Feb 2019 - 1st Trip to Aruba & Riu Palace Antillas

The Good: - personnel are friendly and do everything "they" can to make your stay the best. - the main areas are clean and well taken care of - the Casino: The slots were quiet! I don't have much experience playing tables but would recommend playing the tables vs the slots. The dealers were informative and they made my loses fun and the wins even better! Not a large casino but worth stopping in to play or learn. Free drinks if your staying at the RIU. - Buffet: food is good and they try to rotate with a different theme each night. I had 1 instance that I had concerns with a certain dish and its preparation so I informed the waiter who took my plate and immediately told the manager. The manager whom went directly to the chef at the station and they inspected the food. The food ended up being ok and it was reassuring to see that the manager followed up with it personally and urgently. Hats off to the gal running the omelet station in the mornings. Perfect every time! - Speciality reaturaunts were good with my favorite being the Italian. The bad is no reservations so you have to stand inline. The steak rest. serves steak and lobster but you can't get both! I had the lobster and it was great but would have liked to try the steak too. Left the steak house still feeling hungry. - the views from the rooms are good. I believe all have an somewhat of an ocean view. The lower the number the closer you are to the water i.e. 502 is closer than 522. Our first rm 722 looked down on a roof from the lwr level but still had a decent view of the ocean. Our 2nd room 1512 was closer to the water and looked down on the pool. Both views were good. The Bad: - rooms are outdated, can see and smell mold in both rooms (7th floor and 15th floor) - room on the 7th floor - moldy, no chairs or table on the balcony (they were removed to refinish them), well why have a balcony if you can't sit out there and enjoy it. And there was no mention of this when we checked in. There is a loud bang that sounds like someone is smacking a ring on the door that keeps you from getting any good sleep. Suppose to have 1 king bed and we ended up with 2 queens. After 2nd night we called and asked for another room and were told no rooms with king beds were available. On the 3rd or 4th day I went to the lobby and explained the mold and they quickly moved us to another room on the 15th floor with a king size bed and chairs on the balcony. The customer service rep was very responsive, accommodating and gave me the impression that he cared. - mini bar (in room) left note with $$, in each room, requesting stocking w more Diet Coke and water and no beer. The $tip$ was taken but we never recvd more Diet Coke or water. - in our 2nd room a pillow case had black streaks on both sides and the table runner they placed on the edge of the bed had mold on the bottom side so we placed them on the floor with a note and $$ explaining that these needed to be replaced or just remove them from the rm. when we returned the $tip$ was gone and the dirty pillow and table runner were placed back on the bed. - towels: make sure you lay them out on the floor so it's easy for the maid to count them each day. We thru them in a pile and when we returned we were short 1 towel and 1 wash cloth. Service desk explained that they are responsible for the count so if they missed counted we would be shorted. They did send someone up with additional towels. - new room on 15th floor: could see mold and had a musty smell but was better than the previous room on 7th floor. Shorted on towels again. The bathtub must have been relined, when you stepped in it it was very mushy and difficult to get your balance. If you stepped down quickly you could here the water between both layers. - pool closes at 6pm and the staff starts pulling all the loungers from the pool and beach area. - seating is limited and tight by the pool. Get there early to get decent loungers! - no food by the pool. There is a resturaunt close by but they have a sign up "no wet bathing suits" so if your spending a day at the pool or beach and drinking, prepare to be dry if you want a quick snack.

Excellent Vacation at Hotel Riu Palace Antillas

This resort is the best we have ever been at and that includes resorts in Mexico, DR, Cuba, and others including on cruise ships. After reading some of the previous reviews, I was wondering whether we had made a good choice but those who wrote negative reviews need to give their head a shake. FOOD was just awesome with excellent presentation in the a la carte restaurants. We went to the Steakhouse twice, the Italian, and the Krystal and were very pleased with each of them The buffet restaurants were also very good with an endless supply of varied items. I can't think of any breakfast item that was not available in the mornings including about 8 kinds of eggs. Lining up for reservations at the a la cartes was not a problem and is a better solution than holding reservations for people who never show up!!! ACCOMMODATIONS were quite comfortable, the beds and pillows were fine despite previous comments. We stayed on the top floor (18th) and had a balcony with a good view of the ocean. The rooms may be a little dated but it was clean and comfortable and the liquor/soft drink/beer supply was replenished every day. One minor issue in the room was addressed within an hour of bringing it to their attention POOLS & BEACHES are fantastic although, as anywhere in Aruba, they are windy. Beach chairs were brought down to us on the beach as soon as we arrived there each day. As in most resorts, ignorant people reserve pool chairs with their towels very early in the AM but the attendants would bring more out if we needed them. CHECK IN upon our arrival was quick and easy and our luggage was in our room within a half hour. The staff at this resort is very friendly and seems to enjoy working there. A special shout out to Alejandro at the reservation desk, Ana Lucia in the breakfast & lunch buffet restaurants, Paola at the towel booth, John in the Krystal Restaurant, and Mariam at the evening buffet. I apologize if the spellings are incorrect. We have already decided to return again next year and probably for several more years. I can not conceive of a better spot to spend a winter vacation.

The staff was very welcoming when we arrived. However, upon checking into our room, we did not get what we reserved. When I called down to the lobby, they informed me that the hotel was completely booked and what we actually reserved would be available in two days and they would give us an upgrade. I'm on vacation, so we said ok. The drain in the shower was plugged, the dial to adjust the shower head vs tub faucet was broken, so most of the water came out of the tub faucet. By the time a quick shower over, we were beyond ankle deep in dirty water. Another phone call was made. There was one day our room never received maid service, so when we were going to take evening showers, another call was made to get clean towels. The last two days of our stay, our balcony furniture disappeared so we could not sit on our balcony the last two days we were there. We never did receive an explanation for that? AND, we never received our room change/upgrade or our tub fixed. I am a member of RIU Class and they did not register our stay, as of last time I checked (yes, I provided the # at checkin). Not one of the RIU Class benefits did we receive. I am very disappointed in our stay, based on the great reviews this hotel has been given. We go somewhere every year for the last 15 or so years and this hotel is nowhere near the top on my list. Aruba itself is beautiful and the staff was very friendly though (even though things were not made right). The beach was great, but this is the first place that has not had some kind of beach service for drinks.
