The better half of the Dominican Republic

Lots of people flock to Punta Cana, but for a real Dominican Republic visit with all the bells and whistles of a top notch resort, go to Riu Merengue in Puerta Plata. The scenery is much better - mountains and ocean always in view - the food, service rooms are very nice.

The food was for the most part bland and a repeat of the same stuff. The majority of the staff was friendly. I doubt that I would recommend the D.R. for a vacation destination totally.

NOT QUITE THE HONEYMOON I ENVISIONED
BENITA G.
Jan 21 2016
The hotel was very outdated in comparison to others I have been to in the Dominican Republic. The entire resort was smoking which prompted my husband and I to spend the majority of our honeymoon in our room. As an asthmatic, I cannot be in proximity to smokers. If this was noted on the hotel's website we would have never picked this hotel for our honeymoon. All the rooms had twin beds pushed together even in the suites. There was no ironing board in the room but you could go to the front desk to get a iron for one hour. Free WI-FI consisted of service in hotel lobby for 90 minutes. Lastly, the food options were nothing more than three buffet restaurants, a couple of snack bars, and an "upscale" Italian restaurant accessible by reservation only. Not ideal when it only seats approximately 50 people in a 500+ person resort. Definitely not worth the All-Inclusive price tag. My husband and I were very disappointed with this hotel as it is listed as 5 stars. It should be listed as 2 stars.

Hotel is a little older but very well kept. Staff is outstanding, always willing to help. Complaints about the food about the food are unfounded there is a wide verity of food to select from, salads, cheeses, soups and two or more main dishes. Would recommend especially to new commers to all inclusive travel. Although all inclusive tipping helps you a lot and gives a little more income to hard working Dominicans, who are great people. Try to get into town and see and experience the country. If it wasn't for health issues I would be retired there. A real good place to visit. We been 17 times and plan to go again.

Stay at Riu Mambo

Feb 27 2014
February 25, 2014 Raffaela Di Martino Nobrega 3 Stonefield Court Cortlandt Manor, New York 1067 914-28-3067 To Whom It May Concern: I booked a trip of six days and five nights for my husband and myself in Puerto Plata at the Riu Merengue from February 18TH to the 23rd. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were told by the front desk clerk that our names didn’t appear on the guest list on any of the hotels. I showed him our papers indicating our confirmed reservation at the Merengue. We were made to wait for forty minutes, after which he told us that there was a suite available only at the Riu Mambo. Our suite, 2307, was horrible. There was an awful smell, the television didn’t work, nor did the phone. The blankets had holes in them, and the bathroom wasn’t well-cleaned. I complained to the front desk and we were moved next door to suite 2308. Next door we still had the terrible smell, wires coming out of the outlets, problems with the lamps and television. The smell triggered an allergic reaction in my husband for which we needed to secure medicine. Neither of us could sleep. After complaining a second time were moved again to another suite, 2508. This suite also had electrical problems, holes in the blankets and wrinkled, old mirrors and lamps. Luis from Apple Vacations tried to help us, but I don’t think that he tried hard enough to get us the suite we had paid for. This experience was BEYOND UNACCEPTABLE. Your company had an obligation to provide us with the accommodations for which we paid and for which we had a receipt from you. You failed to do so. Since we were placed at accommodations vastly inferior to those for which we paid-- not to mention the discomfort and inconvenience to which we were put, we expect proper compensation from you. I expect to hear from someone in charge as soon as possible before I take further steps to solve this matter to our satisfaction. Sincerely, Raffaela Di Martino Nobrega

my overall experience with the hotel Riu was jus ok...i have never been to a hotel where i had the fight the bugs when i enter my room ..i had to buy bug spray which was way over priced there. Another thing that deeply disturbed me was there was roches in the food area.and when i told the customer service rep...he did nothing to accomadate nor did he applogize for the incident.and on a seperate occasion the same rep both him and i saw a bird fly into the cafe where breakfast at the time was bein served we both saw the bird land on an open bowl of hunny dip his beak into the hunny then fly off. i asked him was he going to change that..his reply was well its open and birds fly in here all the time and he walked away leaving the bowl of hunny on the table.....Now after all of this that went on my appetite completely went my attitude toward this hotel change and i left a day early....so i checked out on the the 6th losing a day that was paid for...i would not recommend this hotel to any friends r family...but the staff besides that one guy was very friendly....

Not what we expected

First, the entire time, there was NO Apple representative at the hotel to answer our questions. The hotel rooms are in need of update and/or renovations. This was a return trip to the Riu, and our room was very disappointing. Bathroom tub was stained, window was in need of repair and a coat of paint, the mattress was very old, cracks in the closet drywall, and I could go on. Needless to say, the Apple rating is very misleading. We were definitely disappointed in the quality of the hotel compared to the last time we stayed there, which was about three years ago. The hotel manager looked at our room and agreed with us it needed repairs, but if she changed our room, it could be the same as the one we already had. We did look at another room and it was in the same condition, so we stayed where we were and made the best of it. The entertainment staff was wonderful!! The bartenders were great also. I have to say the selection of food had not changed in three years either. That was sort of disappointing also. We stayed 11 days this time and usually had the same variety every day as three years ago. The steak house had great food, but you got the same potatoes and vegetable with everything. Overall, we did enjoy ourselves. What is not to like when you can sit on the beach and just relax. The hotel accommodations and food was much to be desired. Very disappointed we could not talk to an Apple representative.

This resort is Ok if you don't mind: 1. Roaches in your room. 2. Limited menu in the restorants. 3. Only 2 bath towels in the room. 4. Only 1 towel per person at the pool. 5. Pork chops in the restorant, that as hard as Goodyear tire. 6. Electrical outlets in the lobby and in the room that so old, some don't work anymore and a simple task of recharging your cell phone becomes complicated issue. 7. "Enterntainment" that is utilizing guests to put up something on the stage that is pathetic. 8. Air conditioner in the room that sounds like a helicopter. 9. Restorant, where the manager on duty have never heard of Ranch salad dressing. 10. Where 95% of the staff don't speak English. Other than that everything is Ok!

Nothing special!

We arrived at this resort around 9pm to find a very crowded lobby. My husband and I were given an envelope that contained nothing but keys to a room, 2 towel cards and a very small booklet about the resort but contained very little information. We basically found our own way to our room because the gentleman that said he would show us was also showing about 6 other couples and was waiting for them. The room consisted of two double beds pushed together, no artwork on the walls, no coffee machine, no bathroom incidentals, no hair dryer - not even a box of tissues! We never turned on the cold water because the hot water didn't get very hot and the last two days there wasn't any hot water. The toilet worked but about 5 minutes after flushing it made a loud noise that lasted for a few minutes. The air conditioner was sketchy, not the best but worked hard at keeping the room a little cooler than the outside. The overhead fan was the culprit for a few sleepless night as it was very noisy, a good cleaning and oiling would help. I believe that the room had been closed up for some time because it didn't seem to be fresh at all. Housekeeping was just OK, the beds were made every day and the floors were swept. There was never any towel decorations on the beds or anything done to the sheers that I had heard other people talk about. We found the staff friendly enough but perhaps because there is a change of ownership happening they weren't putting out their best effort as we were told some of them would be without a job in a few months. The food was bland, same things in the buffet just about every day. No themes took place as in other resorts we have visited. We went to the Ala Carte restaurant once and had the steak which was just OK, nothing special at all. Six different tables got served at the same time, there was no individual table attention and when we asked for more wine it was like an inconvenience to the staff so we just ate and left. Smoking was intolerable! Seemed like those who smoked were happy they could smoke anywhere on the resort especially in the main lobby area where everyone walks through at one time or another. The pool area was good and usually quiet, lots of loungers to be found which is unusual at most resorts. There was no supervision what so ever, we noticed that a few of the younger teens were diving from rocks that had signage on them warning them against diving, obviously not the fault of the resort that their parents weren't concerned of their safety. The beach was also good and as around the pool there was plenty of loungers to choose from. We brought water shoes with us which was great for walking in the water. If one is prone to getting bugs bites then bring bug repellent, Benedryl and After Bite. My husbands legs were miserable for a few days but I had no bites at all. We will not likely return to this resort for a long time if ever.

Based on the reviews I read on here I had low expectations. I thought the hotel will be horrible and I would have a terrible time. When we arrived we were checked in but had to wait a few minutes for the bell boy to get our bags to our room. I travelled with a big group and requested our room to be close together but they separated us. Luckily for us we asked if we can be closer on the same floor and they changed our rooms. The rooms were out dated but it was decent (really needs an upgrade). The phone in the room didn't work so if we had an issue we had to walk to the reception area to let them know. They didnt change the sheets unless we told them directly. The staff was lovely they were really nice especially the wait staff Maria she was so sweet. You must have patience because of the language barrier but I got to learn a few Spanish words from the staff. The grounds was beautiful spent most of my time in the pool and by the beach. The food was well cooked and lots of variety to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was no snacks in between meals especially when you travel with kids. They get hungry again easily. The entertainment was different every night which was great for the kids and the adults in my group. Overall it's a great resort for the family and we enjoyed our time.

We read the reviews and we thought it will be ok, but it wasn't. How could it have 5, 4 stars ? really? Here is what we experienced: Service: 1 star: they assigned us to a room with broken toilet!!! then they didn't try to fix it until evening, because I said : Where will I pee at night if need it? BTW, they didn't fix it, they moved us to another room. Food: 1 star. People, who left 5,4,3 stars reviews, you really need to visit other hotels, even for the same price. I believe nothing will be worse than this one. They have 2 buffets with exactly the same food in both. Very limited variety, I mean it: beef - one type and not everyday, pork- one type of a meal and not everyday, chicken - one type and every day, fish - one type and every day. We had lamb one day. That's it for animal protein. Vegetables: White potatoes, carrots, rice, - 2 different meals of those repeating every day, like fried potatoes/white rice/cooked carrots - every day, every day. other veggies only: eggplants, zuccinis, once we had asparagus, spinach (not every day) and no other vegetables. Fruits were : melon, watermelon, papaia and passion fruit - and nothing else. Desert was: 2 types of cookies and about 4 types of other deserts. all the food was very much the same every day. sorry, forgot about the soups: 1 or 2 soups per day, that soup will be served until we finish it, like all the other meals. For example, nobody liked minestrone, so we had it for 4 days. Still reading? will give you more now. Restaurants: 1 star: who said there are restaurants? what they do is that they convert the snack-bar to two restaurants by dividing it in the middle in the evening, so one side becomes Italian restaurant and another one is a Steak house. How ... it is? Food there is no good. Also, milk served is only the one made from the powder. I will give you a hint: if you want a real milk go to a bar and ask for a COLD milk, it will be real. Beach: 3 stars- would be the best place of that resort , but...I forgot to say it's a smokers resort - most of the people there smoke, therefore sand is full of cigarettes, not cool. Lot's of shade on the beach because of all the palm trees. The area of shallow waters is quite large and water is warm. Room: 2 stars- shabby, no shampoos, no conditioner (just for me when I didn't bring), one universal liquid soap. One day we didn't have hot water. Tours: do not believe anyone. We went to Paradise Island to snorkel, our tour agent said it's 45 min drive, the hotel said it's 15 min drive, when it was 1.5 hours drive. If I knew I would choose another tour. If I knew I would choose another resort.

RUI Merengue Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic I would like to start off by stating that I am not a novice traveler I have travelled around the world to countries ranging from England, Span, Italy to Cambodia, Thailand, Cuba, and more. But in all my years of travel I have never come across an experience like this. I am thoroughly outraged that I had paid for this experience. Having booked this holiday as a getaway that was not just a couples Easter get away but both of our birthdays I am disappointed (April 1 and April 2). Our names were not on the bus list. Having gotten to the airport in Dominican Republic we were ushered and rounded out to the parking lot of a sea of buses. Where no one was really guiding us and we managed to find our way to the right transport bus. Where we were unpleasantly surprised our names were not on the list. Having to show whatever documentation we had on hand and using data to pull up booking details we were allowed on board. Once on board the experience got worse with people walking up and down the isles not knowing if this were there bus and not finding seats. It took what must have been 2 hours to arrange everything and finally set off to our destination. The ride itself did not have the usual amusing narration but was subpar and more than not being entertaining it was loud and make numerous children cry on the bus. Once at the resort our experience turned far worse. We weren’t guided as to where to go but our luggage unloaded and then left to the mercy of our own understanding of Spanish. The sunwing desk was overloaded. The lineup of guests waiting to be serviced was ridiculous. This was not organized well and numerous individuals were irate and took it out on the staff at the desk, who at this point were the only positive in this so far horrendous experience. Once we were given our envelope and managed to get our bands that was the end of it. We were on our own no one came to escort or carry our bags to the room in this labyrinth of a hotel. Finally out of pure frustration I demanded that someone show me where my room was as I had no idea where to go in this maze. We carried our own bags and weren’t show to the door but gotten part way to the room and pointed in the correct direction. For such self-service I do not understand why this resort is rated at 4.5 star. Once we had finally found our room and opened it, it was hot. Our AC did not work. The bed had stains on it, unlike the one king bed we had asked for we were given two singles. How romantic to celebrate the birthday of two people who are a couple. You may ask, how would the hotel know. At booking it was clearly specified that this was the case. It was meant to be a celebration and a present. However, nothing was done. What was the icing on this horrible cake the phone in the room didn’t work. We were a good 10 minute walk from the main lobby through a maze. So to make any of these complaints we had to walk all the way back to where we came from. Once we had made this complaint it took 3 hours for someone to show up and TRY and fix the AC, he had done something to make the air flow but by no means was it fixed. No one came to change the sheets, and when we asked about the phone nothing could be done. The next day, that’s right I’m only on day 2 of a 5 day trip and this has been my experience so far. I went to the main lobby to inquire about the AC, another complaint was placed but during the rest of the trip no one ever came again. I also indicated the phone system. I was told the whole resort had this problem and someone would be sent. No one was sent, and frankly the whole resort having this problem does not justify forcing clients to walk 10 minutes for every single question or need they may have. The sheets were not changed and I had made it a point to say that April 1 and April 2 are our birthdays could we have something special done. I was wished but nothing further was done, not even a towel arrangement. That is just disgusting. In all the places I have been having made these statements I never been left so un attended to. We returned to the room hoping to stay near the pool when we were informed that we needed towel cards and they should have been located in our welcome package, I assume this was the envelope we received. I had to trek all the way back to the main lobby to inquire about towel cards. I patiently waited in a long line only be to ignored over and over again for Spanish speaking guests until I spoke up and a man who could tell my blood was boiling finally provided me with cards. Why does it take me being disgruntled and irate to obtain service? It appears if you are smiling you are ignored. The service here truly resembles the philosophy that those struggle or pull a stink are the only ones who are paid attention to. As if that wasn’t the only issues, the new sheets we asked for two times now did not arrive. The only positive part of this was the maid who we were able to explain we needed new blankets and got us some. She was helpful and sweet, far less than can be said about the main hotel staff. The restaurant booking. A la Cart has something fishy happening there and I do not mean the food. How is it when I arrived at 7:40 to book a booking it was full??? I have a hard time believing the two times I attempted this that it was not possible. I just gave up after this. The noise. The cliental were horrendous I know this is beyond the hotels control. The individuals in the room across from us had a domestic dispute to the point that it sounded like security finally came at 3 am after 4 hours of yelling. I am relieved they came but having waited 4 hours is unacceptable. The service for the most part if you weren’t Spanish speaking was abysmal especially in the main lobby and staff Complaints go unheard by the main lobby staff Finally being frustrated at the 3rd day I posed a complaint with the sunwing representative, I was very clear on all the above experiences. I was told a complaint was sent to RIU I had no follow up what so ever. For such a beautiful country and a large name and having a 4.5 star rating and promises made during booking this experience was unacceptable, it was more than unacceptable it wasn’t a holiday it ruined our trip and our birthdays with no regard what so ever. I am beyond livid, I am beyond frustrated, I am truly dumbfounded at this experience. I did not know this was possible. I will certainly never book with a RIU again the entire chain at this point is marred to me. This was my first and last. I will never book a sunwing get away again. I am disappointed that the representation had such little regard for an individual’s issue and complaints landed on such deaf ears. I cannot believe any company could treat its customers like this.

Was here before 2 times, Changes not for better experience with a new owners company. Complained about terrible experience at the buffet with serving workers who did not want to clean tables, discussed tourist and make them uncomfortable, make fun of people different origins! Even touch woman in not welcome ways! Management of new Hotel did not respond on my comments online and by phone. Very poor food in a 2 "specialties" restaurants. Cleaning woman Christina clean room that make smells terrible and make me sick for real until I complained and they changed her! Rooms are old and in very poor condition. New company even removed cafe machine from the room ! Very good service in the bars, but very limited drinks. I heard a lot of people complained about negative changes that Riu is going on and a lot of people who came here for years made statements- never again. Workers are more restricted and unhappy and it transfer they upset attitude toward tourists. A lot of people local, from Russia and other places make noise all night every night experience, so be prepare ! Never again!
