Very Disappointed

Wow...Have been here twice and am here right now and I have to say that now the Palace since reopening in January 2017 all it is now is a glorified Santa Fea which is the sister hotel next door that you have access to anyways if you stay at the Palace. This place has changed a lot layout wise but the worst part is now the food which was the big difference between staying here at the Palace and staying at the Santa Fea. Good Bye Riu Palace of old and Good Bye the new Riu Palace time to find a new place to hang for 7 days in Cabo!!The service has gone by the wayside and is really noticeable in every aspect of this resort. Too bad because it used to be really top notch . Oh well time to go somewhere new!!!

Visited the Riu Palace 2 years ago in April with family for 7 days and loved every minute of it. Decided to go back and spend 10 days hoping it was still the same. 3 Couples and on 2nd day we all came down with an intestinal bug that kept us living in the bathrooms for 3 days. It was awful. Bartender told us that a lot of people were complaining about stomach issues. Don't know if it was from the food or the kids pool but we moved rooms on the 3rd day only to realize that the hotel was remodeled and the entertainment stage was facing our sets of rooms. We were not prepared for being kept awake during the stage shows. The hotel was very clean but I remember the buffet was much better the last time we were here. Will think about going to another resort when we visit Cabo as our expectations were not met.

Beautiful hotel

We traveled in April on a Sunwing flight out of Edmonton. The flight was direct and it all went smoothly. There was the usual 'upgrade sales' on the flight but nothing we weren't prepared for. If you're staying at this hotel I wouldn't worry about the private transfer. There were enough guests to fill 3 buses so they drove directly to the hotel and did not stop anywhere else. I will preface this review by stating I am not big on all inclusive hotels and this type of travel but it was a girls trip and the price was right ($1,500). Airport - don't worry about lining up for money. The Riu has a bank machine and the front counter is happy to exchange money. There is also a mall across the highway you can easily get to with a bank machine. Vendors and hotel staff are happy to accept tips in USD so bring small bills with you and all is good. There is a kiosk outside where the buses line up selling beer, water, and other drinks you might want. Price is reasonable and they accept pesos and USD. Check In at the hotel was actually very quick given the size of the line (and they give you a delicious welcome drink). All front desk staff were very friendly. Our room wasn't ready so we got changed in the Courtesy room which has showers and change room for guests. The luggage check in was a little hectic though. That could certainly be improved. Odd note: you only get one room key. I'm sure you can ask for more, we didn't though. Lobby bar is very nice with adequate seating for all guests. It was never full when we went. We did find service was faster ordering drinks from the bar directly. Drinks are very good with a decent selection of liquors. We usually sat at the pool bar on the quiet side of the hotel. If you're in the hotel facing the beach the quiet pool is on your right, 'party' pool to your left. Service was very good every day at our loungers and in the pool bar. There is enough shade available if you want that (there are NO umbrellas or cabanas for shade on the beach which is odd for a resort of this size and quality). The pools and entire hotel are very clean. Everywhere you look staff are cleaning floors, railings, stairs, etc. I was quite impressed. Buffet was clean and food was usually fresh. I like that you could see them cooking the dishes right in front of you. It is repetitive though but a great selection. At one point the chef was actually carving proscuitto right off the hock in front of me so you knew it was FRESH! I would also eat breakfast in the 24 Lounge (by reception) as they had the best coffee in that room (grinds the espresso beans right in front of you). If you have diet restrictions there are some options for you (vegetarian section) but if it's serious I'm not certain how great the buffet is for you. We ate at the Japanese restaurant (amazing!!); the mexican (San Jose i believe) also very good, and the fancy one - i can't remember the name but it was delicious (small portion sizes though). It was all very good quality food with great selection. Service at the San Jose could be improved but that is my only complaint. Our room was very nice and quiet facing the gardens, ground floor and the doors locked just fine. Every room has a nice sized patio with two chairs and a table. Fridge was stocked with pepsi; 7up; soda water, beer and bottled water. Each room also has 4 bottles of liquor for mixes. The room was very clean with a large bathroom (shower is also a very good size). We had two sinks and more than enough towels. For the pool towels we would just exchange for a clean towel at the end of the day (if needed) and on the last day we asked for the towel card back. No sense walking over there every day when you just need a clean towel. One down side we noticed was for the private swim out rooms on our side of the hotel (quiet side on the right hand if you're facing the beach). As the sun sets behind the hotel these rooms were shaded quite early. It cools down a fair amount at night so I'm not sure how much use you would get out of these pools unless you are an early riser. They were shaded by about 2pm every day. The other option is a swim out pool on the party side of the hotel. They would get sun til it sets around 6:30 or later. Vendors on the beach weren't pushy. They just set up on the beach and wait there all day. The hotel also has a gym and water sports - i didn't use these so i can't comment on the quality. I also did not go into the marina or the San Jose del Cabo art market on Thursday but I've heard it's a must see. If you are an ocean lover like myself this is not a beach you can easily swim in. At one point i had to rescue a nice gentleman out for a stroll on the beach after the undertow pulled him off balance. Be very careful if you choose to go in the water. Overall i would definitely consider staying here again (if I wanted an all inclusive experience).

The resort is very clean. The staff was very friendly. The food is average, but we are very picky (don't normally go to all-inclusives). The beach and pools are beautiful, but you can't swim at the beach because it is too dangerous. The sand is very rough, so walks along the beach are difficult (not soft like Florida or Hawaii). We had an oceanfront jr suite which was 1 king bed and a twin size pull out couch. The room was very small, but very nice. The gym was small and very busy each morning so sometimes had to wait. We were there with several other families which made it more fun.

This is a very large hotel compared to what I am use to. Sadly lots of stairs and very few elevators. This hotel is 4 levels. We were on 4 th. level. Food in buffets was sort of unbelievable! They had an unbelievable variety -- you could eat at buffet everyday and not have same thing twice. They had 5 specialty restaurants . We tried all of them in the 2 weeks we were there. They were not bad-- but menu selection is very limited. With 2 pools you can be on quiet side or loud side. Lots of bars. Very good variety of booze. Pretty much any thing you want. View was fantastic. Beach is hard to walk on -- sand is course-- take water shoes. Water was ruff. So stay out of it. Pool water was warm except when they add more. Resort is great -- BIG-- took me 2 days to find my way all around. Resort doesn't give you much info. on arrival. The map is hard to read. But staff is very helpful and will direct you to where you need to be. Of all the people there the one that sticks out most is-- THOMAS ! He is -- I guess you would call him head usher at buffet. First day he introduced him self and asked my name. From then on he went out of his way to talk to me. No matter where we run into each other. If you are thinking of going there take lots of sunscreen. It is HOT there. Buss ride from airport to hotel is long and boring. So make sure you get a couple of beers outside of airport to drink on buss- oh don't forget to use washroom in airport--ride on buss is about an hour.. Fantastic place to go!!
