Fun, Friendly, and Clean Resort. Our 13th RIU
newschick, Florida
Mon Mar 27 17:27:44 EDT 2017
We are an active mid 40's couple. This was our 13th RIU. Let's just say we love the RIU brand--a good price for a great experience. But we have stayed at Iberostar, Club Med, and Sandals. Is this a five star resort? NO. But we had a 5 star experience as usual with RIUs. Let me start by saying we stayed at the Sandals down the street for 3 nights before coming to the RIU. We were so excited to move to the RIU. The Sandals, while very nice is some respects, was dull. It was 3 times the price as the RIU for the *lowest level room. POOL Always a fun pool atmosphere with games and plenty of fun bartenders. There is also a quiet pool if you are looking for that and the further down the beach was also quiet. We were only there for 3 days and the one thing I missed was pool volleyball. But, we had enough fun meeting new friends at the pool bar. DRINKS They don't have all the top shelf brands. My husband likes Tanqueray Gin and they didn't have it. But he was alright. Think of how much you paid for all you can drink and eat and name brand isn't as big of deal:) We do like the Palace RIU's for higher end liquor. But, we knew what to expect. Since I mentioned the Palaces, we did walk to the Palace Tropical Bay. It is in desperate need of a renovation...so we were happy with our non-palace choice this time around. FOOD Always good. But, I will say we only eat at the buffet. In the past RIU's ala cartes have been just ok although there is the occassional lobster at the steak house. But, the buffet always has lots of great options. We are never disappointed. You must get the ice cream! The jerk chicken shack is always great, too. We grab a plate and then walk to the lunch buffet for salad, etc... ROOMS Clean, double marble sink, nice shower, with minibar and fridge full of beer, soda and water. We paid for the wifi so we could get it in our room. I think it was $30. But, if you are a member of RIU class you get a discount. NIGHTLIFE I love that the theater is right in the center of the resort. The Silver Birds Steel Drum band on Sundays is great!! But, we went to bed early around 11 Sandals didn't do anything for my birthday. But as soon as Rochelle and Kevan found out when we checked in...they sang happy birthday and sent up some rum. Rochelle would always yell my name and say hi as we walked through the lobby. In fact, everyone...down to landscapers and housekeeping was extra friendly. Some of the Sandals staff wouldn't even respond when I said hi. Don't forget to ask Paul the bartender in the lobby bar to sing. (look him up on youtube) Claudia at the lobby was also great. Ask for a French Kiss drink...it's like Miami Vice with Mango YUMMY. Small things to improve...the toilets in our room had rust which made them look dirty. Either put something in the tank or do an overhaul. Restrooms near the pool. I realize it may be too late for this resort (we had to walk to restrooms at the theater) But, RIU PLEASE as you build more resorts.. put some restrooms by the pool bar. I noticed the new, quiet pool had some. But, it was a hike to go from the pool bar. If you want an affordable, fun trip...this is for you. If you want to pay 3x more to say you went to Sandals and have a few nice quiet dinners...pay extra and go to Sandals. We don't think it's worth it. We are already looking for RIU #14 for our next vacation. We took a cab to Rick's Cafe and used Luxury Carib Tours Jamaica. Andre was great. He even stopped at a couple grocery stores for us to buy coffee. But, I loved the shack stores along the beach. It's a great way to buy gifts. I got a dress, tshirts, beach towels, and there is even food.

Not the best

Took this vacation with a group of friends. My husband and I took our three young children aged 5, 3 and 9 months. The drive from the airport was at least an hour and a bit.... but it was a good ride. We didn't expect too much from the resort as we stayed in a riu varedero in Cuba which really let us down previously. I need to start by saying how pleased we were with the people that worked at this riu in Jamaica. They were always pleasant and very upbeat, always knew our children by name and did everything in their power to make sure we were happy. We arrived at the resort by about 2pm and at that time the only place to get food (refrigerated hot dogs and hamburgers or cold popcorn) was at the sports bar, as the restaurants and buffets were all closed until 6:30pm, which if you have kids you know, is not acceptable. The buffet had the same food every day, which was ok for the first couple days but got a bit boring after that. Nothing special to eat, but definitely a good variety. The restaurants (four of them) did not take reservations and because of this was a first come first served basis. If you have ever travelled with children you know that if they don't eat by a certain time, your in for it. Not only were 2/4 restaurants closed most of the time due to low occupancy at the resort but if you weren't there by 6:30pm sharp, you couldn't eat until 9:00pm at the second seating, which was too late for us and the kids. The beach is beautiful, make sure you grab drinks before you make your way to the beach though because there is only one beach bar and it's closer to the far end of the resort. Make sure you try the jerk chicken on the beach, it's amazing. Many beautiful fish right where you swim, there is also a fish sanctuary at the far end of the resort which is great to take kids. The hotel room was ok but for five of us was a little tight. We had three kids and they still put us on the second floor with no elevator, so my husband and I were hauling the double stroller up and down the stairs all week which got a bit annoying. Also, no bath tub or coffee maker in the room and the walk to get coffee in the morning was quite a distance and we were in the first section of rooms. Fridges were stocked regularly and cleaning staff were great. No issues with bugs or critters of any kind. Riu land was great, we left our kids for an hour and a half two days we were there and they had a great time. The kids were able to dance at night before entertainment for adults started. He kids truly had a great time. Overall we really did enjoy our vacation, but some small changes would have made a huge difference. Would I stay here again, no ...

disappointed

I was disappointed in this hotel. The cleanliness could not be faulted but the little details were overlooked. The loo roll holder was hanging off the wall, the bathroom door was damaged, the bolt in the veranda door fell out every time that I unlocked it and the shower ran hot and cold. The hotel blocks were very noisy at night with loud guests returning to their rooms. The food served buffet style was great the first couple of days but there seemed to be less choice as the two weeks went on. The only milk on offer for coffee and cereal was goat milk which was not nice. The food never seemed hot enough. . There were no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms which meant a trip to one of the bars every time I wanted a hot drink. The pools close at 6pm every day. Maybe it would be nice to keep one open till late. I found the female staff friendly but not very happy and the male staff over friendly. The hotel seemed to be dominated by men in prime jobs and the women were mainly cleaners and waitresses. I was told by one of the bar managers that women weren't able to do the bar job and were better suited for cleaning. The entertainment staff were great at their main shows but the dragging people on stage got very samey and it reminded me of a bad Butlins. On one of the nights I was there the owners of Riu visited. It is a shame that they did not stop and talk to some of the guests. I enquired about swimming with dolphins and was assured by the Thompson rep that the dolphins were not captive and were free to come and go. I did some digging and found that they had been captured in Cuba and transported under bad conditions. I did not go swimming with dolphins. On the whole I would not holiday here again. This cost a lot of money and was rated on Thompson website as 5 star. I beg to differ.

This trip was just a bunch of happy mistakes. We booked the palace but somehow through a miscommunication we ended up being booked at Riu Negril next door. We were dead set on moving at the first opportunity and then we met Rochelle at the front desk who turned our experience around. Within one day Rochelle and her crew had made us at home and by the next morning we had absolutely no intention of moving We travel extensively and Rochelle is one of the true hospitality professionals who knows her job and knows how to make guests welcome. Riu is fortunate to have her. She turned what started out as a very ugly experience into a joy. Can't say enough about her. We are truly grateful

Unfortunately, a little underwhelmed.........

Let me start by saying that there is nothing essentially wrong with this place if you want to spend your week/fortnight in a drunken haze, it just didn't have that bang for buck factor that other Riu's have. Also, be aware that this hotel is NOT on seven mile beach but a bay around the corner, which we hadn't realised when booking due to the clever wording in the Thomson spiel (naughty). There is nothing outside the front door except the main road. Because of this, if you want to escape the confines of the hotel it involves getting a grossly overpriced cab to Negril town. You could of course walk but I wouldn't recommend that for your own safety. The guest accommodation reminded me of barrack block houses and, whilst the rooms were always clean they just looked "tired". There's a set of optics in the room that get re-filled every two days and a fridge with beer and soft drinks that are replenished like wise; great, but I really like a coffee in the morning to kick start my day but the only way I was going to get one was slogging to the main hotel as there's no facilities in the room. Be aware that there are groups who seem to treat this as a "spring break for grown ups" type venue, as evidenced by their non-ability to hold their drink and balcony parties at all hours of the night. I'm no party pooper but having to listen to their screeching and some of their awful music choices at 3.00am whilst trying to get some shuteye got a bit wearing. The beach sand is imported but not really an issue and loungers are nearly always available. Plenty of loungers around the pools also but be quick/up early if you want to snag one when it's busy. Some complain about the beach sellers but, to be frank, some of these complainers need to get a life. They're never pushy, never try and hard sell, never try and con you and will chat the day away about life, the universe and everything. Buffet style food for the most part was above average and the jerk chicken bar on the beach was excellent. Pick of the restaurants for me was the Asian fusion, absolutely fantastic, highly recommended although the boss preferred the Kulinarium. The steak house was simply awful the night we went, had ribs but I'm not sure from what, most likely goat that had died from starvation, boss had what could be loosely described as a rubber steak; if you want a superb steak, go to the Kulinarium. Didn't try the Italian, spoiled with the number of them we have at home. Bars were what you'd expect, I wasn't overly impressed with the cocktails, most consisted of saccharide saturated slush with some alcohol thrown in. That said, if you went away from the menu, most of the staff could knock up a decent one. Staff. A high point for me. Always willing to help, always polite, professional, great sense of humour from the reception, cleaning, bar, entertainment, catering and waiting staff, some girls in the shop could do with an attitude adjustment but, overall, a fantastic team. Well done.
