The food sucked.there was no coffee pot or iron in the room.we didn't get new wash cloths every day. They let family members use the facilities that I paid for. Don't go there.

The service was excellent. The room was great except that either we had no air comditioning or very poor. We were on the third floor and the sun was brutal. The food was a little repetitive but never went hungry. The pool had a fire in the pump house so the pool wasn't up to par. The beach was great! The bars were great and the bartenders were very helpful. Would recommend to family and friends.

I was under the impression that I was going to have some privacy because I was traveling with my three small children I paid extra for the family room and what the family room include was a extra twin size bed. So we had to queen size beds together and one twin size bed. We don't even sleep with our children in our own house nonetheless on vacastion. I was totally dissapointed with the room. The response from the hotel management was that this was their biggest room. Another problem was trying to get in the swimming pool, they dont have easy access to getting in and out of the pool with small children. My wife almost broke her leg coming out of the pool with our baby since the stairs were very slippery she slipped her foot and ended up with a big bruise on her leg. I will not recommend people with small children to visit this hotel.

This resort deserves a 2 apple rating,at best. The Food is BEYOND HORRENDOUS. Its the SAME THING every night. Mealtimes were dreaded. It was enough to keep us alive and that is it!!! The "King Size" bed was 2 double pushed together,so you either have to squeeze onto one or somebody sleeps in the crack. Yes, you can visit the pools & restaurants at the other RIUs next door...but a pool is a pool...and is the exact same food!! Why would you go to a different restaurant for the SAME FOOD? Waaaay too many trees. I came there to vacation in the sun, not lay in a forest. The beach is very very narrow and covered with trees. Most of the staff barely spoke english. There is NO plan for rain! The entertainment staff has nothing going on...it rained for 3 days straight and they didnt even have any indoor entertainment at all. And the booze was watered down...though i fixed that by ordering everything with mucho rum. Ive been to a lot of all-inclusives, most with ratings similar to this one...but this was by far the worst. I would NEVER RETURN!

Good value for price(23 year old party girl review)
Jan 15 2012
I returned from my vacation to Riu Bachata less then a week ago. There was a group of four of us between the ages of 18-23. Overall for what we paid this all-inclusive was a good value. I have been to many high end all-inclusives with my family and in comparison to previous resorts I've stayed in Riu bachata was very average, not so great and not so bad. It was a great vacation for four girls our age as there happens to be allot of young people which made it allot of fun. The swim up bar is the place to be during the day, some of the days there I felt like we were at a Vegas pool party.

The hotel itself needed a lot of work. Super outdated. They are actually in the process of changing owners. The entertainment was okay but i’ve had better in Cuba at same star resorts. The rooms were really nice and clean. The beach though very rocky and not clean so you need water shoes. The food was okay. Kind of repetitive and not very fresh. Probably best bet to do alacarts. Also don’t go with sunwing travels we had to wait over one hour for our luggage when we got back to Canada. No international drinks or espresso coffee like in Cuba. Also drinks were only offered at 10am in Cuba they were offered 24 hours a day. Overall I was super impressed and I probably won’t be going again. But it was a good experience! Don’t follow my review seriously just go with your best bet. Enjoy!

Hey readers, this is a review of my/our stay at riu merengue Puerto Plata from April 3-17. Firstly, please note that there is a change of ownership currently going on from Rui to Senator. Prior to going to the resort, the reviews were scary and we felt that we had wasted monies. Let me tell you, it was all lies. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in riu merengue and would go there again. ROOMS: upon our arrival, we were put into 2 different rooms, even though we were with 2 young children. We went to the lobby to see if this can be changed to occupy us in the same room. The lobby guys couldn’t do it, as they didn’t know who would bear the brunt for the change (Riu or Senator) After speaking to the TUI rep (Jose Antonio), our room got changed the second day to a Junior suite, sea view with a separate room and a bedroom. Room was cleaned on time everyday. Nothing was stolen. We didn’t pay for safe. The safe is old school, with a key and not digital but very solid. We had loss of hot water for 3days but this was fixed as quickly as they could. RESTAURANT: we didn’t use the main lobby restaurant (La Roca). This restaurant was really busy and staff were working at neck breaking speed. However, the only restaurant we used was the Almendros. Located in the Riu village (Mambo) area.It was clean, food was always available. Staff smiled and welcomed us everyday. By us, I mean everybody! If you do visit, use this restaurant. Tipping would be appreciated but not hassled from you. WIFI: I could never connect to the WiFi in the main lobby where everybody congregated. Reception there is really bad. No WiFi is available in the room or to buy. However, if you use the lobby after the almendros restaurant, (riu merengue village) the WiFi is spot on. On 97% of the time, but not everybody knows about this. But now you know! It may cut out occasionally but you life won’t stop when it does. It resumes back quickly. THE BEACH: the beach is beautiful. It is different from Punta cana’s. Please note that there are pebbles in the beach and rocks in some parts. The rock parts are toward the shops. You will need to explore the whole shore line to find your perfect spot. I bought water shoes (because of review). They were useless as I never used them. Some pebbles are small and some are medium. As advised, you would be able to find your own sweet spot. One good thing to note is that you do get fish as well. Bring some bread into the water and you will be amazed at the feeding frenzy. Don’t worry, they have no taste for flesh, just pastries lol. EXCURSION: I would recommend the paradise island (normal, not the overpriced VIP). You get to see the mountainous side of Puerto Plata. Once on the island, you will see very exotic and beautiful fishes. You get to feed them and they come in all shapes, colours and sizes. Caution: don’t hold food in hand to feed, they may chew your fingers..lol Ocean world is another I would recommend. You get to see all kinds of fish, sea lions, sharks, dolphins, stingrays, birds. The dolphin shows are brilliant. Those creatures are very intelligent. You will see for yourself when you get there. I bought the day pass and still got to interact with the dolphins properly. Some people buy dolphins encounters, which I think was pointless as you get to interact with them more during the day. In summary, bad reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. If you take them to heart, you will never go anywhere. Try learning few words of Spanish and they will love you more. Don’t take your arrogant attitude and expect smiles. Remember these guys work here and they are always polite and willing to do anything to make you happy. That being said, don’t take advantage. Tip these guys, if you can. Smile and enjoy your Caribbean experience! Engage in some sort of exercise, as my two weeks proved that middle age does go to your middle...lol. As advised, the hotel is undergoing a change of ownership. Ownership date is around April 29 2018. There could be worried faces when you do visit. In all, enjoy, be safe and get your tan on. Hasta luego mi familia!

Cool resort, very friendly staff. You get what you pay for. Grounds are kept clean. Would recommend to someone on a budget, worth it. Don’t believe all the comments. The resort is changing owners and will close at the end of the morning month. Would go back to the resort

Top Notch Staff !!

Beautiful resort! 10 for cleanliness. Food was excellent and a wide variety. Beach was not maintained, debris and garbage in areas. Water was rough (red flag daily). Rocky base in areas, wear water shoes to be safe. Spent our time at the pools. The area is picturesque. Mountains surrounding, beautiful walkway and lookouts. The staff was more than accommodating! Very welcoming. Felt like we were a return guest when really this was our first visit. Would follow the staff to their new location at Mangos when they move. (Shout out to Salami and Mosquito, you guys rock!! - resort names lol), Would strongly recommend Hosai the tour guide that works with the taxi business. He showed us all over the area and went where we wanted for less than an organized tour company. Overall a ten for exception of the beach wash up.
