If I ever return to Aruba, I will rent a house.

January 25th-February 4th, 2017 If you have allergies and/or asthma avoid this hotel. This was my 3rd trip to Aruba. I went there with my mother 35 years ago (when I was 16), 8 years ago with my husband a our two girls (who were 18 and 20), and most recently, during the above dates with my husband. In my mind, Aruba has always been my happy place. I close my eyes and imagine laying on the beach in 82 degree weather, with the warm sun shining on my body while the trade winds are blowing across me, making it the perfect temperature. I have to say, the weather has never disappointed me. I stayed on Palm Beach during my first two trips taking an occasional day trip into Oranjestad to walk around. 35 years ago, the town consisted of mainly quaint pop up vendors selling souvenirs. 8 years ago, some stores and restaurants as well as local vendors. This trip we stayed in town and due to an expansive restoration and renovation project, little quaintness exists. High end stores and malls have made the town just like any other over-priced tourist trap you've ever been to. I have been fortunate to travel quite a bit in my life. Not because we are rich but because my husband travels a lot for business. We mostly travel with airline and hotel rewards that he accrues. It is my reward for being alone a lot. We decided fairly last minute to take this trip. Marriott has not been my husband's preferred hotel but for some reason he has decided to switch loyalty this year. Since, he only recently switched we paid cash for our room. I wasn't worried about staying in town because I am just as happy by the pool as on the beach and Marriott has a good reputation. We stayed in the Marina tower, marketed as adults only, which had a nice pool, and there were additional pools and a beach across the street, at the ocean suites. The hotel also boasts having it's own island. It trip was quite a disappointment for me. I am allergic to feather bedding and cigarette and cigar smoke. The room was remodeled as non-smoking but I could still smell stale cigarettes and the carpet was coffee stained. The room was small, lacked a microwave (so no re-heating those over priced leftovers), and had a small balcony where you could just stand, which was promoted as island view, which meant we overlooked a loud street, a parking lot, and the back of a bar including it's garbage cans. The windows and doors to the balcony were improperly sealed so the trade winds produced a never ending whistle. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the featherless, comforter and pillows provided were so shabby that they belonged in the trash. Smoking was allowed in any open areas including the pools, the open air lobby, bar and restaurant. Smoke was everywhere, especially cigar smoke. So we tried the family friendly area across the street (which included a swim up bar??) Both pools and the beach had the same smoking issues. Plus, the small beach was dirty, had ants and no servers to be seen. So we took the boat trip to the private island, where the smoking prevailed. It also smelled like a septic tank being pumped. I don't know if we were just unlucky and the bathrooms were being pumped but after waiting for the smell to clear, we took the boat back to our hotel. Other restaurants had both open-air and indoor dining options. I was told indoor would mean no smoking. But to take advantage of the wonderful trade winds, many restaurants opened the doors and windows so the smoke drifted in. For the thousands of dollars we spent, it was the worst vacation I have ever had! I didn't have the heart to let my husband know the extent of my misery. I don't remember any of these issues on my prior visits. Needless to say, I will try to steer my husband away from the Marriott Brand. I will also spend more time investigating smoking policies. In the future, I will probably look to rent homes for vacation. It would have been a lot cheaper and I could have eliminated smoke issues. I would have given the hotel a terrible rating but I know the hotel does not control smoking laws, but outdoor non-smoking sections should be provided, especially in kid friendly areas.

Really needs two reviews - facilities awesome, food/service appalling

We stayed (for the 2nd time) in the Ocean Suites part of this hotel (the Marina part is 100+ yards/metres away). Room 2218 - probably the worst room in the hotel. There are ocean view rooms, pool view rooms and carpark view rooms. Ours (booked through JetBlue vacations) was carpark view and low down - worst possible combo. The food is appalling. Yesterday I had the worst hamburger ever (and I have lived in Europe most of my life). Unseasoned, unspiced, grey, defrosted almost-meat. But all the hotel food is dreadful (There are restaurants in the Marina building - maybe they are better.) Maid service is random and unreliable. BUT - private island is amazing, really amazing. Hotel pool area is pretty good also - although the management should deal with the idiots who come down at 7am and put towels on loungers. Just throw them off when you arrive and dare them to call the manager to complain. great for families, great for couples - just look at Trip Advisor reviews and eat elsewhere. Oh and really great internet in the rooms and around the pool - v. good. And the rooms are very comfortable, but with the stupidest electrical arrangements you will EVER encounter outside the third world.

Great hotel with awesome private island

We stayed in the ocean suites. The rooms were spacious, clean and the beds comfortable. The hotel has 2 buildings, one where the suites are and another where the regular rooms are. They have golf carts transporting people from one building to another. They are across the street from each other. The ocean suites area has a private little beach that is perfect for kids or simply relaxing. There are pools and tiki bars with music. The sunsets are breathtaking to see from a hammock or simply a chair. They have boats that take the guests to the hotel's private island (Flamingo Island) every 5-10 min. At the island, there's a family beach and an adults only beach. We stayed at the adults only area and it was really nice and quiet. There's also a nature trail that ends at a really nice little beach, make sure to wear shoes if taking the trail. There's also a spa, restaurants and you can rent a cabana.

A very FRIENDLY Island

This is our tenth visit to Aruba. We've always stayed at the Renaissance - 8 years at the Marina Hotel and the past 2 have been at the Ocean Suites. Both are great. We eat breakfast at the Aquarius nearly every morning - outstanding buffet!!! (In the evening it's wonderful as well!) The staff is always genuinely welcoming. Javier, Juanita, Daisee, Anushka, Betty, Dorothy, Lena, Dora, and Yalitza all truly go the extra mile to make your experience the best. They are truly amazing! Be sure to check it out!
