Overall food is ok. Not great. Specialty restaurants were below average. Some did not even open during our stay.

The only disappointments we had were with the excursions and the food. We felt the excursions were way over-priced and there should have been more jamaican cuisine. I get enough pizza, fries, burgers, asian food, and pasta here in the states.

Injury on their private beach

Aug 10 2018
My husband and I stayed at Riu Montego Bay for 7 nights. Unfortunately, on our 2nd day, as I was walking on the beach after coming out of the water, I stepped on an old iron nail with a hook on the end of it (was about 4 inches in length). I didn't even see the nail and initially thought I had stepped on a shell. I was taken to the nurse's station and as soon as she saw it, she immediately called the Medical Transport Van to take me to the Hospiten. My husband and I spent our entire 2nd day in the ER. Thankfully the hook didn't penetrate my bone, but all the shots and the procedure to remove the nail was very painful. This pretty much set the tone for the rest of our trip. Needless to say, I don't think we will ever stay at a Riu again.

The hotel staff was amazing. The room had cracks in the ceiling and needed painting. The a/c was ice cold. There is little to no shade at the beach. The food was adequate, not great for a RIU. Ive stayed at other RIUs where the food was amazing.

The negatives about my hotel stay were that they made me wait an extra hour before I could check in because they said the bed comforter was missing. I practically begged them to just let me have the key so I could change and enjoy the hotel and that they could drop the comforter off whenever. The front desk manager refused to allow that so I finally was able to get to my room around 4pm instead of the posted 3pm check in time. The only other complaint is that the mattress in my was extremely hard and uncomfortable. Other than that the hotel staff was very friendly and the hotel amenities were great.

For the price we loved the hotel. Staff were friendly and the food was great. Going back to Jamaica every year! Food, entertainment and activities were the bomb. I loved all aspects of the trip and will be returning every year. Dont waste your money on Scandals across the bay which is right next door. This place will blow you away. Loved every minute there.

Inconsistent Policy Enforcement
DIANE M.
Jun 05 2018
I am Kevin, Diane's Husband. We had a terrible experience on our last nights dinner. While waiting on a table in the Italian restaurant, an issue arose with the acceptable dress code policy with one young woman in a group of 4. When told she had to change her outfit, she and her group of other women proceeded to get loud , abusive and profane. It was an embarrassment to the United States to be represented by these foul mouthed, arrogant women. The hostess turned it over to the supervisor, the supervisor turned it over to the manager of all the restaurants, who RELENTED and walked back the policy allowing them to be seated(next to us, I might add, after we told the hostess not to seat them next to us) as it they we going "clubbing' and didn't have time. Her outfit was offensive and we left without eating, (after waiting all week to eat there). Earlier in the week I wore a sleeveless tank shirt to the buffet hall for dinner and was escorted out until i put on a shirt with sleeves. That is the inconsistency I am upset with. I WILL NOT RETURN to that RIU ever and will not recommend it to anyone. Regards, Kevin A Moore

We stayed in an oceanfront room at Riu Montego Bay. We have visited 15 other resort properties in Jamaica and here is a list of problems at this resort. The room balcony door would not lock. The lock mechanism was completely destroyed and maintenance could not fix, so we had to move out of our room. In the new room, the toilet was broken. It took 6 hours for someone to come and fix it. The rooms are bare bones with no coffee makers or alarm clocks. The bed are rough to sleep in and the pillows are not good. We had a rough time getting wash cloths. The pool is excellent, and the activities staff are super. The food was excellent. The staff, for the most part were not friendly, especially the maids. The Apple Vacation staff were only interested in selling excursions and not concerned with any problems you may have. The beach was a bay, and the water is not crystal clear like other areas in Jamaica we have visited.

The hotel was fine....no complaints at all, just seemed to be missing the "wow factor" of resorts I have stayed at in the past. I'd probably try someplace new if ever staying in Montego Bay again, just to try another out.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. I would even stay there again when I go back to Jamaica. This staff is wonderful, caring and honest good people. I felt entertained with the night shows, and really enjoyed endulging with the food choices. I made a mistake and left some money in the safe. It took me the whole weekend before I got in touch with the hotel, because I just knew that money was gone. After a week of correspondence with the hotel rep, my money was sent Western Union, and I now have my cash back and faith with their hotel staff.

As far as Riu's go it was more than OK. However, after you have been to one, they all become much of the same experience wise. Rooms were OK, as was the Food. for a short stay (a week or less) you'll enjoy it. Those staying longer will get fed up fairly quickly with the sameness of the place, more so if you don't get "out and about".....more about that later! The Beach was good, but it just didn't feel like other Beaches, it was very small overall, and felt very restrictive in being able to go for a "long Beach walk". Rooms.......were exactly what to expect from a Riu, as was what was provided within. Beds.......everyone has their own preferences, so it would be hard for "any" Hotel, whoever they are to please everyone, but these Beds were as hard as nails. Everyone we spoke to were complaining about them. Rooms were cleaned OK, but the stocking of the drink was a bit haphazard. When the Tonic water ran out, all we kept getting was soda water, after complaining they stocked it up (two bottles) but that was it, and we never saw any again, unless we saw the drinks man, and got some off him. Huge problem with our door lock, which made almost impossible to get into our room at times. Several visits from maintenance only lessened the problem slightly, but not eliminate it.....they should have just replaced the lock, which was obviously faulty. Pool area........OK. but too much Bob Marley being blasted out at full volume most of the day.....as I said earlier, all OK if you are staying for a few days, but after two weeks, you'll not want to hear Bob Marley/Reggae ever gain!!.....and it's not just in the Hotel. Outside Hotel............A few shops, small Mall, but nothing to write home about. Trips........These were hugely expensive for what you "actually" got from them. It would probably be cheaper to hire a Taxi for the day, and do your own thing in visiting many of the tours advertised.....even cheaper if you were to share with another couple! We only did one, (organised Tour) the "Bob Marley" experience, don't bother, unless you are a big Marley fan. Almost 2 hour drive to his place. Once inside the compound (that's the only way I could describe it!), the Tour took us through several Shops/Bars on site, visiting a couple of huts, and looking at his Tomb from a distance through a chain link fence . From our perspective it was a total waste of money!! but hey! Horses for courses! PS.........If you're a smoker, beware! there are only designated smoking areas in and around the Hotel, and they even patrolled around the accommodation blocks trying to catch people smoking...."EVEN ON YOUR BALCONY"!! Fair enough to not smoke in your rooms, but to ban smoking on the Balcony is a step too far!! BTW, I'm an Ex smoker, but I had a moaning wife who is, and resented having to trudge out to one of the smoking areas several times in the early morning, or if you were around the Pool, and other Public areas.

Just the best!!

Came for a two week holiday in the middle of August and I don't think I have the words to tell you how amazing it is- I truly didn't want to come home!! Lovely flight, quick 5 minute transfer to hotel and prompt check in with plenty of information being given about what was going on in resort. Rooms clean and tidy with the fridge being filled up every two days as well as the optics on the wall. Hairdryer, safe, iron & ironing board and TV with plenty of channels. Entertainment staff really friendly and even though it is a very busy resort, they remember who you are- big thank you to Styles who went and blew our lilo up for us, I think it would have taken the full two week holiday otherwise! Always plenty of activities going on around the pool during the day- aquafit, volleyball and a foam pool party every Monday. Little hut around the pool with games and books in lots of different languages which is open at different times throughout the day to borrow things from. There are plenty of sun loungers around the pool area and on the beach too where there are also games of beach volleyball and football during the day and a beach party on Tuesday nights! On the beach there are also peddle boats and other water sports to participate in, all included with your holiday at the resort which I couldn't believe! Food really nice and good meal times- not too early for breakfast which is always good and the jerk chicken stand was amazing for dinner. Night time entertainment is fab- the team work so hard! We wanted to go over to the blue diamond shopping centre opposite and the taxi drivers do a free trip over there from hotel reception and will come back for you when called by staff in the shop. Booked to go on trips through TUI to explore Jamaica but could quite easily have stayed on resort because there was so much to do! Had a fabulous time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who was looking at these reviews- I really didn't want to leave and will definitely be back!!

My wife and I stayed at the Riu for one night as a result of a layover at the hotel was all we could stand. The resort itself is very nice. The maintenance of the resort and the cleanliness was very good. But that's where it ends. First, the bed was like sleeping on a two by four. Extremely hard mattress, so if you like soft (which we do), you would not sleep well. Secondly, and most important is the food. The food in the buffets was probably the worst of any resort we've been to worldwide. Many of the foods did not have a sign associated with it, telling you what that particular item was. In fact, there was a lot of signage missing. Further, when there was a sign, it was placed by the wrong dish. Next, a quality resort does not leave grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, and other items out...only to get cold. Just looking at those items (and others) you can tell they've been sitting there a while. So, fresh is not the standard there. Also, there was an ice cream bin where you can take your own ice cream. Problem was, the ice cream was just about liquified and therefore inedible. While speaking to the food manager about that, she said it's because guests leaving the door to the bin open and the ice cream gets soft. I suggested that an easy solution to that is to place the bin behind the counter and let the staff serve the ice cream. The reply was that they don't always have the staff available. This response appeared to be accurate because while we were eating, the used plates were not taken from our table promptly at all. At breakfast the next morning, the hotel has a number of pitchers of juices. One of them was a spinach juice. They should have labeled that one, Ginger juice. There was so much ginger, I couldn't even finished more than a sip. There were a number of other terrible items sitting out getting cold at breakfast...way too many to write here. Oh, one more thing, to go to the restroom while eating in the restaurants at Riu....you need to go all the way to the lobby to do it. They don't have bathrooms in the restaurants. One employee at the front desk, Leon, was very helpful, friendly, fun to talk to. There should be more Leon's handling other parts of the resort. Suffice to say that if you going as a family and don't care about any quality of food, then stay at Riu. Otherwise, I would avoid this resort and stay at the Hilton.

I don’t really know where to start with this hotel in honesty. I always think a holiday with the family is a special time to make memories. But this place made nightmares. If you could lift it up and put it in Ibiza then it’s got some life for the 18-30 s holidays. I went with my daughter and wife and from the minute we landed I was offered drugs in from the TUI coach driver in front of my daughter. I explain on a family holiday mate got a 11 year old with us keep your voice down. Once at the hotel on Xmas eve check in was like a cattle and market and there was no one to be seen to help with cases to the room so you we had to carry are case s across the hotel grounds and try and find are block. We was on the 1 st floor and the block has no lifts so you have to hand ball your luggage up stairs. Just what you need after a 10 hour flight. Xmas eve dinner was a hour and half que in the heat . Unless you had a party size of 7 or more and then you can get a reservation. The 24 hour snack bar is worse than a British motorway service station. Nachos or popcorn or if you feel like putting something in the microwave pre cooked burgers. There’s no room service , no coffee or tea making facilities in your room and your not allowed to smoke on the balcony s or in the room. You can only smoke in certain place s well 3 in fact 2 little bushes tucked away and one by the entertainment end. Which you can smoke weed and fags till your heart is content. The fumes from the weed being smoked by the entertainment end blows inside the theatre point and you all including your kids get stoned. Don’t worry if you run out of weed or cocaine or even pills as TUI and the RUI have a three dealers till late at night patrolling the beach in there kayaks. I should know as I walked home at 9 clock with my daughter and wife when one asked if we would like some pills , coke or smoke . Explaining to a 11 year old why someone at ten at night sat on a kayak selling that this late was a tricky task. Oh I reported this to TUI and the resort and was basically told nothing can be done. There s no toilets near the swimming pool hence the very cloundy water in the swim up bar area. The rooms are so dated and we had mould in the bathroom ceiling. I ve seen better Travelodge s. Entertainment does nt blow me away the Jackson night was good but everything us is alright . Damon he really know s is stuff on the entertainment side and I will say talking to him makes me thinks he s going far as his know how in the buisness is just great. Avatar she has a bright future ahead another great person . Some of the others are better off in the 18-30 game. Caught two of the male entertainment staff wanting to have a fight with two of the American guests over a game of volley ball. Not professional at all. The jerk chicken hut is epic . Sports bar to watch game s is good. The boat trip from the beach is a must was well in pressed with that. I liked the Italian and steak house would like it more if you could book a time and not a first come first serve basis. The beer is alright Red strip but would be nice to get some branded whiskey and gin . Johnny the taxi driver is also a must to book through I got him for my trips out . He s a must. Would I go back yes I would to Jamaica but not here . This hotel suits young couples on the drink or people that want a quick 4-5 day cheap sun get away. It’s not kid friendly as there’s nothing for them and the security and druggies selling is nt what you want your kid seeing or hearing. If you ve done Mexico like we have before going to Jamaica and staying here you will be truly upset. I based my decision on coming through reviews on here and Facebook . Most of the reviews that are positive are Americans and canda that come for 4-7 days . If I just read the British ones that stay 14 nights it tells a different story. This really is nt family friendly I hope no one has to explain to a child about cocaine or any drug like we had to a hotel should feel secure and safe.

The place is a old classic. Beautiful gardens. Great vibes, nice views, good staff and great food. In case you like Breakfast juice it’s terrible coming out of a machine with nasty process sugars. Cocktails of course with cool Activities. After that The place is a dump won’t be back if you like to enjoy a nice cigar by the beach forget about that this place has more rules than sense. The water at the beach is Cove water the adult pool stayed dirty with a film floating in it, Family pool was drained and in active. And I hope you don’t enjoy a smoke these people will treat you like a misfit..
