November 2018 Stay
GEORGE R.
Nov 26 2018
Frontier Airlines cancelled our flight out of St. Louis on 11/15/18. Very disappointing especially since other flights at 6:30am were not cancelled. Apple will not pay us for the missed night at the Hotel we were charged. We have the travel insurance so we must fight to get refund through them. Flight never should have been cancelled. I have 2 complaints about the resort. With the exception of the breakfast buffet and the Pizza shack by pool, the food was terrible. You lose all sun at this property by 4pm due to the position and height of building. Everyone has to keep moving their chairs to try to stay in sun. We will not return to this hotel for these 2 reasons. Hotel was very clean and our room 405 view was great.

Exceeded our Expectations!!!

The Riu Palace Peninsula was wonderful! We were especially impressed with how often the hotel was cleaned. Every time someone left a bathroom stall, staff would immediately go in and clean. The hotel floors were constantly being mopped. We had 4 bottles of liquor in our room plus a stacked refrigerator with water, soda and beer. When you'd run out of something, the hotel staff would immediately hand you another. Never at a loss for bottles of water or Pina Coladas :-) The Entertainment team was fantastic! There was something for everyone! Danny, the fitness instructor, was top notch!! Excellent classes!! There were plenty of seats around the pool. Not as many on the beach since the beach is pretty rocky but all the fun was at the pool so it was perfect. Would highly recommend the Riu Palace Peninsula!!

Birthday Celebration

Last minute booking to celebrate mine and my brothers birthday. I must say the staff went above and beyond to make my birthday memorable! The hotel is very dated and needs to be upgraded. However the rooms were very clean and housekeeping was very attentive. The food was very good and the hotel staff could not have been more warm and welcoming! The hotel is very easy to navigate. And the beach is well maintained.

A couple of things you should know
MERIDELL C.

The lobby is very underwhelming. I walked in and thought "I don't know.." but the pool areas and beach were gorgeous. Food was great...tons of variety. Our room was clean. We laughed at the unfortunate placement of a frosted "window" in the wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. It was right in front of the toilet. One thing people definitely need to know is that only 2 people can use wifi to a room or you need to pay for it. This is NOT advertised by either the hotel or APPLE. Overall: nice place!

Not a 5 Star resort

The resort says 5 stars , in my opinion is more of a 3.5. It is nice and all, just not a 5 star. The rooms are okay, bed is very very hard. The resort is very clean, and has a beautiful beach.

This was our fourth visit to Cancun and the second time we stayed at the Riu Caribe. We had a wonderful time and would gladly stay here again in the future. Easy access to the beach, friendly and attentive employees, Delicious restaurants and beautiful view of the ocean from our room. We have never been disappointed with any of the RIU Hotels.

Beautiful resorting excursionand housekeeping issues

We Were very disappointed with our deep sea fishing. We had to travel an hour away. The water was so choppy that we had to come back in early. Because we came in early we had to pay for our taxi back to our hotel, this was supposed to be included with the price. We were talking to another couple and their tour guide recommended changing their fishing trip to a different day because the water was going to be so rough. Plus their trip was only 5 min away compared to our hour long trip. We wasted 2 hours of precious vacation for time for no reason. Our room was not cleaned on a daily basis and our refrigerator was not stocked unless we called (repeatedly). The resort is beautiful but the room house keeping was lacking.

Was told this was a great honeymoon destination sadly anything but. It was more like costa Del sol on a bad day. Noisy at all hours of the day and night. People throwing up in corridors. The lobby walkways were more like a shopping centre precinct so busy. Foam pool parties and noisy entertainment so great for kids. Steakhouse was appalling chewy overcooked steaks. Breakfast was abysmal either overcooked empty or dry. Lunch was better but the evening food was again awful. The Asian and the Mexican restaurants were however good. Balcony was so small. Bedroom had No plugs near a mirror to do your hair. Very noisy with air con outlets at the back and noisy kids at all hours by the pool and we were on the 7th floor! Asked reception just to replenish tonic in the fridge several times it was forgotten. The pool waiter staff and housekeeping were however fabulous. The pools and the green grounds area were nice. If you’re looking for that magaluf noisy drunken holiday then this is your place. Sadly not mine!

Visited in late November and the resort was just okay. This was my first time staying at a RIU as I usually frequent Secrets, Now, Dreams, etc. Location: About 20 minutes from Cancun International Airport and about 15 minutes from the little downtown area. Check-in Process: Meh. At the Secrets, Now, Dreams, etc that I usually stay at, your greeted with a drink, warm towel and are seated at a desk to process your check-in with a front desk agent. At this RIU location, we waited in a very busy line (around 1:00 pm) and the agent that assisted us spoke English, but not well enough for her to assist with our questions. Thankfully our room was ready prior to the regular check-in time so we were able to get in and get situated. Rooms: Very underwhelming. I booked 2 dbl bed ocean view room. I understand not much time is spent in the room, however, these rooms have got to be the most dated rooms in all of the resorts I've stayed at in Mexico. I would not recommend this resort to friends or family based on the rooms alone. Also, the toilet kept running, however, it wasn't worth the trouble to switch rooms seeing as we only spent time in the room to sleep. Outlets were located poorly. Towel Key & Wristband: Again, with all other resorts I've visited in Mexico, none required I wear a wristband at all times and that a towel key must be used at the pool. Super inconvenient. I had a suntan line from the wristband and I had to keep tracking of a TOWEL key to get a beach towel everyday. Your visitors are spending $$ to stay at your facility. We should be entrusted to use your towels and return them accordingly without the babysitting of a towel key. Breakdown on Pools: There are two main pools, one pool has water activities and music throughout the day, the other is much quieter. Towel access (with your towel key) opens at 9 so if you want a good spot, bring something of minimal value to save a chair by the pool prior to 9 am. Guests were saving chairs with books around 7:30 am - 8:00 am. Rightfully so, the sun hits specific areas of the main pool in specific spots since it's surrounded by palm trees. Beach: The beach was AMAZING! The sand was white and the water was water and bright blue. No shells/rocks or seaweed! One of the best parts of this hotel was the beach access. The hotel also has many beach lounge chairs on the beach for you to use. Food: Subpar. It's edible, we ate, we survived. But, would not return. Entertainment: Subpar compared to other resorts. Gift Shop: I recommend walking outside the main entrance to the hotel, there is a little convenient store under the hotel that has much more to chose from. Comparble to a 7-11 with better souvenirs! (Walk outside the main entrance and walk down the ramp to your left). You will see it! This little store also gives you change back in USD (which the hotel does not). Overall stay was OK. It was budget friendly, and worked with the price range and short 3 night stay we were looking for during the expensive holiday season. Most likely would not return......

I stay in quite a lot of Rui hotels, most of the time they are Rui palace hotels, but as this was the first time staying in Cancun and didn’t want to be right in the centre So I decided on the caribe as told lots of good things about the hotel. The check in was very different than I’m used to, all the people getting off the coach were seated together wgiven a drink and told about the hotel then given room key. The problem with this was not all people able to understand what was being said. We found are way to are room which was very clean but basic. Good view from balcony but very small and claustrophobic. Drinks in your fridge, topped up daily, and optics for spirits. The only problem I had in the room was the bathroom, it had a large glass panel in the wall between it and the bedroom so if you were using the toilet you could see the person sat on the toilet, and if you used it during the night and turned the light on it lit up the bedroom. The hotel grounds were immaculate, as well as the pool area. The main pool is split by bridges the large area where all the games took place at set times, a children’s area with connecting pool for adults and a chill out part where you could hear what was going on put didn’t feel you had to take part perfect. A Large swim up pool but due to the shade was quite cold. The beach is fantastic no rocks just pure sand, lots of sun beds as by the pool and waiter service, what more can you ask for. The entertainment team are great, everything they did was very good from the night time shows to the games around the pool, and fun events around the pool. They even do a stretching class in the sea, it almost made me want to join in but decided the most I wanted to stretch was for a beer. All the food was good, the down side in the main restaurant was it didn’t get topped up quick enough and the service was very slow, from asking you if you wanted a drink to clearing your plates from table. The drinks were nice but again very slow service and pre mixed cocktail mix to add to drinks so always strong at the bottom as never stirred and unable to do it your self as no straws. All in all the atmosphere was great for all ages created by the entertainment team day and night that had time for everyone anytime. The bar staff did not interact with anybody just served, all apart from the staff working in 24hour sports bar they were great. I’ve been to Mexico four times and each time I’ve gone all at Rui hotels I’ve been made to feel welcome by bar staff and waiters, from topping up your drink while eating, to bar staff recommending different shots to try. This didn’t happen on this occasion, I’ve always taken money as I tip here and there to bar staff and waiters but the only tips given out were to sports bar staff and room cleaner as all were FAB. I would go back again but hope I don’t have to lower my expectations because it’s not a palace.

not much changed...except food has gone downhill

rooms are adequate, but just since I was here last May, food quality has gone downhill, for example, the grill just off of the pool, steaks used to be nice and trim, very little fat...now...half meat...half fat....I do not enjoy having to spend 5 minutes hacking off all the excess fat...that should be cut away before before being served!....the beach and pool entertainment staff is as always energetic, it just seems as mentioned before....this Riu seems old and tired, I really wonder if they might be better served if they tore this one down and started over from the ground up....seeing as their are many NEW resorts opening over the next few years....you have to renew...refresh...or die!!
