Beach of Riu Negril

I can just simply say that the resort in general is above average , good in size not too big to walk from one end to another. To my surprise , we had a great Christmas feast of seafood . Now if you re coming to this resort for the beach then you ' ll be disappointed. It looks fine , picturesque , calm water and shallow , but what you feel underneath your feet once in the water is kind of muddy and disgusting . There s a part of the beach that you can smell the sewage in the water and even in the air. The solution is you can stay at this hotel for a good price then take the cab everyday to Seven Miles beach to swim ( not that far and it costs 5 $ per person one way ) . Btw, i am a beach person and i do travel extensively to resorts after so many years ,so i am not exaggerating. If you re a pool person then it would not be any problem. Bon voyage More>

Resort was nice. We had just been at the Riu in Ochos....and I felt Negril was good for relaxation. Rooms were adequate/ view amazing and maids kept everything stocked. Hallways seemed to need more attention to cleanliness. I did notice staff were very good about greeting when they seen you. Food was EXCELLANT....I was disappointed with the dinner wine. I also believe that lemon/lime wedges would be an asset for some of the bevy's. Entertainment was AWESOME....If anyone knows the video SPOTLIGHT was in would love to find it. Loved to watch the dancing. Great talent ! Taxi prices are the MOST expensive for the distance in all my travels. Excursions...we went to the Glistening Waters and swam in the bioluminous waters. Highly recommend this. We did that a taxi to Rick's Café for sunset, food and enjoyment. More>

We came here to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. What a lovely hotel. Its a little bigger than we are used to but i think that is the same with most Riu hotels, but the staff were just as attentive as if there were only you there. The food was excellent and always plenty of it and always HOT. Our room was over looking the gardens which was fantastic in the evening as we got to witness the fantastic spectacle of thunderstorms and lightening - i have never in my life heard thunder as loud!! We were in a block that was around a 10 minute walk to the restaurants but on a lovely humid evening that was fine, except by the time you got to the restaurant you were sweating but it is Jamaica isn't it. Lovely hotel, would recommend, but this hotel is not adult only (in case any one is wondering ) but the children we encountered there were all well behaved and there are loads of "reps " around to keep them entertained... I will write this as objectively as possible and break it by subject. Let me start out by saying that Negril is great and probably the best area of Jamaica. An all inclusive is typically not my scene. Jamaica is a poor country with its issues. You need to stay at a resort. Not one of those countries you can go off the beaten path. Location: Transfer from airport to Negri is 2 hours, worth the journey to be at Negril. Only negative is being in Negril puts you away from all the excursions. But you gain the best beach and a quieter area. Bloody Bay is way better than 7 mile b/c there are simply less peddlers and far less agressive. From my view the beaches were near identical, but bloody bay the water was cloudier. Hotel Room: Excellent. Great Air Conditioning, shower, bed, etc. Fridge was stocked with beers, there was a liquor dispenser which was nice if you wanted to just chill on the balcony. Some of the hallways got wet when it rained, but it is not a big deal. You can tell these were recently redone. Great maid service every day. We stayed at the farthest building from the main area and it is still close. The resort is not spread out. Reservation Restaurants: Booking these is a pain. You can only book 48 hrs in advance and only for that one day. What this does is force guests to eat the buffet for the first 2 nights there for dinner. Then the third day you can book a reservation, but only for one day, not multiples. This is the dumbest rule. It creates a huge line every morning of people trying to book 1 reservation every day while they are there. Their reservation system is not computerized. Why can't this be handled at check in for as many days as you are staying is beyond my compression. Instead the resort wants you to waste your time in line every single morning for at least 30 minute+. Inefficiency at its best. All of the reservation restaurants were good and of slightly higher quality than the buffet. Buffet: The breakfast buffet is second to none. Anything you could possibly want from European style cold cuts, traditional american, or some local flavor. Lunch buffet was just OK. They do have a good Jerk chicken hut in operation at the beach as well. Never had any issue waiting to get food at any of the buffets. High variety and something for everyone. Good quality. Would liked to have seen some more local dishes, but they had goat, duck, goat cheese, and local fruits. The dinner buffet was great, with the exception of desert. Very low quality deserts. The ice-cream looked "off" to me. It was like the cheapest tubs of ice-cream one would find at the Acme at home that was slightly off in color. Not edible. They need to have a place for snacks late night or during the day. When no buffet is open there no snacks around. Coffee is excellent! Question: Why do you have to pay for the use of the pool table at the sports bar? The beach/pool: They keep it clean, never an issue with chairs. There are palm trees or huts to stay in the shade if you want. The peddlers are kept back on the waterline and generally don't bother you. They peddle locally made crafts and "herb". You have to swim in a swim zone, but the zone is very large. It is the shame the water is very murky. Water Sports: You don't really get snorkeling for free as advertised. It requires a $25 deposit. Why won't your room and name do? It also does not come with fins, just the actual snorkel. Where I come from fins are part of the snorkeling set. Sailing is not really free either b/c if you have never done it the cost is $25 a person and the instructor is NEVER around. They should have paddle boards, but do not. Kayaks were OK, but were frequently in use. We did do the paid snorkeling/rick's cafe trip at $50 a head which was fun.You can take it with one of the local vendors on the beach as well if you want to price compare. It was more of a booze cruise than a snorkeling trip. I could also have done without the rick's cafe, that place is a straight up trap. The free pool scuba lesson is not real. A staff member who is not in the water hands you the vest and tank and lets you breath under the water for 20 seconds and then tries to get you to sign up for a lesson. False advertising at its best. Didn't matter to me as I've been scuba diving at a few different places. Other folks were very annoyed. Bugs- You will get bit after 5:30/6pm, bring bug spray. No issue during the day or while inside at the buffet/restaurants. They try and smoke the beach around 6pm, but it doesn't do much good. Service/Staff- Excellent. Friendly bartenders. The staff that gets the crowd rowdy at the beach and in the pool are fantastic. A little pushy at times to participate, but that is expected. Gets the people going! Alcohol: Bottom shelf liquors, which was OK and expected. The fruit drinks were bad. Not made with fresh fruit, but with liquid. Beers were either red stripe light or regular. That is decent beer, no complaints. Wine: Red or white. This deserves its own category and was the biggest complaint from just about everyone there. The wine was not drinkable. One can only assume they ordered it by the truck load and then watered it down. I am the type of person who can order any bottle of wine less than $10 and and have a 99% chance of enjoying it. Their wine being unacceptable is not my opinion, it is a fact and something they really need to fix. People were going out and buying bottles locally and having it with dinner. Overall: The price was right, the beach was great, service was friendly. The restaurant reservation system is painful for no reason. Breakfast is great, lunch OK, dinner good, deserts bad. Drinks OK, as expected. WINE IS TERRIBLE. If you want to go to Jamaica for a reasonable price, chill out at the beach/pool I'd maybe recommend this Resort, but be aware there are some issues. Note- Wifi only available in lobby. More>
