Fun Wedding Week
dro1ds, Mississauga, Canada

In November 2018, we spent 1 week here alongside 45 of our closest friends and family for our wedding. Overall, it was a great resort, big enough to cater to everyone (from babies to adults going away to an all inclusive for their very first time). Everything went smooth leading up to the wedding - we met with the staff (Estefania was our lead coordinator with Juan-Jose was her backup) and reviewed the all finer details of the big day which was helpful as everything to-date was planned from Canada. On the day of the wedding the staff was very helpful in keeping things moving along on time and accommodating last minute requests. We got married on the beach at sunset and had the reception in the Flamingo Terrace - the bar tenders there that night were awesome too. The pool area is great for kids and the beach was awesome for body surfing, playing volleyball or tanning. You can often see monkeys and iguanas when walking the beach area. I would also recommend heading down the beach to the left to the Monkey Bar (just follow the signs) - we had a great afternoon eating lunch and watching the monkeys from our table! Overall, the weather was also great. It was hot! There were a few overcast days but it was a nice break from the heat. Collectively however, we all did get a few mosquito bites when on the beach specifically, so I would caution being there around sunset just after the wet season. Lastly, our Sunwing rep, Gill, was awesome! He was super knowledgable and catered to our every need. Would recommend going to him to book your tours or for general advice!

Vacation

Firstly, we have been to Sandals in Jamaica and Eldorado in Mexico as well as Iberostar in Cuba in the last three years and chose the Riu as a last minute vacation. Costa Rica is a beautiful place and couldn’t ask for better weather for our vacation. Negotiating the airport was painless and had a 30 minute bus trip from the airport. Rooms- The room was located on the 5th floor overlooking the jungle and the zip line adventure tour. We were able to see monkeys from our balcony and on more then one occasion heard the monkeys ‘roar’ in the morning. Rooms are a little tired but very clean. Having alcohol set up in a cabinet in the room wasn’t something we used. 3 beers in the fridge and replenished every two days was something we wished they left 4 daily. The shower was ok and always had hot water. The water pressure was sometimes low but you could shower. The cleaning staff did a great job daily. Restaurants- the buffet was very good and large and we could always find something to eat. Not great food but good. The other restaurants you had to line up at 530-545 to have a chance at a seating. Seemed quite weird to pay so much for a trip but have to wait in line to eat in the restaurant. One time we waited in line to have the second seating. Once we got to the front of the line we were asked to step aside and wait once again until the restaurant was filled for the first seating. Perhaps putting names in the second column on the sheet would make sense for the second seating. Beach- The beach is amazing and lots of room to set your lounge chair wherever you want to. The beach vendors approach you about 10 times a day to sell their mugs, trays, dishes or cigars. I think a beach bar would be a nice addition. Nobody comes to the beach to take drink orders. Palapas would be a nice addition to help with shade at the bleach. Shade is a premium on the beach and it is hot! Bars- The bar staff are very nice but do bring some American 1$ with you Service seems to be better with money. The addition of top shelf liquor would be nice and a set payment system at check in. Entertainment- The dancers are great and do a good job; however, the shows need some updating and instead of lip singing, the music should be performed by musicians. As mentioned the dancers do a good job. The resort is very large and very busy with the pool bar being very loud and often very crowded. Pool is very large, but we never had issues with getting a spot on the outer half of the pool area away from the pool bar. All in all a good place for a vacation. Does it rank up there with Sandals or El Dorado no it doesn’t.

Generally good with some minor niggles

First the good. Great beach, amazing staff, and I really enjoyed the fun nightly entertainment shows. The hotel is spacious, spotlessly clean, is tastefully designed and decorated, and there are a wide variety of food options available. However also have a few minor niggles. The food whilst plentiful was sometimes a bit bland and repetitive...particularly in the buffet area. I ended up aiming to go to the speciality restaurants (Chinese, Italian and fine dining) which were better, but also very popular and involved getting in a queue for entry at 1800 by 1745 sharp. Also the hotel accommodates a huge number of guests so could at times feel a bit large and impersonal, and the pool area does get quite noisy and crowded. So I tended to go to the quieter and more laid back beach area. Finally the rooms whilst spotlessly clean, had a rather hard beds / mattresses, and the pillows were not too great either. Also a kettle with tea / coffee making facilities would have been appreciated. Not everyone wants yet more free alcohol from the mini bar once back in their room! So all in all a good stay....although this was also my first time in an all inclusive resort, and whilst the Riu Guanacaste do what they do very well, am also not sure if staying in such a resort is really for me.....I think I personally prefer being in a nice smaller resort based hotel on a B&B or half board basis. Top tips....the Diamente Eco Park with good zip lining for those who are brave enough, which also includes a wonderful animal sanctuary right right next to the hotel. (regular shuttle busses go to entrance from hotel lobby) Also go and have a walk down the beach to get a close look at the friendly white faced monkeys in the woods by the Monkey Beach Bar and Restaurant. You will see lots of Iguanas and lizards on the beach also....plus Racoons at night! Also Coco Beach ($15 return shuttle or $20 return beach water taxi. Journey time half an hour) whilst fairly low key, is worth a visit for a few hours if you fancy escaping the hotel.

Beautiful place to stay. Excellent staff. Great weather.

We stayed at Riu Guanacaste the first week of February and were very happy with our stay. The grounds were beautiful. The staff very attentive and friendly. We did not have one bad experience with the staff. Our hotel room faced the gardens and we enjoyed watching the wildlife including howler monkeys. Our room was comfortable and clean. We really enjoyed the pool and endless sunny days. There are many different spots to chose from around the pool including shady and sunny. The beach was nice however very hot in the afternoon. We did our beach walks in the morning. It was fun watching the monkeys and other wildlife on the beach. The food was good but could be better. This would be my only suggestion for improvement. However we were never hungry and appreciated the steak restaurant. The buffet was good too. Guanacaste is remote however accessible to all kinds of great excursions. We were able to see different parts of Costa Rica, it was a great experience. We decided we would definitely return.

Wonderful resort

We loved the resort. I usually prefer oceanview rooms but we had a view of the zipliners and the daily show of monkeys coming early morning and dinner time it was very entertaining . The staff was amazing and the resort is beautiful . We signed up with a tour through Olympus Tours and used them for a transfer to and from the airport . Our representative Carlos Briceno was very good and went out of his way to help us . Our snorkeling trip was postponed due to mechanical difficulties on the boat and he went out of his way to find us to notify us and make other arrangements . Very clean and beautiful resort.
