My husbands 42nd Birthday

Arrival via ILT company William driver was informative and super friendly. Andy took us to eat at a small hut and to the airport in a timely manner. Arenal for breakfast - Christina was awesome took pics for my husband and I. She refilled mimosas which were delicious n crisp. She was our waitress everyday and I couldn’t have had it any other way. Exceptional service, thank you Christina! The Steak house Papagayo on Friday was great! Delicious steak however small portions, make sure u ask for a double- my husband is a meat lover! Sunday night disappointed BC lack of accommodation- short staffed... we lucked out with steak and beef tenderloin at Arenal and great service again... Moreover Nicole the waitress by the pool was very nice and tried hard in keeping drinks coming. I recommend at least 20 staff members by pool due to large property. The pool staff was entertaining. I liked the music selection, it was cool. Water aerobics was fun and a great workout. Also the show they put on Sunday night was great. Micheal Jackson and Miley Cyrus were super! Yo add, the room was nice - room 3043 was decorated for my husbands birthday upon arrival. The details involved made it all special along with a cleaned tidy room daily. Check in was a breeze. No long lines! We were both greeted with a cocktail. The 24hour snack bar is good for late night snacking and also for sport updates as my husband needs score updates. Sighs. Coco Beach is beautiful. $15 pp gets u there n back! Lots of shops and food. The Fish Spa is highly recommend! It’s friendly and safe. Everyone is pleasant, what’s more they aren’t pushy with making tourists purchase. Monkey Bar is a short walk on the beach, bring a banana to feed monkeys. Overall Costa Rica is absolutely gorgeous. The grounds are manicured and very clean. What more can one ask for, book Costa Rica Rui Palace!

Ridiculous restaurant system .....

Tue Jan 16 12:57:50 EST 2018
Tried a RIU resort for the first time and to be honest probably the last. The reason for this, as many other reviews have stated, is the lack of any reservation system for the speciality restaurants. I had read about this from other reviews before we came away but thought it wouldn’t be as bad as was stated ..... well it is !!!! 1. Krystal and Tokio - open at 6pm but you have to queue outside from before 6pm if you want a table. 2. They will not allow you to reserve a table for a later time 3. Once the restaurant is full for the ‘first sitting’ they take your room number and hand you a buzzer. To even get to this point you may have had to wait up to 30 minutes ! And they do wait for every seat to be taken before they give you a buzzer ! 4. If you get a buzzer you still can’t specify a time that you want to eat - you simply have to turn up when they buzz you. 5. Krystal and Tokyo close at 8.15 !! One evening we were told the restaurant was closed at 7.30 ! 6. Every evening there were people complaining about the system. From previous reviews I understand it used to be a reservation systems for hotel paperwork ( see below) would back this up. 7. Steakhouse - bigger restaurant and on the two occasions we ate there we managed to get one of the last tables by getting there for around 7:15pm. They have a seating area where they sit you whilst you wait. One of the times we waited half an hour. Open until 8:15pm. 8. Italian - open all day and until 10pm. We never had a problem getting into this restaurant. We do not go away on holiday to rush if an evening , stand in a queue or eat dinner at 6pm - as this was the only way to get a table we found ourselves queuing ..... the system at the RIU is utter madness and really spoilt our holiday. As we were having buffet for breakfast and lunch we made a conscious decision not to have buffet for dinner. The food at the specialities is really good which is why it is really frustrating the system does not support a more civilised approach to booking. Luckily we really liked the Italian menu ( granted that starter is from the buffet but it’s good) and therefore as it meant we didn’t have to rush and we could eat at a more civilised time of 8/8.30pm we found ourselves eating there a number of times. I do appreciate that some people like to eat early ..... however a reservation system would cater for for all guests. Moving away from the frustrating restaurant subject .... Overall the resort is ok - it’s certainly not 5 star but is very clean and staff are very helpful and friendly. Paperwork at the hotel is out of date - the map and info given upon check ( and info in the rooms)in still details the reservation system and the menu in the Italian still lists desserts on the a la carte menu when in fact they are out in the restaurant. I questioned this and was told the menu was a few years old and hadn’t been changed ?!?! Whether that’s correct not it was out of date and for a ‘five star’ hotel not to have up to date papers/menus is not acceptable and just demonstrates complacency and lack of regard to paying customers. The pool area is very clean and we saw it being thoroughly cleaned each day. There was however a broken ‘floor board’ near the area we sat in that remained broken for the duration of our stay. Again a simple thing that should have been fixed as it was a safety issue. Due to how close together the 5 pools are there really isn’t a quiet pool - although if you are able you can zone some of the noise out. The pool bar and activities are right in the middle of all the pools hence why it’s always noisy. A number of other reviews have commented on the distance of the toilets to the pool area - personally I didn’t think they was an issue as they are quite close but would definitely agree that some people in the pool bar didn’t seem to move all day ! To share a positive - we had a great waiter by the pool , Alonso, who would bring our drinks without us even asking ! Entertainment - we didn’t watch many shows , only comment would be that the entertainment area at the hotel next door is far better. We have stayed at Sandals resorts and they have a sensible and civilised restaurant booking system - this is important when you are away on holiday and want to relax. Back to Sandals next time......or anywhere that has a restaurant reservation system ! I note RIUs silence to any of the comments made regarding the reservation system ......a comment would be helpful so future guests can understand the rationale for such a ridiculous system !

My husband and I recently stayed five nights at the Riu Palace in Costa Rica and I can honestly say it was "perfect) and I wouldn't change a thing. We have traveled to many Carribean Islands, Canada, the US and without a doubt, the Riu Palace is the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. First, the rooms are top notch! Large, spacious beds, clean, walk-in shower, mini-bar with everything included free, balconies with awesome views and a great system of saving energy by using your room card to turn off unnecessary power uses when you are out of the room. Second, the food, WOW! All you can drink and eat with AAA service! Quality drinks were available all day and evening, quality food at fine restaurants made dining at the hotel a special night every night! We had four and five course meals at the steak restaurant, the italian restaurant, the Japanese restaurant and a Fushion seafood restaurant! The breakfast buffet was out of this world with Mimosas served upon request. I cannot think of a breakfast food that was not available....they had everything! No reservations and never had to wait in line! Service was excellent and no tips were expected. Third, the hotel and grounds were immaculate and made you feel like you were staying in a real "palace". The beautiful large beach had large native trees where you could choose to lay in the shade or in the sun. As soon as we walked to the beach, an attendent would be there to assist us in getting a lounge chair wherever we wanted it. We had actually planned on taking tours daily and instead took one tour and enjoyed the hotel the rest of our stay. Thank you, Riu Palace for making our Costa Rica trip so special and such a memorable experience.

Best time ever!

Wonderful views, helpful staff, yummy food. I forgot water shoes and was able to get some that a previous guest left behind at the hotel. Bring sunblock as it will cost a fortune (more than $40 a can).? Excursions are so fun. The sunset helicopter ride is beautiful and worth the price.

We stayed 8 days with our 2 adult kids. Although we did not spend much time in our rooms the accommodations were perfect for us. We had two rooms, that were sort-of adjoining style, one room with over sized king bed and one room with two full beds for the kids and view of the beautiful grounds. Staff was friendly, helpful and never hard to find if you needed something. I am not normally a buffet person, but in this case we enjoyed the buffet for most of our meals. Everyone could get something they wanted and at dinner they would bring you drinks if you asked for them! We would also recommend the fusion place and the lunch at the pool was amazing! Never a lack of entertainment available but you can also find areas to escape to that are not quite as active. We also took advantage of the paddle boards, and kayaks at the beach that are included! Just go down the the beach and sign them out! Great Fun! Oh and we did see (and hear) howler monkeys on the beach! We ventured outside the hotel on most days so we did not have time to get tired of anything. The only negative thing we could find was the beds are not so comfortable.
