We just got back from the resort yesterday. I would say if you don't really care about quality food or alcohol this is the place for you. On the positive side the pools are close to the rooms and there are plenty of them. The kids zone is the best part of the resort. If you are planning on going to the area without kids it does not make much sense to go here. Avoid the steakhouse at all costs. The meat was too think and slimy to cut. The buffet is really only palatable for breakfast. We have been to a number of all inclusive resorts in Mexico so our standards for food and alcohol are not tremendously high but this was sub-par.

Why cant this all inclusive have better than the worst tequila in MEXICO?!

great staff , location , pretty good overall but literally was served the worst tequila I've ever had i think. Great friendly staff , great for kids, loved the beach , kids loved the water slides , I just don't understand cheap'ing out on the TEQUILA so much?

Solid 3.5 stars but Tripadvisor doesn't allow half-stars

Got back January 6th from a week at the Riu Dunamar. I would say it is a solid 3.5-star property. Comfortable, but lacking refinements for sure. The property is definitely off the beaten path. In my opinion, it will be better when the area is further developed, but right now it is isolated with only the 2 Riu properties off on their own. Rooms are nice with new touches as you would expect from a 1-year-old hotel. Good AC, nice balconies, USB ports built right into the wall above the nightstands. Good bathroom w/double sinks and nice shower head. Housekeeping did a nice job in the rooms and all over the grounds. We had "partial oceanview" on the 4th floor (highest floor) which has a great view of the pools and beach. Our rooms were both closer to the beach, which provided a better view, but that meant a long hike from the single bank of 3 elevators that serve all 700 rooms! If you don't like climbing a lot of stairs, you will be constantly walking all the way back to the lobby to get the elevator and then all the way back toward the beach once you get to your floor. Food was very inconsistent. The buffet was edible for breakfast only. Lunch and dinner at the buffet were not good at all. Food was either cold, overcooked, dry, or all of the above. The specialty restaurants were the best choice for dinners. We ate at the Asian restaurant twice, the Italian restaurant twice and the upscale "Kulinarium" once. All three were good (not great) but worlds better than the buffet. Restaurant service was friendly and excellent across the board. The pool grill served really good chicken but they didn't have it every day. They also had some disgusting (my opinion) "burgers" (frozen meat patties) and hot dogs. If you wanted a cheeseburger, you either had to ladle cold nacho cheese on your meat patty or unwrap your own individually-wrapped "cheese slice" (the kind we had before grocery stores built real deli counters)! The sports bar food was pretty gross as well. Stale nacho chips with cold cheese sauce, some old looking hot dogs on rollers and a fridge full of pre-packaged salads and sandwiches. The 5 Pools are nice. Rarely did it feel too crowded in the water. 2 of them have swim-up bars. Service is good and drinks are OK. Other resorts (AI and non-AI) we've gone to all had better quality drinks and a more diverse selection, IMO. The beach has luxurious sand and plenty of loungers if you get there by about 10am. The only shade is from palm trees that are planted along the length of the beach. We thought it was adequate. We ended up splitting our time between the beach and pool. The water was rough on some days but generally nice to swim in. A couple days had fairly heavy seaweed in the water and other days had practically none. Regardless, the water is beautiful to look at, but once you get in the ocean, it is NOT the clear water it appears to be from a distance. I'll take the ocean quality in Negril, Aruba, Grand Cayman or St. John any day over Costa Mujeres. We took our kids (18 & 12) and they were fine, but there are LOTS of kiddies, tweens and teens running around this resort. Possibly because it was a vacation week from schools. If my wife and I had come here for an adults vacation, we would have been very unhappy, so beware if you are planning a romantic getaway. Finally, this is in no way a negative, but the Americans were far outnumbered by the nice guests from Canada, Europe and South America. I rather enjoyed the diversity and people watching. So in summation, we had a really good family vacation and the Riu Dunamar is an affordable choice, but don't expect more than 3.5 stars.

To whom it may concern: I was given this email address to formally place a written complaint against Riu Dunamar in Costa Mujeres, Quintana Roo. Upon our arrival on December 25th I noticed we did not have any sheets, and cover for the pull out sofa bed. I called reception and was told they apologized, but there were none available at the time. The treatment at the bar areas, and restaurant was literally none existent, this due to the staff being to worried about taking care of the foreigners, rather than taking care of their own (I am Mexican). We had to wait 10-20 minutes to get a drink, and we will be skipped after we had requested a service at the buffet area first (keep in mind that we always tipped them). I was not going to place a complain until my 2 year old got sick on Friday December 28th, and the doctor never came to the room. As we were having breakfast that morning, we noticed out 2 year old was not acting normal, and started throwing up. We immediately came to the the room, and took his temperature which was at 103 F. I called reception about 10am to get information about a doctor, they informed me that the consultation charge will be $120, which I agreed to pay (my son has gotten convulsions due to fevers in the past) I did not want to leave the room to the high temperatures, and have my son get convulsions again. We waited about and an hour and half, and the doctor never came. I called reception again, and was told to come down to the clinic (which I did) to notice there were other patients, and the doctor nowhere to be found. After a little bit over 2 hours, we decided to take our son to Cancun, with a temperature of 103 F, risking him getting convulsions, and ending up in ER. I would like to share within these 2 hours we tried everything to bring the fever down (Tylenol, cold shower, wet towels) NOTHING was working. Once in Cancun, the doctor that was able to treat my son told us he had a respiratory infection, that was treated with 3 shots of antibiotic (we had to drive every time time back to Cancun to get them). On Saturday, I came down to the lobby, and spoke to Valeria the assistant manager in charge, and told her everything I’ve just written. She apologized, asked for the room number FINALLY sent the cover to the pull-out bed (2 days prior to our departure) and offered room service for our son which we never used, and told me she was going to check why the doctor never came, but I never received an answer. As far as the treatment from the staff goes, I requested a drink after a 10-15 minute wait on Sunday December 30th, and the waiter started arguing with me saying he had to take care of other people first, people that got to the bar after me. As I told the assistant manager, I am very upset; end of the day we all pay the same amount, and deserve the same treatment regardless the nationality. ****response from their corporate was tu submit complaint thru booking agency, which I did, and have not received any answers yet!****
