GOOD HOTEL, GREAT WEATHER

Visited here 5-19th September.... Quick check in at Reception and were given a room in Block 1 which is the closest to the main Hotel. There are many different restaurants you can choose to eat in, we tried most of them and all good, we didn't however try the A La Carte. Its now on a First Come, First Served basis, so no longer have to book a reservation beforehand. Must mention one waiter, Akim in the main restaurant, who was very friendly and arranged a birthday cake for my partner who's birthday was during our stay. All the staff congregated and sang Happy Birthday, lovely touch I thought. This hotel was refurbished approximately 3 years ago and our room was clean and furniture in very good condition. In the main restaurant the food could have been warmer, it was never 'hot hot', that applies to each meal they serve there. Try the jerk bar on the beach, food there was really nice. One member of the bar staff (near the stage), ignored a few people when waiting to be served which I thought was very rude and in fact, I ended up going to the bar to get our drinks!!! There were a couple of people that were stung when in the sea as there are sea urchins in there, so most people were wearing their sea shoes. We didn't do any trips as we visited Ocho Rios last year and visited BM House and Dunns River Falls as closer to Ocho, and if you travel from Negril, you will be in the bus for a long time, approximately 3.5 hours each way so bear that in mind when booking your trip, you are the opposite side of the island to these places. We did visit Ricks Café, approximately 20 minutes drive from the hotel at $15 per person by taxi. Book the taxi from the area at the Hotel entrance, (near to the steps). We left the hotel at 4.30 and in my opinion timed it just right as it was very busy there with swimmers and day trippers on catamarans etc., The place empties pretty soon after the sun has set... Prices were cheaper in the bar downstairs than in restaurant upstairs !! So, on the whole, nice realxing holiday, there isnt too much to do in Negril. Majority of staff were very polite, but not the friendly 'RIU' greeting you get used to when booking their hotels each time you go away.

booked with first choice and got a good late booking deal for the riu club negril. flight good on the dreamliner from gatwick. the holiday reps met us at the airport in montego bay and we boarded the bus to take us to our hotel. for some reason we waited on the bus for nearly a hour before we got on our way. ours was the second hotel after the lady hamilton and the journey took 1.5 hours. we were dealt with efficiently at reception and were in our room unpacking 20 minutes later., we were in block 2 next to the adult pool which is about a 5 minute walk back to the main hotel and not a bad position for the beach bar. the room was large and the bed comfortable. there are two usb charging points on the wall and plenty of american style flat pin sockets in the room..on suite walk in shower and two wash basins with a soap dispenser.the built in hairdryer works well.also in the room. there are 4 optics with gin, vodka, brandy and appleton gold rum. underneath a fridge with beer mixers ,water and soft drink. there is a large ice bucket and you can get ice from the machine on the ground floor.. if you want a kettle then you have to hire it for twenty us dollars which you get back when returned to reception.so if you want tea or coffee in your room bring your own. after a few days our room had a bad smell coming from the shower cubicle and our cleaner dealt with it but it came back twice more and whatever she did only masked the smell. the gourmet restaurants are not gourmet as i know it and i will explain as follows.. there is no booking system so first come first serve from 6.30pm.. if you come say at 7.30pm you have to wait outside until a table is ready and then they will allow you in. we ate at the italian twice and it was ok. we ate at the steakhouse twice first time good second time the steak was nearly all gristle and fat which we sent back and the next wasnt much better. we ate at the chinese which was poor and the kuminar which was better. we were celebrating a birthday so ordered some sparkling wine at the table to be told we had to go to reception to buy it which i did the wine was warm and they did not have a ice bucket! so the restaurants were a disappointment. the lobby bar features paul the singing barman who sings between 8pm and 9pm while serving drinks and is very entertaining. the staff here gave good service and roun and vicky along with paul deserve praise. the main stage has entertainers and they work hard and we saw some good shows. the main buffet restaurant has plenty of choice and the jerk chicken shack on the beach open lunchtimes is worth a try. the sports bar stays open 24 hours but if you want food after 10pm then it is burgers from a vending machine which i think are the leftovers from the buffet. unfortunately as well the hotel closed the restaurants on certain nights and you were limited for choice of only two out of 4 most evenings. the beach is coarse sand and ok not great but then i come from the west country so im spoilt. i did snorkle and saw some fish and a sting ray but not a lot to see. the beach bar was ok but lots of wasps attracted by the booze were flying around probably 30 to 40 wasps and the staff were stung several times when i was there. the rooms are clean and the hotel is clean. the pool with the drinks bar was polluted by mid-day from a mixture of spilt drinks and poor toilet habits . i didnt use the pool with the waterfall and mainly used the adult pool near my block. most of the staff were friendly and gave good service and a small tip helps. everything is in us dollars but i did take some jamaican for tipping which you can break down the larger notes at reception. we went to margerritavile by taxi and on to ricks cafe. be warned drinks are not cheap. two small beers were $10 but they then add on 16.5 % tax so you pay $11.65. get the taxi from outside the hotel its about half the price of the hotel taxi. overall had i paid full price for this hotel i would have been really disappointed

7 Day Break

We arrived at this hotel on the 1st Oct and was given a very warm welcome by 1 of the staff with a cool glass of juice while waiting to be checked in. All the staff at this hotel complex made our holiday enjoyable as they couldnt do enough for us. This hotel has 5 different restaurants and the food was amazing with so many choices. This hotel caters for the disabled with a ramp for wheelchairs and disabled wc. We stayed in room 2109 and the room was cleaned by a housekeeper named Marlene and she made different types of animals from the towels which was placed on our bed. She is so passionate about her work and made sure that all the rooms were spotless. In the welcome bar there is a singing barman from 20.00 to 21.00 who starts singing while serving and he has been doing this for 47 years. It was the wifes birthday on the 2nd oct and this hotel sent a gift upto our room for her. When you go around this hotel comlex it doesnt matter which staff from the cleaners to the gift shop workers, bar staff, reception, dining room staff, maintenance staff, supervisors. They all make sure that we were happy and enjoying ourselfs. The beach was lovely ok there is vendors that might come upto you but all you need to say is no and they will leave you alone and they say ok and respect you. We will be coming back to this lovely friendly hotel. Well done to all the staff at the Club Hotel Riu Negril. 5 star Service 5 Star Food 5 Star Cleaniness. 10 Star Friendy And Welcoming

We had a warm welcome at reception and check-in was smooth. Room 2229 in block 2 was perfect for us, we also had a side sea view room which was lovely. This block is next to a quiet pool that has plenty of shade. The room was very good standard with a mini bar (refilled every 2 days) with optics (gin vodka and brandy). There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. This is not a major problem and there is always somewhere to grab a drink. The beach is beautiful with lots of sunbeds. Sure, there are beach vendors but if you don't want to buy anything, its no problem. It is a very clean beach. It's lovely to see that rubbish is cleared quickly (including plastic). There is a fish sanctuary at the end of the beach with lots of colourful fish. The snorkelling was great off the beach too. There are also lots of pelicans and herons to see. I would say that the all-inclusive is not fully 24hour. When we returned late after a trip out, the only food available was in the sports bar. There was a poor choice of unappealing microwavable food. We declined politely. The animation team try really hard to please. I particularly enjoyed the dance show one evening but apart from that the entertainment is average. I enjoyed Paul - the singing bar man (lobby bar around 9pm). The food was fantastic, there's so much choice. It would be difficult not to find something tasty to eat in the buffet and the speciality restaurants were also very good standard with exceptional service. I'm vegetarian and the food did not disappoint. The staff at this hotel are special kind of people. The best I have met at a Riu. The Wi-Fi is great at the hotel. All in all, we had a fantastic time at this hotel and would not hesitate to recommend.

My go-to spot

I have been to this Riu 4 times now and always have a great time. The check-in process is a bit slow, and they don't seem to care about special requests (shout out to Maxine in housekeeping; I would choose her every time), but they get you to your room eventually. The rooms are decent. Nothing to write home about but I never spend much time in the room. The minibar is only restocked every other day so plan accordingly. There is a safe in the room and I suggest you use it for your valuables. The food is really good for resort food. The buffet has a large selection and the wait staff are great. Most of them will grab your drinks or anything else you need (like a whole plate of mango when there is none left at the buffet). They deserve a tip so I suggest you bring cash. I'm not sure who cooks the bacon every morning, but I would come back to the Riu every time, just for the bacon. No one knows how to do crispy bacon like the Riu! Their jerk chicken hut is also fantastic (best if you go right when they open). They say they have 24 hour food, but I would suggest packing your own snacks as their sports bar food leaves much to be desired. Their bar staff can be hit or miss. You get some melancholy ones and some flamboyant ones. Leaving a tip makes them all happy and gets you even better service, so I suggest you bring some cash. Romeo and Ruen make the best drinks so make sure you find them if you're wanting something fancy. The beach is massive with lots of room to spread out so that you don't feel like you are sitting on top of each other. Depending on the time of year, and what the weather has been doing, the seaweed can be a bit much. The staff do the best they can to keep it looking great. If you're not impressed, a short walk down the beach will usually give you nice sand and clear water. 7 mile beach will be the white sand you are looking for (if you are comparing to Cuba) and that is a short ride down the road. The pools are nice with a decent amount of recliners. The main pool with the bar does get dirty by the afternoon so make sure you start drinking at 10am to enjoy the clean pool. They work hard to clean it every night, and have it sparkling again every morning. The entertainment crew are some of the most dedicated, hard working people that I have ever met. They go above and beyond to ensure that you are having the best time possible. Then, after keeping you entertained all day, they perform some absolutely mind-blowing shows at night. I really don’t know how this group does it, but these are the people who will make your week memorable. Shout out to Happy Feet, Burger, and Rolly Polly. They used to have a nightclub on the property which was so much fun. A few years ago though, they turned it into the sports bar and now the nights can be quite boring. They usually have a DJ on the main stage after the evening show, but if you’re looking for the nightlife, that happens a short distance down the road. All in all, the Riu is a great option when visiting Negril.
