3rd time at the RIU Negril
KURT S.
Jul 29 2018
We’ve been to this resort twice before, this time we brought the kids. Food was terrific, beach terrific, staff great, but the maid service was below expectation. We asked for a couple extra pillows on day one in the morning. They brought the pillows between 9:30 & 10:00p when we were all sleeping. Day 4 we were out of soap and shampoo, so we asked for it to be replenished in the morning. Guess what time they showed up? Between 9 & 10p again. There is no way to bolt the door, so they knocked and came in while we were sleeping. The guy couldn’t get the shampoo dispenser open, so he gets into a long conversation on his cell phone in our room while my kids were sleeping. I like the resort and the food was better than I remember, but housekeeping was a challenge on this visit.

The variety and quality of the food was excellent. Overall the hotel was a little run down. We had some problems the first night with the a/c in our room but it was fixed after the first night.

I saw many staff walk right by trash left on the property. The room was clean but needed many repairs which the maintenance did do. The beach was raked every day but most of the time the debris was left in a pile. The ocean floor close to the beach was full of grass and algae which I was told they can't touch it to remove. I would not categorize this hotel as a 5 star resort more like 3 1/2 stars. The entertainment was always late around 9:30pm and we were tired so we didn't see the entertainment. The natives were constantly pestering us to buy their items. In fact they stood on the beach all day long. The police had to remove them on one day. The drinks were very good but at night it seemed like they doubled the alcohol and were too strong. Most of the bartenders were awesome and friendly. Recommend taking a catamaran for a day trip to Rick's Cafe, Margaritaville and the caves. Had a great time and the staff were dancing and so much fun.

Everything was great and had a wonderful time. The rooms were large, cleaned and highly maintained. The only drawback was you could not use a pool after 7 pm.

Honeymoon Memories

My husband and I arrived for our honeymoon and found it quite entertaining that we were put in a room with 2 twin size beds. We also overheard other guests talking about having a bottle of champagne waiting in their rooms for them since they were celebrating their marriage, we did not. My husband is handicap and needs a shower chair to shower with. His first shower there the chairs leg broke and he fell. I called the front desk immediately to let them know the chair was broke and the shower curtain was broke due to him falling, they did ask if he was okay but they never sent anyone to the room to look at anything or replace the chair. I had to help him shower the rest of our stay. There were only about 5 or 6 employees that we really felt went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. Everyone was very nice but didn't necessarily try and form bonds. When we arrived at the airport on our first day the apple guy grabbed our luggage and then asked us if we were going to tip him, I thought that was a little rude considering there was so much going on I didn't even know what was happening. Overall we had a great time, and our friend who booked the vacation for us did an amazing job, she was so helpful and made sure we did not have any questions before we left. I will use apple to book my next vacation and I would stay in Jamaica again but I would probably never stay at the RIU again.

I went to the Riu Negril with my boyfriend for 7 nights. This was our first experience in Jamaica, and it was absolutely beautiful! The hotel staff was wonderfully kind, and extremely helpful. The food wasn't luxury, but there was always plenty of options to choose from. By far, the best food we had at the resort was the jerk chicken at the beach hut!!!! It was out of this world every time! The beach was clean, there were plenty of places to sit, and plenty of friendly people to talk to. We did a catamaran tour to Half Moon Bay, and I would highly recommend this trip! We also took a cab to a couple of restaurants off the resort. I felt very safe, and had excellent food and service at Ivan's and Rockhouse. You can't go wrong at the Riu Negril or Jamaica!!!!

Room Review

We had issues with our room. The first night there the room had water all over the floor due to the air conditioning unit leaking. I slipped on the floor and almost fell. The next day we had no towels to dry off after showering. Also the air conditioning unit was not working properly and we could not adjust the air temperature. Even my husband who is generally very warm was freezing in our room. It was very uncomfortable.

Big disappointment!

Stayed at this hotel for dream weekend and it was one of the worst hotel my friends and I have ever stayed. Starting from the beginning the food was horrible not alot of options to choose from. Most days we were hungry and did not know what to eat. Some of us decided to buy food on the road, or down by the beach. This hotel is suppose to be a 5 star but doesn't have room service? Staff was not consistent with rules pertaining to dress code allowance in eating commons. One day bathing suits were fine the other days they weren’t. It all depended on who was at the front door ... As long as you had a tip we would be catered to correctly. Knowing that its dream weekend which is a time where revenue to the hotel is extremely increased. We should have been able to get what we paid for, which was Good food and good service. Overall we were very disappointed and we will not stay here again and I don’t recommend anyone else to stay here either. Especially if you are looking for quality 5star experience.

Better than Beaches Ocho Rios

This is a very nice hotel, seems to me like RIU Negril is on a mission to debunk Beaches. Since we have stayed in the past at Beaches Ocho Rios and Negril, I’ll base my review comparing with those other two. The occupancy and reservations: Very good, plenty of rooms available at time of reservation and not crowded during our stay. The rooms: I booked two rooms both were pretty nice and everything in in excellent shape and cleanliness. Very nice tiled floors, beautiful bathroom, conveniently stocked servi-bar with alcoholic drinks and soft drinks. The beds were comfy but I just would wish that instead of having two full beds together in one of our rooms it would have been a king size bed. The restaurants and food: Great variety for lunch and dinner, but breakfast seemed a bit monotonous I could not find Mexican style breakfast something like chilaquiles or refried beans. Breakfast consisted mostly of eggs different ways, French toast, Pancakes, Bacon, Sausage, etc. Of course there was plenty of fruit choices, vegetables and some other fixings throughout the day. The sports bar was nice and cool with a couple of pool tables however not free, RIU has to come up with a system to make it free without letting just a few take control of the pool tables. The bars: Mostly good but at times the drinks were loaded with rum which would make them undrinkable. However, I have to give credit to the bartenders because there is just too many people asking for drinks at times to pay close attention to the amount of alcohol put on each drink. The swimming pools 3 in total, 2 of them were good one was like a bacteria or urine soup this is the one with the wet bar. The kids in this particular pool were playing with the cups on the pool after finishing their drinks practically washing off all sorts of drinks in the pool. If you pay close attention to the people swimming you’ll hardly see them getting out to go to the boys/girls room, actually you can tell the difference in the water color between this pool and the other two. In any case this not the hotel’s fault, is the guests who have to educate themselves. The beach is perhaps something RIU needs to work on. It sulfur odor coming out from the sand was not pleasant and it felt muddy, it would make you think you are swimming in a sewage pool. However, if you take a kayak ride and paddle away from the beach you can admire the beauty of the ocean and can actually see the ocean floor up to probably 8 to 10 feet. You could see the fish, starfish, and the sea urchins, it was amazing. Entertainment: Wow this was amazing, in my opinion this blows the socks off Beaches or Punta Cana Club Med. All the girls and guys entertainment staff put up a good show day and night. A different show every night and different entertainers aside from RIU own entertainment staff.

Got married here!

First of all I would like to say what an amazing place Jamaica is! As for the hotel, it was very clean, I felt most staff were helpful and friendly, the pools and the beach was great. The entertainment was good, they all work really hard, spotlight, rollie poly ect. The rooms are quite basic but are kept very clean, the green Island buffet always had lots of choice and me and my youngest are very fussy eaters, we always found something to eat! Me and my partner married at the beach gazebo on the 3.8.18, the wedding coordinator was fantastic, the true colours photography team we're also brill, very patient with my youngest who hates having his pic taken! We also has photos taken done by them on our last night. You do get asked if you want to buy weed from people on the beach, a simple no and they leave you alone, you do also smell it from time to time but hay ho it is Jamaica! All in all me and my little family had an amazing time..Don't be put off by all the negative reviews.

great place to relax

We had a great stay at the Rui. We really chilled out and relaxed. While down at the pool bar there was plenty of activity/excitement for those that wanted it the size of the beach and the other pool meant that there was plenty of beautiful quieter spots for those of us not wanting to "party" the day away. The snorkelling trip was great fun and we used the small catamarans to sail every day. Those and the sailboards and canoes were brilliant and really helped make it a great holiday for us. The gym was also up to a good standard and a great way to spend time when the rain came down. I was very pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food at the buffets. As a vegetarian I was slightly concerned that there would be limited options but while clearly there is much more choice for those who eat meat I was never short of options. This included plenty of protein, often there's salads/vegetables but there was plenty of variety of bean dishes and of course cheese. The fruit and vegetables were of a really high quality. In fact I are far too much over the two weeks. Alchohol: what can I say you could drink 24 hours a day. Even your room has a selection of beer, spirits and mixers to keep you topped up. The bars are all great and there always somewhere quite to drink and chat or somewhere with plenty of entertainment. Some of the bands were brilliant and there was plenty of dancing and fun for when you were in the mood. Like all these sorts of places people tend to say in the resort but it was easy to either walk along the beach past all the stalls or along the road to the official craft market. While you can get a taxi tour into Negril itself via the hotel there are plenty of cheaper taxis driving along the road if you start off walking and then the heat makes you keener on a lift back home. We really enjoyed having a few rums in Negril itself. Lots of the young people headed into Negril to go clubbing and seemed to love that too. What makes the hotel is the staff: they were so lovely, really chatty and eager to help you have a great time. It's quite informal but still efficient. You always had the feeling that they would get you what ever you needed. Having said all that we didn't really get to see much of Jamaica as even a trip to Montego Bay was nearly 2 hours away. So it's not a great base for island exploration. We did a day trip to a river raft/waterfall climb but that turned out to be 2 activities which lasted less than an hour each but 6 hours on a bus. It was a lovely place to be with a great beach, lots of fun activities in the resort and plenty of places just to chill out and so if that's what your looking for you'll have a ball.

This was my 4th time visiting Jamaica. I love the friendliness of Jamaican people and the beautiful surroundings. This resort met all of my expectations - friendly staff, good food, lots to do, fantastic beach, and pleasurable strolling. Only drawback to this one is the long walk from some rooms to the resort center, but, hey, I appreciate the exercise.
