Too expensive for the value

This is a beautiful hotel with a lot to offer, but they have limited options for eating so be prepared to go shopping or eat out. What restaurants they do have are expensive, and the service is really slow. Having stayed at a lot of Hilton’s, I expected a higher quality of food and was very disappointed with the lack of options. There is a store close to the hotel but the refrigerators at the hotel are small so you have to keep going to the store.

Wonderful vacation spot

I visited the hotel in 2014 with my teenage son to give us some healing time together after a terrible divorce from an abusive ex-husband. It was beautiful and healing. There is no need to leave the hotel if you don't want to. There is a beautiful lagoon open to the sea. The tropical fish come into the lagoon and you can snorkel and see them. The sea turtles also come into the lagoon and there are dozens who like to hang out under the waterfalls. There is also swimming with the dolphins in the lagoon and a few sharks (no - you can't go swimming with them, and they are in a separate tank). The sunsets are amazing. There are many pools to choose from. There are plenty of restaurants. There is a lazy river, and you can take a water taxi to your room. At night, there are a million stars. Altogether, a wonderful place. I am going back with my new, sweet and kind husband later this year.

Unconscienable behavior promoted by Hilton

I normally enjoy Hilton. After my Wife found out she had Alzheimer's, she wanted to return to Hawaii. I booked a first class trip that included a one bedroom suite at this hotel. Upon arrival, in the evening, the clerk tried to upsell me to another suite. When we woke the next morning it was to heavy construction in and around our building. Hilton had failed to provide notice on thier website or upon check in of the construction. We also learned that their occupancy was very low and, instead of moving us to another unit before check in, their focus was to cut the hours and services of restaurants, bars and their shuttle. I paid for full service. As I later attempted to explain to Hilton, by way of a personal letter, the upsell by their employee was a breach of corporate ethics as is their failure to notify potential guests about the construction and lack of services. Further, this is a destination resort so more thought needs to be made by management about the treatment of their guests. I wrote the President of Hilton with a copy to the General Manager of the hotel. Apparently the CEO doesn't read letters and the corporation had to send the letter to Texas. I finally heard from a customer service agent three weeks later doing the apology dance and sending me a free night to any Hilton. I would have preferred that they tell me they will conduct an ethics training on the property, even if it was a lie. I never heard from the hotel General Manager. They are too busy building timeshare units. Many people go to destination resorts for special events from weddings to end of life trips. The primary focus must remain on the guest, not the return on investment. Don't go to this hotel.

Great value especially for families with a variety of ages and desires

This is a great hotel for families with children. There are a large variety of activities to satisfy all ages and wishes. Loved the lagoon with sea animals and the beautiful vistas from all around. Would like to see additional food options, especially some casual ones. Italian restaurant was great. Add an area like the adult pool tables where kids can play, but overall we'll be back and enjoyed our visit a ton!

The most inconvenient and overpriced hotel ever

I hope my review will help others staying at this hotel with an infant. They advertise this hotel as family friendly but I have to say based on our experience I don’t think it is best to stay here if you have small children. Aside from that, the most disturbing thing that happened the first night we were there. We needed a hot water kettle to boil water for our son’s bottle and when one was delivered it was filthy inside. We requested a second one, and it was taking so long and my son was jetlagged. We all went to sleep, and we put the “do not disturb” sign on the outside of our door. Somebody from housekeeping entered our room, turned on all the lights, woke up me and my husband and my son, and made us feel like they were not respectful of our privacy. You were utterly confused and mad about this. Who enters somebody’s hotel room in the middle of the night when they have the do not disturb sign on the door and turns on all the lights? Next, if you can avoid staying in the Palace Tower whether you have children or not I would do it at all costs. This is the only tower that doesn’t have any restaurants or facilities so you must take a 5 to 10 minute walk anywhere if you want food or a pools etc. Furthermore, the rooms are extremely old and just little things like an old-school coffee maker, powdered creamer etc just make the whole experience feel very dated. Also, only one of the elevators works in this tower and there are several rooms and several floors so waiting for the elevator takes a very long time. Now let’s talk about inconvenience for people who have strollers and small children at this hotel. The hotel is extremely large to the point that they provide a very slow tram. And if you’ve ever had small children you know that sometimes they cannot wait. Some of the bathrooms are not equipped with infant changing areas. There are several bridges that you would need to take to get to the pools or restaurants. And if you don’t have somebody there to help you lift your stroller over the bridge you can take a severely inconvenient wheelchair/stroller path that sometimes involves walking through a quarter-mile of hotel rooms just to get to the other side. Again, when you have a screaming baby who needs to get back to their room in order to be nursed or changed or put to sleep this can take quite a long time and be extremely inconvenient. There ARE elevators but get ready to walk 10 minutes out of your way to find it. Also, when we called to request a pack n play for our baby they said they couldn’t guarantee we would get one. I’ve never heard that from any hotel ever in my life. Luckily, we got one, but heads up you might not be so lucky. Let’s talk about the pool. IT IS FREEZING. Not refreshing at all, uncomfortably cold. And several guess were complaining about it, too. I don’t understand why the Hilton would not heat the pools to at least a somewhat comfortable temperature. Isn’t the point of coming to Hawaii to be able to swim in some water? Instead, tons of people are not swimming. And my poor 10 month old was shivering after a quick dip. Also if you have a car in self parking get ready to make a 10 minute walk to your car which again if you have an infant is extremely inconvenient when sometimes you just need to pop them in the car and get him to go to sleep. Getting out of the hotel room is challenging enough with small children and then having to leave 20 minutes earlier than you planned because your car is so far away is just really annoying. Also, the prices for food at this hotel are OUTRAGEOUS. $11 lattes, $7.50 for a MUFFIN. But what choice do you have?? The breakfast buffet is $40 a person and it’s not even that great of a buffet. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m fully aware that resorts uncharge but this was ridiculous in my opinion. And I think people should know you will probably spend $300/day minimum on food alone for two people. Now let me say that if you can stay in the Makai tower it is absolutely gorgeous, updated, has a Keurig, liquid coffee creamer, is close by to facilities, and has better views. Let me also say that in general the staff is extremely friendly and helpful especially the bell hops and front desk staff. But if I had to give advice to somebody staying on the big island with a small child I would say pay the extra money and stay at the Marriott next-door because the hotel is smaller, more convenient, cleaner, right next to a grocery store and has a beach and a heated pool. I don’t think I would ever stay at this Hilton again solely based on the size, inconvenience, and extremely overpriced food and drinks.
