Visited RIU Club Negril as had an excellent experience of RIU Palace Mexico. We chose this over the palace due to the reviews on various sites and that most referred to tired decor at the palace versus refurb at the club RIU. Overall a great holiday, it is what you make it. Some observations out of our control: Very noisy hotel as lack of sound absorbing furnishings, pictures, soft furnishings etc in room blocks. That can be changed by the hotel, however inconsiderate guests will wake you... daily! We were there for 2 weeks and noise started at 6am. Poor allocation of multiple family rooms meant that we were positioned in between two families/ friends who kept visiting one another very early and banging on each other's doors, I ended up telling them to keep the noise down. This worked until the same happened when they departed. One morning I counted 26 times. Reservations, please allocate rooms appropriately.... Food- excellent choice, get in early as favoured items can be demolished pretty quickly and you can be faced with a delay for popular dish replacements.Temperature of the 'hot' food is concerning as most are only luke warm. However that being said the choice was fantastic and very tasty. Avoid key brekkie time, you will experience delay in foods being replenished. Entertainment Staff- Entertainment team are incredible and work extremely hard putting together excellent performances each night. Bar Staff- Evening team, miserable and rude. Glasses soon run out, don't bother tipping it won't make a difference. The bar supervisor will watch while the team are under pressure, very poor as a delay will be experienced . Day staff on the beach are fabulous and very personable! Management- Did not experience seeing anyone who resembled or introduced themselves as someone that could be approached to share observations with. If the chaps in the polo shirts were management, you need to do more than saying a hello at dinner at the door and converse more with your guests. Room Maids- excellent, beautifully clean room and request for additional bar items handled quickly. Beach- be prepared to be approached from a distance selling braiding, boat trips, Ganja etc regularly. To be honest these fabulous characters reinforced where we were, as Jamaica I feel has lost that Jamaican ting from previous visits, if they weren't there I could have been anywhere. The beach is nice, but the sun loungers are in dire need for replacement or at the very least cleaning! It all sounds very negative BUT it makes a good foundation for you to build a great holiday. Do see Christine TUI rep, go on Southern Adventure and Ricks Cafe Visit, highly recommended! Enjoy your hols!

Amazing holiday yet again!

As per usual, there's always someone moaning. I've been to plenty of Riu hotels and can honestly say this is my favourite. My second time returning and I plan to return in December for a third. The staff cannot be faulted they work endlessly to provide excellent customer service. The renovation is lovely and having a walk in shower in rooms as opposed to having to step into a bath is a lot better particularly for those who have mobility issues. I would just like to say Petrack and Franklyn the lifeguards, ALL of the entertainment team, Seyon and Brad who are waiters during breakfast and lunch and Garry who tends to be at the bar above the swim up pool bar are all incredible and truly made our holiday (and of course the wonderful Thomson rep Christine). I look forward to returning to my home away from home and if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with amazing staff and quality, this hotel is for you ignore comments from people who are moaning about mosquitos etc. I am allergic to mosquito bites and am bitten in England as well as abroad, it's inevitable in a tropical climate therefore come prepared.

BAD REVIEW: MILDEW, NOT CLEAN, POOR SERVICE

We were very disappointed with this hotel! Room size: Deceiving room photos. We had the largest room in the hotel and it was nothing like the photo. Much smaller. We thought we were getting a separate adjacent living room for our kids. It was literally a dresser in between our "bedroom" and 2 steps then a cot and couch where they 2 kids slept. Thankfully our kids are toddlers or it would have been too small. Bathroom (Smelly & moldy): The bathroom never smelled fresh from the moment we arrived. There was terrible black mold in the shower. I never felt comfortable showering there. When I asked houskeeping to please spray some tilex nothing happened. The tile was very dark so it just had a dark, dank feeling. Hotels should have bright beige or white tile to show that they are clean. There was also tan/brown bath towels which was also suspect and I felt were used to cover stains. Most hotels have white towels which show everything. The toilet smelled of urine when we arrived and even after we asked for it to be cleaned each day. Leakage and mold: The was water leaking from above our room in the hallway for a whole day. We had to call and report it 3 times before someone came and said it was the AC above ours that was leaking. We were in horror thinking it was a toiled above ours. The was mold in the bedroom as well on the walls. Bugs: There was small little sand flies or mosquitoes that hung around our door and more and more entered each day to the point we had to close off the bathroom and entrance from the rest of the room. We asked for some type of bug spray. It never came. We were completely bitten up from the first night. Cable: The cable was never clear. We called maintenance and discovered there was no proper connector on the end of the cable cord to keep it in. It was just resting there bare. This was unacceptable as the tv swiveled between the living area and bedroom. He never returned the whole 7 nights and it was never clear. Poor service: The staff was slow and unresponsive. It took half the day to get anything from housekeeping or the front desk if you called. The first day are luggage was left at the wrong hotel by the airport bus and when we asked for help we were told their representative would be back the next day. They showed no concern or urgency. Food: The food was ok I guess but the tables were never wiped down in between guests. The restaurants (especially the breakfast buffet) just never felt clean. The breakfast staff was very nice though. Pools: The largest pool (with the bar) had a slime sludge on top of the water the last day and a ton of bugs to the point we had to get out. No one came to check on it or clean it. The kiddie pool was good for our small kids. SPA: The spa was small and cramped. The nail polish came off from my pedicure the next day. There was another lady complaining about her mani and pedi peeling when I was in the tiny spa as well. I cancelled my massage as the room was equally cramped and anything but luxurious. As the general cleanliness of the hotel was not good I didn't feel comfortable. Doctor on site: We went to the doctor to see if my 2 year old daughter to get some relief from the terrible bites she had. We had to pay $250 up from just for the lady to even look at her. They were not every nice and left us standing there for 5 mins whilst they talked with my daughter scratching. No greeting. Nothing. Overall a very bad experience. I do NOT recommend this hotel. For what we were told it was and to have had the best rooms it had to offer...very disappointing!

Improvements appreciated ! More needed !!

This is our second time at Club Riu Negril in the last 10 yrs. Let me Start with the positives. The lobby is very large and inviting; rooms are spacious and well cleaned; excellent buffet, good tasting food with lots of variety; most of the staff are helpful and friendly; and the entertainment team works very hard and are very talented. Here are my negatives, but mostly concerns which if changed could add to the good things about this hotel. The renovations added great improvements to the property, but much more is needed to bring the rooms up to par. For e.g taking a shower was stressful because the shower was difficult to regulate and lots of water ended up on the bathroom floor after each use( not pleasant !!). The reception desk are mostly young adults, they work well, but there seems to be a level of experience missing. Managers need to be more visible around the property overseeing service to guests or following up. Since this hotel caters to families, and many children attend the evening shows, the entertainment staff need to clean up some of their acts. As parents and grandparents we were uncomfortable with some of these acts. Lastly, there should be some type of limited transportation for guests with physical problems to get around the property if unable to walk long distances.

We were greeted at check-in with a non-alcoholic fruit punch which was lovely. Check-in was quick and easy. Being a family of 6 with 2 rooms, it can normally take a while, but it wasn't long at all. We were given stickers with our room numbers to put on our suitcases and they were taken to our rooms by the staff. We gave a tip, but you don't need to. Our rooms were in Block 1 on the ground floor (1019 & 1020). They were very clean and the air conditioning was wonderful. The fridge was re-stocked every 2 days as stated and the rooms were cleaned every day. The cleaners did a wonderful job and even left towel origami on some days, which was a nice touch. The pools were lovely and warm. We were never in the pool with the swim up bar as it was the entertainment pool which reminded me of a club 18-30 party pool... it looked like everyone was having a great time. We used to the other two pools where we played basketball and other ball games as a family. The entertainment staff were wonderful. They gave their all to everything that they did, whether it was beach volleyball, pool aerobics or the shows at night. The beach was nice. The sand was quite compact and hard but still nice. The Sea was lovely and warm and snorkelling was fantastic. We seen stingrays and lion fish which was amazing. The staff throughout the hotel were very friendly and always said hello. The food was always hot and cooked perfectly. The mango and pineapple were delicious, the nicest I've ever tasted. All of the food that we had was lovely. My 4 children always like to try new things in different countries, so all inclusive is always perfect for us. The goat curry was lovely and the lobster was cooked perfectly. There were things like burgers, hot dogs and chips available too. We went to Mandalay restaurant 4 nights out of the 10 as it was our favourite. We didn't have to wait in a long queue to get in at 6.30pm, but the queue outside Seagull was always extremely long. I had a couple of maintenance issues with my room while we were there, but I phoned reception from my room before going to dinner and when I returned they were fixed. Reception then phoned me later to check that everything was now ok, which was nice. The reception staff were always helpful and friendly whenever I needed anything. I was slightly concerned before booking this hotel when I read reviews of people selling drugs on the beach and vendors constantly pestering sunbathers to buy things, but it wasn't like I expected at all. My husband was offered drugs twice when our children weren't with him, and when he politely declined he was given a fist bump followed by the words "no problem". I was only asked to buy things once on the beach, and when I said no thanks, I was given a fist bump followed by the words "no problem". We did have a look in the stalls along the beach, and all of the vendors that we met were very friendly. We bought a wood carving from one of the stalls where you can watch the man carve them by hand, such incredible skill. I didn't bother trying to knock money off the price, because I could see how much work he puts into his carvings, I feel like I got a bargain! All in all we had a perfect holiday at Riu Negril.
