Costa Rica is amazing, I understand the Riu chain gets a lot of hatred from people as they destroyed part of the rain forest but what we saw around the grounds made us feel the eco system is working well and the plants and animals have adapted to life with human input. The hotel is impressive when you drive up, nice to have a cool reception area as most other hotels we have been in are open meaning you can never escape the heat but this was good, we had booked taxi transfers from the airport meaning we arrived at the hotel before checking in time of 3pm, they were ready for us and booked us in & a porter took us to our room - this wasn't quite ready for us but we dropped our cases and went to the pool bar for a drink. After about half an hour we went back to our room and found it was ready. Huge bed we could both lie on the edge but not touch finger tips, loads of pillows and clean linen that was changed frequently. Fridge with drinks optics on the wall and tea coffee water facilities all provided. Bath in the middle of room - we didn't use this as the shower was so good-big walk in shower with shelving and both rain head and standard shower head available - plenty of hot water no matter what time of day you took a shower. Double basins and separate toilet cubicle. Towels seemed to be changed daily even if we hung them up to dry. Our room was a jungle view room and we watched for many an hour on a morning or early evening the monkeys playing in the trees, the fireflies buzzing about the dragon flies dancing around and the many sounds of the rain forests around. The cleaners attended the rooms every day and left us flowers and towel art daily, they start fairly early therefore if you have had a heavy night and don't want to be disturbed just leave your red do not disturb sign on your door and they will leave you alone. The communal facilities of the palace are all spotlessly clean and the staff work tirelessly to do this don't think we ever saw any rubbish around the hotel grounds. We hear that the restaurants are all very good we only ate in the Steak house once as we preferred the flexibility of the buffet, the steak house was fantastic the fillet beef cooked to perfection but we left feeling over full as all courses are delivered to your table rather than you choosing a little yourself.. We ate in the buffet restaurant every other evening and found the food to be just what we needed, I agree its not always piping hot but when catering for such large numbers this would be hard to resolve - perhaps a microwave or two around so you could heat it up if needed? Lots of choice lots of variety and again super clean. Lunch was either taken from the daily BBQ they have or from the steak house restaurant that becomes another buffet during the day - both equally as good although we preferred the meat BBQ to the taco/tortilla BBQ they sometimes had. Bar service was all good both during the day and evenings. attendants getting drinks for you round the pool and in the bars/while watching the shows, Herbertio in the lobby bar was a true gent, often having another round of drinks ready for us without us even realising we needed them. Others talk of the issue with large groups of people playing their own music in the bars we only experienced this twice and it was annoying to hear various songs going off in different areas of the bars we think management should perhaps play music in the bars and not allow others to play theirs, there was on day when a large family descended on the pool area made a lot of noise and disturbed the whole pool area, I know you are on vacation but so were we your rowdiness was not welcome at all - the poor waiters around the pool were run ragged fetching drinks for you all I only hop[e you tipped them massively! Entertainments started each day at 10am with various activities throughout the day, it would be nice to see a few changes to the timetable maybe introduce archery/ boules & other games into the timetable as ping pong darts/crazy golf every day gets a bit tedious. Evening shows on the whole are good, the diversity show was amazing, the grease one was good the lion king part of one of the shows should have a show all of its own, you have the props am sure it would be a hit. Perhaps more audience participation shows would be good always a laugh when people you have made friends with make fools of themselves on the stage - in good taste obviously. The entertainment staff are fantastic though all very friendly and we were disappointed when our taxi transfer picked us up early meaning we didn't have time to say goodbye to them all. Am sure we will meet you again one day! We spent all our time around the pools, the first day we were near the pool bar but very quickly moved on from there when we witnessed a lot of people staying in there all day drinking to oblivion but leaving the pool rarely - gross! The beach is dark sand we are on a volcanic island its to be expected, it is narrow but you can walk quite a distance and look at all the amazing wildlife around you. There was a red tide while we were there meaning red flags most days and to be honest the sea did not look that inviting especially when we saw lots of dead fish washed up on the beach possibly caused by the red tide?? The eco system in costa Rica is amazing though where as most hotels would be cleaning up these fish here they were left to let nature do its best and so the circle of life will continue. One of my most favourite things to do was go to see the monkeys who visited close to the beach ( not every day they are wild this is on their terms) - this is one thing about Costa Rica I will treasure forever, having a capuchin monkey hold onto my fingers while take a piece of fruit is priceless and words can not describe how this made me feel. Often a spider monkey called Cecilia will hang out with them, she was certainly boss and they kept a close eye on what she was up to, don't feel sorry for her though as we were told she was cast out of her own troop for getting a little over familiar with the alpha male when it was not her place to do so!!! We also saw the howler monkeys but they stayed up high in the trees - told by a local this is because if they come down the boa constrictors like them for lunch ....thanks for that, made a hasty retreat out of that area ;-) We made some lovely friends on holiday and had a lot of laughs, one thing I did like was as at the moment the only flight is from Gatwick this means no sad goodbyes to the people you have met on other days as we all arrived and left at the same times. I could go on and on but try it for yourself, go with an open mind , you are not going to get the beautiful beaches of ocean of the Caribbean but you will get a little insight of what its like to like in the rain forest surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna. What a great hotel! The buildings and grounds are impressive and they are tastefully decorated! Our room was so spacious and luxurious, with a wonderful terrace with ocean view! The food was always extremely good and you can feed an entire army in there! But the best of all was the service, specially from the animation guys! Big kudos to you! Overall our experience was amazing, with have no complaints at all and we highly recommend the Riu Palace to anyone! Is totally worth it: relax, eat and enjoy like there's no tomorrow!

I read to reviews before booking and leading up to the trip. So I want to start with everyone has different expectations. A quiet trip to the Tuscany region of Italy with amazing food can't be compare to a large scale all inclusive. What is caviar to some could be bird dropping to others. What is incredible to me, might be low class to others. so with that... I will start with the worst. on two separate nights we ate in the Papygayo steak house. On the first night my daughter and I had slight symptoms of food poisoning but felt fine the next morning. I didn't feel the need to say anything. However, two nights later we all got food poisoning much worse. We wound up sleeping in the room most of the next day. Between the 3 of us we tried 5 different meals and there was no commonality between what we ate and getting sick. The manager was apologetic and offered us chicken soup. Besides the steak house, the food at the restaurants was just 'OK'. It was not up to my standards even for an all inclusive. It is sad to say the Arenal buffet was the best. On a positive, we never had a problem getting into them like so many on here mention. We enjoyed the 24 hour snack room and the cappuccino stand was nice but found the day time servers (two ladies) rude. It felt like your were a bother to them. Besides them everyone else was very nice. The rooms are a bit blah. They are clean and they do a good job on keeping them that way. There is a slight damp smell in them but nothing that bothered us. The rest of place is a nice. I actually preferred the style of the next door Riu but overall I can them decent grades for layout, cleanliness and design. The pools are nice and yes there are tiles missing from spots. Little details like this are the difference in my mind form shining and being just "OK". The entertainment at pools was amusing and we always found good seats. We never felt crowded. For the most part people were nice and polite. We booked jet ski's on the beach from the unaffiliated people. We had a great time. Everyone on the beach looking to sell you something are very polite and don't harass you. We booked our ATV through the hotel and two of site excursion with GetLostInCostaRica (highly recommend). The nightly shows ranged from aweful to fun and were more of a time filler. I wish there was more to do at night. We felt the need to have pool tables, more ping pong tables (we found one), etc. Even some fun board games. Drinks were tasty in a sugary way but always lacked any alcohol amount that mattered. I doubt I would go back as I found the Westin all inclusive could be booked for similar amount or even the non all inclusive JW marrtiot. Enjoy your stay. not as bad as some make it out yet not up to my standards.

Very nice isolated resort, very clean rooms, very nice helpful staff from in to out. We had great time, enjoyed the variety of delicious food in the two buffets, the specialty restaurants were not as good. My youngest daughter, 19, got what she thought, food poisoning at the last night Aug. 4, we all had dinner together in the buffet, maybe she ate something we did not eat from it, not sure, plus she has sensitive stomach , hopefully no one else got sick.

Absolutely Amazing!

If you are looking for a relaxing getaway RIU is definitely the place to be. The resort is beyond beautiful. The rooms are big and clean. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. The food was good, and the drinks even better, so many options and choices. Definitely a must see!
