The better half of the Dominican Republic

Lots of people flock to Punta Cana, but for a real Dominican Republic visit with all the bells and whistles of a top notch resort, go to Riu Merengue in Puerta Plata. The scenery is much better - mountains and ocean always in view - the food, service rooms are very nice.

The food was for the most part bland and a repeat of the same stuff. The majority of the staff was friendly. I doubt that I would recommend the D.R. for a vacation destination totally.

The hotel was very outdated in comparison to others I have been to in the Dominican Republic. The entire resort was smoking which prompted my husband and I to spend the majority of our honeymoon in our room. As an asthmatic, I cannot be in proximity to smokers. If this was noted on the hotel's website we would have never picked this hotel for our honeymoon. All the rooms had twin beds pushed together even in the suites. There was no ironing board in the room but you could go to the front desk to get a iron for one hour. Free WI-FI consisted of service in hotel lobby for 90 minutes. Lastly, the food options were nothing more than three buffet restaurants, a couple of snack bars, and an "upscale" Italian restaurant accessible by reservation only. Not ideal when it only seats approximately 50 people in a 500+ person resort. Definitely not worth the All-Inclusive price tag. My husband and I were very disappointed with this hotel as it is listed as 5 stars. It should be listed as 2 stars.

I like beach in Riu Meringe in Puerto Plata. There are a lot of trees and palms which they give fantastic shadow and sun was no too strong.

Hotel is a little older but very well kept. Staff is outstanding, always willing to help. Complaints about the food about the food are unfounded there is a wide verity of food to select from, salads, cheeses, soups and two or more main dishes. Would recommend especially to new commers to all inclusive travel. Although all inclusive tipping helps you a lot and gives a little more income to hard working Dominicans, who are great people. Try to get into town and see and experience the country. If it wasn't for health issues I would be retired there. A real good place to visit. We been 17 times and plan to go again.

February 25, 2014 Raffaela Di Martino Nobrega 3 Stonefield Court Cortlandt Manor, New York 1067 914-28-3067 To Whom It May Concern: I booked a trip of six days and five nights for my husband and myself in Puerto Plata at the Riu Merengue from February 18TH to the 23rd. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were told by the front desk clerk that our names didnt appear on the guest list on any of the hotels. I showed him our papers indicating our confirmed reservation at the Merengue. We were made to wait for forty minutes, after which he told us that there was a suite available only at the Riu Mambo. Our suite, 2307, was horrible. There was an awful smell, the television didnt work, nor did the phone. The blankets had holes in them, and the bathroom wasnt well-cleaned. I complained to the front desk and we were moved next door to suite 2308. Next door we still had the terrible smell, wires coming out of the outlets, problems with the lamps and television. The smell triggered an allergic reaction in my husband for which we needed to secure medicine. Neither of us could sleep. After complaining a second time were moved again to another suite, 2508. This suite also had electrical problems, holes in the blankets and wrinkled, old mirrors and lamps. Luis from Apple Vacations tried to help us, but I dont think that he tried hard enough to get us the suite we had paid for. This experience was BEYOND UNACCEPTABLE. Your company had an obligation to provide us with the accommodations for which we paid and for which we had a receipt from you. You failed to do so. Since we were placed at accommodations vastly inferior to those for which we paid-- not to mention the discomfort and inconvenience to which we were put, we expect proper compensation from you. I expect to hear from someone in charge as soon as possible before I take further steps to solve this matter to our satisfaction. Sincerely, Raffaela Di Martino Nobrega

my overall experience with the hotel Riu was jus ok...i have never been to a hotel where i had the fight the bugs when i enter my room ..i had to buy bug spray which was way over priced there. Another thing that deeply disturbed me was there was roches in the food area.and when i told the customer service rep...he did nothing to accomadate nor did he applogize for the incident.and on a seperate occasion the same rep both him and i saw a bird fly into the cafe where breakfast at the time was bein served we both saw the bird land on an open bowl of hunny dip his beak into the hunny then fly off. i asked him was he going to change that..his reply was well its open and birds fly in here all the time and he walked away leaving the bowl of hunny on the table.....Now after all of this that went on my appetite completely went my attitude toward this hotel change and i left a day early....so i checked out on the the 6th losing a day that was paid for...i would not recommend this hotel to any friends r family...but the staff besides that one guy was very friendly....

First, the entire time, there was NO Apple representative at the hotel to answer our questions. The hotel rooms are in need of update and/or renovations. This was a return trip to the Riu, and our room was very disappointing. Bathroom tub was stained, window was in need of repair and a coat of paint, the mattress was very old, cracks in the closet drywall, and I could go on. Needless to say, the Apple rating is very misleading. We were definitely disappointed in the quality of the hotel compared to the last time we stayed there, which was about three years ago. The hotel manager looked at our room and agreed with us it needed repairs, but if she changed our room, it could be the same as the one we already had. We did look at another room and it was in the same condition, so we stayed where we were and made the best of it. The entertainment staff was wonderful!! The bartenders were great also. I have to say the selection of food had not changed in three years either. That was sort of disappointing also. We stayed 11 days this time and usually had the same variety every day as three years ago. The steak house had great food, but you got the same potatoes and vegetable with everything. Overall, we did enjoy ourselves. What is not to like when you can sit on the beach and just relax. The hotel accommodations and food was much to be desired. Very disappointed we could not talk to an Apple representative.

This resort is Ok if you don't mind: 1. Roaches in your room. 2. Limited menu in the restorants. 3. Only 2 bath towels in the room. 4. Only 1 towel per person at the pool. 5. Pork chops in the restorant, that as hard as Goodyear tire. 6. Electrical outlets in the lobby and in the room that so old, some don't work anymore and a simple task of recharging your cell phone becomes complicated issue. 7. "Enterntainment" that is utilizing guests to put up something on the stage that is pathetic. 8. Air conditioner in the room that sounds like a helicopter. 9. Restorant, where the manager on duty have never heard of Ranch salad dressing. 10. Where 95% of the staff don't speak English. Other than that everything is Ok!

This is the third time that I have booked a vacation through Apple and will probably be the last. The last time was much more devastating than this when my reservation for 4 of 14 people was cancelled and I was left standing at the airport counter with an agent who kept telling me there was nothing he could do. This time my room upgrade was not sent by Apple to the hotel, so my ocean view room that I paid for was not available. Again the response from the Apple representative was that there was nothing he could do.

I arrived at the hotel, and all i can say is that i was extremely disappointed in this hotel. The hotel is advertised as a 5 star hotel, yet does not posses the qualities or facilities of a 5 star hotel, perhaps a 3 star rating is more generous. The hotel and rooms were basic, bed, wardrobe, bathroom, and balcony... When you pay the amount you do to stay here you expect a bit more and a lot nicer room. The housekeeping team did however, keep the room clean and well presented as best as they could with the room. The fridge was also kept well stocked. Cannot fault the hotel grounds, the gardens and beach were beautifully kept and the location of the hotel is also beautiful. You're surrounded by a trees and mountains, which is beautiful to wake up to, or lie on the beach and see. The food at the hotel was average, seems to appeal more to the Americans as did a lot of the themes in the hotel... Bars, entertainment, facilities etc... Breakfast was appalling, in terms of hot food the eggs were the only edible food. Don't touch the "bacon", in fact they serve better "bacon" at lunch and dinner which they label as "Pork Chop"... There was a range of cakes, donuts and various other things for breakfast, but again appealing to the Americans... Lunch and dinner however was a lot better and with a greater variety, did get boring after a week though. I would return to Puerto Plata, however not the Merengue.... I do understand Senator will be taking them over at the end of March, so lets hope they bring the much needed improvements and upgrades that the hotel needs. It does have great potential, but many things let the resort down.

just arrived back on the 16th January 2018 what a pure hell hole , most rooms have cracked windows and mould with a smell to them fridge rusty and dirty. internet pathetic have to go to reception lobby for wi fi .swimming pool dirty and you have to dodge dead wasps, cockroaches and flies. beach dirty and sun beds are dirty, never saw anyone washing or cleaning pool area in 2 weeks and I was up everyday at 6am before staff started work as you had to be to reserve table for night at steak house or italian ,as buffet restaurant was a joke food terrible and cold and not enough for everyone ,you can never get a clean table unless you go as soon as it opens and getting someone to clean a table is a joke .Italian is disgusting steakhouse is ok but if you are a big eater don't expect a lot as you get a small sandwich steak and 9/10 wedges. you have to que on a morning from 6 30am to book a table as only 70 places available, even though we were told by tui rep that you did not have to reserve table or you can bribe the man who takes the reservations with dollars and you get booked .rained for 36 hours non stop had no umbrella in room so went to reception to ask for one ,was told house keeper would bring one, went back next day to be told they didn't have any, but hotel staff had plenty walking around nice and dry , It was about 1/2 mile from our room to restaurant by the time you got there you were drenched and had to sit in soaking clothes to eat food, buffet restaurant could hold 650 people at a max ,the staff said there was over 1000 people in and they couldn't cope which was easy to see as they were greatly under staffed . was told by rep you could use sister hotel for food but when you went up you were chased back down to merengue, drinks are cheap and nasty no international brands at all ,entertainment what entertainment it is pathetic also.young people just getting smashed off their heads and fighting ,swearing and being sick everywhere 24 hours of the day I advise any one from uk if you have booked the so called riu merengue please go and change it or get a refund as it is the merengue now and it is terrible the only good thing to come out of this holiday is instead of putting weight on myself and my husband have lost a stone in weight each .This is more like a 2star 18/30 holiday

riu merengue excellent location beautifull beach really clean and tidy lovely friendly staff make you feel special .room clean and fresh well stocked bar for us ,Three pools to choose from . three restaurants to eat from location just metres from beach where you can find water sports swimming snorkelling and plenty of sunbeds to go round .food is plentyfull and varied too .

I won’t go into too much detail as we are currently pursuing a complaint with our tour operator and I really could spend a long time on this review. This hotel is dilapidated and hygiene is poor. We were all ill with stomach trouble. My wife is still very ill a week after getting home. She has now been diagnosed with Shigellosis which is caused by bacteria (Shigella) in human waste. So rare in the UK that neither doctor my wife saw had any experience of it. This is really serious and unacceptable. Our room was awful. Upon arrival we had to clean all the room drawers out before putting our clothes in because they stank. There was no bed for our daughter and despite phoning the front desk and being told to walk down and see them we still had to wait another day and share a bed between 3 after a full day of travelling. Also no water in our minibar upon arrival so had to go back to the front desk for this. Given that you aren’t able to drink the tap water it is basic necessity. The photos attached show the quality and cleanliness of our room and speak for themselves. The buffet restaurant is dreadful, particularly at peak times when it is overcrowded and understaffed. Not enough waiting staff to clear the tables so You would have to sit at a dirty table and wait for it to be set. The hand sanitizer machine at the entrance was empty half the time and most people seemed to walk past and ignore it. Lots of flies and spotted cockroaches a few times too. As for the “speciality” restaurants! There are two of which only one would be open each night and would seat 100 diners. Some nights only one sitting. For our first week there was no booking system so we queued 2 nights running, the second night for 45 minutes only to be turned away both times. Entertainment for kids is next to nothing. During the day the entertainment team seem focussed on the drunk adults at the main pool “the chaos pool” as my daughter called it. Check out the photos of the kids club fencing complete with exposed nails. We’ve never stayed in Dom Rep or a Riu hotel before. After this we won’t be returning to the island or any Riu hotels. We basically felt trapped there. Our best day in 2 weeks was the day we spent out of the hotel at Outback Adventure (which is great). Oh and by the way, avoid Caribbean street too, you basically get hassled to go into the shops and if you are interested in buying they’ll quote you ludicrous prices that are insulting.

Hotel is clean, plenty of drinks, great shows, great food, excellent staff and nice beach. Would recommend to others. It is taking new ownership in April I believe. The only complaint is the a la carte. They only accept 150 in each seating of 2 seatings. There are 1400 people there. You can only register one per day at 7am. You line up and still may not get into a seating.
