Riu Palace Aruba was an amazing place. When we travel, we always travel Riu. The all inclusive experience is amazing. The beach in particular at this Riu was the most beautiful place we have ever seen!

My daughters and I stayed at this hotel on our recent trip to Aruba. This hotel met and exceeded all my expectations. We were fortunate to be upgraded to an ocean view junior suite and boy, did the view wow us every day of our visit. This is a great hotel to stay at with kids. They have activities every day by the pool and at night, the entertainment is terrific. We always were able to get a lounge chair by the pool, but if you wanted a palapa on the beach, you needed to get their early and stake your claim. They offer free water activities - kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and floats with ID. The food at the hotel was really good. From the buffet to the 4 on-site restaurants. We tried them all. The only issue with the on-site restaurants was that the food was not kid-friendly. So, I would recommend just doing the buffet. The staff on-site at the hotel were super friendly and spoke English very well. I had been at another Riu hotel in Cancun, but this one was far superior. Highly recommend, especially if you have children.

Prior to my trip,I encountered some really negative reviews regarding rooms smelling musty, fish being bad,and not to eat it. All I can say is this vacation was one of the best I've been on. I was impressed with the food. Everything was delicious, including the seafood, and I had no stomach issues eating at any of the restaurants. Either did my husband. Our room was gorgeous, and very large and comfortable. There was no musty odor in our room,as stated in a review on Trip Advisor. The bathroom was quite spacious, and clean. Only negative there was the need for a better hair dryer. The one on the wall had no power to it. I also would like to commend the person who thought to include magnifying mirrors for those of us who need one to put makeup on. I would like to suggest that a clock be put in the room,on the nightstand, so you could see what time of the day it is. Outside at pools and beach, there was reserving of chairs and tiki huts with towels, obviously done early in am, making it difficult to secure something shaded on beach or at the pool. Other than that, you'd be crazy not to try the RIU!

We've stayed at Riu's in Punta Cana, Mexico and now Aruba - they are all great, but the island of Aruba makes the difference in choosing it as our favorite.

Amazing is the word to describe this hotel. The staff always greeted you with a smile and made you feEl like you are the most important guest there. I am not a fan of buffets but let me say this the buffet was at least 10 stations and the food was served in small batches which meant it was always fresh. The buffet was better than the restaurants this does not mean that the restaurants were sub part because they were wonderful. The grounds were immaculate and the pool was enormous and clean. The beach was great and when you walked onto the beach there was a young man who would find you a spot and bring you a lounge chair. THEY say not to tip but these people were so fantastic I left many tips and they were extremely grateful. Bottom line don't miss out on going to the RIU Aruba. We will absolutely be going back and looking for a Riu in other travels

We have stayed at Riu Palaces many times in Playa del Carmen and know the chain's standards. We were disappointed in our stay at Riu Palace Aruba as the hotel didn't meet the expectations noted on Apple's website and based upon our experiences at other Riu Palace due to a fire that had occurred just prior to our arrival. The hotel was not fully operational when we arrived and we were disappointed that Apple had been informed and knew about the fire yet chose not to tell us in advance of our departure. We experienced power outages on an evening, not elevators were not operational for several days, some restaurants were closed. Apple should have thoroughly researched how the hotel had been impacted and discussed potential issues with us in advance to give us the option to go to another resort. We also found the on-site contact uninformed which we found hard to believe (Palma Tours). We've requested a partial reimbursement from Apple as we booked through Apple.

Great Buffet Food!

This hotel has beautiful views of the property and ocean from the ninth floor balcony!! The location is prime as far as I am considered. You could walk down 2 blocks to the Hard Rock Cafe or Soprano piano bar or my favorite little bar tucked in the back of the Hard Rock Cafe. Also if you go out the front entrance and down the hill, there are 3 benches where you can catch the smaller buses (which come more often, by the way) for $2 a person. They will take you downtown by the cruise ships and shopping areas. They will pull over anywhere you like along the way. We went to the Carnival parade, which was spectacular!! The Paddock was a nice place to hang out. Back at the resort the beaches were beautiful and clean. The steak house and Italian restaurant were both good. On a side note, be sure to pack Benadryl, Ibuprofen and any other over the counter medicines you need. There aren't any shops with those medicines real handy anywhere!! Our pharmacy trip for Benadryl cost us $50. $30 for a cab and $20 for the medicine. My husband broke out in a full body rash from one of the many seafoods he ate. The buffet was fantastic, I especially loved the breakfast. Don't forget to try the cheese Danishes, they are amazing!! The evening buffet had different themes for different days. We loved the Valentine buffet (complete with a chocolate fountain, red champagne, a rose and token ring)which was easier than trying to fight for a table somewhere else and just as yummy, I am sure of it. One piece of advise though, is to be aware the buffets are closed at 11:00 am. On the day of checkout, we realized this the hard way. We woke up later in the morning and packed everything up first and headed to have breakfast before our long flight, but everything was shut down by 11:00am until 1:00. ( when we had to be in our transport). We ended up having cold sandwiches and nachos from the sports bar which were good but we were sad not to have the buffet one more time. I did like that you do not need reservations for the fancier dining at the resort!! Other places I have stayed required a reservation. What a pain in the neck. This is the place for you, if you like to be spontaneous. In the evening we spent a lot of time at the bar on the dock which is down by the water but is not part of the all inclusive resort. You can get Captain Morgan there. 😀 Speaking of the liquor. I have never understood why all inclusive resorts only have certain top shelf brands. It's not that I am a liquor snob but those bottom shelf rums give me such a hangover. Charge me more and keep the good stuff in all the bars. ANYway.... Bar service here could really use some work. Even if you give good tips, it just doesn't affect them at all. They need to understand there is a big world out there, with whom they are competing with. I have had much better service with a smile elsewhere. On the other hand though, I will say the housekeeping staff were top notch!! Honest, polite and good at what they do. We left our safe open (by accident) with cash, credit cards, jewelry and cameras. Not one thing went missing and they locked it for us, left a note to call the front desk to get our new passcode. I am still impressed by that!! On a negative note, the beds were too firm for my liking. Also, they are just two beds pushed together to make a larger than king sized bed. You would fall through the crack if you tried to snuggle your partner. I missed my own bed at home, but at the same time it wasn't a horrible bed. My other suggestion is to take really good care of your towel card. I lost mine almost immediately. The form said you would have to pay $20 for a new card to get a pool towel. I never got a single pool towel, I just shared one towel per trip with my husband. I am not good at keeping track of keys. Why they don't have a system using your wristband is beyond me. Upon checkout, they charged me $20 for the lost card anyway. I guarantee they saved the $20 off of me drinking most of my beverages off campus. Seems like a low blow to me. Overall, I really enjoyed traveling to Aruba. It is safe and fun to explore the island. Go four wheeling with depalm tours, it's a blast!! There is something out there you will really enjoy. Go exploring!! Summing up my review, there are some really fantastic things about this place. There are some things that could easily make this place on the top of my list to visit with some easy fixes.

Not up to expectations

The room was very nice except for two steps down from the bed to the couch and the balcony. Room faced the ocean. Listed as all inclusive, which is correct as far as no additional charges. However, the menus at the restaurants were the same every day and you could only order one item. The pre-pieces were very small. The main course was the size fitting for a small child, not a hungry adult. The only place to get a sufficient amount of food was at the buffet, which was excellent especially for breakfast. However, they did run out of different fruit juices on a daily basis. The service throughout the resort was excellent. For those who are handicapped, it is a long walk from your room to the pool. Because of this, it is wise to breakfast in your bathing attire. It was difficult to adjust the temperature in the room, too high had a musty smell common in humid hotels. Too low was very cold. Could not find a happy medium.

One "Smokin" Vacation, BUT, not in a good way

Aruba is a very modern and progressive island in many ways. We have visited numerous times. Unfortunately one thing has not changed and that is their attitude towards smoking. This hotel caters to a lot of cigar smoking South Americans as well as numerous Americans and Canadians who love their Cuban cigars and cigarettes by the pool. As most people know, Aruba is a windy island, so trying to find a smoke free area around the pool is almost impossible with the swirling winds. Smoking is allowed in all outdoor areas and at the casino. Even inside the lobby area and near the cafe in the evening it is difficult to escape the aroma of smoke because of the proximity of the casino and the outdoor entertainment stage area near the cafe which also allows smoking. The exterior doors are often open and the smoke from the entertainment area wafts in. To get into the hotel restaurants and lobby you literally have to run the gauntlet of smokers just standing around or lounging on the corridor sofas outside before entering. It's not pleasant. You may be wondering why I gave this resort 4 stars. Although we hated the smoke, we cannot overlook the amenities and services provided by the hard working employees of the resort. Everyone we spoke to at this resort was pleasant and as helpful as could be, provided they spoke some English. Those who couldn't were still polite, but we had to ask elsewhere for an answer. This did not occur frequently. The beds in the room were firm, but not uncomfortable. Everyone has their own preference in this regard. Yes, the pillows are smaller, but again, they were numerous and not uncomfortable. After all, how big is your head? Push a couple of pillows together if you must. Our rooms were always cleaned well and we had soaps and shampoos when needed. The specialty restaurants served good, tasty food. Some dishes were more exotic than others, but we always found something good to eat. Service was a bit slower in the Italian restaurant, but there was an extensive salad/pasta/etc. bar to snack from while awaiting your meal. They did seem to be a bit challenged in cooking meat to the desired doneness. The restaurant managers were always more than willing to alter a meal somewhat to help certain individuals with food allergies, etc. The buffet always had lots of variety, but we did not eat there much in the evenings, except do drop in for dessert later on. Those people who complain about the lack of variety at breakfast are completely off base. I'd like to see what they eat for breakfast at home. There are hot and cold cereals, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, yogurts, hot and cold meats, all kinds of egg combinations, waffles, pancakes, coffee, hot chocolate, buns, pastries, breads, etc. They also have lactose free milk and gluten free breads and cereals. The cafe near the sports bar had specialty coffees, hot chocolate and pastries. The sports bar had hot dogs, sandwiches, fruit, popcorn and nachos 24 hours a day plus bar and hot drinks. You may find that the lobby bar mixes much stronger drinks than the pool bar does. The restaurant near the pool serves a buffet lunch which is just a smaller version of the larger main buffet lunch. Once a week they have an outdoor barbecue lunch. Regarding the pool tables in the sports bar: they have coin slots, but all you have to do is push the slider into the slot, without money, and you get the billiard balls. You have to sign out cues at the bar. There is no charge for playing pool, as some others have thought. The pool bar staff is very good about circulating among the guests asking if they would like any kind of special drink or water. Some people tipped for this service, but a lot did not. The entertainment staff is very energetic and friendly. A special shout out to Sandra, the customer relations manager. She was very helpful, pleasant and always willing to help if we had any questions or concerns. One other point is that his hotel is located at what is probably the windiest part of the beach, and that's pretty windy, especially around the pool. Some people did get up very early in the morning to reserve the palapas on the beach, but we were happy with the shady side of the pool, closer to the newer section. You didn't have to go down really early for these seats. By comparison, we found the Riu Palace in Costa Rica better on one main count. There is no smoking allowed on the property. What a pleasure that was. The rest of the resort was mostly the same. The entertainment staff in Costa Rica also put a little more effort into pool games for everyone. These are "formula" resorts and it works for the most part. Would I recommend this hotel? Depends on your budget (Aruba in general is not cheap), needs and tolerance of smoke. Smokers are everywhere, even on the beach. Although hotel management states that they conform to local laws regarding smoking, that doesn't mean that they can't create more restrictive smoking rules for their property. It would be so much better to move the smokers away from the outdoor corridors and the entertainment area. Also, having a “no smoking” pool area would be a great step in the right direction. Wake up people! Smoking is hazardous to your health. It's been proven. It's not “Fake News.”

Horrible service by the front desk staff. Horrible service by security on the grounds. Only person in the entire resort who was friendly was Robert at the swim up bar. They racially profiled our entire party and assumed we were not at the resort. We paid $130 per person for garbage service.
