Riu Palace Restaurants

First time to Cancun. First time at a Riu. While the restaurants do not require reservations, they have do not have menus, except for the steakhouse. They are buffet service as well and preset menus, which was disappointing. We also found that that none of them had selection for vegetarians. The main buffet did have a small special sections for vegetarians, and other sections that seemed to have veg options. We did not tip at the main buffet (as this was supposed to an all inclusive paid vacations, tips included - I specifically asked to make sure what I knew what was expected of us once there ), we noticed that some waiters ignored us the next time we were there. Be aware the bathtubs is located out in the open room, and only the shower stall has a door (the toilet is separate and has a door). Not a big inconvenience since it was mom and daughters but not the greatest setup. The cousins that shared a room made it work. Overall a very nice place.

I was celebrating my 40th birthday and this trip ruined it. When I arrived at the RIU Caribe we were told that we were getting upgraded to RIU Palace Peninsula and that was fine. We could not get in our room when we arrived. The first night we went to the Japanese restaurant and I was given fish after I stated numerous times that I am allergic. I vomited all over the lobby floor. All of the resturants had poor service and not so great food. Everyday I had to go to the front desk because hey kept giving us a room key that did not work. The apple reps on duty was not attentive. I wanted to go on the pirate ship. I had to wait on the rep for 45 minutes to assist me. I had to confirm my transportation for my departure everyday. I had to order Dominos pizza. This trip was very disappointing. I cried in my room. I will never recommend apple for vacations. This was one of the worst experiences I ever had. I know I'm leaving some things out. Overall my 40th birthday was a nightmare and I was very disappointed.

Service, especially dining service, was excellent! Surprisingly, bathroom had no tub, which was an inconvenience. Frosted window in bathroom was a bit unusual. Overall, excellent hotel.

Poor Stay at the Riu Caribe
JAMIE A.
Sep 14 2017
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as our stay was very unpleasant. Check-in was about 35 minutes late and when we were finally given our rooms, one of the rooms smelled like sewage and it was dirty. We complained about the smell and a technician tried to fix it, but the smell remained. The other room had an issue with the AC and one of the dresser drawers wouldn't open. The furniture seemed to be really run down in both rooms and to be honest, the only thing positive about the rooms were the partial ocean views. The alcohol bar in one of the rooms also had a slight issue dispensing. The dispenser seemed stuck (maybe because it was sticky from previous uses but that eluded to the idea that it hadn't be cleaned thoroughly.) The food at the resort was not good at all - specifically the buffets. We understand that buffets are made to appeal to a large amount of people but in some instances, we could not cut/chew through some of the meats - even when tried to use a knife or our bare hands. The food was either too tough, soggy, dry, or simply just not good - leaving us to think that it had been left out for too long and not replenished with new trays frequently enough. The hotel also did not provide common toiletries that you'd find at any other hotel/resort. Each room was given only one bar of hand soap and the showers included a shampoo dispenser. The shampoo smelled like metal and had a strange texture to it. When we tried to complain about our rooms and the poor service we received, the manager attempted to rectify the situation by moving us to a sister property. However, she wanted to charged each person $50 USD per night. For the negative experience we already received, their solution to our issue was an added inconvenience. The bars were decent and the pool and beach were beautiful - no complaints regarding that. Additionally, we kept getting kicked off of the WiFi and had to go down to the front desk each time this happened. Based on reviews, we thought we were staying at a 4.5 star resort and it felt more like a 2 star resort. We were a group of 4 people with two rooms and each person had multiple complaints. This is unacceptable.

2nd time at Riu Caribe

Got to hotel about 8a.m. could not check in which me and the 2 other couples I went on this trip with knew we would not be able to since it was very early. Hotel told us that our 3 rooms would be ready as soon as they could so no problem we left our luggage and went to Isla Mujeres for the day. Upon getting back to the hotel about 6pm our rooms were ready. Myself and the 2 other couples went to our rooms and all 3 of our rooms had two beds instead of 1 bed. The hotel was aware that the rooms would be occupied with 1 couple in each(husband and wife)so I don't know why they did not give us all rooms with one bed especially since we were at the hotel since 8a.m. and first on the list for check in that day. The hotel should of gave us priority in getting rooms with one bed but they didn't so after a long day that included red eye travel we had to hassle with this room situation instead of being able to settle in for our 5 night stay. None of us were happy campers and after finally speaking with the manager Karen we were told we would have rooms with one bed but that still could not be done until the following day. This is my 5th stay at a Riu and never had any issues until this time. I like the Rius but after this incident I am STRONGLY considering staying at a different resort the next time I go to Cancun.

The hotel entertainment staff was excellent and very enjoyable. My daughter and I had a great time. The only negative comments I have would be the hard bed and the lack of air conditioning in the hotel.

I have been going to Mexico for four years now. I love everything about Mexico. Riu Caribe is the worst hotel that I have stayed at so far. I do not know where to begin. The food was repeated every night and it was tasteless. I went two or three days without eating lunch or dinner. The main pool was literally sauna inside and it was so miserable to be in. The pool was very dirty as well. There was crumbs and hair everywhere. The only good thing about this hotel was the beach and the staff. The staff work so hard and deserve every tip they receive, besides House keeping. House keeping would wake us up around nine to clean our room. They did an okay job but they never made us a new design with their towels. I know that sounds kind of childish but its fun to walk into a clean room and see the amazing bed designs they put together. We tipped her anyways. The room was a decent size. One night I found two huge cock roaches in the bathroom. It was disgusting. I will never be returning to Riu Caribe and I definitely will not recommend anybody to go there.

Fabulous hotel

Just home from the Riu Caribe. This was one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in. All staff deserve praise for their service and cheerfulness. We only ever see the ‘out-front’ staff, but the hotel was always clean, tidy and catered for our every need so I would like to thank all the ‘behind the scenes’ staff too – the kitchen staff, cleaners, gardeners & pool maintenance. They work so hard, go to so much effort and work long hours. Check-in was quick and efficient. The entertainment team were great and there was always something going on around the pool, plus activities – water aerobics etc. It rained once and they had ingenious ideas to keep us entertained. Evening shows – my favourite was the 'Rock Station' – I thought this was put together really well by the staff, and I loved the music! Beach party was also a good night! The food, drinks, cocktail menu, were all fabulous. With three restaurants (steak, Asian and Mexican), plus the buffet, there was always something different to eat, and it was delicious. At lunch times, we had a BBQ some days by the pool, plus there is a pizza restaurant. No one can possibly go hungry here! Optics in the room, and a well-stocked drinks fridge also a bonus. Thanks to Joel in the steak restaurant for his service. The pool was clean and huge, with a swim up bar. Bar staff working non-stop with so much attention to detail, plus waiter service around the pool was great. There was a separate children’s pool and a relaxing pool – although not so relaxing on foam party afternoon!! This was awesome – for all ages! Great fun with the Coco Bongo's dancers. The beach is also really nice here, with lots of palm trees. We visited the other hotel you can use with all inc - Riu Cancun, and their pool / beach area was not as nice. Our room was clean and large. Balcony fairly small, but we didn’t really use this – we had a side view of the sea and sunsets over the lagoon which was nice. We did some day trips whilst there to Tulum, Coba, Chitchen Itza and Isla Mujeres. We didn’t book these via the hotel reps as wanted to book with local tour companies, plus the prices are a lot more reasonable. We also went to Isla Mujeres by booking the ferry and booked a golf cart once we arrived – this was a fun day out! All in all, loved this hotel and will definitely be coming back!

We just got back from staying a week at the Riu Caribe.... Our home away from home. I'll start by saying you may find resorts with fancier amenities or fancier food but you'll never find a resort with better people that the Riu Caribe. Your satisfaction will depend upon what you're looking for. The Riu Caribe has SO many great employees. From Jeremias and Andrea at reception, Nataly, Tomasa, Beto, Olivia and Israel in the Lobby, Antonio, Elda and Celia in Albatros to Vicente in the Sports bar.... You will find no better people... The resort is very well managed by Nicholas. The resort now offers free wifi, which is very nice. No matter where you are in the resort, there's wifi access. Another change - reservations are no longer required for Maria Margarita's (Mexican Restaurant), Shangri-La (Asian Restaurant) or Gaviotas (Steakhouse). The grounds are kept impeccable with daily manicuring of trees, shrubs and raking of the beach. The beach is one of the best in Cancun. The hotel housekeeping staff is tremendous. Floors and tables are always clean and the rooms have a fresh smell. There are 2 pools - one for activities which stays very active during the day and a "quiet" pool which is great for relaxing and sunning. There is an outside bar near both. Gaviotas is located close to the active pool and the pizza bar is by the quiet pool. The elevators, which used to be an issue have been upgraded and now operate quickly with no problems. We never waited more than 2 minutes for one the entire week. Taxi's are available to take you to shopping, restaurants or clubs. There is a bus stop right across the boulevard so transportation is very convenient. Bus fare is 12 peso's (or one US dollar) to ride the bus. We always enjoy our stay and have some very dear friends here..... we appreciate the jobs all the employees do to make our stay enjoyable. Thank You, Riu Caribe!!!!

On arrival we were greeted with drinks and the room allocation was organised very well. The room was excellent very clean and the fridge was filled up all the time Plenty of water, beers, mixers we never ran out of anything. The maids cleaned daily and always left our room beautiful. All the staff could not do enough for us and the bars at night although busy the waiters were extremely well trained and very fast at serving. Always remembered our drinks too. Bus stop outside into Cancun cost 12 pesos per person and even stop at side of road to pick us up and ran every 5 mins never had to wait long. One thing to be aware of we went on the beach in Cancun and sat at a table and chairs to have a drink and they wanted to charge us 100 pesos for the table then wanted us to pay for the 4 chairs we were sat in and the umbrella that's before we paid for the drinks. Fortunately we were asking the cost of the drinks so we had not ordered. So be aware. We found out the Mexicans take this charge because they take there own food and drink. The food in the hotel was extremely good and offered a very good choice. If anyone could not find anything to there taste I would be very suprised. You just turn up at the Mexican, Steak and Chinese Restaurants so no booking was required..If you go to the Chinese ask for the Deep Fried Ice Cream its not promoted but they will make this for you it is delicious. All in all we had a fabulous time we saw the entertainment everynight which was very good. Yes I would return to this Hotel for sure.

Disappointed..

Stayed at RIU Caribe Nov 28-Dec 5. We love Riu chain and have been staying at Riu hotels on the West Coast every year, for the last 6 years. We didn't expect any surprises. However, our first hour, the check-in, room allocation, gave us a lot of stress. We booked an ocean view room online and asked for a higher floor. They don't read requests( we knew that) and gave us the 5th floor and we agreed. But when we checked into the room we found out there was no ocean view. There was a view of the city, highway and in the corner we could see a bit of ocean. Knowing the excellent customer service at Riu hotels I had no concern, left my husband in the room and went down to ask for ocean view room. I had a very difficult conversation with Sam. Right away he said that our room is an ocean view room and the hotel was fully booked and there was nothing he could do for us on that day, may be tomorrow. I tried and tried to explain the meaning of "oceanview room" but I was not heard, and there was no willingness to do anything for me. I have never been treated this way at any Riu before. We were extremely tired after 7hrs flight and I felt I was beating against the wall. But at that moment my husband came down with suitcases, saying the noise of the highway is bad and there is no ocean view and we will not stay in that room. And if they don't have a right room for us we'll stay in the lobby for the night. At that moment Sam found a junior suite room with ocean view on the 4th floor. We had to go to that extent to be heard. The room: clean but very outdated, some cracks on walls, the drawers not working well, the dresser looked like falling apart, everything in the room is white (felt like a hospital room) The rest is actually excellent. The food is very good, nothing to complain about and we are fussy about food. Meat, fish is good, lots of well prepared and tasty veggies, sides, Mexican, desserts, and very nice presentation. Thank you chef!! The beach is the best!! The service (except the front desk check in) is excellent. Thank you Ricardo in the buffet restaurant for your friendliness and professional service! Thank you Alberto in the lobby bar! You are the best bartender!! Would we return? Probably not, just because of our check in experience.
