terrible front desk, great entertaining staff
MARK B.
Nov 15 2018
Room had leaking walls with musty odor, light fixture in overhead ceiling bathroom leaked from the middle of the light. walls leaked from top of doors. Inquired about this after first night stay and was told they would check into it. Went to the desk again and was told they would check into it. After next morning, I called and demanded to be moved as I felt danger from the leaking light fixture. I was moved later after 3 pm and was informed they would fix the room. However, I checked the next day and another couple were staying in the room that was leaking. I couldn't believe it. I was not compensated for my stay at all and was told by Daniel at the front desk to drink tequila. REALLY!!!! On the flip side of the stay, the entertainment was great, I had a great time with all of the staff and barstaff. John, the apple representative gave false information about an excursion purchased by six of us. The catamaran was to only hold 35 people and it took on 45, snorkeling was only for 15 minutes and was told and hour at each stop, paddleboarding was only for 15 minutes. We were told that we could rent a six passenger gold cart and could only get a four passenger gold cart. Not a very good excursion over all. Told shrimp cerviche and was given some kind of fish. Overall the beach was very nice and the waitstaff were great.

My only recommendations are the following: the workout facilities were less than adequate Room was too small and equipment was outdated. Highly recommend investing in this area. The 2nd area is regarding loud guests from 1-5 am every night.

RIU Cancun was the perfect resort for our group of 17 that included several 18 year olds. The nightly entertainment and daily activities were awesome. There was always something going on. The service was exceptional. The food was good. The view is spectacular. I would recommend they put more pillows in the rooms. The location is ideal. It's only 20 minutes from the airport and walking distance to shopping and night clubs.

This is a awesome hotel. The service was the best I have ever had. This was the best vacation me and the wife have ever had. The only problem we had was my sandals were stolen on the beach the first day, but everything else was so good it didn't matter.

Our agent Michelle Duquaine was top notch in our booking. Rooms are average and clean. Hotel is very clean. Food is good and a variety. Beach very nice (not large), perfect for relaxation. The only down side is the sun is gone by 5:30-6pm last week in february and first week in march. To the right of the beach is a ferry to the island. Great boat ride. Feel safe walking our of the hotel in the hotel district. Would go back in a heart beat. Apple people were readily available if we wanted to book a excursion. We are strictly there for RR!

I stayed at Riu Cancun Feb '18, I was very happy with the Hotel Staff, they really go beyond expectations to make you feel comfortable and enjoy your vacation. The hotel is clean, the food is fresh and with variety every day. The beach is truly turquoise water in this area and the swimming pools have a great environment with music and pool bar, I also felt safe at all times. I would definitely book this same place in the near future and would recommend.

Pros: 1. Apple vacation representative on-site all day. 2. Beach was well-maintained and clean. 3. Room was old but clean. 4. Entertainers were doing their best. 5. Convenient location of hotel. Cons: 1. Pool was cold and hot-tub was not even warm enough! 2. Only 4 small (8 person max) elevators for such a huge hotel, long waits times. 3.So many food options but quality was average. 4. Service at restaurants needed attention. 5. Very few pool-side seats get good sunshine due to main building covering the sun. 6. Inside the restaurant there was always a burnt oil smell, not good enough ventilation. 7. Hotel has very old design and spa is located very far to main spots.

Me and my partner stayed here for 2 weeks, this hotel is perfect if you was a luxurious holiday but yet have a lively atmosphere too. The food is brill. Our favourite was the gourmet restaurant. This was our first holiday together and it was perfect ! The rooms are gorgeous and lovely views off the balcony(picture 3). The staff can’t do enough for you. Cocktails were lovely. Would definitely stay here again.

Average overall stay, nice staff and it stops right there. This property needs serious attention, upgraded and fixtures. Our toilet was not working well, called three times and still was not working normal when we left.

What a FANTASTIC honeymoon we have just had.. 😃❤️🇲🇽 After reading a couple of slightly negative reviews regarding our chosen hotel , we had some slight trepidation upon our arrival however, we couldn’t have been more wrong!! Upon arriving we were very impressed. Check in ( and out ) went seamlessly and the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is modern, comfortable, stunning and totally spotless. The housekeeping team work tirelessly to keep it this way. ( There were cleaners on site 24 hrs ) they deserve a massive pat on the back as this is a very large complex and it must be tough for them with the amount of foot fall in and around the hotel. Our room was simply furnished but clean and tidy and perfectly comfortable. We were on the 4th floor with balcony and views over the quiet pool and beach ( see attached pics ) And had our own mini bar and fridge which was kept well stocked for the duration of our 14 night stay. We also had complimentary Champagne and chocolate strawberries upon arrival and rose petals and heart balloons in our room. The only criticism I would have is that the shower temperature fluctuated a lot.. for those going with children, I wouldn’t recommend leaving them to shower alone. We were not disturbed by other guests although in some areas of the hotel this may be different due to the layout of the hotels entertainment zone and certain accommodation areas . Rooms by main pool area would be affected by noise at times. With regard to the food, drink and restaurants... this all totally deserves a 100% mark! The choices and amount on offer blew our mind and was absolutely delicious every single day. Food and drink is available 24hrs and restaurants and buffet areas are again well presented and spotless. Ice and all drinks in hotel are safe to drink as all made with filtered water. DO NOT drink any tap water and check when out and about regarding ice etc. All the trips we took, water was either provided in bottles or was confirmed safe to consume. The alcoholic selection was vast & included international choices.. still all inclusive but , you have to state you want Smirnoff or Bacardi etc otherwise they serve you local ones. On that note, the optics in the room were all local and if I’m honest all tasted like tequila?! 🤣. Once again, the staff in hospitality work so, so hard and always with a smile, warm handshake or hug ( by the end of the holiday ! ) well done all of you! We were there over Xmas and new year. We had gala dinners both Xmas eve & NYE and Exceptional is the only way I can describe it. Don’t be afraid to watch the shows... the entertainment is top notch!! From costumes to choreography.. totally bang on! You can watch the team practicing all day and when you see the finished product, you know why. 10/10 guys n girls!!! Ok, now for Activites and things to do... There is so much on offer, you couldn’t get bored if you wanted to.. My husband and I decided on ; Chitzen Itza collection( fabulous but a long day) Coco Bongo ( an absolute must! Blew us away! ) Xhi - Ha ( Marine and jungle park, snorkelling and chilling day -,just beautiful ) La Isla Mujeres. ( Small island just off coast with golf buggies however, you MUST take a driving licence tho or can’t hire one and nice beaches and GREAT restaurants- cheap also! ) and Dolphin Gimme all.. ( Just Wow!! bucket list moment and all Marine animals well cared for and appear happy! ) we traveled and booked all our excursions with Tui. We may have paid a couple of $ more but all trips were well organised and safe. You can do them other ways but do your research first!! ( we heard a couple of horror stories tbh ) Most places deal with pesos or US $, Pesos was better value for money at time of our trip tho. Locally there are restaurants, bars, shopping ( tourist and high end ) a supermarket and laundrette. The buses are easy to use and safe although they drive a bit crazy! 🤣and various water based activities. It is safe in tourist zones. You get the usual “ come in to my shop! “ etc... you will also ( sadly ) get ppl approaching and asking if you would like illegal substances on the streets. You get used to it by the first few days tho. Just say no firmly and they leave you alone. Our rep was very knowledgable and was able to offer most things asked for. We tipped regularly, we gave our chambermaid 100 pesos every couple of days ( about £4 ) and the same with bar staff and waiters/ess. As said, in our eyes the staff totally deserved every penny. Wages are low and a couple of quid makes all the difference! They also go a little bit further for you on the back of it.. So all in all, we absolutely and totally ❤️ Mexico and are already planning to go back. Well done Riu Cancun.. you put in a very impressive show all in all. See you next year! 😃🇲🇽

Sun, Beautiful Ocean, Beech, All-Inclusive, for the Holidays and Christmas Joy

Are you looking to get away during the winter holiday period of time to celebrate with a loved one, family, or friends? My wife and I, late 20’s female and late 30’s male, travelled December 24th through December 31st, of this year; we celebrated Christmas in Cancun and stayed in the resort. The Riu Cancun is right next to the Adults only Riu. Remember, this is the tail end of the rainy season, just the start of the heavy winter travel season and holiday time, the sun is out but can be spotty, and the water can be a little rough, but that is the Gulf of Mexico in general. —- The Basics: Arrival- Upon arrival to the resort, especially at night, you are greeted by the sheer awe of the size. The initial outside grounds are well kept and looks nice. You are instantly greeted by friendly staff members upon entry; for drinkers when you are escorted to checkin they are waiting with a drink. The Welcome/Reception area is modern looking and very well kept; the reception area was always spotless, as was the rest of the resort. - Check-in- Checking in was very easy. The reception area was well staffed and the staff were very friendly + helpful. Checking in was a breeze. At Check-in, you will be advised to meet someone with a travel agency and or tour agency, the following morning to review your pre-booked return transportation to the airport, your pre-booked excursion(s), and or to get you to take an excursion. This is VERY helpful and you should listen! Do not forget to go in the morning (I know it sounds crazy but set an alarm and go early on your first day; you’ll beat the line and be in and out). We booked round-trip transportation and wanted to purchase excursions. Super helpful to book our return airport transportation when booking the resort, even more helpful was setting up our return airport transportation early as advised; we also purchased excursions. The process was super efficient and easy, took 20 min at max if you know where you want to go on a excursion(s), and really was easy. (if you booked your travel from someone like Expedia, it is much cheaper to book your excursions early as you pay a premium on-site .... go with a reputable travel/tour agency online or located in the resort for safe, clean, friendly, tours and excursions.......Also, if it is only a few bucks more and or you can afford it, book individual transportation to and from the airport vs. shared, as it will save you time upon arrival, while also allowing you some more time to relax/sleep before pick-up to travel back to the airport). WiFi- You get your free access password upon checkin. This was supper helpful and worked EVERYWHERE in the resort to include rooms, pool, and beach. This was AMAZING if you like to stay connected for work, to the news and or social media. Rooms- We stayed in a room that had a balcony and an ocean view. The pictures on this site speak for themselves. If you are expecting the rooms to wow you, please don’t. They are very well kept, clean, the fridge was ALWAYS stocked with bottled water, soda and diet soda, and beer. There are also bottles of liquor (Rum, Tequila, Vodka) that are filled every few days in the room which was pretty cool even though we do not drink. Bathrooms were a bit dark but clean, functioning, the water pressure is strong (NYC style strong) and water temp was hot (actually burning if you so choose). Double sinks were nice and the bathroom was spacious. The towels were always stocked and clean. Balcony view of the ocean, beach, and pool was amazing from the 11th floor; higher up would have been that much better. There were lots of outlets for our plugs to charge iPad, Overall, the rooms fall on the pretty plain side (basic) but what do you expect for a beachfront all-inclusive in Mexico. The room is enough for what anyone needs in my opinion and if you keep your expectations realistic, you will be okay. If you intend to spend your time in a room on vacation, an ocean view room with a balcony is a great choice. The Ocean Balcony view is incredible during the day, at night and even when if it is raining out; supper relaxing and peaceful. The sound of the ocean is absolutely relaxing during the day to relax from the sun and at night to unwind; the temperature was amazing so we could sleep with the screened, balcony door, open at night to hear the waves at night while falling asleep. Pool(s)- There were multiple pools. For transparency, we are not pool people while on beach resort vacations so we did not partake but they looked very clean and fun. The pools were active and ALL beach chairs around the pools and pool decks were taken! There was a party pool and quieter pools. I would have liked both if I was in more of a light pool party vibe. As a former heavy drinker the pool bar would have been fun a few years ago. Pool Bars- The pools are staffed and the energy is great. The music was also pretty good; relevant and not lame. Towel Service - Super easy, quick and clean; the physical towels were your basic large beach towels. Beach- The beach is pretty cool during this time. Remember you may have some light clouds and or showers due to it being the end of the rainy season, we did, but it was VERY minimal. The sun was out for us most days of our travel; the minimal clouds helped my wife not to burn too much and she soaks in sun (you %100 still need sunblock ALWAYS in Mexico). The beach gets the sun the longest all day; especially by the volleyball net. Parking by the volleyball net is great if you want sun from 8am till about 4/4:30pm. The beach chairs are great. Get out early to reserve good chairs. The beach isn’t huge but does it’s job, the send is well kept and very clean. Service on the beach is AMAZING. Staff are very fast, friendly, responsive and come with your drinks super fast. Just ask and they will bring you what you want or need. There is beach volleyball and soccer. Take time to walk past the resort both ways. The long route brings your part the Adults only Riu, allows you to take a nice peaceful walk past other resorts along the beach. Very safe and peaceful during the evening. Ocean - The ocean is very beautiful but be carful as the waves and current can be different if you are not a strong swimmer; as an above average, strong, swimmer who grew up on the water, I’d strongly suggest going in the water with children at all times and or enforcing a strict rule for any child to remain knee deep under constant supervision. For you adults, just be mindful as a strong swimmer and even more mindful as not so strong swimmer. The Gulf in Cancun, anywhere, on the beaches is not a joke. Water temp at this time was pretty good. Food- as a disclaimer, we did not try any of the specific restaurants (3) as we are a bit lazy on vacation and we do dine out in NYC often but they looked okay. The food in the general area was good. We enjoyed the Mexican food which was authentic. There were all sorts of types of food from around the world and tons of deserts; pretty much all types of food you can think of and even a bit on the posh side. One can certainly choose to overeat if that is what you choose to do. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner had verity and were all good. The variety from sushi to to filet Mignon was good. Inside seating feels a bit like a very large cafeteria but this is your normal beachside large all-inclusive; seating was abundant, clean, and that staff were great. Outdoor covered seating is less abundant but awesome day or night. This is where we sat for all of our meals. May be easier for smaller groups. Bars- bars looked fun and had energy; music and laughter were great. I used to be a VERY heavy drinker and loved to party.... I would have had ton of fun at the bar. I went to the bar for drink, The virgin drinks were very good. Sports bar has tons of new TVs and games. Gym- The gym was clean, had new equipment and was cool. A little small if a lot of people decided to workout at once but never had an issue. Spa- don’t partake.... looked small and just okay. Outside seating and lunge areas - very nice views, clean, peaceful abundant. Inside seating area- same Kids activities & care - looked like they had both which was cool to know for the future. Family Friendly (large or small)- 100% Kid Friendly - 100% Couple Friendly - 100% Romantic - in my opinion it is not very romantic, but It is what you make of it; I’m not very romantic at all. Proximity to downtown and shops - shops right outside the resort, and downtown is a safe and easy short walk (8-10min), day or night, for all ages. Amazing location. Proximity to Airport - 20 min or So. Amazing Checkout- checkout was very easy. Took us 2 min. If you want to relax and enjoy a beach vacation in a large, no major thrill, all inclusive, beach resort, I would recommend the Riu Cancun. It checked off all of our boxes, although subjective, I error on saying our friend say we have realistic, but high standards for vacations and especially beach vacations. I’m not sure I was classify this as 5 star but I’ve accidentally stayed in far worse. Alone and together, we have stayed in quiet a few all-inclusive resorts, this was a good one. Be realistic in your expectations, given the location (Cancun, Mexico) the size, and the volume of people that come in and out; you will be happy in your choice of this place.

Just a further update we did complain and your staff were so unhelpful and basically wasn't one bit interested. Forgot to mention our room was like a box room with abs no sea view, a block wall in front of us.. I did go to the desk and make a complaint but they were not 1 bit interested, even though I did mention it was our honeymoon...why should we pay extra to upgrade... so finally we will not be returning...
