I was celebrating my 40th birthday and this trip ruined it. When I arrived at the RIU Caribe we were told that we were getting upgraded to RIU Palace Peninsula and that was fine. We could not get in our room when we arrived. The first night we went to the Japanese restaurant and I was given fish after I stated numerous times that I am allergic. I vomited all over the lobby floor. All of the resturants had poor service and not so great food. Everyday I had to go to the front desk because hey kept giving us a room key that did not work. The apple reps on duty was not attentive. I wanted to go on the pirate ship. I had to wait on the rep for 45 minutes to assist me. I had to confirm my transportation for my departure everyday. I had to order Dominos pizza. This trip was very disappointing. I cried in my room. I will never recommend apple for vacations. This was one of the worst experiences I ever had. I know I'm leaving some things out. Overall my 40th birthday was a nightmare and I was very disappointed.

Service, especially dining service, was excellent! Surprisingly, bathroom had no tub, which was an inconvenience. Frosted window in bathroom was a bit unusual. Overall, excellent hotel.

Poor Stay at the Riu Caribe
JAMIE A.
Sep 14 2017
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as our stay was very unpleasant. Check-in was about 35 minutes late and when we were finally given our rooms, one of the rooms smelled like sewage and it was dirty. We complained about the smell and a technician tried to fix it, but the smell remained. The other room had an issue with the AC and one of the dresser drawers wouldn't open. The furniture seemed to be really run down in both rooms and to be honest, the only thing positive about the rooms were the partial ocean views. The alcohol bar in one of the rooms also had a slight issue dispensing. The dispenser seemed stuck (maybe because it was sticky from previous uses but that eluded to the idea that it hadn't be cleaned thoroughly.) The food at the resort was not good at all - specifically the buffets. We understand that buffets are made to appeal to a large amount of people but in some instances, we could not cut/chew through some of the meats - even when tried to use a knife or our bare hands. The food was either too tough, soggy, dry, or simply just not good - leaving us to think that it had been left out for too long and not replenished with new trays frequently enough. The hotel also did not provide common toiletries that you'd find at any other hotel/resort. Each room was given only one bar of hand soap and the showers included a shampoo dispenser. The shampoo smelled like metal and had a strange texture to it. When we tried to complain about our rooms and the poor service we received, the manager attempted to rectify the situation by moving us to a sister property. However, she wanted to charged each person $50 USD per night. For the negative experience we already received, their solution to our issue was an added inconvenience. The bars were decent and the pool and beach were beautiful - no complaints regarding that. Additionally, we kept getting kicked off of the WiFi and had to go down to the front desk each time this happened. Based on reviews, we thought we were staying at a 4.5 star resort and it felt more like a 2 star resort. We were a group of 4 people with two rooms and each person had multiple complaints. This is unacceptable.

2nd time at Riu Caribe

Got to hotel about 8a.m. could not check in which me and the 2 other couples I went on this trip with knew we would not be able to since it was very early. Hotel told us that our 3 rooms would be ready as soon as they could so no problem we left our luggage and went to Isla Mujeres for the day. Upon getting back to the hotel about 6pm our rooms were ready. Myself and the 2 other couples went to our rooms and all 3 of our rooms had two beds instead of 1 bed. The hotel was aware that the rooms would be occupied with 1 couple in each(husband and wife)so I don't know why they did not give us all rooms with one bed especially since we were at the hotel since 8a.m. and first on the list for check in that day. The hotel should of gave us priority in getting rooms with one bed but they didn't so after a long day that included red eye travel we had to hassle with this room situation instead of being able to settle in for our 5 night stay. None of us were happy campers and after finally speaking with the manager Karen we were told we would have rooms with one bed but that still could not be done until the following day. This is my 5th stay at a Riu and never had any issues until this time. I like the Rius but after this incident I am STRONGLY considering staying at a different resort the next time I go to Cancun.

The hotel entertainment staff was excellent and very enjoyable. My daughter and I had a great time. The only negative comments I have would be the hard bed and the lack of air conditioning in the hotel.

I have been going to Mexico for four years now. I love everything about Mexico. Riu Caribe is the worst hotel that I have stayed at so far. I do not know where to begin. The food was repeated every night and it was tasteless. I went two or three days without eating lunch or dinner. The main pool was literally sauna inside and it was so miserable to be in. The pool was very dirty as well. There was crumbs and hair everywhere. The only good thing about this hotel was the beach and the staff. The staff work so hard and deserve every tip they receive, besides House keeping. House keeping would wake us up around nine to clean our room. They did an okay job but they never made us a new design with their towels. I know that sounds kind of childish but its fun to walk into a clean room and see the amazing bed designs they put together. We tipped her anyways. The room was a decent size. One night I found two huge cock roaches in the bathroom. It was disgusting. I will never be returning to Riu Caribe and I definitely will not recommend anybody to go there.

My wife and I arrived 3 hours before official check in time My wife and I arrived approximately 2 1/2 hours before official check in time, the person at the desk was very accommodating and found us a wonderful room on the sixth floor in the junior suite with a king size bed that we had ordered, he let us check in early . This was wonderful and we were able to start our vacation the right way! The hotel staff in every way is exceptional, there is a good variety of things to choose from to eat, the entertainment by the staff is very good they try very hard to put on a good show every night and in the lobby they have area artists with exceptional musical talent. Clean, well staff and a very engaging entertainment during the day by the pool, or you can go to the quiet pool which is great too! Overall the sand in the beach our picture postcard perfect. We would definitely stay there again!

I could spend all day writing a review about this place and how amazing it is.. Everything about it is fantastic, to the location, decor, food and staff... Myself, partner my mum and her husband spent 2 weeks here from the 12th of September... this is our 3rd time visiting this hotel and yes I would come back again in a heart beat... the rooms are lovely, spacious and very clean... cleaners clean then everyday and do a fantastic job, from the animal art on the bed to the wee chocolates, they go that extra mile and it’s the littles things and really does put a wee smile on your face when you see it... fridge gets stocked up every 2 days, if you do need more tho phone reception and it’s not a problem... make sure to leave cleaners and bar man a wee tip, they don’t get anything and really do work hard... especially the cleaners as on several occasions I went into public toilets and they were left in some state, not down to cleaners as they were constantly in and out cleaning them but the adults that clearly didn’t know how to flush the plug or wash their hands! Pool are is amazing, can sit at quiet pool if you want peace or the big pool if you want to see the entertainment.... entertainment staff will ask if you want to join in but you don’t need to if you don’t want to and it is very good fun to watch everyone else... only thing I would say about entertainment this year as it wasn’t as good as previous years and I really did miss the riu dance, sad I know lol... however the entertainment team, work amazingly hard, very long hours.... food is very good, always find something to eat even if you are a fussy eater... waiter/waitresses are excellent, Elga, her sister cela, Eva and Hugo to name a few... love the sports bar, franky and Vicente are amazing! Lovely guys, nothing is to much for them and they are excellent company! Franky shots are the best! Love the sports bar! You can get a bus right out the hotel, straight to cancun or downtown and it’s very cheap! So basically what I’m trying to say is this place is amazing! Love everything about it... can’t wait till my next visit next year....

Our family went to a wedding to this resort from September 4 to the 10th.. we got to this hotel around 10:30 am, we approach the front desk and this agent male that didn’t look happy at all.. brunette, kind of long black hair, anyways didn’t look happy, maybe he was doing an overnight , he started to check us in but then we ended up check in with Andrea who check us in all 7 of us. She is so very helpful . Thanks Andrea for the ocean view upgrade. The next day the rest of the family were coming and my brother and his wife booking was cancelled, apparently by us which that was not the case, my sister in law who made all the booking kept all the emails from their Reservation agent. At first they wanted to give my brother a regular rate even though his booking was done weeks ago with special group rate . Anyways, Rene who is the manager who is very pleasant and helpful sent my sisters emails back to Riu Reservation to show them that we didn’t cancel any booking. So, Rene fixed the problem, great job Rene. The resort is nice, and clean. It has 4 swimming pools, too much chlorine in the pools I would say , it has 5 or 6 restaurants, the food is good, just don’t deal with Mr cesar who I think it’s a manager for the restaurants, we once wanted to have dinner by the pool restaurant and that night you didn’t need a reservation. We told him we were 11 and he said there was not table for 11 and that we have to wait more than a hour. we said we didn’t need to seat together since we saw empty tables for 4. Basically he said no and during our stay here, he was never approachable. The rooms are also clean and fair size. Much thanks to lady who kept our rooms nice and clean The beach is ok, not too big and it has some seaweed but they go most mornings to remove it . It does need more shades in the beach area .. Alcoholic drinks are in most cases ok , nothing fancy I would say.. beer only one kind I saw (xxx beer) nothing like Corona or tekate. Entertainment in the theatre for most of the nights was excellent we did enjoyed . To be fair the resort has its up and down but I would definitely stay here again

Amazing hotel, amazing food and excellent service for my wedding from start to finish! I don't normally do reviews but one person who looked after us made me and my family feel so happy and welcome that I have to. We have just got back from a two week holiday which includes my wedding and the hotel were fabulous! Obviously some things could be improved but the positives outweighed the negative. Only thing I would say need improvement is reception staff at times were abit rude..especially when me (the bride) and groom were given had the smallest room incorrectly with a child out of a group of 30 and one person said I needed to pay for an upgrade but the next lady realised I was getting married and changed our room for free - the group allocation should be better organised. Hotel upgrade would improve as Riu cancun was very modern but to busy! Best parts of our holiday!! Amazing - Joe the waiter who works in the steak house. Hurricane Nate was the night before my wedding and he couldn't reassures me enough! He was adorable Laura - my amazing wedding coordinator! So attentive and always available! Highly recommended Rosie hair stylist - she did an amazing job with my hair ❤️ Last but not least and the man who we all loved! Israel the bar tender! He walked with a smile from start to finished "tequila tequila woop woop" we loved him! He got my family of 28 all saying the phrase including other bar staff! He needs a pay rise of needs to be in the entertainment group! I'd come again in a second! I'd definitely improve on the entertainment on a night tho...round tables rather than show seats as it stops the atmosphere! But 10/10 for you all thank you

I travelled here with my partner in December 2016, bit late on review ino but better late than never. I cannot wait to get Mexico booked again. I was worried that the weather wouldn't have been as good as hoped but for the 2 weeks we were there it was brilliant only 1 stormy day and the rest was perfect between 25-30oc. The hotel it's self is good I wouldn't say very good or excellent it's more the experience makes it. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, when at the beach we were never with out a cocktail or drink. The waiter was a lovely guy who didn't see any job to hard. The beach was so clean and once the sun went down you could see how hard every one worked to make sure it was cleaner to a high standard. The rooms where modern and cleaned every day, nice fresh sheets and floors cleaned. The maids even left sweets every so often, we requested more beer and come as we didn't want tonic in our fridge and they did exactly that. We had an amazing view of the sea and beach from our balcony. Reps where so helpful in the hotel we were able to book all our excursions, couldn't have been easier. If your wanting an amazing day out go to XPLOR, was the best day out of the whole holiday. The food in the hotel for lunch and breakfast I couldn't had faulted there was always something to eat and was fresh. The dinners weren't as good and as you can imagine after two weeks started to get boring so if you want to break it up travel to lorenzelos in Cancun it is soooo tasty. It is a bit pricey but worth every penny especially if you love your seafood or steak. we spent most of our time on the beach so couldn't comment on the pool area or entertainment. You can hire jet skis right on the beach or go out on the boat tours or scuba diving from the same beach. Overall I would return to this hotel but if I could find some where that did better dinners I would choose there first just to make sure I get the full package.

Just got back from a great time at the Caribe, The hotel IMO is a little tired but nevertheless we all had a great time, Room.....on th 9th floor as requested with superb views over the pool towards La Isla de Mujeres, Food....very good if a touch repetitive, steak house was very good, Shangrila we didn't really enjoy TBH, Mexican was also good. Entertainment....The staff are extremely hard working and very pleasant, they are on the go all day and deserve a huge pat on the back for their efforts. Waiters......The guys around the pool are also very hardworking and kept us topped up with drinks all day, a special mention to Alex, Israyel (whoop whoop) fantastic job lads well done, Restaurant staff....excellent, Hugo, Eva, Elda & Celia especially superb, nothing was to much trouble for them. Many thanks. Beach & Pool.....Again very good, no fighting for sun beds, beach absolutely beautiful. Trips....We went to La Isla Mujeres, speed boats & Coco Bongo, all excellent and you must try them. The staff (Jose) for booking the trips were great and very helpful and not pushy.. Overall a very good experience for us all. 👍
