My partner and I (48 & 50) have just returned from a 10 night stay between the 4th - 14th June 2017. This is a honest and accurate review of our stay and aims to give helpful tips and advice as opposed to just the run of the mill "This hotel was great" type of review. It details the good, the bad and the ugly, as well as some valuable travellers tips that we have obtained from our own experiences: THE GOOD: * Entertainment team work tirelessly all day and night to keep you entertained. Includes Pool parties, Beach party, BBQ around the pool, Soccer, Pool games, beach and pool volleyball, water polo, dance lessons, spanish lessons, evening cabarets and shows and much, much more. If you like to get involved and stay active then this is the place for you. Alternatively, if you just wanna' chill then they dont mither you once you say "No thankyou". * Lovely modern hotel which is kept spotlessly clean by the hard working staff * Amazing Sea views from all rooms (I believe??) See photos from our room on the 8th floor * Beautiful Gardens with plenty of tables and chairs so you can just sit and chill and watch the World go by if desired * Great range of food and drink available 24 hours per day (Includes Mexican, Japanese and Steak House themed restaurants which you NO LONGER HAVE TO BOOK FOR). Always something even if you are a fussy eater - You will not go hungry. * Fresh Pizzas available everyday from the pool bar - These are made fresh and to order. They are not very big but are very tasty (You can order as many as you want) * Rooms very modern, clean and airy with fantastic air conditioning and very well stocked mini-bar (all free) * Hair dryer (Very Good / Effective), Full size iron and ironing board provided in your room * Very well stocked fridge in your room which in our case was ice cold :-) * Coded safe in your room which is free to use (See important note in travellers tips section at the bottom) * Beautiful Pool area with lots of beds and Palm trees or parassols for shade * Great Waiter service around the pool and throughout the hotel (tipping is expected everywhere) * Fantastic clean white beach with clear, shallow turquoise seas * Bus stop right outside the hotel. These run literally every minute and it costs 11 pesos (50p) to go virtually anywhere! It's a 5 minute bus journey to downtown Cancun where all the shops, bars, restaurants and clubs are situated - 'Carlos & Charlies', 'Bar & Boutique', 'Senor Frogs' & 'Fat Tuesday' are all free entry bars and great fun for all ages including our bracket (40 - 55 year olds) * The vast majority of Hotel staff are very friendly, polite and helpfull. They get friendlier the more you tip them! :-) * You will not fail to make friends at this hotel - Travellers from all over the World who on the whole all seemed very friendly and always up for a chat whether around the pool or in one of the bars or restaurants * Ice making machine available on each floor at the end of the corridor THE BAD: * EVERYBODY, EVERYWHERE EXPECTS A TIP!! This can get quite frustrating after a while (even the transfer bus driver actually asked us for tips!) * Free wi-fi only available in reception area. Connection can be purchased in your room but this was quite expensive for the week (around £25) * No kettle in room * No robe or slippers provided which is the norm for a 5 star hotel * The standard Coffee from the machines is TERRIBLE... ask for Cappuchino at the bars as this is far better * Lobby / Reception area and main Restaurant are NOT air-conditioned due to their size. This can result in quite uncomfortable dining / drinking experiences * There are 2 banks of lifts servicing 9 floors (3 at each end of the hotel) - Throughout our stay almost half of these were continually out of order which could result in quite long and frustrating waits * Lifts not air conditioned - The heat in them could be stifling at times! * Sun bed reserving goes on and is not stopped by the hotel - The best beds are reserved from as early as 06.00am in the morning. I complained one morning after taking a photograph at 06.00 a.m where a full row right next to the pool (opposite the swim-up bar) were reserved - The hotel didn't do anything!!?? (See photo) * It was that hot that the Pool was quite warm and didn't really offer a refreshing respite when required; It was like getting in a tepid bath but we appreciate that this isn't really a complaint and know there is nothing that can be done - Just wanted to mention it for information really THE UGLY: * 50 / 500 Pesos SCAM - See description below in Travellers Tips section * Money stolen from our safe - See advice below in Travellers Tips section * Reps on transfer coach try to frighten you into buying mosquito repellent bands saying that they are a real problem in the country; We were no worse affected than when we got to the likes of Majorca or Greece, however we did see a couple of people who were covered in bites but not sure if they may have obtained these from going on trips?? TRAVELLERS TIPS: * SHOP AROUND FOR YOUR EXCHANGE RATE BEFORE YOU TRAVEL -Thomson gave us 19.6 pesos to the pound before we went. We found out Tescos offered 23 at the same time! (Massive difference!). Even the hotel itself was offering 21 to the pound! * 24hr food and drink only available from the Sports Bar and this included pastries, sandwiches and burgers / hot dogs so you will not go hungry. Some nights they had a Pannini press as well so you could toast the sandwichs but for some reason this was not always available?? * You can also use the facilities at the Riu Cancun Hotel which is only a 5 minute bus ride away. This includes the buffet restaurants but NOT the themed restaurants (Sea-Food, Italian & Japanese). This hotel has a fully air conditioned lobby, reception and main bar area which makes it far more pleasant to have evening drinks / chats with friends. In our opinion this hotel was also nicer with regards to layout, design and decor but the Carribe definitely has the better pool areas and beach for daytime activities. * There are so many fantastic things to do whilst in Mexico but the trips do work out quite expensive. We would have needed £2000 to do everything that we wanted! Trips include the following: - Coco Bongo (MUST DO!!!!) Approximately £125 per person for the VIP Gold package through the Thomson Rep, but this is still worth every single penny (See my review on trip advisor). Tickets can be obtained for around $80/90 direct from the club if required. The more expansive packages see you in the balcony areas as opposed to being directly on the main floor which looked quite packed and hectic! - Pirate Ship (Great Night on the Seas with food and drink included- See my review on trip advisor - The finale is absolutely amazing!!) - XCaret or one of the many other 'jungle adventure' equivalents - Catamaran Trip - Swim with Dolphins (Apparently can be done as part of the Isla de Mujeres trip) - Swim with Whale Sharks (Money back guarantee if you do not see any during the trip although this does not cover the swimming with them element as the conditions may may be deemed unsafe) - Swim with Turtles - Isla de Mujeres - Tulum - Chichinitza (one of the 7 wonders of the World) - Bar Crawl / Coco Bongo - BE AWARE; If you do this combined trip you will miss the first hour of the Coco Bongo show and we would NOT recommend this as the first hour of the show is AMAZING!!! :-) * Take a travel kettle and your own coffee - A must if you love your coffee in a morning or late at night! * We had around £50 go missing from the safe but could not prove it and the reps said only the 3 managers could gain access - ON ALL FUTURE HOLIDAYS WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A PETTY CASH BOX TO KEEP OUR VALUABLES IN WITHIN THE SAFE. This wouldn't stop the box being pinched but at least they wouldn't be able to just take a small portion of your money hoping that you wouldn't notice. Already bought a box from Argos for our September holiday; Only £11.99 so well worth the peace of mind * No need to take Beach towels with you - thse can be obtained every day from the hut around the pool and are of a very good quality. You will be given towel cards upon arrival which you exchange for towels whenever you want (daily if required) * Tipping is expected throughout Mexico and definitely results in better service - The smallest note denomination is 20 pesos, which depending on the exchange rate is around 80p - We found this to be ideal for regular tipping * Be careful of the 50 / 500 pesos scam - If you buy something over 50 pesos and hand over a 500 pesos note (£20 - 25), Some dodgy people will apply slight of hand and say you have only given them a 50! They keep the 500 note, give you there 50 back and then you hand over more money thinking it was your mistake as you are not familiar with the currency - VISIBLY CHECK THE NOTE BEFORE HANDING OVER AND SAY "HERE'S A 500 NOTE" so you are certain yourself * Buy your Mosquitto repellent bands before you go away - You can get 2 from B&M Stores for only 99p and these last around 5 days. The tour operator tries to sell them to you on the transfer bus for £5 each!!! * An exit tax of approximately £50 per person (1120 pesos) is required when leaving Mexico - This MUST be paid in cash (Sterling, Pesos or Dollars) - Cards are NOT accepted for this transaction * If you take Dollars with you, all your change will be issued in pesos * The weather in June is quite changeable as it is classed as the rainy season - During the 10 days we had one fantastic thunder storm which lasted about an hour with torrential rain, one half day (morning) of rain, it was always very hot and humid irrespective of whether it was sunny or cloudy (32-33 degrees in the day and around 27/28 degrees at night) and most days were split around 50 / 50 of sun and cloud (but it stays hot even when cloudy!) * There is not much directly around the hotel but there is a small shop / pharmacy right next door. The beer in the hotel is quite gassy but ice cold bottles of Corona can be purcheased from the shop for approximately 80p per bottle! Happy Days ;-) You will undoubtedly have a fantastic holiday if you go here, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be only too happy to answer to the best of our knowledge / ability Jon & Debbie x

What I like the most is their private beach . Great service . Limited options for a la carte restaurants ( just 3 ) . My son loved the kids club and he participated on their nightly activities at the stage in the lobby. Clean room and grounds . Overall is a great value for the money .

Dream Come True Holiday! Fabulous!

My fiance and I got engaged here two weeks ago! We had a 5 night stay and it was the most wonderful holiday! The check in was quick and easy and they brought us cold drinks. He proposed to me that night on the beach and the next day they decorated our room and brought us a complimentary bottle of champagne! Outstanding employees! The beach and pool were very clean and the water very clear. We were always able to find chairs. They have entertainment all day from volleyball and soccer to water dancing and fun games! They work so hard all day. You will see the same people who entertain outside during the day also performing on stage in the theatre at night... we asked if they get a break and were told only about 3 hours between poolside entertainment and nighttime theatre entertainment!! They are AMAZING and are always full of energy! I recommend going to the shows! We saw a rock concert, 80's theme night, Michael Jackson, and our last night there was a beach party outside! We loved the food..there is always SO much to choose from. There is something for everyone. We tried all of the restaurants and buffets and we were always satisfied. You MUST try the pizza place by the pool!! We had it every day for lunch and it was delicious! They make it fresh for you and it only takes 10-15 minutes. While you wait, grab a drink right next door. The swim up bar was spectacular. We never had a problem getting drinks and the drinks were amazing. Our personal favorites were the Mango Tango, Melonball, Tequila Sunrise, and Mojito. They come around the beach and pool and take your drink orders as well! We always tipped at least a dollar every 2-3 drinks, but you don't have to. I highly recommend tipping because they work so hard and treat you like royalty! They really appreciate it as well! Our room was clean and well stocked! Our first night the hairdryer would not shut off, but we went down to front desk and told them and they fixed it right away! We did not have wifi in our room, which is totally fine for us because you don't spend much time up there! The free wifi in the lobby worked great for us and it also worked out by the pool area and some beach area. After dinner they had a show in the theatre and after that most people seemed to go to bed, which we liked because we weren't looking for a party resort. For the time period we went it was very relaxed, we were expecting more drunk obnoxious people but that wasn't the case! After the show we would go to the bar in the lobby and get drinks and talk to the bartenders. Two of the bartenders who really stood out to us and who we loved were Maya and Gener! They were so excited about our engagement and took an interest in getting to know us. They were so fun and kept serving us different shots to try! (get the scooby doo shot!) They also have pink champagne (my fav) and every time I would step up to the bar they would immediately get me some! We had a lot of fun getting to know them! They work hard and have the best attitudes so we did tip them, but again, you don't have to and you would still be treated just the same! Weather: Don't be scared if it says rain all week!! Our forecast said 80% chance of rain and storms everyday, but it doesn't mean it'll rain all day. Even though it did rain every day for us, it would only rain about 1-2 hours around 3pm. And when I say rain I mean pour! We stayed on the beach under umbrellas and watched it pour instead of run inside, as did several others. Our mornings were always sunny. We got way more sun than we thought we would! We went through Apple Vacations so they helped us with excursions. Several people told us to do the "booze cruise" so we did, but we would not do it again. We got sea sick so bring Dramamine. I was worried about getting sick from the water but we didn't! They have purified water so no worries. I did use a water bottle to brush my teeth just in case. Everything about this place is wonderful and I cannot wait to go back! A 5 night stay is not nearly enough in paradise! Will definitely be back next year!
