my favorite resort ever

This was our 2nd time at this resort. The first time was in 2011. What can I say? We love the atmosphere. So relaxed. Kudos to Dorreth. The lady is a sweetheart. One of housekeepings finest. Romeo the bartender was awesome. Ask him to make you a Jamaican Baby shooter. Mmmmm. Trevor on the beach has the very best cigars I have ever smoked. I bought one every day. We will be returning with our whole family in December. Cant wait to go back and see all my friends there.

Excellent food but I've seen way better beaches! 19-26Jan2017

This was a resort I had heard a lot about so, when my friends gave me a huge travel voucher for my 50th birthday, I knew exactly where I wanted to go! FIRST IMPRESSIONS: the rooms were clean, check in was fantastic, nice and easy. There were no bugs! Ok, we saw some ants on the beach or in the grass, but there were no mosquitos or bugs in our room. It was great!! The trip from the airport in Montego Bay is a bit of a pain because it is about 1.5 hours away from the resort, but if you hire a driver instead of take the bus, you can beat the crowd and avoid having to stop at all the other resorts. There were 4 women travelling together and they did give us rooms in Building 1 as requested, but not side by side which I thought was a little funny. The way this resort is set up, we could have had adjoining rooms and that would have been great. We tried to change that after a day or so, but they told us they did not have availability. Which was fine, we were happy enough. FOOD: I am not kidding, I have never eaten this much on an all inclusive vacation. Every mouthful was amazing. They have 4 a la carte restaurants and I tried 3 out of 4 and they were so good! The steak restaurant was so delicious, the asian buffet was my favourite! My friends tried the Italian and said it wasn't very good, but I can't speak from personal experience. The buffet, both the lunch location and the dinner location, had one of the biggest selections I've ever seen! It was all really good. Staff: I have been to Cuba many times where the people are so friendly. I was expecting the same thing but, honestly, most of the staff didn't smile or speak to me as I was walking around. There were a few bartenders who stood out.........Dalton in the sports bar was the BEST!!! We spent an afternoon in there and he made us some amazing shots and sang to us and flashed that great smile! He honestly should be out in the lobby bar or the stage bar so more people can meet him because the sports bar is kind of tucked away in the corner beside the stage. It is the 24 hour bar and Dalton works 3pm to 11pm so, do yourself a favour and go visit him when you're there, tell him Dee said hello and tip him well!!!!! :-) We also met a wonderful waiter there who had only started about a week earlier, his name was Sean (or Shawn) and he was so friendly and chatty and had the best smile, we tipped him well and made sure we hugged him when we left. He is really good at his job and I hope he gets recognized by management!! PHOTOGRAPHERS: There is a studio/photography place on the resort, and the photographers are wandering around taking pictures. We met Adrian and Everett and they were so sweet and so fun, they really contributed to our vacation. We actually decided to have a photoshoot done on the beach at sunset and the price was really good. We ended up with a CD of all the pics to take home and print/share. Do yourself the favour and book a shoot. TIPPING/STAFF: I am used to going to Cuba where we know the people are in need and we go prepared with lots of gifts and we tip everyone well. I did not come prepared for this trip. For some reason, I thought Jamaicans were more well off however, I began to learn about their wages and their expenses and realized we should be looking after the staff EXACTLY the same as we would in Cuba. PLEASE TIP THE STAFF WELL!!! The depend on your generosity to make a living, most of them have 2 jobs to make ends meet and I had no idea. I didn't realize this until the end of my trip after speaking to some of the drivers/guides. I think the other thing that threw me off was that this resort cost me a lot more than Cuba and I didn't feel that I had extra money to throw around plus I thought, since the resort is raking in so much more money, they would look after their staff. I did some research online when I got home. The minimum wage is about $200/month in USD. The average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is over $300/month!!!!! A pair of shoes is $35 USD. Imagine paying a week's wages for a pair of shoes, a necessity wouldn't you say? Anyway, all that to say...........PLEASE TIP THE STAFF WELL!!! They work really hard, their wages are low and we know we are blessed enough to be able to travel!!! EXCURSIONS: Two of the girls on this trip with me had been here before so they had already been to Rick's Cafe and Dunn's River Falls and Margaritaville. So, we decided to do one excursion only (we mostly wanted to chill and not have a schedule). We hired a local (some of the staff that work there will drive you on their days off, or have a friend that you can hire - I'd much rather do that than hire a company who makes all the money) who drove us to Black River for a boat tour and to YS Falls for a few hours. It was amazing and a really great day! It has been recommended that we go to Mayfield Falls if we are ever back in Negril........it's closer and less "touristy"! And of course, you should have a local cook you a freshly caught lobster on the beach, just down from the resort...........or even hire one of them to take you out on their boat. If you meet "Captain Bob", who has a glass-bottom boat, tell him Dee from Canada says hi! SHOPPING/MONEY: Use USD although the local currency is Jamaican Dollars. $100 USD is about $13,000.00 JMD. There are a bunch of vendors on the beach beside the resort so, if you are looking for tourist souvenirs, you don't have to go very far. There are also a couple of stores right on the resort and a ton of shops in the airport in Montego Bay on your way home. I had heard that the vendors were really aggressive and I have to admit, I was a little nervous about that. Well, that is ridiculous! Everyone was beautiful and friendly and would leave me alone when I said no thank you. I met some amazing people and admire how hard they work in the sun all day, walking up and down the beach with a smile on their faces, trying to make a little extra money. Contrary to popular belief, and despite the fact that pot is sold out in the open, it is NOT legal to buy it or sell it. We were told by one of the drivers that people can grow up to 5 plants at their house and you can possess a small amount but that's it. Do your research. ISSUES/CONCERNS/THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: I like to have a 2nd towel, one to use for my shower and one for the beach. Most of the time, I can pay the $20 and get a 2nd towel and just turn both in when I leave. I was told I cannot do that here. That does not make any sense. I have enough money to go on a vacation like this at a 4-5 star resort, trust me, I do not want to steal your towels! My friends put their lounge chairs in the water at the beach, just enough to stay cool and enjoy themselves. The weren't in there 5 minutes when a lifeguard came and told them to take the chairs out of the water. When asked why, they could not give any reason. Later, my friend enquired at the front desk, which is where we were told to bring any concerns, and she was told it is because the salt water deteriorates the plastic chairs!!! Are you kidding me? Even if this is true, we pay a lot of money for these trips and should be able to put the chair wherever we want. I mean, how much do one of those chairs cost to buy when they buy them in HUGE BULK. I have put my chair in the water at all the other resorts I have been to and have never been told not to do it. We brought small floaties to use in the pool and were told we couldn't use any of them! I can understand it might be a safety issue but truthfully, I didn't notice a lifeguard who was taking his job seriously at any of the pools. Maybe they could have an "adults only" pool where floaties and use of balls to throw would be ok. Again, I have never had this rule at any other resort. It really impacted our ability to relax and enjoy the pool. The ocean was very churned up and there was seaweed, maybe it was the time of the year, but as we walked down the beach toward the other Riu (the palace), the water was more clear and the beach was wider. The beach at the hotel was narrow, had lots of trees growing on it and had NO HUTS for shade. I thought this was odd as they did have the around the pool. You are not allowed to put your chair on the grass. Not sure I understand that when much of the grass was brown. My friend, who burns in the sun, moved her chair to get in the shade as the sun moved and there were no other chairs available at the pool, and was told to move her chair off the grass!!! What harm could it do? FINAL IMPRESSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: Well, I had a great time, the weather was fantastic EVERY DAY and the food was amazing. Plus I met some fantastic people. Because I paid about $2200 for the week and the most I've ever paid in Cuba was $900, I have to ask myself it is was worth double the price? I have to say no. Probably not. I might go back to Jamaica, but likely not to this resort. I do love the music and the people we spoke to were amazing. The beaches in Cuba are much better and I can do 2 trips per year for the money. Ok, yes, the food in Cuba is not very good but, I always have enough to fill me and I don't go away to gain weight! LOL

Excellent staff... but food was poor

Check in was quick and front desk staff was great... Our room was clean with partial ocean view and stocked bar. Unfortunately we did not like the food. 2 weddings closed 1 of 2 restaurants that were ok the other 3 restaurants we didn't like. We enjoyed the steakhouse the most but it was closed twice for a wedding reception. (I don't think that is very all-inclusive) and the Chinese restaurant was ok too. The Dinner Buffet didn't have much selection. (same ingredient in different dishes). Dessert always empty. (just seemed like they were trying to save money.. I expected more from a RIU) The lunch buffet would run out of food before lunch ended. (It ran 12-5 food was gone by 3:30) and the Jerk hut on the beach had great chicken but they were open till 4 and when we came by at 2:50 it was all gone. I loved the beach and I snorkeled everyday. We booked a snorkeling excursion through scuba carib thru the resort and had fun but they ran out of flippers and I had to snorkel without which if I had known I would of brought my own. I would of enjoyed it a lot more with them because I saw an eagle ray and it would of been a lot easier to have followed him :(... It also took us to Ricks and Margaritaville the tour was $59 each The entertainment staff at the resort was great we found everyone very friendly. We were a close ride to 7 mile which costed $20 round trip. We enjoyed paddle boating. We've been to Jamaica before and loved it, We will be back again just with a different resort.

Great place food was terrible

We have been to a lot of RIU hotels and the hotel was great but the food was pathetic. Worst food we have ever had. People were good the hotel was great and the ingredients in the buffets were great but the Chef should go back to cooking school. One of the cooks said to the person who complained about the food said "All I can do is cook what they gave me"' That summed up the food. Even the ice cream was crap. All they had to do was keep it frozen and it was like whip cream.

Disappointed

On arriving at the hotel I was so disappointed that the beach was covered in seaweed due to bad weather (obviously unavoidable) but it took a few days for it to be cleared and no crystal clear water during my stay. The hotel was clean and well maintained and my room was very comfortable although I would have preferred tea and coffee making facilities rather than the mini bar. It was extremely noisy in the social areas and difficult to find a quiet area. The staff were friendly and helpful.
