When we checked in we were told our rooms was almost ready, and to come back in a half hour. When we returned we were told they still were not ready, and to come back in 15 minuets. We went and booked excursions and came back about 45 minuets later and the rooms were still not ready. When we finally got the keys, one of the rooms keys did not work, this took about 30 minuets or more to figure out. That room had an musty/moldy smell. It didn't go away so after 3 days we talked to front desk. We were told that a new room would be ready at noon the next day. it wasn't ready at noon, one or two thirty. We did not get the keys until after 5:00. One morning we woke up to no hot water, which then turned into no water or electricity for multiple hours. A few days later we had no water or power again for about an hour. When we spoke to the front desk/manager they were not overly concerned about our issues and we not overly helpful or concerned. This was our second stay at this RIU resort and third stay at a RIU resort. We were extremely dissattisfied with RIU Montego Bay this year.

There was no pool service. We are used to having a waitress come around and bring drinks at the pool. No service at the nightly entertainment either. The buffet was not to our liking. The nightly entertainment a couple of the nights was some of the best we have seen. The bartenders at the coconut were really good and we enjoyed sitting there. Not much in the way of music at the pool.

Nice. Clean. Family oriented resort. Staff extremely friendly. Entertainment was awesome. Pool was great. Great food. Very clean facility. Dining staff great too. Desserts weren’t that great, but decent. Great variety of dinners. Very pleased with everything. Would highly recommend resort. Pricing was great too! For context, my wife an I are early forties, two children 17, and 10. Girl, boy. Middle income, college educated.

The only disappointments we had were with the excursions and the food. We felt the excursions were way over-priced and there should have been more jamaican cuisine. I get enough pizza, fries, burgers, asian food, and pasta here in the states.

My husband and I stayed at Riu Montego Bay for 7 nights. Unfortunately, on our 2nd day, as I was walking on the beach after coming out of the water, I stepped on an old iron nail with a hook on the end of it (was about 4 inches in length). I didn't even see the nail and initially thought I had stepped on a shell. I was taken to the nurse's station and as soon as she saw it, she immediately called the Medical Transport Van to take me to the Hospiten. My husband and I spent our entire 2nd day in the ER. Thankfully the hook didn't penetrate my bone, but all the shots and the procedure to remove the nail was very painful. This pretty much set the tone for the rest of our trip. Needless to say, I don't think we will ever stay at a Riu again.

The hotel staff was amazing. The room had cracks in the ceiling and needed painting. The a/c was ice cold. There is little to no shade at the beach. The food was adequate, not great for a RIU. I’ve stayed at other RIUs where the food was amazing.

Incredible vacation!

Where to even begin? My boyfriend and I booked this trip extremely last minute so we were not sure what we were going to get but we were not disappointed! We loved our week at Riu Montego Bay and will definitely be going back. The staff are all so kind, polite and willing to go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. We particularly enjoyed the staff at the pool’s swim up bar (thank you, Shauna and Chris for making us smile / laugh every day!) we were also impressed with the food. The buffet was always well stocked with delicious Jamaican food but they also had classic western food like pizza, fries, burgers etc if that’s what you like. I loved the oxtail and just like the other reviews say you have to try the jerk chicken on the beach made by “Chop Chop” who always has a smile on his face. The entertainment crew at the resort are lots of fun and encouraged us to get involved in some of the activities without being pushy. As a result I participated in a reggae dance step lesson and made friends with new people. The evening shows were also great (we loved the steel drum show and the reggae night). We also found that the resort was just good vibes. The guests are friendly and it’s easy to meet new people from around the world. The only thing I would say could be improved is that it would be nice to have the water bottles in the room restocked every day (they only restock every two days). Because it’s so hot we were chugging water every night once we returned from the beach. Overall though it was an incredible vacation. We don’t have enough good things to say about our time at Riu Montego Bay!

We were very happy with our VRooooOOOOOOoooom at the RIU Montego Bay. The food was VrrrrrrrOOOOOOOOOM and the room was nice as well even if it was a bit ZOOOOOMMOooooooooooooMMMMMMMMMM. Worth noting the resort is directly under the flight path for the Montego Bay Airport, as well, and planes drown out your conversation frequenZOOOOOOOOoooooOOOOMly. We tried the Italian place on our first night. We waited close to an hour because they don’t take reservations or have an organized waiting list, they just kind of tackle you if you try to walk in and tell you to sit outside. It was fine - but we didn’t bother going to any of the other restaurants for dinner because waiting sucks and the buffet was pretty good (if not better) anyway. The booze was all good - nothing watered down here. We did two excursions. The catamaran/scuba trip was pretty great, even though you get dumped at Margaritaville at the end for two hours. Which is good in principle, but two decent sized margaritas cost $50 US and we were aggressively hustled by the staff to buy everything from bigger drinks to hats to photos. So the cruise and diving were great, but Margaritaville isn’t good for kids (even if they advertise a water slide - the thing is a rickety death trap that dumps you into the ocean with an eight foot drop). Then we did the Negril/Rick’s Cafe trip. Negril was great, four hours on the beach and lunch included. Then we went to a small store that was pure hustle. Tour guide told us that we had to go there because they company said so (Sunwing?) and that we couldn’t tell the shop owners we were going to another shopping area next. She also told us that the shop was a ripoff, but that we need to buy things so she wouldn’t get in trouble. The shopping “mall” that came next was great. Sixteen or so stores, all basically the same, but kind of fun and quirky. Rick’s Cafe was good too and the sunset was as billed. We somehow thought dinner was included as well, but we ended up spending about $100 (US) to eat during our 1.5 hour stay. The resort itself was good. The pool was clean and so were the grounds. The beach isn’t fantastic, there’s about 10-feet of sand once you get in and then you’re into ankle deep mushy weeds. And there are Jamaicans in kayaks constantly floating in the beach area, trying to sell you souvenirs that are inevitably packed with pot. Amusing on day one, but they are relentless and have no problem pulling up to a small kid, giving him an item as a “gift” and sending the kid back to his parents for $20 (saw it happen twice). Only real legit concern was there are only two washrooms onsite, one at each end of the resort. I was wearing my Apple Watch the whole time, and was averaging 14k steps a day (most of those steps were visits to the other side of the resort for the toilet, or to drag my kids to a toilet).

Good for pool and beach but in need of updating!

Overall trip was good. Pool and beach area beautiful, the people at the hotel were lovely, there were activities there, and the gym was quite good. The hotel overall was very clean. The things people should know... The hotel is extremely outdated and this becomes very apparent in the rooms. Very budget travel looking when you got to rooms. Only supplied soap and shampoo no other amenities. Our unit had no elevator so you had to carry luggage up and down! Important to note that it wasn’t handicap accessible in any way. I don’t know about other units. There were sodas and waters in fridge and bottles of alcohol on the wall! The food was just ok. There are 3 restaurants. No reservations so you wait. We waited over an hour the first night for the “steak” restaurant and while the staff were lovely it definitely wasn’t worth the wait. We did buffet the other 2 nights and that was fine. Bfast and dinner buffets were better than lunch. There was bbq jerk chicken on the beach at lunch which was very good. You cannot get a mixed drinks in restaurants or buffet only beer/wine. Mixed drinks only from bar. Transports to and from airport were fine. And it was only 10 min away which was convenient but definitely lots of planes overhead. Didn’t bother us but might bother others. Very nice vibe, not rowdy or over the top but definitely fun and comfortable for hanging out. We saw all kinds of vacationers from families to couples.

Worst vacation ever

Booked vacation package to Montego Bay, Jamaica March 8-11 for hotel RUI Montego Bay. We arrived and didn’t receive the free spa credit. Also, I wrote in my description when I booked that I would like a HAPPY birthday greeting in my room for my friend’s birthday and got nothing. We finally get to our room, it’s a HUGE crack in the patio door. How do you give someone a room like that. It smelled, the curtains were filthy and the room dirty and dusty. After 3 calls to the front desk and waiting at least an hour someone finally came to our room to take us to another room that was all the way in the back of the resort and on the 3rd floor. Having to wait that long, we missed most of the day which ended up making us miss the pool time. In the new room, The air conditioner didn’t work properly so we had to use the fan the entire stay. The bed has two covers on it, a sheet and a thicker sheet “acting” as a comforter. That first night we ate at the resort, the Asian restaurant was a set menu. It was not good. The service was okay. Food no go. And we love Asian food. The next day we go to breakfast, it’s sub par. Looks like your normal breakfast buffet nothing to special. Did tours in town and that evening got back to the room to head to dinner, The steak place. We walked out. It was our last time eating at the resort. We ended up spending a lot of money eating off of the resort. Food is sub-par. The best thing was the fries and I can eat that at home. For it being an all inclusive resort the food was so sub par. The next day we had a tour to go on and had to go without money or passports etc because the safe in the room would not open. Called the front desk 3 times and they said they would send someone up but no on came. We had to leave empty handed because we were going to miss the tour. We couldn’t buy anything because our money was locked away. It took three more calls, once we got back, for someone to come fix the safe. After that, we had to carry around all of our money, passports, valuables for the rest of the trip which was so inconvenient. One had to watch our wallets, while one went swimming or vise Versa. I’m crying my friend is beyond pissed because her surprise birthday is now ruined. I paid for this vacation and it is an absolute rip off. The hotel room was terrible, the issues, the vacation was just plain terrible. I hope to get a response ASAP. I paid a lot of money and was extremely disappointed! I need some form of compensation ASAP!
