The Old Order Changes

The new owners of this classic Honolulu hotel seem to be planning the removal much of of what makes it a unique Hawaian classic. Their outline portrays an extensively modernized building. It perhaps another symptom that “Uncle Bob” (Yadam) has just retired. His impeccable services in handling the baggage has been a feature of the hotel for years. In fact since the hotel opened in 1969. Always a friendly face and a welcome for returning clients. It not that everyone else at the entry was not also welcoming but that “Uncle Bob” had his own style. Not to sound too much like an obituary it is fair to say he will be missed by many. The hotel itself is currently under intense remodeling so the services affected are constantly shifting.

Won me over right away.

Sad for some of the other reviews. This place is working very hard and it shows. We had a great room, great customer, and great location. What more could you ask for in an incredibly busy location. We highly recommend the hotel. Wait what's that view from our room, Diamond Head

A Shocker

When booked no mention of renovation going on at hotel, no pool or restaurant facilities. Rooms old and smelly, holes in carpets, bathroom awful. Not really anything good to say with exception of pleasant and helpful staff and ok location

Great location. Not much else.

We stayed here for 6 nights. Started off really bad when reception had us waiting behind a couple for about 10 minutes without once acknowledging that we were standing there with our suitcases waiting. So rude. There was another staff member checking in or sorting out something on another computer and they didn't acknowledge our existence either. There was a huge school group blocking all the foyer and it was just chaos. They finally opened a third computer for check in and by that point the damage was done. I wished we had booked somewhere else. The room was a king ocean view with a small patio and views out over Diamond Head and views over part of the beach. Unfortunately the room itself is pretty old, wallpaper seems to be covering all surfaces in the bathroom and bedroom and it's ugly and dirty. The whole room was tired and old. Could do with new carpet. Around the windows (which have no privacy so workman on the penthouse floor needed to be blocked out with curtains whenever we were changing) was swollen with old water damage and there's no tint on the windows so like I said, no privacy. There is no restaurant which is no big deal because there are so many places to eat nearby. There is no bar but ABC on the corner has wine and there is a fridge in the room for you to keep drinks chilled. There is no pool. They will give you beach towels downstairs though. The location is the best. Down the quiet end of Waikiki and close to the Zoo. I actually really liked how convenient it was to everything. Actually, the housekeeping staff were very friendly and our room was always clean after they visited. It's a real shame that renovations are probably increasing the amount of very average reviews that the Queen Kapiolani are getting. I am sure the renovations will be a huge improvement but the rooms unfortunately will still be below average. I think the whole hotel needs a re-furbishment not just the common areas!! Upon checkout front desk staff couldn't be bothered thanking us for our stay or anything which didn't make them redeem themselves with me. I know it's the holidays, I know your going through renovations but seriously it doesn't take alot to smile and say thank-you.

Ok
