This hotel is very clean and bright. A bit dated in the lobby and rooms maybe. Lobby is very warm all the time, and the elevators are slow and NO AC in them. The pool is huge and very nice and clean, activities from 9am to 5 pm daily. My friend and I did the water aerobics daily and was a lot of fun! The beach is beautiful as id the water. Not a huge beach but big enough. Water sports on site. Booked to excursions with the Apple Rep in the lobby Candelario Martinez, awesome guy!!! He was not pushy at all, we wanted to do a dolphin swim and a snorkel trip. He recommended the Dreams Dolphin swim $150 with 50 min in the water and a foot push at the end by the dolphins, AWESOME!!! There were 6 of us, 4- 20-24 yr. olds and 2 47 yr. olds. It was incredible, everyone loved it and it was a private group with just us. We also did a catamaran ride and snorkel trip all day($55) that was so much fun. we all had a great time and would return again. Transfers to and from airport were quick and drivers very nice. Rode the bus system in front of hotel, hang on!!!

Rooms are updated and very clean. Bar service is very fast and friendly. Front desk is much more helpfull than many other resorts I have stayed at. Overall the hotel was nice, but the elevators were filthy, the beds were unbelievably hard. Also we were led to believe that there were 5 restaurants, 3 that we could make reservations to. Well they are all buffets except one and you couldn't ever get a reservation for it. .. More>

The 2 buffets at the hotel were excellent - menus varied and lots of selections. The 3 restaurants require reservations - there is a small block of availability. I wouldn't recommend either the Mexican or the Oriental - your entree selection at the Mexican restaurant is limited which is the only .. More>

I wouldn't recommend either the Mexican or the Oriental - your entree selection at the Mexican restaurant is limited which is the only party of your meal which is served at table. Everything else is buffet style. The Oriental restaurant is all buffet - no service. I would recommend the steak house - full table service. The only issue is that your soup, salad, and sides are the same no matter your entree. Poolside service is spotty, although all the staff is friendly and very helpful. Grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There is sufficient beach access and accommodation. All in all, a good vacation.

I found the hotel to be of good quality, service, and clean. The food was decent considering it was mostly all buffet style. I have to say the 24 hour sports bar is a poor excuse for a bar. I found the hotel to be of good quality, service, and clean. The food was decent considering it was mostly all buffet style. I have to say the 24 hour sports bar is a poor excuse for a bar. The snacks were chips with cheese, the equipment to play games was broken, and there was no music. There is actually no music anywhere in the hotel. If you want to stay up later and drink/hang out you will need to go outside of the hotel. Their nightly show was pretty bad as well. Also we had a bad strom one night and our room (on the end) flooded near the windows and doors. Wouldn't have been a big deal however one of our bags was on the floor so it and all of its contents (including books and clothing)was ruined. Our luggage was also on the floor and got wet but luckily it dried out. We told the staff who in turn said it had happened before. They offered us nothing to compensate for the clothing and book that were ruined.

It was actually an upgrade, however, how can they not have your room available when you book FOUR months in advance? Being switched to different hotel upon arrival took 2 hours out of our vacation time, not to mention you are just thrilled to land and arrive and have to deal with that....other than .. More>

Some of the staff could be a little friendlier, but all in all, good stay.

I would recommend this place to anyone. I would love to come back next year.

Just returned from a family vacation at the Riu Caribe and was overall pleased with the experience, however, the hotel was a real disappointment. First the good - the food was excellent! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, all first-rate and plenty of it! Also, the hotel employees - all very friendly and all tried very hard to make out stay as enjoyable as possible. They always smiled, checked on us to make sure we had what we needed and went the extra mile when we had concerns or questions. They were the best part. The outdoor amenities were also very, very good. The grounds were impeccably kept, the pool was clean (for the most part) and warm, the outdoor dining and bar services were also maintained and staffed very well. We never had to wait long for anything. The beach was clean and the water was clear. Why won't we return? There were several trouble spots that caused an equal amount of grief. Firstly, recent rains had knocked-out half of the facility elevators, making everyone use the ones on one side. This caused an overload of service and an extended wait that frustrated everyone. This was compounded by the fact that guests would frequently push the "up" and "down" buttons in an attempt to get an elevator to arrive. This caused more trouble by the fact that when the elevator went the other direction, now, it would stop on EVERY floor, further delaying its arrival to the requested floor and enraging those who needed it (I had a recent knee injury that made taking the stairs impossible). Elevators aside, there are two more major problems that I found off-putting. The second was the heat - the lobby, halls and elevators all had no A/C. Because of the open plan of the building, I guess it was the idea that moving air would help keep things cool, but in practical application, this was a real problem. Combined with the humidity of the ocean, we found ourselves bathed in sweat after just minutes after leaving the room (which also never seemed to get cool enough). The heat was a constant irritant from which we couldn't escape. Outside, it was fine, inside, however, with no moving air, it was oppressive, at best. The third issue I had with the facility, somewhat ties-in with the second. The Wi-Fi access, for lack of a better term, really sucked. Unless you want to pay an outrageous price for their premium access, we were only allowed 90 minutes a day, on a server that wouldn't pass most of our email accounts. Only email running through an exchange server seemed to work - AOL, Yahoo, G-Mail were all a no-go. Needless to say that when we returned to the states, there were almost four-hundred emails that had to be sifted-through by the adults in my group. The worst thing about the Wi-Fi was that it was only available in the lobby. Remember the heat, humidity and the stagnant air? Even if you were dressed very lightly, the vinyl cushions on the seats would quickly turn themselves into yucky slippery messes in which we all had to sit. Because of the limited access, often there would be dozens of people, all trying to get out on the internet at any given moment. What did that do to the speed? You figure it out. As a business manager, I found this unacceptable and one of the three top curses of this facility. Go to the Hard Rock hotel - no Wi-Fi limitations, fast elevators (more than three) and air-conditioning everywhere under the roof. Sure, there were other issues with the place - the renovation was apparently concentrated to the lobby and common areas, as the room got only a coat of paint and a very small TV. The hard surfaces everywhere made any noise echo like an explosion in the grand canyon. If you aren't a party person, I would recommend avoiding any room in the first five floors in the central section of the hotel. The concerts they held almost every night made restful sleep unattainable (I slept with earplugs). the smell of sewage in our bathroom was frequent and pungent. The toilet, once flushed, wouldn't stop running until we opened top and fixed the flapper - do you think the kids fixed this? No, they would flush, leave and we would find it loudly running hours later. Unless the patio door was FULLY closed, the air-conditioning wouldn't run - a fact they neglected to tell us and one we discovered only on the third day. Some previous repairs were painted over (badly) and I didn't know that anyone made such cheap toilet paper. The painted chandeliers in the Albatross were tacky and didn't fit the renovated theme and they used white, fluorescent bulbs that put-off an unnatural light. Otherwise, the trip was enjoyable. If we come back to Cancun, in spite of the excellent staff, we won't be staying here.

What I disliked: having to wear bracelet all week, loud noise until 2 am from hotel next door so that it made it difficult to sleep, beds were full size not queen hard for 2 adults and 2 teens and a preteen though they brought a cot upon request right away, hard beds but 3-4 pillows helped having to trade a card for towels, no loungers in the shade unless you get up at 6 am to "save" one with your towel, having to make reservations for the specialty restaurants, watered down drinks, ELEVATORS 3 out of 6 not working, 3 that are working, you ride up and down the sweat box for 10 minutes before they stop on your floor. Food was okay, the restaurants were buffet not a la cart except for steak restaurant, it was the best of the 3. I believe I was spoiled by stay at NOW Jade last October. Next time we will pay the extra. Overall, we did not allow any of these issues to ruin our vacation just really enjoy the extra pampering at NOW Jade. Depends what you are looking for.....

I have stayed at many hotels here in Cancun and always avoided the beach because of the waves. The RIU CARIBE is situated in a perfect location and we spend most of the days in the ocean at this hotel, we did not even go into the pools which by the way were amazing, if you have small kids its just perfect calm water, no rocks and no crazy waves, my kids are teen agers and they spend a very relaxing 4 days. The food is nothing to complain about, we were constantly eating to our hearts content, the rooms are beautiful, showers had plenty of water pressure, toilets worked just fine, A/C worked great, we choose the stairs because the elevators were super slow and we were on the third floor so it was not a big deal. We arrived early so we had to wait for our rooms but I was expecting this, we changed our clothes and had our bracelets to start enjoying the facilities. The lobby is super hot with no relief from the heat. There was no more reservations for the specialty food restaurants which we didnt mind after looking at the menus. the Gaviotas snack bar is full of good food to choose from, and a nice bar by the pool, all the drunks hang out by this pool so we avoided that. This was the best hotel I have enjoyed staying at, we did not leave the premises at all because we were content and happy. We booked 2 rooms next to each other me and my daughter in one my husband and 17 yr. son in the other. will love to go back. The nicer buffet area had breakfast lunch and dinners and was outstanding I tasted lamb, duck, and many other foods there. There is coffee at all hours in the lobby. Something for everyone.

I just got back from Cancun Mexico a week ago and I stayed at the RIU Caribe. After reading many reviews for the past several months I can agree and disagree with the statements posted. First check in was a breeze and Nico the bellman was awesome. The room was just like the pictures and the front desk upgraded me to an ocean view. The elevators did break down and was not repaired, why I have no idea however I'm glad I opted for the 5th floor and not the 8th. The food selection was the same each night with a few added selections there is something for everyone vegans and those who don't eat pork or beef such as myself. I highly recommend eating at the restaurants, I ate at each one with the exception of the steak house. The shows were a tad bit boring but the staff goes above and beyond in performing for you, therefore you try to be pay attention. The resort is small and the location is away from the nightlife and shopping but for a first timer I was pleased. From the bartenders to the staff they go out of there way to make sure you are pleased and your vacation is memorable. Upon my return to Cancun I will not stay at this resort because of its location however I am an RIU fan for life.
