Changing Rooms
ROBERT R.

When we arrived at the hotel, there were four of us -- two couples. One of us was told we had an upgraded room at no cost; the other couple was told they had an upgraded room for the first night but then would have to move the next day. When we told the hotel staff that moving and ultimately not being near each other was unacceptable. After much discussion, we were told that we would need to talk to the reservations manager the next day. The next day, we were told that we both could move to be near each other. While we really did not want to move, the reservations manager made the process very simple by showing us choices in the rooms. We ended up still with upgraded rooms, close to the pool and close to our friends. All in all, it worked out -- and we received free massages, champagne, flowers, and tshirts for the inconvenience. The hotel was very nice and the staff seemed attentive. It was nice to stay at a smaller hotel that, even though it was full, never seemed to be packed at the beach, the pool, the bar or the restaurant. The Terrace Restaurant was great, and the other restaurant where you had to make reservations was even better. I would definitely go back to this hotel again.

We stayed in a Beachfront Room as we had before and everything was very good. The staff here are second to none and the general ambience and service cannot be beaten. The food is excellent and since we were last there they have added a third restaurant on the beach, and also have more service and less buffet's in the main Restaurant. We had a small problem in the bathroom and the maintenance man was there in 20 minutes. Used the boats a couple of days, great. Cannot say enough good things about it.

Exactly the R&R we needed

My husband and I were on the hunt for a completely relaxing holiday and this definitely fit the bill. Lovely small hotel, very attentive and high quality service. Good quality drinks and wine. Don’t miss daily champagne hour - 7-8pm! Great chance to meet other guests and enjoy a different daily champagne. Restaurants were really good, Malabar (on the beach) was our favourite. Trysting place was too old school for us for a Caribbean vacation. Hotel was majority Britts - was a nice change for us! We walked to the grocery store to bring home some rum, it was literally 2 minutes outside the gate. There are no 120V plugs in the rooms.

We stayed in the lower level room of the garden view, which was ideal for us and we spent little time in the room. It had everything you need and was kept clean, and with a wonderful turndown service. The food was of an excellent standard, we loved the fact that unlike most all inclusive we only had a buffet meal twice during our ten night stay in October. The Friday BBQ was great and we were lucky to be able to have a table on the beach. Our favourite place to eat was the Malabar restaurant for both lunch and dinner. We also ate at the Trysting place which made a nice change. We enjoyed starting our evening at the Champagne bar, chatting with other guests. The standard of the all inclusive wine was very good, as was the local Piton beer. The highlight of the holiday for us was the activities on offer. My wife took advantage of the yoga, pilates, body stretch, dance lessons and tai chi. Pauline was an amazing instructor with lots of knowledge and tailored the classes according to the individuals in each class. We both took part in the aqua fitness and table tennis and I very much enjoyed playing tennis with the coach. We enjoyed a walk to the local market, and another to the lighthouse with Tania, who is real asset to the hotel. We spent most of our mornings by the garden pool and the lazy river, where the drinks service was superb. After lunch we spent our afternoons on the beach, where again the drinks service was very good. We spent a day at the body holiday, sister hotel, which we also enjoyed and then went on a sunset cruise, which was lots of fun. We had a couples massage on our last afternoon which worked well with checking out of room at 12pm. The massage was of a high standard and about the same price as in the UK. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting either a relaxing, romantic holiday or a fun filled activity holiday.

A great stay with the edge taken off by some bizarre handling of spa charges

The staff and the food are, for the most part, truly outstanding at this hotel. The setting is lovely with a very good beach. An airport runway is right next door but flights are infrequent and only ever prop planes on the smaller side – it simply isn't an issue. Aspects of the hotel show signs of some ageing but all in all it was a fantastic experience. The hotel is not huge (which is good) but the three restaurants each have a distinct character. The quality of food and alcohol served is very good too and the staff are generous with everything. The sports and activities on offer are also of a very high quality. The tennis coaching with Mario was superb – I learned a great deal. Up to the very last day my only reservation about this hotel was that nearly all the guests, like me, were British. I have nothing against my fellow Brits but I prefer more of a mix when I’m away – but that’s not the hotel’s fault! It was frustrating, then, to run into a bizarre and completely avoidable issue on check out – one which was not handled well at all. We went to the reception to pay the extras bill, mostly this related to upgrades to more expensive wines with various meals. Everything was recorded accurately except for a couples massage we had at the spa. On our arrival at the hotel there was a spa promo leaflet in our room. It offered a couples massages for a stated price and mentioned that there was a 15% discount if we booked within 48 hours of arrival. The following day we were on the beach when someone from the spa approached us to let us know about their treatments. They mentioned the 15% discount and confirmed that this applied to all treatments booked within the first 48 hours, whether they were taken within the first 48 hours or not. The told us to book at the spa, which I did. At the check out we pointed out that not only was the 15% discount not applied, but that the treatment was pricier than advertised. They checked the spa leaflet (same as the one we had in our room) and could see we were correct. However they had to speak to the spa as they did not have authority to reverse spa charges without the spa’s consent. As they could not get through to the spa we had to go back to see them about this later – this was fine as we had time, otherwise it could have been an issue. Having spoken with the spa they ‘explained’ that the cost of the couples massage in the spa price list was more than that in the leaflet in the room – more for the same treatment?! There was nothing in the in-room leaflet to indicate these were special prices or that the leaflet should be shown to get these prices. It was claimed I’d agreed to the price on booking at the spa, but I just asked for the couples massage, I didn't even discuss price. Beyond that, various reasons were then given why they did not want to honour the 15% discount, including that we hadn't actually had the treatment within the first 48 hours, even though we had checked the terms on that very specifically. Cutting a rather long and dull story short it took three visits to reception over a period of a few hours for them to concede we should be given the promised 15% discount. They refused to honour the price we saw in the leaflet despite having the same price in the spa leaflet they had in the reception area. A very negative atmosphere was created around the whole issue, like we were being unreasonable just for asking them to honour what they had promised. But then things got more concerning... When they finally agreed to honour the 15% discount we then asked to pay off the amended bill. We were then told they had already charged the original bill to the credit card we lodged with them on check in – despite the fact we had at no point approved that bill and had questioned the spa charge as soon as we were presented with it. There is no way a hotel should be charging people’s credit cards without their knowledge or approval. The presentation of the bill for checking was, it seems, a bit of a charade. They arranged to credit the 15% for the spa treatment back to our credit card but only after a real struggle and without honouring the only price we had seen for the treatment. There would seem to be no good reason to have one spa price list in the room and another in the spa itself. So by all means go the the Rendezvous, but we careful you are clear on any ongoing charges as you incur them. In my opinion this confusion would be easily avoidable by having a clear and consistent pricing policy – I’d rather not feel like I had to be hawk-eyed about such issues on a relaxing holiday. A note about St Lucia generally. We climbed Gros Piton – a great experience. The advice is to go early though (makes sense in the heat) so we left the hotel at 7am skipping breakfast and taking food with us. The road between the resort and Gros Piton is different from the one between the resort and the main airport, different and much windier. By the time we got to the base of the peak we were both quite green from the drive (and I have not felt car sick since I was a kid). As a result we skipped breakfast and got straight on with the climb. This was a mistake – you’ll need the energy. Fortunately we had bananas with us to keep us going but you’d be better off eating well before the climb. Otherwise this is a great thing to do.

We returned to the Rendevous after 3 years and it was a lovely experience again. We had an upgrade to a beach front cottage which is what we had first time round. The food was fab and the drinks were premium brands which is a bonus. Staff were amazing, helpful and friendly. We were visited every day by a lovely little ginger tabby who had impeccable manners! Being a cat person it was home from home. We will return.
