! You don’t have to go to the Monkey Bar. There is a path into the woods right across from the Monkey Bar, and you will see tons of monkeys if you go in the morning (we went between 8:00-9:00 am). Take some fruit, and the monkeys will take it out of your hand! They seemed to like grapes, pineapple and watermelon. We also saw several howlers in the trees near the beach! (3) If you are not planning to stay up late, you do NOT want a room near the stage. We were in room 5057, on the top floor, but directly above the stage, and it was very loud at night! In fairness to the hotel, we did not ask to be moved, so I really can’t complain. But, if you want a quiet room, I would avoid the rooms that end in 50-60 on each floor. (4) Book the round trip transfers to/from the airport along with your reservation. It was only $60 for 2 people, round trip, and we had no issues with the transportation (it was through Nexus). (5) Try not to forget anything! I had to buy hair bands at the on-site store, and they were $6. As other reviews mentioned, I noticed that sunscreen was VERY expensive, like $40+ per bottle. PROS: (1) Hotel is approximately 40 minutes from the Liberia airport. (2) Check-in was easy and well organized. I emailed the hotel (customerservices.palacecostarica@riu.com) and asked a question; they responded and also asked that I provided the names and passport numbers of people in my party. I did this, and they confirmed the reservation via email. We arrived around 2:00 pm, check-in was fast, and our room was ready. (3) Rooms are exactly as pictured online (with bathtub in the middle of the room). It’s not necessarily my style, but there were no surprises. Shower was large, and king bed was comfy. (4) The room, and the hotel in general, was very clean and well-kept. (5) Staff was friendly. I’ve read reviews that say you need to tip to get good service. In my opinion, you should be tipping, because the staff works hard and provides good service. I saw others around us not tipping, and they seemed to be getting the same courteous service that we received. Drink service at the pool was particularly great! (6) Excursions were easy to book through the tour companies in the hotel (we used Nexus); you can find various tour companies in the lobby bar during the day. I read some reviews that said the tour companies were overpriced, but I disagree. We booked an all-day (12 hour) excursion to the rain forest, Arenal and the hot springs for $120 per person through Nexus. It included a driver, bilingual guide, entrance to Arenal, buffet lunch and entrance to the hot springs resort for about 2.5 hours. I've read that it's cheaper to book with the private providers on the beach, but I can't speak to that. I liked booking through the tour company at the hotel, because we were able to use a credit card. (7) Diamante Adventure Park is right next door. We also booked an excursion to Diamante for ziplining and the animal sanctuary. It is a 5 minute trip from the hotel, and shuttles leave every 30 minutes starting at 8:30 am. We enjoyed the animal sanctuary, and ziplining was fun and safe. (8) Pools were not overcrowded during our stay; we never had trouble getting chairs, and it was easy to get shade. (9) Breakfast buffet was great, and we also enjoyed the steakhouse. You do not need reservations for the steakhouse or other specialty restaurants; seating is first-come, first-serve. Another guest advised us to arrive 15-30 minutes early to ensure that we got a table. We arrived at 6:00 pm (15 minutes before they start seating) and were the second group in line! I saw people walking up at 7:00 and being seated right away. So, if the resort is not crowded, you may not need to arrive early for the specialty restaurants. (10) We enjoyed the coffee shop and bar in the lobby in the afternoons/evenings and never had trouble getting a table. (11) The gym is easily accessible, air conditioned, and we never had trouble getting equipment. (12) Everyone seems to take US dollars. We used US currency for tips, as well as at the on-site store and at a cafe during our excursion. CONS: (1) While I enjoyed the pools, the reviews that talk about missing tiles are true. The pools could definitely use some repair, but it didn't bother me that much. The water temp was perfect and the poolside drinks were great! (2) There was definitely a mildew/musty smell in the room, as noted in other reviews. I didn't notice it so much in the afternoon/evenings, right after the room had been cleaned, but definitely smelled it in the mornings. (3) Some rooms are quite noisy. As I mentioned before, if you don't plan to stay up late, you do NOT want a room near the stage. (4) The lunch and dinner buffets are OK but a bit monotonous. (5) There are only 2 English speaking channels on the TV. Not that I was there to watch TV, but it would have been nice to have a few more options. (6) We had some ants in our room; they seemed to be attracted to the live flowers that the staff included with the towel sculpture. So, although it was a nice touch, the hotel may want to rethink this. Overall, we REALLY enjoyed our stay and highly recommend the Riu Palace! We did have the opportunity to walk around the Riu Guanacaste, next door, which was nice (I actually like the beachy decor/feel of the property better than the modern look of the Palace). However, some benefits to the Palace are: (1) You get access to the neighboring property, while they do not have access to the Palace; (2) the Palace is a slightly smaller, less crowded property; (3) the pools at the Palace appeared less crowded (with less kids); and (4) the lobby of the Palace is indoors and air conditioned. The lobby at the Riu Guanacaste is open-air, which is nice; however, Costa Rica is HOT! I appreciated the AC in the lobby during check-in and when enjoying the coffee shop and lobby bar!

Not the sophisticated resort it claims to be

Costa Rica is an amazing country and we really enjoyed all the trips we have taken out of the resort to see the country. Would definitely visit Costa Rica again. A brilliant ecotourism country with incredible nature. Now the hotel. Staying at the Riu Palace was our first time staying in a Riu hotel, and unfortunately will be our last. If you are looking for a luxurious and sophisticated hotel (as this hotel is promoted to be) you will be sorely disappointed as this is a standard party resort that caters to guests wanting to stay on resort and drink. If you wish to have a relaxing, upmarket experience when in the hotel this is not the resort for you. Pros: - Rooms are spacious and modern. Comfortable. Lots of drinks supplied every day in the mini bar. - A selection of restaurants for dinner so can change up what you eat regularly. The fusion restaurant and steak house were our favourites. - Some members of staff really go above and beyond. Super friendly and helpful. - The 'quiet' pool is nice and if you go early you often have the pool to yourself if you wish to swim laps - Lots of sunbeds. Never have to worry about not getting a bed. Cons: - Very loud. We are staying in a 'quiet' room. Even though this is the case you can still hear the shows at night and all the activities and music from the pools in the day. I think this would be the case for any rooms that face inwards at the hotel (but much worse if you stay on the side of the hotel by the theatre) - The barmen who walk around  by the pool consistently forgot to bring us our orders every day. We tried tipping extra hoping this would see us get served but we were still continuously ignored or forgotten about. Very frustrating. -Walls paper thin. Mix this with the fact that this really is a hotel for people who like to only stay on resort and drink means we were woken up almost every night by drunks shouting and making lots of noise in their rooms in the early hours of the morning. Also next door had a fight that lasted 5 hours and police had to be called. - 5* for facilities but the feel of a 3* hotel. Touted as the most sophisticated of all the Riu hotels. Very little luxury or sophistication at this resort. If you are looking to come to Costa Rica to enjoy the incredible nature and all the ecotourism it has to order I cannot recommend highly enough to do it. If you are looking for a hotel that will immerse you in this and Costa Rican culture and be a place to relax the Riu is not that. It is a resort that could be anywhere in the world and caters to party guests who don't leave the resort. So make sure this is the right fit for you. Unfortunately this was not the right fit for us and the resort really put a damper on our holiday.

Whole experience will have minstrels write songs!

Room with great view, clean, neat, comfortable and well maintained. Restaurants well opinionated, and service beyond a complaint. Personel attentive and extremely helpful..... very friendly..... we were visiting their home, so to speak. can single out at least three employees who should either be in line for either a raise or promotion......GINA MORA in the restaurant..... FELIPE who serves the bestest café latte, and FARAMAR who also made the trip and visit such a treat!

Great Resort, Excellent People

As always, an appreciative thank you to all the previous trip advisor reviewers who helped my wife and I pick this fine establishment and a special thank you to the Costa Rican people who we came into contact with; the smiling and friendly workers and the many beautiful local families on holiday during our 6 day stay with your well behaved children. Pura Vida indeed! I agree with all the positive reviews and will only add a few helpful suggestions. First, bring a good pair of water shoes, the property is vast, especially if you visit and eat (breakfast and lunch only) at the Riu next door. The ground gets hot, especially the black sand beach which has the consistency of mud and dirt but the water is very clear when the wind is not blowing-plenty of fish and diving pelicans!. Second, since the Riu caters to an international clientele, the buffets have lots of variety and their are bound to be some "misses" along with the many hits so try to eat dinner at Krystal, Tokio (correct spelling), and Papaguyos-especially the lunch buffet but also the dinner. My wife was disappointed by the Lobster (too soft, chewy, little meat-the lady next to us ordered another one for these reasons-still disappointed), but I gave her my shrimp Kabob and went to the dinner buffet at Arenal to make up for it-just get to all these specialty restaurants where you will dine in splendor with excellent food and service close to the stated opening times as you will wait otherwise. The lobby Italian restaurant L'Anfora was our diamond in the rough. Open from 12:30 to 10:30, you can order fresh made off the menu and also enjoy the buffet as well. One thing about all the buffets, the temperature of the hot items is never hot-we went first thing in the evening and morning-they make this stuff too far in advance and after awhile, everything gets cold and dry-I know that seems like a contradiction but it's true! For breakfast, stick with the fresh made omelets-just get your fillings first and hand it to one of the two cooks on each far end, skip the OJ they bring you and enjoy the variety of fresh made/squeezed juices, papaya, watermelon, celery and delicious banana-whatever is in season. Of course, if you live on the east coast or Europe and you are only coming to this place to eat and drink-go to the Riu in Ocho Rios in Jamaica-on a spectacular beach (but you will, unlike here, never get into a specialty restaurant-that is why we LOVED the no reservation policy here). You will save hours of flying time. If you do come here, try some excursions even if you just go to the nature park next door. The staff and animal attractions, although limited, are excellent-everyone here loves their animals and is proud of their country and rightly so. Get you tickets in front of the hotel lobby bar ($ 41) and a shuttle comes every 30 minutes and will take you right over. If zip lining and walking over a pond with crocodiles is your thing, you can do it here at additional cost. The view from the visitors center looks directly down the beach over the two Rius-spectacular. Third, the hotel is on the dry side of the country and May was the very end of the dry season that lasts roughly from January to May, give or take a few weeks. We, fortunately, did not see a single drop of rain but everything was dry so understandably, while still beautiful, not lush like the pictures which are probably taken during or just after the rainy season. Fine, but be advised that to travel to anything like a rain forest, volcano, etc. is far away and it gets dark here usually around 6:00 year round. The hotel recommends a real great FULL DAY (7 to at least 7) tour to the Arenal Volcano with stops for lunch, rain forests, etc. for $ 150 PP which is probably worth it but was too much driving for us. Opt instead for a half day river cruise to Palo Verde Park ($100-7 to 2:30) or do what we did. Cesaer Adventure has an excursion "company" on the beach. Unofficial, yes but well regarded in trip advisor. He can customize anything for you. We opted to pay a little more for a private tour (guide and driver in a new van) that included what we wanted; a coffee tasting, waterfall stop-you can even swim if you like and a trip to a secondary crater of a closer Miravalles volcano which we found fascinating. We had a walk through of the bubbling mud and steam, sauna, mud bath and relaxing natural hot water "bath" plus an excellent authentic Costa Rican lunch-all to ourselves!. Perfect for us but you can pick what you like-we left at 7:30-back at 2:00 for a swim in the clear ocean. Remember, the volcanos tops are often covered in clouds, especially mid day. Lastly, to the left, about 100 yards off the beach, you can opt for cheaper souvenirs, massages, ATV tours but try to see something of this country which is the size of Florida. The white sand beach to the left is a minimum 1/2 hour walk each way, climbing over or swimming around rocks at some point-be sure to go at low tide and be sure to be back before dark as the way up from the beach is pitch black. Every night they had entertainment and wine tastings on this stunningly beautiful 5 year old property (next door 8 years old with more established landscaping) enjoy yourselves and don't be put off by the few negative reviews. This place bends over backwards for you if you have realistic expectations and just return the kindness and respect they pour out on you the minute you get off the plane at the airport and enter the lobby. Enjoy!
