RIU palace experience

Apr 14 2019
I recently stayed for 6 days and this is my second time at a RIU hotel. I stayed at the RIU in Costa Rica and it was amazing. Unfortunately I now know not all the same. The buffet here was terrible with few choices, poorly cooked and obvious frozen to table with almost everything. Service was not even remotely good as most employees seemed bothered by you. The waiters serving by the pool were the best. They also could never get the frozen drinks to Bevfrozen. The hotel was beautiful and very clean. The beach and water was the top when comparing to the other islands. The pool was always freezing so not very many people in it at once. The RIU in Costa Rica had amazing buffets, BBQs everyday for lunch by the pool, chocolate displays and sculptures, diverse dishes and desserts and not the same thing everyday. Not sure how they could be so different. I would not recommend this hotel and will not stay at a RIU again. I would recommend Aruba but know that this island is extremely windy all the time.

I would like to see bar service on the beach and also doing lunch on the beach so people dont have to worry about wearing their bathing suits in the restaurants. Also appreciated the gluten free options at breakfast but really need to add som gf desserts at the restaurants, like creme brle or flourless chocolate cake!

we had to get up very early to RESERVE a our palapas and chairs. there has to be a better system! And I think they should have reservations for the restaurants rather than have to stand around and wait 1 - 1 1/2 hrs for a table. over all things were great.

We loved staying at the Riu Palace. It was very clean and comfortable. The only complaint we had was that the beds were hard, but usually we were so tired it didn't affect our sleep. The nightly entertainment was great, especially the Mr. Riu show! I wish that they had the entertainment information posted somewhere so you knew what time and what show was going to happen. We missed majority of the show on our last night in Aruba, which was disappointing because it was the acrobatic show. From what we saw of it at the end it would have been amazing to see the whole show. The beach and pool area are very clean. If you want one of the huts on the beach you need to get up early and put your stuff out on it to save it. We never had a problem getting one though. We aren't very big drinkers but what drinks we had they were good, they put enough alcohol in them but not too much. The food was good, lots of variety at the buffet. Each night they had a different theme for dinner. The other restaurants were ok, a little confusing how they worked. This was our first time at an all inclusive resort and they didn't really explain how things worked in the restaurants, they just assumed everyone knew. We ended up mostly eating in the buffet restaurant. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider going back.

I was very disappointed in the fact there was mold in our room. When I asked to change ,as I have asthma, was told no other rooms available. I took pics if you would like. 2nd, the DePalma rep for Apple knew nothing about the extrasame we were suppose to recv. L I keep some type of credit?would still like to know about this. Also, we were suppose to be able to eat at riu AND Riu Palce. Riu would only let us try buffet, n I think restaurants. theservice and the food , the beach and rest of the ho

My husband and I went here for our five-year anniversary and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed everything about our stay, but the staff and the location were by far the highlights. We had beautiful views and enjoyed the clean beach. I'm not normally the type to go to an all-inclusive, but Romance Travel Group recommended the Riu Palace and I took a chance - thankfully so! They have a great variety of restaurants and cuisines and I would rate everything we had as good or better. We spent a lot of our time on the beach or our balcony, but there is a lot to do at the resort and within a short distance of it, so anyone who enjoys being on the go will be very happy here. We were originally planning on taking anniversary trips every five years, but after this one, I think we'll be going back every year!

Before we ever entered the lobby i just knew this was going to be something special. This hotel is impressive even from the exterior. It just stands out. We spent 11 glorious days and nights at the Riu at the beginning of April. We were accomodated in Block C , 7th floor overlooking the pool and the beach / ocean, Stunning. Our room was lovely ,generous size bed, double basins walk in shower, plenty of storage air con, safe toiletries, coffee maker and an amazing minibar. The room actually had its own drinks dispensers and they were stocked with top quality brands eg. smirnoff vodka, Barcadi rum etc. I have stayed in many other 4 and 5 star properties but i had never seen this facility. Housekeeping was excellent.. Towels were changed twice a day , fridge was replenished twice a day, turn down service. This really was luxury. The staff all over the complex were brilliant, they wanted to do everything for you. There are a number of speciality restaurant at the Riu, Japanese, Italian, Fusion and a steakhouse as well as the buffet. I have to admit we did not try any of the speciality as the buffet was amazingly good. Also there was a different theme in the buffet each night eg. Mexican, Italian, Japanese as well as a huge selection of other dishes. Considering the number of people using this dining room its amazing how smoothly it runs. Never had to wait for a table and they are cleared immediatelyand the staff were very attentive. We celebrated our wedding Anniversary at the Riu and one of the customer relations managers arranged for a bottle of bubbly and some chocolate covered strawberries to be sent to our room. This i thought was very sweet and much appreciated, Thank you Sandra and all the Riu team. The entertainment team here work very hard. There are activities around the pool all day for all ages and there is a different show every night at Barrys bar. I never did find out why it was called Barrys ( thats my surname and it is an Irish name ?????) The beach is gorgeous but gosh you need to be up by 6am if you want a shelter. Crazy. There are plenty of loungers and you will always find shade under a tree if necessary. Be warned though, with the constant breeze you will not be aware that you are getting sun burned . I had done my research and i knew all about the breeze but i was still surprised at it. It is constant, no let up at all. Be sure to bring some pegs to attach your towel to your lounger. The complex is so beautiful you will be tempted to just stay there but dont. Get out and about. If you walk out the front door of the hotel and turn left you are near a large variety of shops, restaurants and casinos. If you turn right you can get the local bus into Oranjestad $2 each. worth a walk around especially if you are into jewellery. Thank you Riu Palace for everything and for making this holiday so memorable. You have really set the bar high

We stayed here in the beginning of April on the 10th floor in the main building. We had two suite rooms which we absolutely love and it works great for large families. The two rooms are completely separate but have a shaded hallway. The view is breathtaking. Location. Conveniently located to all the restaurants and shops no need for taxi or rental everything is within 3-5 min walking. Hotel. Very nice but some rooms might be a bit dated. 2 Elevator for a large building is a stretch especially during busy times. Smoking. Is everywhere and you go can’t get away from it. The ventilation must be very poor at this hotel. The lobby stinks. Outside all you smell is cigarettes. I wish they had smoking areas and non smoking. Obviously we don’t smoke and I like for us and our kids to breath fresh Caribbean air not smoke. One night we had to leave the show because it was so bad. This is mainly why I gave 3 stars. We travel a lot and it was never this bad. Food. We ate mainly at the buffet and were always able to find something that pleased us and we are a picky bunch. Loved the theme nights. Loved seeing management there and eating what we are eating. My only complain is that food was not always hot. I wish you could get mixed drinks there, but I got use to getting them before or after. Steakhouse we tried once and were not impressed you basically get the same stuff as buffet but it’s served. Lunch we ate mostly at the beach buffet the bbq chicken was our favorite. The coffee place/bar in the lobby was the best. Service. Excellent. From the restaurants, bars to pool attendants no complains. Everyone was pleasant, happy and willing to help. Maid service was excellent as well never had to ask more than once. I know someone mentioned about room not being done. You have to use the door sign to make up the room or not to and they will accommodate. Pool. Busy, windy as hell and no separation for little ones. Guests big and small are not very considerate with their drinks so you have cups and straws swimming in the pool and from time to time you will notice some spilled drinks there as well. Beach. Beautiful, nice comfortable lounges, and very few palapas. So in order for you to get the palapa you literally have to get up at 5:30 to go reserve one. They definitely need a better process, I am not on vacation to work. Also, you can rent umbrellas or visitors to the beach can rent them and then your beautiful view gets totally obstructed. Entertainment. Excellent. Great shows every night. Very talented staff. Spa. Tried it for regular manicure was very happy with it and the service but the price was a bit steep $32 at home is $14. Overall very happy with our stay and would consider staying here in the future but they need to improve the smoking situation.

THIS HOTEL NEEDS A TOTAL MAKEOVER!! AVOID

I would like to be clear and say Aruba is a great Island with always friendly people and I will continue to Visit. AVOID THE RIU PALACE ! Staff: Friendly and willing to accommodate. No issue Food: Decent if your not a snob its fine and about what you would expect. Facility: Here is where it gets BAD Its beat up and is in dire need of a makeover The ROOMS ARE GROSS THERE IS A SERIOUS MOLD ISSUE IN THE ROOMS ALL YOUR CLOTHES ETC WILL HAVE A TERRIBLE SMELL WITHIN 1 DAY. The moisture issue is awful The bed sheets are damp when you lay down and have the same terrible smell. All your clothing etc or anthing left in the room will be wet after 1 day. I believe the staff is aware but it is not their fault as employees they are just doing as they are told I am quite sure. We changed rooms after checkin because the smell was so bad we could imagine staying for any period of time. The lower floor rooms are worst. Higher you go its better but still very bad. Its very unhealthy what they are doing. Any families with children with any allergies or asthma etc will really suffer. It time to get it fixed its not fair for families staying in rooms that are clearly not suitable from a health perspective. Many people I traveled with had respitory issues and or cough after a couple days. The bathrooms have mold spores on the ceiling and mirror its disgusting. They have a serious mold problem. Flat out. I am only taking time to Write this because its true and people need to know. BOTTOM LINE : Aruba is great with great people and Its fun and sun every day Avoid the RIU PALACE UNTIL THEY ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. YOU WILL GET SICK STAYING THERE.

Pluses and minuses
Scottatus, Morris County, New Jersey

Plus: 1. Friendly and efficient staff 2. Easy access to a great beach - with good snorkeling near rocky outcropping close to hotel. 3. Ample room on beach and poolside 4. Don Nichols buffet - it has almost everything that the “themed” restaurants offered. Minuses: 1. Dated room that could use better maintenance - broken drain plug, shower door not closing, and sloppy paint job. 2. Disappointing “themed” restaurants - Nautilus steaks were tough and leathery and Saruki Japanese had like 5 menu items, and none of them were good. We would have been better off to just hit Don Nicholas every night if we knew beforehand. Also, if you aren’t going to enforce dress code, then don’t bother printing it on the pamphlet. We got all dressed up for Krystal, only to see the table next to us with spaghetti tops and ripped jean shorts. I am not a dress up snob, but we felt like fools for actually following the hotel’s direction. 3. No food on poolside or beach. Latter I can understand, as it is very windy. 4. Lack of eating area to accommodate guests coming straight out of water. Instead, you must wait to dry yourself before stepping in restaurant. On top of not having poolside food service, this makes Riu less of a carefree dining experience than say Moon Palace in Cancun.
